Book Description
Money, speculation and the birth of the US railways. Love, corruption and murder. The life and death of ?Colonel? James Fisk Jr. is a remarkable tale. From his humble beginnings in small-town America of the 1830s and 40s until the time of his death in scandalous circumstances at the age of 37 he had risen to become one of the most notorious and colorful characters in the history of Wall Street. Throughout his flamboyant personal life, Jubilee Jim faced great danger ? during the Civil War, in the protection of his railway interests and during New York riots of 1871 ? and in his business career periods of intense excitement ? such as in his ongoing rivalry with such giants of American business history as Daniel Drew and Cornelius Vanderbilt and in his exploits with Jay Gould during the infamous Black Friday gold scandal. In addition, he also found time to try his hand as a peddler, circus showman, a Civil War profiteer, an adulterous lover, a theatre impresario, a shipping magnate ... and much more.

Book Description
When Notre Dame chose Ty Willingham as their new football coach at the end of the lackluster 2001 season, few believed he could turn around the underperforming team.Willingham did that and much more, restoring Notre Dame to the national spotlight and giving the Irish's millions of fans a sense of pride and mission for the first time in years. Along with doubling the team's number of wins, Willingham vigorously rebuffed the conventional wisdom that the dearth of black coaches in college and professional sports was due to a lack of available talent. The first black coach ever hired by Notre Dame in any sport, he became the biggest sports story of 2002 and gave emphatic notice that he is a major force to be reckoned with in the years ahead. In RETURN TO GLORY, Alan Grant, a young sportswriter who played football under Willingham at Stanford, takes readers inside Notre Dame's program as no one has seen it before. He masterfully recreates, week by week, the drama of a team playing above all expectations and the maneuverings of a master strategist facing the biggest challenge of his life.Notre Dame fans and general readers caught up by Notre Dame's storybook season will make RETURN TO GLORY the best-read football book of the year.
Customer Reviews:
Alan Grant is Extremely Racist.......2005-09-07
It's not only evident in this book, but in his follow-up articles on ESPN's website.
This author is a shame to his alma mater and to mankind.
As far as the book goes, it's rediculously a waste of time.
On star is too much.......2005-09-03
Alan Grant went to Stanford?
You'd think that a Stanford grad would be a little bit more literate than, "he got his drink on".
All through the book, I'm thinking, "Is Grant related to Willingham?"
If you really want to read the book, go to your library. If you actually buy it, you will feel like you've been on a date with a prostitute. Used and abused.
There's a reason that this book is rated below 2 millionth on Amazon! In fact, I think they only have a million books listed, this happens to be twice worst thann the best.
What glory?.......2004-12-01
Considering Willingham was just fired, I can't recommend this book. Sounds like the glory was an illusion.
I think this book should be classified as fiction.......2004-11-16
The book, written by a Willingham disciple who I believe played for the coach at Stanford, characterizes Tyrone Willingham as a man who overcomes obstacles after meeting them head on. While the coach does have a great history behind him, it is just that. Mike Ditka once said that the past is for cowards and losers. He is right.
The man portrayed in this book is not the man in charge in South Bend in 2004. The true story to be told is one of a man who is in way over his head. Mr. Grant's portrayal of the coach forgets to include the coach's desire to foster the "cult of Willingham" which places devotion to the coach well over and above winning. He also forgets to mention the coach's stubborn arrogance, his unwillingness to fire those around him who fail to live up to expectations (aka Buzz Preston, Kent Baer and Bill Diedrick), his disdain for Notre Dame's pressure and his misunderstanding of the meaning of the word "excellence".
This supposed "no-nonsense" coach seems to believe that six wins is discernable progress after a five win season. What happened to this Return to Glory? It is more like "Welcome to Mediocrity".
Full of hyperbole and an undying devotion to his former coach, Mr. Grant chronicles Lionel Tyrone's first season with the Irish. He demonstrates that Tyrone Willingham may have had what it takes to bring a two bit program like Stanford to near-acceptability in a weak Pac-10, but the man is just not up to running a big-time program at an elite football school (if Notre Dame is still that after his tenure). He also accurately portrays how the coach and his staff plodded through an eight game winning streak with smoke, mirrors and dumb luck.
