      Book Description

Play It Again, Sam is a timely investigation of a topic that until now has received almost no critical attention in film and cultural studies: the cinematic remake. As cinema enters its second century, more remakes are appearing than ever before, and these writers consider the full range: Hollywood films that have been recycled by Hollywood, such as The Jazz Singer, Cape Fear, and Robin Hood; foreign films including Breathless; and Three Men and a Baby, which Hollywood has reworked for American audiences; and foreign films based on American works, among them Yugoslav director Emir Kusturica's Time of the Gypsies, which is a "makeover" of Coppola's Godfather films. As these essays demonstrate, films are remade by other films (Alfred Hitchcock went so far as to remake his own The Man Who Knew Too Much) and by other media as well.
The editors and contributors draw upon narrative, film, and cultural theories, and consider gender, genre, and psychological issues, presenting the "remake" as a special artistic form of repetition with a difference and as a commercial product aimed at profits in the marketplace. The remake flourishes at the crossroads of the old and the new, the known and the unknown. Play It Again, Sam takes the reader on an eye-opening tour of this hitherto unexplored territory.

4 out of 5 stars Nuggets Amidst the Jargon.......2002-04-18

The nineteen essays collected here (along with introduction and afterword) grapple with various aspects of cinematic "remakes", and while most have something to offer the general reader, many get bogged down in attempting to find a definition or critical space for remakes. In other words, to get to the good stuff, you're going to have to wade through a lot of critical jargon from psychoanalytic film theory and cultural studiesýwords such as "intertextuality," "oedipal" and "postmodernity" pop up a lot. That caveat aside, there are plenty of nuggets to reward the patient reader.

Albert Kolker's "Recalculating the Hitchcock Formula" is an intriguing analysis of Martin Scorcese's Cape Fear, in which it is proposed that Scorcese remade Cape Fear by simultaneously remaking Hitchcock's Stage Fright, I Confess, and Stranger on a Train. Dan Georgakas's essay on Robin Hood effectively shows how the 1938 and 1991 versions each embodied the cultural and political trends of their time. Michael Brashinsky's considers Bergman's Virgin Spring and Wes Craven's The Last House of the Left in an examination of how a to remake a European "art" film into a low-budget slasher picture. In "The Superhero With A Thousand Faces," Luca Somigli provides a cogent analyses of the relationship of superhero film franchises such as Batman and Superman to their comic-book sources. His elegant conclusion is that such projects are based on the accumulated myth of the characters and setting, rather than being remakes. My favorite essay is Elisabeth Weis's exploration on how the film M*A*S*H was adapted for television and managed to continually reinvent itself while maintaining audience loyalty. Other essays have their moments, but the ones above will be the most accessible and interesting to the general reader.

      3 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2001-07-04

I found the book to be entertaining and I liked the way the first half of the book dealt with their lives in one incarnation and the second half the book dealt with another incarnation. The dog, Sam, seemed to be a cute character and very likeable. However, I didn't think the heroine and hero were developed as well as Victoria Alexander has done in her other works. My rating is based on reading most of her other books and comparing it with them. This one had some light humor, but not nearly as witty as the others.

3 out of 5 stars neither good nor bad.......1999-10-26

I liked the general idea of star crossed lovers being reborn with both of them having feelings of deja vu and with a funny dog set on bringing the two of them together. However, I found the book somehow lacking depth: The love between the hero and the heroine does not really develop, but is there instantaneously. There are no real character traits recognizable when all the people are reborn: the regency heroine is a docile daughter who wants to do a daring thing just once while the present day heroine seems to try everything wild, the villain looses his conscience when being reborn etc. All in all the book is nice enough to read, but I did not get engrossed in it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best, most original romances I've read.......1998-08-26

Alexander consistently writes romances that defy the traditional romance storyline and conflict pattern. This novel provides a refreshing, original look at soul mates and is fun to read. She has quickly become my favorite writer. Whenever I see her name on the book I know it will be entertaining, heartwarming, a great read.

