Book Description
The story of tobacco, development of southern and Canadian waterpower and the creation of a university.
America has many merchant princes and captains of industry, but only three industrial kings: John D. Rockefeller in Oil, Andrew Carnegie in Steel, and James B. Duke in Tobacco," a financial writer recorded in Leslie's Weekly many years ago. That was the judgment of others, in and out of Wall Street. Opinions may differ as to relative rank, but certainly no men ever occupied more commanding position in their respective branches of the nation 's business. And it is significant that, in time, these three became America's foremost philanthropists.
Book Description
What is it about Greg Moore that caused so many to fall in love and so many to be devastated when he died? Greg's life was a celebration of youth, spirit, accomplishment, and charity. He was doing what he loved, with people he loved and respected. He was succeeding as an automobile racer and, even more, as a human being. He inspired everyone to act openly, positively, and with good humor. His easy grin and natural outgoing friendliness captured people's hearts and minds. When you met him you felt he was a friend for life. He made people like he was one of them, whomever they were. If you got close enough to say hello, to catch his eye, you felt you knew him. And anyone who knew him well thought of him as a man beyond his years, unusually free of the conflicts of youth. Although he seemed settled and mature, Greg Moore still revealed a sense of adventure and wonder. His achievements as a driver were impressive and have assured him a place in the galaxy of greats. Yet his spirit of sincerity and goodwill is the abiding memory that will live on. Through the memories of his family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and Greg himself, Greg Moore: A Legacy of Spirit tells the story of this remarkable young athlete. Through photographs and memorabilia that trace the his life and career, we are given a lasting image of a life lived well, but far too short.

The best.......2003-03-23
This is a super book, A must in every CART fan's book collection. Just a shame it had to be written.
Greg Moore: A Legacy of Spirit.......2002-11-28
When you combine the writing skills of Gordon Kirby and the legend of Greg Moore you get an outstanding book. There must be some really great racing going on in heaven. Although no book could do justice to Greg's life, this book comes close. I love everything that Gordon writes and this book is one of the most highly prized. This book is mandatory for any true Cart fan.
Lovely.......2002-05-22
It's an awesome review on Greg's life, with hundreds of color pictures... It tells the story beautifully. A must for every Greg and CART fan.
Worthy tribute for motorsport hero in the making: Greg Moore.......2001-11-27
This book about the young Canadian motorsport icon honours the life of one of the most cheerful and passionate drivers in CART racing. As a fellow Canadian, I have been well-informed about the young Maple Ridge, B.C. native and have enjoyed watching him climb to the top of the victory podium. A terrific biography of Greg Moore has been collected in a very indept account told by his beloved family through pictures and excerpts. Excellent pictures tell the journey that Greg Moore had taken from his first encounter with a motorized vehicle to the 1999 season where he drove the 800-plus horsepower Players champ racing machine.
It is hard to believe after looking at this book that a young Canadian who was taken from this earth all too soon could live such a full life.
Lovely book.......2001-07-15
Man, when I saw this book I thought "It must be great!" And when I had it on my hands it was even more perfect. For those fans who lost their idol there at Fontana, this is a must. It's the perfect book for a great driver and an even greater person.

Best JV book I've read........2000-12-24
I think I've read all of the Jacques books out there, and I easily enjoyed this one the most. The great thing about this one is that Jacques tells in his own words everything he experienced in his first year of F1.-Not just some boring author rehashing his past (again). If your like me and your curious what an open wheel racer thinks about, and experiences throughout a season, then you should definitely check this one out.
Who'd have thought it!.......2000-02-12
Well, you would never have guessed it without reading this book, but the "wildchild" of Formula One, Jacques Villeneuve, is actually pretty tame. He fusses about his eyes being sprayed with champagne on the podium, he is obsessive about changing his fireproofs up to three times a day while testing, small stones finding their way into his car bother him, he doesn't like loud noise and stuffs tissues in his ears to protect them at discos... Its all here! Worth a read if you're a dedicated JV fan!
