Book Description
1928. Jay Gould reigned from Appomattox to the panic of 1893. Born with no inherited power, he died the possessor of the largest fortune ever gathered by one man in his time. His power was founded on cunning and perpetuated by craft, and at his death not even his fiercest enemies could deny that the greatest manipulative mind of the period had passed. To explain the financial phase of our civilization without the mention of Jay Gould is impossible. "His touch was as death," but his touch was universal, and the story of one of the greatest financial freebooters of all time is one with the story of the greatest period of industrial activity and commercial expansion of the United States. Illustrated.

An Actor's Guide--Making It in New York City
ASIN: 0823088944 |
Book Description
This celebrated survival guide for actors is still considered "the Bible of the Biz"-the most comprehensive book on the business of acting, informed by an inside view of how casting decisions are actually made-and it has now been updated and expanded to cover new on-line ways actors can promote their picture, rsum and video clips; interviewing and auditioning tips for the new crop of young actors; enhancing one's image; and finding jobs in emerging markets. Of course, the book still draws from dozens of industry professionals for authoritative advice on financial survival, networking, meeting agents and casting directors, the performing unions, selecting a wardrobe, studying a role-all the essential information actors have steadily relied on since 1987.
Customer Reviews:
what to wear, where to park, what to do when you get there..........2006-07-15
'How to Be a Working Actor' is divided into three sections: Nuts & Bolts, The Breaks, and Script Analysis.
Even after being in "the biz' for a few years, I found the first 217 pages (Nuts & Bolts) to be super helpful and informative. It suggests some of the most effective ways to create an actor resume, flattering colors and clothing types to wear to an agent interview, and the best books and guides to read to find work. It also explores ways to create a website, average wages for various acting jobs, and the differences between NY, LA and other cities (when I read this book I didn't want to move from NY to LA because of "parking", but when I did make the move I found out it wasn't that bad!)
This book features tips from casting directors and talent agents, and, like Michael Bofshever's 'Your Face Looks Familiar: Journey of a Working Actor', anecdotes from professional actors.
Maybe I shouldn't be writing this stellar review, when I'm an actor myself, looking to hone my skills and career abilility like the next person. But I believe the universe gives back, and there's a role out there for all of us.
Good info for audition hunters.......2006-07-09
This book is very helpful for anyone seeking to land an audition - once inside the door, your own talent will carry you......or not. The book helps you get a foot in that doorway.
a good start.......2003-09-23
I read this book when I first decided to risk a career in acting several years ago. It was very helpful in that it covered all the basics (and not-so-basics) that I would need to learn: terminology, career steps, pitfalls, different industries and cities. I still occasionally refer to it.
Yes, it is a little outdated now, and I would imagine it's more useful to those in LA or NYC with its heavy focus on TV and film, but I appreciated the little section on acting in Chicago. All in all, its breadth makes it a good investment.
FYI, for Chicago actors (bless your hearts), be sure to pick up "The Book," published by the trade paper PerformInk. A great (and necessary) resource guide to acting in Chicago.
Good.......2002-12-28
I like this book but is has been around for a while.
There are a couple of new books out there that are as good or better,
depending on where you are in your career.
Check our Twelve Step Plan To Beciming an Actor in LA.
It is a fabulous guide for anyone breaking in the business.

Excellent Resource and Must-Have.......2002-09-21
A very straight-forward resource for any aspiring actor. Novice or otherwise, this book gives the inside scoop and is honest about it. As I'm not one to want to put myself out-on-a-limb (no pun intended) without some plan of action and notion of how to stay solvent, what I really like about this book is the author's ability to fill in all the practical details and guide the reader through "The Business." In this day and age, where scams abound in and around Tinsel Towne, I wouldn't leave home to pound the pavement without first having read this book. I can't say enough good things about it!