5 out of 5 stars put your lips together and whistle for this one.......1998-02-16

Being new to Victoria Alexander's work, I found this book to be heartwarming and funny. I especially liked the characters of Sam the dog, and the secondary character of Pippa/Morgan's cousin, Carolyn/Lindy. This is one to while away a rainy afternoon with!

5 out of 5 stars CHECK OUT THIS WOODY! .......2007-08-03

If you are not sure if you will like a "Woody Allen" movie, I suggest you start with this one. It is one of his more straight forward films and it is funny! I am a fan,but I must admit that I like his earlier films (Play it again Sam,Banana's,Take the Money and Run,Sleeper,Manhattan,Annie Hall). There are some really funny scenes in this one. The scene where he is introduced to a blind date at his apartment is hilarious! The DVD transfer looks good, but the treatment could be better.

5 out of 5 stars A Cowardly Nebbish Would Never Fall For His Best Friend's Wife. Or Woody?.......2007-07-30

Woody Allen plays film magazine writer Allan Felix, a man who, since his wife left him, has been an amalgam of devastation and cowardice. Allan is a disheveled mess. An uber-schlemiel.

Helping him get back into the dating world is his apparition of Humphrey Bogart (Jerry Lacy). He's Allan's hidden, tough-guy interior longing to come out, but Allan's too scared to let him take the leap. Allan's no Bogart, but will he be by the end of the movie?

Besides Bob Hope, who Woody admittedly lifted his "faux nervous guy" from, PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM marks one of the first appearances of Hero Neuroticus. There doesn't seem to be a wasted sweat bead, grunt, or record toss (more on this later). It's also the first pairing of Woody and the magnificent Diane Keaton.

SAM is also a great movie to watch if you've never seen a Woody Allen movie, or if you have and aren't impressed. This is because it was made before Woody wanted to make serious movies. This was one of his "early funny ones." It's a nice mixture of smart jokes and sight gags, one such being when he is at a loss for words after his date asked him about his ex-wife. He is holding a record, and when he casually tosses his arms up to nervously shrug off the question, the record goes sailing out of its jacket and crashes off screen. Perhaps one of the funniest sight gags I've ever seen. I've heard secondhand that Woody didn't tell the crew he was going to do that, so when they broke up laughing, they ruined the shot.

PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM, adapted by Woody Allen from his Broadway play, was directed by Herbert Ross and photographed by Owen Roizman, both of whom have laundry lists of commercial successes. It's an adeptly structured romantic comedy, for love eventually does find Allan Felix in the end. And like Bogey, he handles it with class. Here's looking at you, Woody.

4 out of 5 stars PLAY IT AGAIN, INDEED! .......2007-07-29

Here is another early Woody Allen social commentary heavily dependent on his long time love affair with film noir and its characters, in this case the legendary tough guy/yromantic figure Humphrey Bogart. Now this may be a film that seems dated compared to today's new sensibilities around the `woman' question. It is not clear that it would be politically correct to ask advice of the legendary Bogart on the woman question today. Bogie, except in the case of Lauren Bacall, was rough on his lady friends (or for the politically incorrect `dames'). But not to worry Woody is the same old bungling ball of nerves and anxieties as he is in most of his films. The real surprise here is that such a cerebral actor/ comedian/ director uses so many sight gags in his repertoire. Does the woman question get resolved here for poor Woody? Well watch the film and find out. You will be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny.......2007-07-02

Play It Again, Sam, written by and starring Woody Allen is just plain hilarious. Full of sight gags and tremendous one-liners, this is Woody at his "slapstick" funniest. Diane Keaton is great as Woody's friend and advisor. They have an excellent chemistry. The movie takes place in San Francisco, and is full of excellent imagery. Fun and fast-paced, this is a 4 star Woody Allen film well-worth the minor time investment (85 minutes).

