Book Description

A timeless classic of advice from father to son. Now with an introduction by James Schlesinger.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Book from 100 Years Ago.......2006-07-29

I read the editorial review from "Publisher's Weekely" and had to respond to their narrow minded critique. I found this to be a very informative and entertaining book, and I found the advice as relative today as it was over 100 years ago. Just because more than a century has passed since the publication of this book, it doesn't mean that principles of right and wrong have changed as well. The examples are obviously dated, but the principles surely are not. I will pass this book on for my son to read in the next few years in the hopes he may learn from it.

4 out of 5 stars a gem.......2005-04-30

The PW reviewer got it wrong. This is a little-known gem, in its way as valuable as that never-outdated masterpiece, Edwin Lefevre's "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator". There are many people who've gone broke working for themselves or having given credit to others because they felt they had to, or who spent the fortune that they hadn't earned yet and never would, who could have used the advice in "Letters from...". It is very much not "the advice that young men always hear", especially now when Daddy can again buy them into the best schools, term papers are bought, credit is something to get as much of as possible and sloughing debt and emerging clean and bright in a new venture is just business. There is an attitude here that is quite foreign to the modern business-school-educated mind (but not to many successful in business), and a form of telling that has its own charm. If only for the swearing done then, and the realistic activities of the son who the letters are addressed to in the story that unfolds as it goes along, it's a fun read. But because the homilies are thickly spread throughout, it's the kind of read to not hog out on in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of common sense per square inch!.......2002-12-04

I have been reading this book (an OLD copy!) once a year since I was a senior in high school, at the behest of my father who was one of the wisest persons I've ever known. The old man exhibits a rare understanding of human nature, and is able to pack more common sense into every square inch than too many of us gain in a lifetime. I have found it to be a great gift for high school or college graduates, for young people trying to find themselves, for some older folks still grappling with some basic issues. A great book for your personal library, and to share!

4 out of 5 stars Good Graduate Book.......2002-06-29

This book is good for the High School Graduate because the simple metaphors and stories make this book clear in a world full of obscur rules and references. I liked this book because it did speak in straight forward terms. An older audience may see this as a dribble of old advice, but to a younger man this is new wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Best Collection of Wisdom.......2000-02-05

My grandfather gave me a 1905 printing of this book and told me that, in his opinion, this was the second best collection of wisdom he'd ever read, next to the Bible. After a reluctant reading, I agree wholeheartedly.

    Book Description

I don't care how much or how little money you make-I want you to understand that there's only one place in the world where you can live a happy life, and that's inside your income. A family that's living beyond its means is simply a business that's losing money, and it's bound to go smash. -from "V: New York, December 8, 189-" Chicago pork magnate John Graham is a thorough success in business... except when it comes to his ne'er-do-well son Pierrepont, who never seems to need the end of his father's no-nonsense advice on being a boss, being a husband, and being a man. This delightful 1904 book-a sequel to Lorimer's 1901 Letters From a Self-Made Merchant to His Son-is ostensibly a work of fiction, taking the form of exasperated letters from Graham to his would-be protégé, but it's still a genuine source of down-home counsel on how to hire family (carefully), how to drink on the job (don't), when to apologize to a wife (always), and more. American journalist GEORGE HORACE LORIMER (1867-1937) was editor in chief of the Saturday Evening Post from 1899 to 1936, leading the magazine to the heights of its popularity. He is also the author of False Gods (1906).

"When women in sports achieve a victory it's a celebration for everyone," observes Lessa in her introductory essay to Women Who Win. Gathering 22 superb women athletes from a wide spectrum of arenas, the roster includes Tara Lipinksi (figure skating), Teresa Edwards (basketball), Julie Foudy (soccer), Missy Giove (mountain biking), Julie Krone (horse racing), Lisa Fernandez (softball), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (track and field), and Picabo Street (skiing). Lessa allows these woman champions room to tell their own stories in their own words: who they are, what they've faced, how they've overcome, and what motivates them. All speak eloquently about what it means to be a woman in what remains at the highest levels a traditionally male playpen. The words are stirring, and so are the stunning photographs that accompany them in this big-format presentation. --Jeff Silverman

                    Book Description

Since the twenty-fifth anniversary of Title IX in 1997, women athletes have captured the public's attention more than ever. This important book celebrates the stories of courage, challenge, fear and pride of these pioneering women, from Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Peggy Flemming to basketball powerhouse Teresa Edwards. The riveting, deeply personal experiences of the women protrayed in this book illustrate the newfound celebrated status of the female athlete.Profiles of the twenty five remarkable sportswomen get to the heart of their committment and tell stories not usually covered by sports writers. Some have demostrated acts of physical heroism, like skiier Picabo Steet, who won an Olympic gold medal despite crippling injuries. Others have struggled with moral commitment, like Julie Foudy, who refused to allow a soccer-ball manufacturer to use her name on their ball until they stopped employing underage workers at their plant in Pakistan. And all have overcome a history of discrimination, like tennis legend Billie Jean King, a crusader for women's rights who paved the way for a generation of female athletes by defeating Bobby Riggs twenty-five years ago.A unique look at the athletes who have redefined the parameters of sports for women, this book about great role models is sure to inspire readers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Very well-written and great interviews!.......1999-05-14

"Women who Win" is a great book and very inspirational! It teaches, esspecially young athletes, the importance of perseverance. The athletes tell of their hardships and how they became sucessful which is very motivational. It really taught me about the importance of perseverance and how much of a role model one must be.