In 1961 Roger Maris made Baseball history by hitting 61 home runs...and beating the great Babe RuthÂ's record. Yet heÂ's still on the outside of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Has his time finally come? Did Maris earn his Âtitle to fame?"
Customer Reviews:
Mark McGuire.......2007-05-28
You said he could have been as big as Mark McGuire? I do not thing Roger took steroids my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!
This Legend Deserves Better.......2005-03-15
As a teenager at Busch Stadium I thrilled to watch Roger Maris play right field during two Cardinal championship seasons. In "Still A Legend" I was introduced to the man wearing number "9". In this work, Harvey Rosenfeld does a good job at projecting the whole Roger Maris. Comparable emphasis is given to Maris the baseball player, Maris the family man, Maris the son of Fargo and Maris the faithful Catholic.
Roger Maris grew up an Fargo, North Dakota where he attended Catholic schools and met his wife, Pat, while developing into a great baseball star. After the minor leagues, Roger continued his march to stardom as a Cleveland Indian and a Kansas City Athletic. Even in Cleveland he was regarded as a surly loner.
After his playing time in his adopted home of Kansas City, Roger was ready for the Yankee pinstripes but not for the glare of the New York press. Although he changed teams, Roger retained a privacy which would forever bar the press from his world and would limit his enjoyment of public adulation. The press would demonize Roger in his pursuit of Babe Ruth's record, while manufacturing the legend of a feud between himself and his roommate, Mickey Mantle.
Throughout the ups and downs of his stormy and injury plagued career, Roger retained his love of baseball which was damped only during the most severe of the onslaughts by fans and media.
This book wears its themes on its sleeve. The main themes are that Roger was not properly appreciated, his purported surliness was merely a justified demand for privacy and that he has been unjustly denied admission into the Hall Of Fame.
Although written by an obvious fan, this book does not do justice to Roger Maris. Too often the story degenerates into a litany of quotes from Roger, his teammates, friends and detractors to be classified as good writing. The sections dealing with the media bias and the injustice of his exclusion from the Hall Of Fame run on too long. This book is more editorial than biography. Still, this book tells much about Roger Maris. It also tells us much about ourselves, the fans. Yankee fans booed the Roger Maris whom they regarded a surly usurper. By contrast, Cardinal fans loved Jolly Roger. This is in keeping with our reputation as the greatest fans in baseball. The story of how the Cardinals restored Roger's enjoyment of the game and delayed his retirement for two years confirm the stories I remember from the time. It is too bad that Roger did not become a Cardinal in 1960. He could have been as big as Mark McGwire.
Customer Reviews:
Good Biography Of Roger Maris!.......2003-04-25
This was a very good life story of Roger Maris. You get a good look at his early baseball years with the Kansas City Athletics.
He is then traded to the New York Yankees. As a result of this trade he is able to play on several world championship baseball
teams. The year that Maris broke the all time season homerun record is well covered. You get a good coverage of the day to day events of his life until he breaks the record of 60 homeruns
set by Babe Ruth. You are also told of the 61st homerun by Maris in good detail. This is a very good book about a record setting
baseball player. Read this. You will enjoy it.
Excellent blend of narrative and interviews honor Maris.......2000-08-02
Maury Allen's book is a touching tribute to one of baseball's greatest players. Written in part to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Roger Maris' 61 in `61 home run feat, it honors the tormented athlete with memories from the people who knew him best. Family, friends, and teammates reflect on and remember the man who was loved and hated for toppling Babe Ruth's home run record. Most of the book understandably focuses on the 1961 season and examines his upper Midwest childhood and his post-'61 career from such perspective. While Allen doesn't hesitate to weave Maris' record-breaking year into any stage of the narrative, he is careful to expose a gentler Maris the press actively ignored and defiled. The numerous interviews, including ones from Maris' father and high school coaches as well as players Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Mike Shannon, bring great honesty to his tortured character. It also is a strong attempt to redeem a player who in life never rose to the glory he deserved.
This book serves more as a biography of Roger Maris the baseball player and man who broke Babe Ruth's home run record than Roger Maris the person, and there's little on his personal and family life, perhaps echoing on page the private man he was in life. Nevertheless, it more than adequately creates a portrait of a small town hero whose devotion to baseball was never bested by his love for his family and friends.

