Book Description

Over the last five years, the number of women-owned businesses has grown at twice the rate of all U.S. firms; in the next few years, the number is expected to surpass the six million mark. Kitchen Table Entrepreneurs tells the inspirational stories of eleven low-income women who have marshaled the creative energy, confidence, and capital necessary to start their own small businesses. These women, who have used their entrepreneurial skills as a route out of poverty, give an American face to an economic empowerment tool that has enjoyed great success in developing countries. By becoming their own bosses, they not only provide for their children but also inspire them. Though each of their businesses is unique, all eleven of these women have discovered previously unknown strengths as they've struggled to overcome personal and bureaucratic obstacles. All received important assistance from nonprofit organizations supported by the Ms. Foundation for Women, the pioneer funding entity of microenterprise programs in the United States. Updated with a new epilogue.

4 out of 5 stars Encouraging stories for entrepreneurs.......2004-01-19

So whaddya know, turns out I'm a sucker for inspirational literature after all. This book was sent to me by a friend who's been following my dreams of starting my own business, and I have to say it was extremely encouraging - both the act of his sending it to me and the stories contained herein. Even if you're not coming from a place of poverty or disenfranchisement, each one of these stories has a good nugget of truth in it: the obvious value of hard work and believing in oneself, but also seeing what people go through in the process of applying for a loan with tenuous collateral, or looking to expand an existing business, or taking a second job to secure health coverage. There's something good in each of these stories, and - yep - they're heartwarming. It's a nice collection.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2003-12-09

This book really brings to life the struggles that women entrepreneurs face as they try to turn an idea for a business into a profitable reality. The real-life women whom the authors profile are truly memorable, from Roselyn Spotted Eagle, the Sioux beadworker and quilter who has had an unimaginably hard life, yet doesn't complain, to Yasmina Cadiz, the stylish, edgy creative type in Chicago who you just know will end up being famous some day. The book reads like a novel, even though it contains lots of useful advice about how to get a small business off the ground. I recommend it highly to any woman who dreams of being her own boss one day.

5 out of 5 stars Measuring and Managing Customer Satisfaction.......2000-03-18

This book is what its title says: it is for companies that are ready to go for the gold, the profitabilty associated with satisfied customers who tell others and buy again and again. It is a complete, wholistic approach to customer satisfaction that knocked my socks off. Of course, you will ask customers about their satisfaction. What Sheila Kessler adds to this formula is that you have to have a large radar screen to get the information that will make a difference. Have you talked with customers who have left? Do you know that if you do, they may return? What systems do you have for picking up customer compliments and complaints? Do you act vigorously to let your customers know they have been heard? Do you know how much this approach can affect your bottom line? The book is very user friendly. Easy to read and easy to use. Sheila Kessler shares a wealth of data from the studies she has reviewed. What has worked for others? What does not work? What is most important? She gives examples of approaches that others have found useful. But, for me, what was most important was that she takes a wholistic view at what it means to measure and manage customer satisfaction. Want to turn around your employees so they spend more time focusing on customers and less time protecting their own turf? Use this book as a tool and follow it step by step with your employees, Decide what works for your company and then implement it.You will have a lot of loyal customers thanking you for the opportunity to do more business with you.

3 out of 5 stars FLYS HIGH BUT DOESN'T STICK THE LANDING.......2007-09-27

The title may imply perfection, but this novel, unfortunately, is not perfect. Oh the potential is definitely there, but the result left me wanting a great deal more than I got.

I love the basic premise of a gymnast, Chris, coming back from serious injury with the aid of a new coach, Brian, a coach destined to become his lover. And I love that Chris has an identical twin brother, an obvious shout out to Paul and Morgan Hamm, although Chris' brother is not a gymnast, rather a former tennis player studying to become a doctor.

But the story itself is too slight. Heck, Chris doesn't even actually go to a meet. We simply have to trust Brian that he's the best in the world. Also once the couple starts having sex, which to be fair is well into the book, it seems like they're having it every three pages. That's fine for male/male erotica, of which Michael's has written several volumes, but I felt this story could have been so much more. There is a nice suspenseful episode towards the end of the novel, but I'm afraid it's too little too late.