                    5 out of 5 stars Amazing........1998-12-24

A wonder full book for all ages. Inspiring photos of Aimme Mullins, whos legs were amputated at a young age, Teresa Edwards and more, make you want to read on this wonderfully illustrated book. Ms.Lessa captures the true nature of these women. You ususally don't see Tara Lipinski up close, not skating on the ice; but Ms. Lessa made sure her photos were unique. I am 12 years old and I thoroughly enjoyed the writing, the way the author portays the lives of these women is 'fabu' BOTTOM LINE: This book is excellent- A MUST HAVE FOR ASPIRING ATHLETES! :)

                            Book Description

Out of New York City in the early '70s emerged a series of black and white horror comics titled Nightmare, Psycho and Scream. Lasting only several years, these comics established themselves as something wholly unique thanks to the editorship of Archaic Alan Hewetson, whose dark and perverse in-house style became known as "the Horror-Mood". With many enduring characters and stories, Skywald! continues to stand the ravages of time more than a quarter of a century later. Long overdue, this book is the first to chronicle the amazing publishing house, its influence, and its top writers and artists. Told by Archaic Al himself and other Horror-Mood bullpenners, with plenty of anecdotes and features, Skywald! also reproduces in their entirety some of the best stories.

4 out of 5 stars Wordy comic book writer who found inspiration in the works of Poe & Lovecraft.......2007-05-17

The Complete Illustrated History of the Skywald Horror-Mood is a fascinating book, mostly a collection of interviews with the surviving Skywald principals, which chronicles Alan Hewetson's experiences as the editor and chief writer of three black & white horror comic magazines put out by Skywald in the early `70s. There was a lot of competition in the field then, from Warren, Eerie and even Marvel, and Skywald was known as the bottom of the barrel. They paid the lowest rates and many of the stories were actually written by Hewetson himself under a variety of pseudonyms. He was a wordy comic book writer who found inspiration in the works of Poe and Lovecraft. Many of the stories were extremely gory and the plots were utterly mad. The art was often exceptional, though, and "Archaic Al" established a unique persona for the line. This is a fun if self-serving book illustrated with tons of photographs, unpublished art and 19 original stories from the magazines. Particularly interesting is the section on Dr. Fredric Wertham, author of the notorious Seduction of the Innocent, with whom Hewetson struck up a tenuous friendship in the late `60s.

3 out of 5 stars If you remember Skywald, it's a nice book.......2006-07-16

Skywald in the 70s was an imitator of the lowbrow but moderately successful B&W Warren comics magazines. I bought many horror comics way back then, so I had some Skywalds. This book is a nostalgic reminder of magazines long lost, just enough to remind the reader of what they once were. They weren't much, really.

If you're young and grew up in the 80s or 90s, you probably won't get much from this volume. If you were one of the few who were alive and buying comics in the 1970s, you may get a little kick from this book.

                            5 out of 5 stars excellent read.......2005-09-29

I came across a stack of used skywald magazines when I was about 14. Being a fan of Warren publications and horror comics in general, I immediately snatched them up! I wasn't disappointed. The quality of these publications was much darker and more sophisticated than any of the type that I had read before. Anyway, throughout the years I would occaisionally pick up a used Skywald, although they rarely surfaced. The Headpress book is a pleasure, with plenty of reprinted stories, lots of art, and many great articles. This is a serious and exhaustive study of a truly innovative addition to the world of horror fiction. You will love it if you enjoy the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Great if you like Skywald, otherwise..........2005-05-18