        5 out of 5 stars Top 5 Woody Allen.......2007-04-16

It has almost been forgotten that this film was not directed by Woody Allen - but this makes no difference it is still one of his greatest films.
We start the film with Allan Felix (Allen) watching Casablanca in the Cinema and feebly impersonating Bogart as he leaves the Cinema. The film proceeds with an imaginary Bogart advising Allan on how to deal with Women. Allan as you would expect is pretty hopeless!
This film is consistently funny with the blind date scene being one of the greatest comedy scenes ever filmed.
The script (based on Woody Allens own stage play) is full of great dialog, as you would expect.
Diane Keaton is wonderful in her role, and Tony Roberts is very funny in his supporting role as the business man who leaves a telephone number so he can be contacted everywhere he goes.
"I'll be at 362-9296 for a while; then I'll be at 648-0024 for about fifteen minutes; then I'll be at 752-0420; and then I'll be home, at 621-4598"
Remember this film was made more than a decade before mobile phones even existed in brick form.
The film finishes with a great recreation of the end of Casablanca.
If you don't like Woody Allen then you probably won't like this. However, if you have any appreciation of Woody and haven't seen this, you should buy this DVD now.

4 out of 5 stars Doing His Homework.......2005-01-12

Stan Friedland is a retired high school principal who had a highly successful and satisfying 34-year career in education with a doctoral degree from Columbia University. In 1998 he published, along with Phil Craft, "An Orphan Has Many Parents."
Since Stan, throughout his lifetime was interested and active in athletics and sports, it was not surprising that his next literary work would be a biography of a famous sports figure of the mid-20's through the mid-50's; i.e. Sam Schoenfeld--teacher, basketball player, coach, radio and TV commentator! What is interesting is how this new work came into being. Certainly, it was serendipitous to say the least.
Dr. Robert Schoenfel, Stan's personal physician of the past 15 years, following a physical exam in early 2003, asked Sam about the book he had co-authored. He learned that the orphanage was in the East NY/Brownsville section of Brooklyn; that Stan had attended Thomas Jefferson HS where Schoenfeld (Bob's father) had been the Phys.Ed. Director; that Friedland had him as a teacher; and when he majored in PE at Brooklyn College he came back to Jefferson to student teach, Sam Schoenfeld was one of his mentor-teachers!
When Friedland opined that it was unlikely Dr. Schoenfeld could be successful in his campaign to have his dad enshrined in the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame (alongside the likes of Nat Holman and other "Jewish Sports Greats")merely on the basis of his coaching career, Dr.Schoenfeld enlightened him of the wide spread of his dad's accomplishments--as teacher, basketball player, coach, collegiate basketball official, sports
commentator, etc. He revealed that he had over 700 news clippings about the career of Sam Schoenfeld and offered to lend them for Stan to peruse. When Friedland brought them back a week later, he observed that only a book could fulfill "the full magnitude of your dad's accomplishments." It was then that the book was born!
But Stan Friedland did not rely soley on 700 news clippings. In his Acknowledgements he writes; "A good biography requires ample documentation, authenticity and accuracy, plus a plentiful number of eye-witness sources to provide the human and colorful elements of a particular individual."
Friedland interviewed each of Sam Schoenfeld's three sons, Bob, Ed and Peter and "each is well represented in the book..." Sam's "kid-brother, Jack,83 years young, was a tremendous
historical resource" and "delighted to be part of this project that honored a brother." And other members of the family were like-wise contacted, had their recollections recorded and duly acknowledged.
"Then there was the vast contingent of alumni from Jefferson." The author either spoke to each of them in person or over the phone, but in any event "were they ever so impressive!"
So, there is no question that Stan Friedland did his homework and fulfilled his own description of what constitutes "A good biography." The work is decidely that--a good biography of a notable sports figure who died at too young an age ("not even 50 years old" as son Robert laments in his Foreword in the form of a "letter to his Dad" in which he further laments "I never knew about most of your achievments. You were always a modest man."
And while the focus is always on Sam Schoenfeld and his climb from obscurity to acclaim, Stan Friedland takes the time to describe Schoenfeld's milieu and the social forces at work at the time. My favorite is Chapter 7:"Basketball; The Jewish Sport--a Cultural Phenomenon." Perhaps because I personally was witness to much of what he was describing about the 20' to the 40's. I grew up during the fame of Nat Holman and the CCNY "Cinderella Teams."
If there is any criticism that might be levied at the work, it could be that, in his eagerness for "accuracy and veracity" Stan Friedland presents his readers with a surfeit of quotations from the news clippings attesting to the achievements and accomplishments of Sam Schoenfeld. And even though each such presentation is for a new set of achievements and accomplishments on the part of Mr. Schoenfeld, it creates for the reader a sense of redundancy. Still, one may well ask: "is the redundandcy in Sam Schoenfeld's accomplishments--or the reporting of them?"