What he misses are the two years after this when he bombed out, threw his former quarterback under the bus and brought in the worst recruiting class in decades. With monumental losses to Michigan and USC, a 6-6 record in his last 12 home games and unprecedented failures, it is just silly to look at this book as anything more than an homage to a shadow of a man by a writing who loves the idea of his mentor more than his mentor's actuality.
Perhaps Mr. Grant can add a supplement in the paperback version entitled: "Urban Meyer: the true Return to Glory".
I for one wish I could return this book to Dr. Kevin White.
Return To Glory: Smoke and Mirrors.......2004-11-15
This book is pure fiction by a former player of Tyrone Willingham's at Stanford. Grant falls way short in is half hearted attempt to understand anything about a winning football tradtion at a school that identifies its very existence around football. He is a hater and now is spewing lies about how Notre Dame is irrelvant on ESPN.com because his book is no longer selling. More like his book is irrelvant. This man has no integrity as a journalist.

Excellent book!!!.......2001-04-02
This is one of the best set of tutorials you can find. This book is geared to Lightwave 5.6 but is very useful if you use Inspire or LW 6.5. This book contains a tutorial on building a castle that would be a book unto itself! Be forwarned that if you are using Inspire you may have to improvise with some of the tutorials, as they call for numeric functions or plug-ins that are not present in Inspire. FYI, after seeing the missing functionality of Inspire, I forked over the cash for LW 6.5 and haven't regretted it!
Must buy if you own inspire 3d.......2000-10-09
If you bought inspire and needed more direction, BUY THIS BOOK. There are some usable techniques and insight from guys who make a living doing this. Hands-on, must do all tutorials. If you are the skimmer type reader, save you money. They should let inspire 3d users know that all tutorials can be done in both and differences between it and LW are explained.
I EXPECTED MORE.......2000-09-30
ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK TRIES TO PUT THE READER IN A PRO LOGIC, I THINK THAT FAILS BECAUSE OF HIS BAD TACTIC.IT BEGINS WITH SOME BASIC INTRODUCTION TO LIGHTWAVE AND ISPIRE 3D (1 CHAPTER FOR SO HUGE PROGRAMS !!!) AND CONINUES WITH COMPLETE PARADIGMS IN THE OTHER CHAPTERS.THE WRITER ASSUMES YOU ARE A PRO, FAMILIAR WITH THE INTERFACE AND TECHNIQUES AND FORCES YOU TO BUILD A HOLE CASTLE (PLUGINS REQUIRED BUT MISSING) WHAT?????!!!!!.JUST IGNORE IT AND TRY ANOTHER BOOK OR ONLINE TUTORIAL.TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE (THE CASTLE AND OTHERS-IF YOU LIKE THE IDEA OF A CASTLE GO TO EUROPE)
I'm not really pleased with this book..........2000-08-22
I know that LightWave is an exelent program for organic modeling. So I looked forward to learn more about metanurbs and patch modeling techniques. But I found only few words about it. Instead, the autor spent 2/3 of the book explaining in detail how to build a perfect castle. Yes, it looks nice, but that's not what I was looking for. Also the book has a lot of mistakes, but they're usually obvious.
Excellent tutorials, merely reasonable explanations.......2000-07-19
Inside Lightwave 3D has some of the best explained tutorials I have read. Having had frustrating experiences with more tutorials than not, I was pleased at the level of detail and general accuracy of information and details. I have withheld the 5 star rating only because I would have liked more explanation of settings (okay, I set FastFresnel to 500%, 630 nm, but what does tweaking those settings give me?) to get desired effects. In trying to apply techniques I picked up in the tutorials, I found unintended "features" in my animations from using some settings... and didn't know enough about the options for plug-ins to know best what to tweak to fix problem (e.g. brightening stars on the limb of the Earth as camera angle changes). But a fine book never the less and certainly one of the better ones available on 3-D animation and modeling.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent collection of Lightwave tutorials.......2002-10-08
First off, this book is worth the price alone for the massive coverage of the surface editor. Two full chapters are devoted to surfacing and the author includes some very useful tips involving the surface editor. The chapter on architecture is excellent, you will truly become a master of beveling after completing the tutorials in this chapter.
The title is somewhat misleading though. The majority of the book focuses on LW6.5, only the last chapter is devoted to version 7.0. The last chapter moves very quickly through a couple of the new features in 7.0 and the coverage of these topics is very light. Saslite is briefly mentioned in this chapter, as are a few other notable differences in the version.