61*
ASIN: 0892046627 |
Book Description
"61 in '61." For years, the phrase held a special place in baseball lore. In three simple words, baseball fans could remember one of the most captivating summers in baseball history, a summer that the most celebrated record in baseball fell.
It was the summer in which two Yankees, everybody's hero, Mickey Mantle, and a farm kid from South Dakota, Roger Maris, staged a stunning assault on Ruth's record.
61* expresses how The Sporting News covered that exciting summer. From its spring training dispatches, through each and every home run, through the controversial so-called 'asterisk' ruling, to the final record-breaking home run, 61* chronicles in week-by-week format the home run race, up to and including the Yankees' World Series victory that year.
Customer Reviews:
Rewriting History- Mantle was a Draft Dodger.......2006-12-20
Crystal's rewriting of history does no one any service. His historical rewriting about Mantle complaining that he "failed" his draft induction physical is laughable at best. Mantle was selected to the all star team that year! Mantle was known as the "fastest man to first base" at this time, and his complaint that he couldn't serve is a joke. Boston Red Sox's Ted Williams, while in Korea on his SECOND tour of military duty (WWII was his first), stated when he was crash landed his fighter jet, he ran away from it "FASTER THAN MICKEY MANTLE!" Crystal a draft dodger himslf (Vietnam), should be ashamed of this portrayal of Mantle and rewriting history! Disgusting.
61*.......2001-10-30
What a "maaaaahvelous" book put out by Ron Smith and Billy Crystal. A perfect companion to the movie. This book takes us baby boomer Yankee fans back to a magical time in our lives.
The photgraphy is phenomenal and the text --smooth,easy to read and very informative. I loved this book so much I ordered for my sister for Christmas. I have no doubt she will enjoy as much as I did. Everything in the 6l season for the Yankees was amazing, Mantle, Maris, Ford, the unbelievable infeild--this book covers it ALL to perfection. i must read for aging Yankee fans.
If you loved the movie..........2001-10-18
Like I did, you will love this book. It is a great companion piece to the movie.
Most of the book is full of pictures and narratives about the great 1961 season when Mantle and Maris were chasing the Babe's home run record. (Aside, Maris' 61 home runs, which stood for 37 years, is now only 7th best all time?). There are lots of pics of the real Mantle and Maris as well as a discussion of the movie. And of course, there is the postscript of M and M after their Yankee careers ended. And sadly for both, very early and untimely deaths.
M and M were the talk of baseball and New York in 1961. Forty years later as we watch their descendants try to bring New York together with another World Series crown we can remember the innocence the joy and heartbreak of 61 and we can thank Billy Crystal for helping us to relive the innocence that was our youth.
Jason.......2001-08-31
This is the way sports should be! Two men, who gave it their all
for their team. It was more for the sport and not the money!
Great book!
Excellent detailed account of "the Race"..........2001-06-07
Wonderful week-by-week breakdown of the race for Ruth's record...the writing is just detailed enough about the games, but, better, the words and pictures put you right in the Yankee locker room during the 1961 season. You get a true feeling for the pressure that Maris went through along with Mantle's aborted effort due to injury...there's also plenty of charts and graphs to show the breakdown by game, pitcher (left or right handed) and comparison to Ruth's pace. Finally, I thought it was a great touch to add the McGwire chase and breaking of the record and how the Maris family (his sons) was on hand. Probably not a better history of that memorable summer written anywhere and certainly none as pleasing to the eye...highly recommended.

Quentin Tarantino, director of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and writer of True Romance, Natural Born Killers and From Dusk Till Dawn, is undeniably the cult director of the decade. Here, Paul Woods traces the life, films and influences of the self-confessed 'movie geek' who has become the film stylist of the nineties, and one of Hollywood's hottest properties. Fully updated to include Tarantino's latest hit movie, Jackie Brown.

A must for a Tarantino follower........1999-01-06
King Pulp is a reaveling biography of Quentin Tarantino(movie wise). The book tells many interesting facts that even the most hardcore Tarantino followers will hear for the first time. Though the book tells alot about his movies,It should have gone more indepth about the man behind them. There are many very cool photos of him on the job and pictures from his movies. A must read for any Tarantino devotee.
Book Description
Here, accompanied by dozens of unique photographs, are the very best of Victor Bockris's infamous interviews, essays, and observations on the stars of downtown Manhattan in the 1970s and 1980s. The internationally acclaimed biographer Bockris was there as a witness, friend, collaborator, and co-conspirator. Some of the stars were founding members of Beat or Punk, others were just passing through. But all of them-rockers, rebels, artists, and intellectuals-revealed more to Bockris than they did to any other writer: Allen Ginsberg, Richard Hell, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Debbie Harry, William Burroughs, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richards, Terry Southern, Martin Amis, and Susan Sontag. Bockris's conclusion-that Punk owed the Beats a big debt and that the Beats were in turn re-animated by the Punks-is argued from the perspective of someone who was in the thick of it, and who loved every minute of it.