Frankly, the way this author churns out books, he probably wanted to keep things as simple as possible, not taking on too many additional characters, and an actual gymnastics' meet would have required that.

PERFECT TEN could have been a wonderful and complex gay sports romance, but it fell several points short. Upon completion, the book left me loving the characters, but feeling rather ambivalent about the plot.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Story.......2007-06-29

Good story and plot development. Didn't know anything about the spins or moves but Sean Michael has done his homework and given the reader a very good insight into what makes a good athlete. Gay or straight! Evolving, strong love between Chris & Brian brings the reader along the storyline of the making of a comeback and part 2.

    Book Description

Mike Gauliet could be a world class swimmer if he took care of himself better. He's too good to let go, so his team coach calls in a private trainer, up-and-coming hardass Jessy Turner. Jessy locks Mike down, putting him on a strict regimen of diet and exercise that Mike resents a lot until he finds himself becoming a better swimmer for it. Jessy finds Mike all but irresistible, but he stays away to begin with, making decisions based on what's best for Mike's career. The two of them resist their attraction to each other for as long as they can, but sooner or later they have to give into the heat between them. When things go wrong, though, can they, and their sports careers, survive the strain? CB Potts, author of Tuesday's Rubies, says, "(Sean) Michael is to be commended. Fans of sports smut, such as myself, are sure to be pleased with the mix of athleticism and eroticism, and romance fans will love the emotional heights and depths the couple journey through." Pick up this hot, athletic romance today! And look for Personal Best II, a Going for the Gold novel, on shelves next to Personal Best!

3 out of 5 stars Tough coach and pliant student.......2007-10-17

Jesse is an older tough professional swimming coach, Mike a nineteen year old orphan and a born swimmer. When Jesse takes Mike on full time it turns out to more than just as his trainer. Part of the deal is that Mike moves in to live with Jesse; the two men soon fall in love.

Well written as one expects of Sean Michael, the story really centres around the love affair, with the swimming aspect playing a very poor second. I found this a little disappointing; I would have loved to see the swimming, and all the possibilities that pools and changing rooms could afford, playing a bigger role. The two characters are appealing, Jesse as the tough no nonsense coach, and Mike the slightly naïve and very bubbly youngster. But too much of the story is devoted to the rather repetitive M/M action, and not enough to the plot; even the initial seduction is far too easy. On the other hand if you like lots of hot and occasionally dominant action, then you won't be disappointed.

I purchased this along with the sequel, Personal Best 2; it will be interesting to see how Sean Michael develops the story.

DOUBLE TWIST finds Laura and Patrick gearing up to compete in an ice-dancing championship in Montreal. This time, they expect a medal. Their excitement overpowers the strenuous workouts, until an accident ruins their plans. When Patrick goes down, his knee prevents him from dancing again, until after the competition. Laura sinks into depression, until she thinks of a brilliant plan to stay in the competition.

During normal skating hours at the rink, Laura spies one boy showing off his footwork. He looks like he has all the right moves, and with a little work, she has a new skating partner. Keeping him as a partner is an entirely different matter. Boys tease him about ice-dancing, but Laura finds a way to make it more appealing. Together Laura and Scott work on a hip-hop ice-dancing routine. The uniqueness of their dancing could ultimately blow up in their faces, but they're willing to work like crazy and have a little fun to try something completely new.

This novel is great fun and will be popular with girls looking for more sport books. The book, set in the U.K., is half-Americanized, making the reader wonder exactly where it is located. At the championship, Scott and Laura are announced as the team from the U.K., but it's never revealed beforehand. Words like Mum and soccer make it a little bit hard for the reader to figure out the setting. However, this slight issue did not take away from the enjoyment of the book.

                Book Description

Though the United States emerged from World War II with superpower status and quickly entered a period of economic prosperity, the stresses and contradictions of the Cold War nevertheless cast a shadow over American life. The same period marked the heyday of the western film. Cowboys as Cold Warriors shows that this was no coincidence. It examines many of the significant westerns released between 1946 and 1962, analyzing how they responded to and influenced the cultural climate of the country.

Author Stanley Corkin discusses a dozen films in detail, connecting them to each other and to numerous others. He considers how these cultural productions both embellished the myth of the American frontier and reflected the era in which they were made.