                    Book Description

This is the first collection of essays in English to give prominence to the work of European film scholars whose aim is "to understand how film is understood." The Film Spectator raises fundamental issues that have confronted film theory for the past thirty years, but which have never been adequately answered. It gathers together a representative sample of this work, covering the period from the mid-seventies to the present.

                      Book Description

Media and Cultural Studies: KeyWorks is a comprehensive anthology of the most significant theoretical readings on critical approaches to media culture and communications. The volume brings together what are considered the KeyWorks of current theory and method for the study of the abundance and diversity of culture and society in the present age.

Spanning the gamut from the writings of Antonio Gramsci and the Frankfurt School to recent essays on identity, race, gender, and the postmodern turn, this book offers a range of core texts that have never before been collected into a single volume. The editors' introduction provides an in-depth analytical overview of critical media studies, and each section is fully contextualized.

Media and Cultural Studies: KeyWorks is an indispensable scholarly and pedagogical tool, which fills a longstanding gap in the literature of this area. It will be essential reading for scholars and students in cultural studies, media studies, sociology, and related disciplines.

                        Book Description

Put your mathematical thinking cap on--because even though these puzzles are toughies, they take insight and brainwork to solve, not a knowledge of calculus or linear algebra or any other kind of advanced math. Consider for a moment:
                        * How can you divide a regular pentagon into five identical pentagonal shapes?
                        * What is the only decade in American history to contain four prime-numbered years?
                        * What three right triangles with integer sides have areas numerically equal to twice their perimeters?
Don't worry if the answers don't spring to mind immediately; you'll have plenty of company. Compute without calculators; study the "survival of the splittest" by arithmetically analyzing a little amoeba reproduction; and investigate whether or not a rich man's children are getting a "square deal" with their inheritance. Just don't give up, because you'll have a lot of satisfaction when you figure them out.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Puzzle Book (I hope this isn't out-of-print).......2003-07-22

As an avid collector of puzzle books, I can honestly say that *Hard-to-Solve Math Puzzles* by Derrick Niederman is one of the best puzzle/Mensa-type books I have come across. What is unique about this book is that this book concentrates on clever mathematical puzzles requiring only a high school-level of math knowledge.

Most other puzzle books on the market: mix math questions with other types of puzzles (like word puzzles), require knowledge of math that is way too advanced for most run-of-the-mill puzzle fans (e.g, math olympiad type books or books requiring university-level math), or avoids math altogether. Niederman's book is focused in on math puzzles that are challenging but doable for most puzzle fans.

Another thing that I liked about this book is that the problems are truly challenging (but do not require advanced math knowledge). Niederman's problems usually require more insights and sophistication than comparable problems by other respected puzzle makers.

Finally, this book is endorsed by Mensa, a plus for people who want a seal of approval.

A book for people already familiar with photoshop, too complex for beginers, written in a dull way.

                        5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-07-08

This is an excellent book, which actually explains a lot about Photoshop for the newer user. It was recommended to me be by a professional and I am happy that I got it. Its only drawback is that none of the graphic charts are in color. Not terrible but it would certainly be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner in the Visual Quickstart series.......2007-06-11

I had photoshop 5 and the corresponding Visual Quickstart guide. When I upgraded to CS2, I bought this book based on my satisfaction with the previous version. I was not disappointed.

The concept of these books is to provide a 1-3 page illustrated lesson on real world tasks. With photoshop, that works particularly well. I am an occasional user, and this book helps me get great results fast.

                        4 out of 5 stars Good books.......2007-05-07

The book is pretty easy to get around and find what I want to do with the program.

5-year Final cut pro editor, who never learned Photoshop. I bought the for Dummies volume, which was little help. On page 101 now of this 300 or so page book, and am ecstatic over the doors it's already opened for the program. Read carefully, take your time... but you can't go wrong with this!