One to read!.......1999-09-19
This book was a hard book to leave down and I found myself reading at all hours of the morning - engrossed in the life story of Jacques. It gave me an insight into the pros and cons of being an F1 driver while also informing me about the true character and personality behind him. I must say - you'd kick yourself for not buying this book.
P.S. Great pictures also!

Book Description
Jacques Villeneuve avoided motor racing when his famous father was alive. It's surprising that he became a race car driver soon after Gilles Villeneuve's tragic death in a racing crash. After trying different types of racing, Jacques moved to Formula One racing in l996. He performed very well that year as a rookie and then won the world championship in l997. Jacques' story is quite a remarkable journey.
Ken Sparling wrote "Michael Schumacher," another book in the "Champion Sports Biography" series.

The essential Jacques Villeneuve.......2001-04-03
This book is incredible. The photography is outstanding and the insight into the private world of Jacques Villeneuve was interesting. He's an extremely private individual and still hasn't given everything away - but for now, this book is well worth the effort.
A closer look at a champion!.......2000-02-08
There is no doubt that the photography in this book is spectacular. Any JV fan will appreciate getting a priviledged glimpse into his life - on and off the track, but was the picture of him at the urinal really necessary!
The best Villeneuve book on the market!.......1999-10-02
The pictures in this book give an impression on his personal life rather than just his career. It is good to be able to get the chance to see into their personal life without mobbing them on the streets.
Meraviglioso..........1999-07-29
I bought this book last year...Good pics (Italian photographer, you know...!), good lines. The impression you get about Jacques is that he's too pure to be true..I think that Gianni Giansanti cought the very essence of this young racing driver. I expecially like the pic at the end of the book, showing Jacques sitting in front of a window open over a big city (San Paolo in Brazil, if I remember well), in the shade, so that you can only get the shape of his body. Wonderful Jacques!
THE BEST JV BOOK I'VE EVER READ. BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-04-21
As soon as you open the book, the photos jump out at you. If you read F1 Racing magazine and enjoy the pictures they have in there, you will love the pictures in this incredible collection of JV shots.

In his own right - and how to write it wrong! :).......1997-12-03
Don't get me wrong - this is a very good book to read and is full of interesting background information on Jacques early life and career up to entering F1. The main problem I have with the book is not the information or content but the sychophantic style Hilton has. He writes the book from the approach of a starry-eyed fan convinced of the fact that his subject is already a legend rather than taking a less biased journalistic approach. He is never content to let any of his sources say anything bad at all about Jacques and even goes so far as to "interpret" what they really mean. The most glaring example of this is the interview with Richard Spenard (ran or still runs the F2000 school in Canada) where Spenard compares him with his father (two completely different backgrounds by the way) and states "He struck me as spoilt (deep chuckle), you know, definitely not like Gilles." and Hilton finds it necessary to point out (in italics) "Let's be careful about spoilt because, in this context, it has two meanings: given everything you want, or having a comfortable upbringing. Spenard, I sense, means the latter - something quite different." Why does Hilton find it neccesary to compromise what could have been a good objective look at the man and keep injecting his unobjective view? All in all though it is a good read, if you ignore the author's annoying thoughts, and I read it in one sitting. David Sidwell

Book Description
Tom Mix became a major star in the 1920s, earning over $900,000 for his movie work in 1921. Fox refused, however, to renew his contract in 1927, and that, coupled with the stock market crash of 1929, left him virtually penniless. In 1932 Mix resumed his movie career, making Destry Rides Again, his first "talkie." Later he became a circus owner and star. This is the story of Mix's life and career; it includes a comprehensive filmography of his work.
Book Description
"The fascinating and heartbreaking true story of the goniffs, shmendricks, and shlemiels who gave birth to the superhero comics-written with all the verve and velocity of a golden age comic book."-Art Spiegelman
Animated by the stories of some of the last century's most charismatic and conniving artists, writers, and businessmen, Men of Tomorrow brilliantly demonstrates how the creators of the superheroes gained their cultural power and established a crucial place in the modern imagination.