The most significant features of our landscape are often invisible to us. For example: how often have you wondered about the evolution of the gas station? How many gas stations are there in the U.S.? Are gas stations increasing or decreasing in number? What do Bauhaus and feminism have to do with gas station architecture?

Whether or not these questions have kept you awake at night (or been asked of you during job interviews), this delightful hybrid between architectural history, economics, pop-culture studies, and geography will give you unexpected insights into one of the more important components of the American landscape. Illustrated with more than 150 maps, photos, and drawings, and highly recommended.

                Book Description

In the first volume of their celebrated "Gas, Food, Lodging" trilogy, John Jakle and Keith Sculle offer a comprehensive history of the American gas station, exploring every aspect of this roadside icon, including its evolving architectural identity; its place in both the American landscape and popular culture; the corporate decisions that determined its look and location; its metamorphosis into the mini-mart; and its role as the most visible manifestation of one of the world's largest industries. From the quaint curbside filling stations of the 1910s to the novelty designs of the 1920s (when stations were built to resemble English cottages, Greek temples, Dutch windmills, and Spanish missions) to the Bauhaus-inspired stations of the 1930s to today's nationwide chains of brightly lit look-alikes, The Gas Station in America is the definitive book on the subject. Richly illustrated with more than 150 images--postcards of gas stations, vintage ads, maps, and other memorabilia--this book bears witness to an economic and cultural phenomenon that continues to be a defining part of the American experience.

I think that this book really is a great resource to people who are interested in American history and how an industry can evolve over the decades. The information regarding the retail petroleum industry itself was a little bit thin. I would have liked to see how the industry boomed when cars became a necessity to Americans and how the gas station industry handled that. The pictures in the book make the book very likable even to the everyday person picking up the book off of a coffee table. It takes older American's back to their younger days of $.05 gas and younger American's to a time when gas wasn't over $2.00 a gallon. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to a person who is interested in the industry of retail petroleum and the evolution of the gas station we all use!

Do you know when and where the first oil well was found? Did you know that in the early 1900's any shopkeeper with a curb and an idea could have his own commercial gas pump? Do you know what a lubester is? If these answers interest you, as well as the history of the rise of the gas station as we know it, check out The American Gas Station. Michael Witzel takes readers on a hundred fifty year tour of the gas and oil business, from the first gush in Titusville, PA, to the breakup of Standard Oil Company to the advent of self-service stations. Many mechanically impaired individuals such as myself look under the hood of a car and see nothing but the spaghetti of wires, lugs, bolts, belts, and gizmos. The author of this unusual and intriguing novel, which is set at the pump of a gas station, must look at sentences and syntax the same way. Check out the nuts and bolts of his prose: "Turn off the Fellsway up Oak can we make the hill lucky not to burn out motor or transmission four wheels spinning broken chains slapping into the station lot sleep in the garage, rubber-tire beds, fender guards for blankets." If words were wires, I'd hate to see how his car runs. Entirely quirky and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Stylistically gorgeous .......2004-09-04

I read this book in one sitting and found it exceptional. The author's style is unique, although it is a little reminiscent of Henry Green. The picture that is painted is gritty and absolutely true of the working class Boston suburbs that I have known. You should not buy this book if you are allergic to "experimental" literature, that is, literature which disobeys conventions about what sentences must be like and what a narrative must, simplistically, accomplish. You should buy this book if your taste in prose tends toward the lyrical and poetic in style, you aren't afraid to have to think a little, and you want to hear the voice of someone from the underside of the class divide in America. Torra's other novels in the trilogy, _My Ground_ and _Tony Luongo_ are even better.

3 out of 5 stars Lack of plot and punctuation not a hindrance for this book........2000-09-26

I didn't seem to have the same problems with this book as the other reviewers. I found the lack of punctuation and linear narrative very liberating, casting the whole book in the hazy light of memory and hindsight. The fluidity of the prose was in keeping with the flow of reminiscence of a bittersweet time gone past, of captured moments that slip by. Maybe it's just because I've read a lot of Faulkner and the Beat writers that I'm used to this kind of writing style.