BradyGames Tropico Official Strategy Guide provides comprehensive reference charts of all structures and the most efficient ways to utilize them. Detailed information on social engineering, political policies, tourism, and industrial growth, allow players to be successful dictators of the island! Strategies for every scenario in the game, plus tips on how to quickly achieve advancements.
Customer Reviews:
This book was a must for me!.......2002-05-13
This book is a great help to the beginner and long-time player alike. I found great information, writing clearly and easy to understand. Helped give me the confidence to try some of the hardest scenarios!
Totally worthless.......2001-08-09
Save your money. There is nothing new in this book. You can learn as much by reading the directions that come with the game, then playing the game a few times.
Free Unofficial Guide Is Better!.......2001-06-20
This official guide rehashes most of the information included in the game manual. It does include some mechanics (like how scores are calculated) and strategies for the individual scenarios.
If you want winning strategies that can be applied to most cases, download the very good Unofficial Tropico Strategy Guide from gamespot.com
Disappointing strategy guide.......2001-05-29
This strategy guide is a disappointment. Apart from strategies for the individual scenarios, the book is almost a complete re-hash of the game's manual. If you're looking for slightly more detail (or better proofreading) than in Tropico's manual and can't be bothered to look for the information online, then this book is for you. Otherwise, spend your money on something else.
Book Description
BradyGames' Tropico 2: Pirate Cove Official Strategy Guide features winning strategies for every episode. Helpful hints on rewarding buccaneers, increasing pirate stash, and improving the workforce. Comprehensive stats for every building and structure. Strategies for keeping the pirates happy and becoming the ultimate pirate king!
Customer Reviews:
Amusing, time-wasting fun.......2006-03-24
Like the original Tropico game, this game is a fantastic time-waster when you just need to kick back and have a good time. Tropico 2 is a simulation game where you are a pirate captain ruling over your own little island in the Carribean. Each level of the game brings extra challenges, allowing you to learn the game as you go along. The storyline is quite silly and perfectly piratey. If you're not interested in running the campaigned storyline, there's a "sandbox" mode, where you can just grab an island and see where it leads.
If you've played the original Tropico game, you'll be able to jump right in-- the graphics and gameplay are the same.
Yarr!
Could've been better.......2003-05-15
While there was some good information in this book, I was hoping for more behind-the-scenes info. The advertised 'stats of every ship' is nothing more than screen shots of the vessels and buildings that you can get out of the in-game help.
That being said, it does have some good techniques for multi-ship cruising and tips for the campaign.

Customer Reviews:
Turning Dummies into smarties :).......2007-05-17
I have had my Quickbooks software for almost two years now. The only part of the whole entire download I could ever figure out how to use was my employees information files, and sending invoices. I own a construction company and have no bookkeeping education, and figured my investment was a very big waste of money. The language was geared towards college graduates in the field. The different catagories did not pertain to my business needs...and without understanding what those catagory titles meant to begin with...I may have well been reading greek. My last resort before scrapping the whole intire software and hiring a firm to do my bookkeeping, was to buy the Dummies book for Quikbooks. Within the first hour of reading a few pages..and scimming over topics of importance to me and my company..I was entering invoices that had been paid, setting up ledgers, writing payroll checks etc. My first dealings with the Dummies books was years ago when I happened across one that was Internet for Dummies. Every Dummies book since then has been nothing short of a blessing to me. They ALL are so brilliantly worded and illistraited, that it is as if someone is standing right in front of you talking to you in every day lamen language. I truly believe that anyone who has a problem with anything where there is a Dummies book to help on that subject...you'd be a fool not to buy it. I look forward to having my own library section of Dummy books and will continue to learn learn learn!
My user likes it........2007-03-08
I am a network administrator, so I don't use this book directly. It seems to serve my end user's purpose though, so from that perspective it's a good book.
quickbooks for dummies.......2007-01-11
All of the 'dummies' series of books have been helpful. This one is no exception. Whenever the 'docs' from any program are written for programmers, I turn to this series to find out how to really run the software. It should be included with the software package.
Quickbooks 2005 for Dummies - Good for new users!.......2006-11-05
The Quickbooks 2005 for Dummies Book worked quite well for me... Well written with plain english explainations it got me going. It is understandable even if you don't understand the accounting lingo. This book does not assume that you are an expert at operating a computer either. It is great for beginners that have to do the accounting for a small business themselves and yet don't have a lot of accounting experience. It explains everything needed to perform the most needed accounting functions of a small business.
The only reason the book I didn't give the book 5 stars was that it doesn't cover some of the more advanced features of Quickbooks 2005 which I still need to learn. But this book was written for the person that needs to computerize their small business accounting quickly.
Pleased with content.......2006-03-21
I was greatly pleased with the thorough explinations in this book. Easy to read and follow. Written in 'layman' terms.