However, due to the vast similarity in the 6.5/7.0/7.5 interface, you'll have little if any problems working through the tutorials in the book.
This is a definite must-have for any Lightwave user. The book may be difficult to find these days, but you may get lucky like I did and find it for a bargain through one of the used book resellers.
Lightwave Applied, Version 6.5 & 7.......2002-05-06
I am a totally new user to Lightwave so this may help some newbies. This book is excellent for getting your feet wet and exploring a lot of what Lightwave is capable of. The reason I did not rate it five stars is because I would have like the authors to provide more instruction on the more advanced modeling tools like subpatching and metaforming. But, in all,
a well done book worth every penny.
Good tutorials, but it's missing too much!.......2002-04-07
The book is divided into 10 tutorials. Each tutorial covers its section well, but I felt that there is A LOT of important topics it doesn't discuss AT ALL!
It goes over BASIC polygon modeling, a lot on textures lighting, creating landscapes, BASIC animation, and bones.
It has no, or very little info on advanced modeling tools (splines, meatballs, etc), more useful animation techniques, and image mapping. Each chapter starts by havinf you load a pre-made model off the CD-ROM, but it never tells you how you would go about making the model!! The chapter on animation is extremelely basic.
I would only recommend this book to someone looking for a book on special topics in Lightwave. It's missing too much stuff.
Wonderful Extras!.......2002-01-11
This book is terrific! I especially loved the extra tutorial of creating a character for celshader found through their website. The tutorials are written with pure exactness. I had no trouble following the steps. Infact, I learned quite abit just by following along. You won't be sorry.
Hits the high spots(really well) skips a few........2002-01-07
Well, being a some what regular user of lightwave the first chapter was useless to me, Dave Jerrard did a wonderful job explaining all there is to know about texturing. Half the book is using Gradients and layer textures, just what I was after. Plus he goes into great detail when it comes to bones and ways to get them to morph the object just right. However he barely touches weight maps, Sasquatch(oh come on its a hair generator next time give a tuto on the best ways to render and model human hair.) and there is very little on lightwave 7.0. Very little.
But this book is wonderful for n00b's. They will find it very helpful. I myself have found it to be helpful but lacking in a few areas...
Book Description
For anyone who has ever wondered where our popular culture is taking us, Hating Women is at once an electrifying social commentary and a clarion call for change. In Hating Women, Shmuley Boteach, the passionate social critic and relationship guru, examines an alarming trend of misogyny in our popular culture, and laments that women themselves are playing into the hands of the money-hungry, morally bankrupt, sex-obsessed culture that is exploiting them as the ultimate cheap commodity. For example, he points to the popularity of a whole slew of reality television shows that have saturated our culture with what he deems the four vulgar archetypes of women -- the Greedy Gold Digger, the Publicity-Seeking Prostitute, the Brainless Bimbo, and the Backstabbing Bitch -- and their equally offensive male counterparts -- the Crotch-Scratcher, the Harem Gatherer, the Selfish Spouse, and the Porn Addict.
Misogyny, in the guise of entertainment, is reaching a fever pitch, but Boteach envisions a way to correct this downward spiral and revive the timeless feminine ideals of nobility, dignity, grace, and inner strength.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for everyone, especially women.......2007-09-13
Women have been undervalued for eons and recently we lost the concept of what a "Lady" is. For all the women out there who complain that there are no gentlemen, there are. But for a woman to attract a gentleman, she has to become a lady first.
I read this book twice already and am planning to buy it for more friends than before.
Must read for concerned men and women.......2007-06-15
I throughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. Boteach's critique of the media/Hollywood portrayal of women is a vital read. He shows how our society has devalued and degraded women. Anyone with daughters should especially read this, as Boteach shows how even fourteen year olds are being pressured to conform to a perverse cultural view of women as sex objects. In a time of cultural sleaze, Boteach's moralistic concerns are right on the mark.
The only thing that annoyed me was his constant reference to the Book of Genesis, which is a bogus account of our creation. I recommend just skipping those parts and getting to the heart of Boteach's argument, which is very persuasive.