"This history of the birth of superhero comics highlights three pivotal figures. The story begins early in the last century, on the Lower East Side, where Harry Donenfeld rises from the streets to become the king of the 'smooshes'-soft-core magazines with titles like French Humor and Hot Tales. Later, two high school friends in Cleveland, Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, become avid fans of 'scientifiction,' the new kind of literature promoted by their favorite pulp magazines. The disparate worlds of the wise guy and the geeks collide in 1938, and the result is Action Comics #1, the debut of Superman. For Donenfeld, the comics were a way to sidestep the censors. For Shuster and Siegel, they were both a calling and an eventual source of misery: the pair waged a lifelong campaign for credit and appropriate compensation." -The New Yorker
Customer Reviews:
Men of Tomorrow.......2007-01-19
One of the most well-researched books about the birth and history of the comic book industry during the 20th century. Full of new information, especially about DC Comics. Hope to see a second volume that details the Timely/Marvel Comics Group.
Geeks and Dreamers.......2006-12-06
Men of Tomorrow is the story of the superhero comic book and the men who made it happen. With the riotous color and raucous thrills of the comics themselves, Gerard Jones reveals how nerds, bullies, charlatans, crooks, ordinary men, and real life heroes dared to dream and to change the way we see our world. Rich in detail, both inspirational and heartbreaking, Jones gives poignant insight into the lives of legends like Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and the other young dreamers who showed us how to look up in the blank blue sky and half believe that a man can fly.
Jones is best known for his work in comics (including Green Lantern and Justice League), but he's also a keen historical researcher and commentator on media and culture. It's a must read for anyone interested in the history of comics and the men who dreamed them into being.
The Conflict and the Chaos!.......2006-11-10
Sorry, couldn't help myself - had to front this review with a Stan Lee episode title circa 1966. This is the best big picture comics history I've ever read. I've read histories that were more nostalgic and others that were more about specific personalities, but this one delivered the whole enchilida in a very well-written insightful way. It's a long way from "All In Color For A Dime," the first one I ever read, and if you were a comic fan like I was as a kid, you'll enjoy this.
A very well-written history of our modern mythology........2006-09-30
This book is an exceedingly well-written history of the birth of the comic book.
In that simple description, you will find yourself immersed in American popular culture during the first few decades of the 20th century.
You'll get a taste of pulp fiction, science fiction, the concept of "fandom", corporate greed, organized crime (hence the addition of the word "gangsters" to the title), immigrant/Jewish culture, New York City...
...Jones tells his tale in a giddy rush. Yes, there's often overwhelming detail and minutiae, but we ARE dealing with "geeks" here. I wouldn't want it any other way.
It's also a book with broad appeal, and it's a shame it won't reach a bigger audience. This is a great book on American History, arguably the creation of a modern mythology.
I would easily recommend this to any fan of history, American or otherwise. It's that entertaining.
popular scholarship.......2006-02-01
Those reviewers who have trashed Jones's scholarship in this book are--if I may speak bluntly--wrong. The research of the book is indeed impressively thorough, and the long section "Notes on Research" at the book's end is that rarest of literary beasts, a bibliographical section that is actually (gasp!) pleasant to read. Jones documents every quotation and thoroughly, explicitly names all the sources, published and otherwise, for his information, excepting those few who requested to remain anonymous (mostly for legal reasons pertaining to the ongoing legal struggle over royalties from Superman). In creating any historical study, a writer must fill in some gaps through speculation and induction, and Jones calls particular attention to those few passages in which he has had to engage in guesswork, explaining his conclusions yet openly allowing for other interpretations. This is a fun, impressive book: Jones has skillfully woven sociological, economic, personal, and other sources, along with his own interviews, to create an enlightening, eminently readable work of history.