The lack of a plot only served to increase this tone for me. When looking at "slice-of-life" stories, plot usually isn't my primary consideration; what compels me is how the protagonist (or the writer) seeks to find meaning in the mundane, the repetitive, the significant and the overwhelming events of an ordinary life...."ordinary" in the sense that it could just as well be yours or mine.

This is not a spectacular book, it is not the best book I've ever read, but it doesn't deserve to be written off as pointless or difficult. It is a glimpse into a time and place that I would not otherwise have ever known, and in terms of its structure, it is fascinating. Again, not a classic, but well worth a place on my bookshelf.

                            1 out of 5 stars punctuation is a problem.......2000-02-14

This book could possibly be very good if it was not for the lack of commas and full stops it makes it near impossible to make sense of the narrative and it becomes tedious having to reread every page especially when the subject matter is so dull if you enjoyed reading this review which contained no punctuation than you may just enjoy this tedious book

1 out of 5 stars Unique setting, difficult read........1999-10-19

Gas Station, a story that could probably take place in anyrural town, is a true slice of the typical average American dream. Itis a story, (well not really) more like a snap-shot of a young adolescent boy who's coming of age. In this Joeseph Torra captures the many thoughts that we all have in life. Your first beer, your first cigarette, how you view yoru parents and the immediate world that surrounds you.

However, the book lacks plot. There is no climax, no intricate story, just a time slice of a young man's life.

The difficulty in this book is its rhythm. I found myself re-reading sections of the book because of the lack of where a sentance starts and where it ends. Without punctuation, you find many thoughts becomming a blur and it takes time to sort them all out into cohesive thoughts to digest.

The myriad of characters had much promise, and I would have liked to see many of their motivations, but they were discussed. Touch for a book that is $11.95

5 out of 5 stars Just About Everything You Need to Know.......2005-08-14

Virtually every company that makes things has to ahve a catalog. It's the thing that tells your customers what you do and gives them the detailed information that they need to make a decision.

Catalogs began with the mail order industry where the technology grew to measure sales return per square inch of paper. Over time, the professionals learned what worked and what didn't. Then when everything was working pretty well, the Internet came along and changed all the rules. All of a sudden space was endless, no more big checks to the printers. Communications was essentially free, no more big checks to the post office. The rules changed because the option to thumb through the catalog was no longer there. Instead sophisticated search and discover techniques needed to be worked out.

Jack Schmid has been in the catalog business, both print and electronic for many years. In this book he passes along dozens, if not hundreds of points. The book covers quite a lot of ground. Much of the book is on the functions that have to be performed whether the catalog is printed, electronic or both. This includs things like product selection, fullfillment, customer service and finance. There is a goodly amount of material on the printed version of the catalog, as these are still required by most companies. There are several points interspersed throughout the book and finally chapters on things like database marketing, the Internet, and more.

This is one of the most all inclusive books available on catalog marketing and includes just about everything there is to know.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate handbook of catalog selling.......2004-07-29

If you want to read only one book on the catalog business, make sure you pick this one.

I've read more than 5 books in English and German on the catalog subject and Schmid's book is in a class of its own.

It promises to cover the entire catalog process, including strategic planning, merchandising, creative, marketing (circulation), fulfillment, testing, and measuring response and ROI. And it delivers on the promise to an extend that I've never seen before. I spend this summer in Cannes, France, and enjoyed Schmid's book in the hot sun. Just couldn't put it aside...

His 11 pages long spreadsheet model in appendix includes everything for a new catalog start-up feasibility study ... and provides insight for the budgeting process to more experienced catalogers. [Why doesn't he provide a downloadable version in Excel on his homepage?]

The only competitor to this book is probably Katie Muldoon's 1995-publication, which is out of print (her home page says that a new book on the strategic aspects of catalogs is forthcoming).

One weakness that all books on cataloging have so far is their unserious treatment of the Internet. Schmid's book is from 2000 and it shows. It doesn't contain solid work on dynamic publishing, which is exploding via the Internet these years. It's not that Schmid doesn't accept that the Internet will be a phenomenal factor, but in this area so much of the catalog processes have been digitized since 2000. Thus, on this promise it doesn't deliver.

I still recommend this book as the best source so far to understanding all the catalog processes and hints to improving the bottom-line.