Why do women hate women?.......2006-10-29
This book is so true. Why is it that women are so upset with this book....with the truth. Every thing Shmuley says is so on target, women have given their power away and accepted being treated like sex objects. Just look at the entertainers girls idolize, they are strippers and behave like whores, all under the umbrella as being entertainers. Why do women fight against the message that we should demand respect and that we should stop dressing like whores and that we should stop seeing ourselves as nothing more than sexual objects. Until women start seeing themselves as beings that deserve respect men won't see us that way. I think Shmuley is brave to tell the truth.
Throw out all your other relationship books...........2006-03-11
This is the one. After ending a long relationship twelve years ago, I was back in the dating game. After a couple of so-so short term relationships and hundreds of dates, I started to think there was something wrong with me, though in the back of my mind something seemed different about the men I was meeting compared to the men I dated even just a decade or two ago. I bought every relationship book out there, The Rules, Why Men Like Bitches, Mars and Venus, etc., but none of them have made me feel like this book has. This book has finally put into words for me what I've been feeling deep down inside for a long time. Although, I still feel like I may never meet a gentleman, I realize now that's it's not my fault. Most of the other relationship books seem to overtly or subtlety say we (women) need to change somehow to "get" a man. Now this is not a book about how we can "get" a man or is even that encouraging that we may ever meet a real gentleman, but it is a book that finally tells a woman that it's right to expect manners, respect and class from men and although it may be lonely, it's the only real spiritual way to go. Although, I've been dumped for women who will "put out right away", be willing to fight over a womanizer, and in general bend over backwards to attract and keep these creeps, I now feel, after reading this book, that it's ok. I'm better off not stooping to the level of these woman just to get a guy like that. Believe me, there have been many times that I felt tempted and wondered what was wrong with me, was I missing something. There are many woman willing to cross our picket lines, but I do believe as Rabbi Shmuley does, that they lose in the end anyway. In this one book I feel Rabbi Shmuley is giving me the advice that I never really received from my parents or anyone else. It will really change my life.
Hating Men: Shmuely Boteach's Strategy for Getting Women to Act Like Ladies.......2005-11-05
OK. Let's begin with a basic definition: Misandry. Never heard of it? Of course you haven't. The term refers to hatred of men. The reason, I suspect, why you probably have never heard of the term before, and why Microsoft Word XP-Sp2 does not even recognize it, is because it would never have occurred to anyone to find a label for a sentiment that has become, after forty years of feminist indoctrination, so natural and seemingly justified. After all, what decent person would not hate a pack of vulgar, violent rapists, witch-burners, exploiters, bullies, and sex maniacs? What kind of heartless soul could not possibly agree with Boteach's contention that it is the fairer gender's burden to civilize the gender of lesser creed, much in the same way that Rudyard Kipling's "The White Man's Burden" was religiously read as a hymn in Churches throughout the British Empire? After all, didn't Victorian England assume that the British Empire was God's gift to nations that they colonized?
If you find my comparison of Boteach's male-bashing with Kipling's overt racism offensive:
* Why is it that Boteach consistently blames men for their crass, boorish behavior, but also blames men for women's crass, boorish behavior? Surely every individual should be responsible for his or her own behavior regardless of circumstances. Isn't that the main message of the Torah?
* Why is it that Boteach attributes negative female stereotypes to the proliferation of misogynistic attitudes prevalent in society while upholding every single negative male stereotype?
* Why is it that he justifiably labels men who complain about their wives' obesity as hypocrites, yet blames men for the fact that their wives are fat? If it is hypocritical of men to complain that their wives are fat when they themselves are fat, surely it is also hypocritical of Boteach to contend that women grow fat because men fail to give them enough attention.
* Why is it that women who indulge in affairs, get to blame their non-attentive, disinterested husbands? With whom are they having affairs? Surely not with neglected, embittered husbands!
* Why is it that Boteach, an Orthodox Rabbi who seems to identify himself as a Conservative Republican has to stoop to resorting to radical Feminism in order to promote family values and speak against promiscuity? Is sexual immorality bad only for women? Is it only dehumanizing to portray women as money-grubbing sluts, or is it also dehumanizing to portray men as sex-grubbing womanizers? And what should bother us more about these respective stereotypes: the fact that they are not true about every man or woman, or the fact that they are becoming increasingly true about the human race as a whole?
* Why is it that whenever I read the phrase "studies show" with respect to the innate differences between men and women, I know in advance that I will hear something negative about men? If, for example, studies show that men are more aggressive and competitive than women, shouldn't that explain why most criminals and warriors, but also CEOs, politicians, successful businessmen, and lawyers are men?