Book Description
In its thirty-five years on the air, Another World has been an innovator and groundbreaker in the realm of daytime television. The denizens of Bay City dealt with such taboo subjects as abortion and LSD addiction as early as the 1960's. Of course, they had their share of sex and murder, too. The Ultimate Another World Trivia Book will appeal to the insatiable appetite of Another World fans for facts about the show and its stars. This book contains the dish on all the daring story lines, backstage scandals, real-life romances, famous fans, and other trivia tidbits.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2000-01-22
Very informative, very absorbing. Full of taboo storylines, fun facts about the actors, behind the scenes drama, etc. I also recommend the AW 35th anniversary coffee table book. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Not for me........2006-01-16
From this book, I learned the Famous Price-to-Rent Ratio and it comes to my mind everytime I preview a property. It will teach you the seven things to look for in a bargain. One of these items was new to me. Buying REO requires two things to succeed: expertise and money. This book can help you with the expertise part but if you don't have some investment cash...you probably should seek another income stream. Lucky for you (and me), real estate has several income streams to pursue.
Excellent Book.......2005-05-16
I came across many books that sell you the "theory of real estate investing" or "why its so great to get involved in the real estate market". Thats nice. People who are looking into buying a real estate book already know that. But this book is different. The steps to take are clearly detailed, and Robert Irwin directs readers to the appropriate resources; such as internet websites.
I would highly recommend this book.
not a lot of hype.......2004-01-02
Robert Irwin seems to generate a wellspring of books filled with good advice about buying and investing in residential real estate. He has an urbane way of cutting out the hype that can fascinate but obscure realities for buyers and sellers. Like a good uncle, he doesn't tell you not to do it - he points out some strategies for protecting yourself from the abyss. He paints a picture of the effort you'll need, and lets you make the right choice. For example, he points out that some sheriffs' foreclosures allow the defaulters 60 days to pay up and reclaim the property even after you win the auction, and that you shouldn't begin your repairs until then. He reveals that For Sale by Owner properties are most often overpriced, so you may need to make too many inquiries before you succeed.
Irwin's investment practice is in California. Therefore, some of his advice doesn't hold up in other areas. Trust deeds, in which the seller holds the deed until the buyer's payments are complete, are not allowed in Pennsylvania, for example. Sellers would sometimes disappear after the buyer had invested many payments, leaving the buyer difficult recourse to the deed.
His updated chapter on government foreclosures is informative, although he states there is no chance for inspection. This is not quite accurate. You may not have a chance before you bid, especially in a hot market, but the contracts of HUD and Freddie Mac provide for an inspection contingency. Although you can't bargain on the "as-is" sales, you can withdraw entirely if the fixups are overwhelming. It's not much different from our private residential experiences in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and Florida, with the exception that in ordinary practice in these areas you may be able to renegotiate the price when the inspection reveals unfavorable conditions.
I especially enjoyed his explosion of the old saw that location is most important. As he pointed out, it may be true if you are buying a house to live in, but if you're investing, price and market would come first. A poor or unsuitable location can sometimes have its advantages.
A unique aspect is the coverage of ethics, done gently, in the form of honesty is the best policy. Taking all the short-term advantages while hurting others will lead to lack of trust and a bad name, which will diminish your opportunities in the long run.
We will soon be reading his new book, "Tips and Traps When Renovating Your Home." We think we can learn something useful about reducing our remodeling costs.
Nancy & Arnold Lapidus
Excellent Overview of the Process..........2003-02-23
I found this book very informative and to the point. Unlike many "how to get rich" authors, Irwin stays more on the task than on the "rah-rah" stuff. His tips and traps make good references for the uninitiated investor or purchaser. Best of all, his style is smooth and easy to read. If you're looking for a good "getting started" book, this is it.
From San Francisco Chronicle.......2002-12-11
#10 of year's 10 top real estate books. This survey book explains how to profit from virtually all bargain properties, such as foreclosures, probates, government property sales, REO (real estate owned by lenders) and other distressed-property situations. Emphasis is on low-cash purchase methods, along with methods for discovering these often-obscure realty bargains. by Robert J. Bruss