* Why is it that All of the reviewers so far can be divided into readers who agree with Boteach's thesis that men are to blame for the fact that women expose themselves and those who agree that men are to blame for the fact that women are exposing themselves, but still consider Boteach to be a sexist because he has the gall to make any demands whatsoever on women in addition to the far more numerous demands he makes upon men?
* Why is it that I know in advance that readers who attack this review will dismiss me as a woman-hater without addressing the substance of my lament?
* Why is it that I know in advance that readers who attack this review will angrily ask me where I derive the gall to make any demands on women whatsoever if I am not a woman myself but will not ask the same question to female readers?
* Why is it that I know in advance that readers who attack this review will angrily ask me whether I have ever experienced the pain of being turned down for a job or be paid less because of my gender but won't ask me what it is like to be expected to work late at night and let my wife deal with the kids?
* Why is it that I know in advance that readers who attack this review will angrily ask me whether I have ever experienced what it is like to have my bellybutton stared at all day by a sex-starved male colleague, but they won't ask me what it is like to share an office with someone who exposes her bellybutton?
* Why is it that I know in advance that readers who attack this review will angrily ask me whether I have ever experienced the pain of rejection from a man who was clearly looking for a model, but none of you will ask me what it is like to be rejected because I seem to lack the testosterone required to climb the corporate ladder and earn a five-figure salary?
Here's why: because, as everyone knows, it is men who rule the world. How do we know this? After all, men enjoy so many numerous advantages over women. How do we know that the numerous advantages women enjoy over men are not a result of accepted, tacit discrimination in favor of women? Impossible! After all, it is men who rule the world, don't they?
Ah, the circular logic is so convincing! So, let's not let a few observations get in the way of what we already know to be true!

A very helpful guide-the only one out there that I know of!.......1999-04-25
I found this stratedgy guide to be extremely helpful. I have been playing this game for a while but until I read the guide I really could not score as high as I do now. Many pointers as to how to kill the many "Big Bugs" at the end of each level. I liked it and disagree with the writer from Texas. All of the stratedgy guides I have for all other games (which cost much, much more are in black and white as well. I'm happy! Thanks Knights.
Disappointing for a guide/strategy book.......1999-02-04
The authors good intentions fell short in helping one better understand the game strategy and ability to figure out problems encountered in the various missions. Black and white illustrations were hard to decipher and help topics were too brief, often only one sentence, to be of much aid. More text content and color photographs would have made for a much nice guide. Although one will find some help topics of interest, the player will still have to mostly depend upon their own trial and error mistakes to learn how to advance in this game.

Awesome, Easily understood, beginners to experts, Lots of unique ways to make processes easier and simpler. Well worth it!
Microsoft excel 2003 bible.......2007-05-14
This is a good reference, especially helpful is the CD included. It would be helpful to someone just learning excel, but also goes into some depth of higher level functions.
Excell Bible extremly useful........2007-05-14
I had went to an $149 course on Excel and the teacher kept praising this book (they were trying to sell you one on the spot)and it is very useful.
The course owners shot themselves in the foot, though..I was also planning to take an Access course, but instead just bought the Access Bible.
The vendor shipped quickly and the book was in new condition as advertised.
Great tool for Excel 2003!!!.......2007-05-13
If your like me and own both Office 2003 and are dabbling in Office 2007, then you want to hold on to this reference for Excel 03 just in case. Like all his books this is an accurate, concise, extensive reference tool for the beginner as well as the advanced user. This is my fourth excel book by Mr. Walkenbach and they are all of equal caliber. They all contain general background information as well as information dealing with other programming areas of excel (so that even if you only purchase a book like the VBA programming guide, you will still learn about macro programming and other general excel functions). Like all his books, this one gives the user a complete library of useful and professional approaches towards working with and solving excel problems. Good Job Mr Walkenbach!
Bible Study.......2007-03-27
This is my second MS-related Bible purchase and I really do love the series. The Excel Bible gets a little technical and somewhat over my head as a slightly above-average user, but it's really good information. I always shyed away from macros, but it (and a few experts) really helped me write macros for a file that's being distributed company-wide.
Just like a real Bible, I just want to be able to reference it when I need to.