Let me start by saying that the presentation of this book is beautiful: sturdily bound, printed on thick, glossy paper and with an easy to read, clean layout. I am a huge fan of B&W horror comic magazines from the 60s/70s, but Skywald was never my cup of tea. I have around 10 original issues of Scream, Psycho and Nightmare, and never understood their charm compared to Warren's Creepy or even (gasp!) the absurdly awful yet always entertaining Eerie Publications line-up (as exemplified by Weird). My problem with Skywald's mags is they are just too "fanboy" or "hippyish" for lack of a better word... weird for the sake of being weird, arty for the sake of being arty, with pseudo-intellectual nonsense masquerading as "high brow" horror for 12 year olds. The stories (and sometimes the wild art) come across like drug-induced, incoherant underground comix but with just a bit more polish and professionalism to ensure they could stand a chance to compete with Warren's books. The artwork is by and large far better than I remembered it, though still no Corben or Wrightson (as seen in the Warren mags of the time). Many Horror-Mood stories (and "Archaic" Al Hewetson's in particular) either make little sense, are either painfully ridiculous or overly serious, and/or worst of all, fail to deliver a credible climax. Shoddy serial characters (like The Heap and the Human Gargoyles) are used to the detriment of the entire line, just as they were in Warren's ill-fated Eerie. This book is supposed to collect the "best" of the Skywald Horror-Mood tales (as chosen by the Skywald staff interviewed), but I haven't read a good one yet (and I'm still wading through them at the time I write this review -- frankly, I only remember two or three stories that were memorable from the ten issues I managed to collect in the mid-90s, having missed them as a child). Supposed classics such as "I, Slime", "Cannibal Were-Wolf" and "Tale of Horror" all fall flat; the first two due to a lack of character development and requisite building of suspense, and the latter because an otherwise excellent WW2 tale's "shocking" epilogue ranks as one of the most unbelievably stupid ever written. "Tale of Horror" would have been much better had it stayed within the realm of believability, ending with the messenger being killed and the orders from Hitler being revealed to be pure fiction (moving non-existent Wermacht or SS divisions rather than werewolves)... of course, then it wouldn't really have been a "tale of horror" for their 12 year old audience and been better suited for Warren's (by then defunct) Blazing Combat. Most stories seemed rushed and could have used an extra two to four pages each. Due to the excellent presentation and exhaustively researched detail that went into this volume, I give this book four stars, but the book did nothing to change my opinion about Skywald and the Horror-Mood. I guess I just don't "get" Skywald at all, and never will. At least I still have my nearly complete run of Creepy to keep me company!

5 out of 5 stars appreciation of influential horror comics publisher.......2005-03-01

Alan Hewetson was the head of the publisher Skywald putting out horror-fantasy comics for a few years in the early 1970s. He died before the publication of this review of his short-lived but influential publishing company. Skywald's influence is seen today especially in the content and special effects in popular horror films. It's also seen, though not so clearly or directly, in how moods of fear and dread are created in many mainstream movies. Never straying from Hewetson's keen interest in exploring illustration for the horror genre, the Skywald periodicals had a lasting appeal only to its dyed-in-the-wool fans. For them, the Skywald comics with sensationalistic, macabre, imaginative illustrations developed what became known as its distinctive "horror-mood." This review of the important publisher in the history of this genre contains articles on the horror-genre style of writing, its art, particular themes, interviews with Hewetson, and memoirs of him and Skywald. Alternating with these are 19 original illustrated stories effectively evoking Skywald's distinctive "horror-mood" and demonstrating its range of comic art. For fans of the horror genre and students of this vein of popular culture, the book "stands as a time capsule for an independent publishing house that had a true visionary [i. e., Alan Hewetson] at the reins."

This is more of a GM style book there are several factors in this that the average player character would not understand or be able to use properly, having your charicter drive a car player, gm rolling to see if the car survives the player driving it plus. People seem to care about if it is fast or pretty. but actual design of a vehicle require a bit of planning. If you buy this buuk you will need to take plenty of notes while you are designing it will make it easieer to use, and if you are like me a calculator to check your math. And You thought that you would never use algebra.

                            1 out of 5 stars *Horrible* book!.......2000-09-23

This is by far the worst GURPS book I've ever seen. The most obvious problem is that the book isn't just poorly organized- it's not organized at all. It begins with what I initially assumed was an overview and introduction to the (rather complex) design process, making occasional references to formulae but describing most steps in only general terms. Well, it turns out that this is the *only* place that the entire process is documented, and (despite leaving many complex steps completely undefined, without even a chapter reference) it is the only place in the book that some important formulae appear (if you missed the paragraph on access spaces, you'll never read another word about the fact that all your numbers are now off by a factor of two or more). If you want to design a vehicle, the only way to get it right is to read the entire book from cover to cover and hope you remember it all.

Even more fundamental than the book's lack of organization is the utter ludicrousy of the design process itself. The "simple step-by-step process" is set up in about the most awkward way imaginable: first pick everything you want in the vehicle, then decide what kind of body you want the vehicle to have, then add more components, then determine structural characteristics, then layer on armor, then compute statistics. This system is completely backwards for players who wish to design vehicles for a particular purpose. i.e. Suppose you want to build a plane which can travel at mach 2. The first thing you have to do is decide how powerful an engine you want. How on earth are you supposed to know that *first*? Working backwards through the dozens of equations from drag to surface area to volume (which of course is largely determined by engine size itself) is nearly impossible; any attempt at building a vehicle with even vague performance parameters will take several attempts and some very good guesswork.

Most disappointing of all, however, is the fact that even with the ridiculous detail and complexity required to build a vehicle, the performance characteristics are computed using absurd and arbitrary rules with no relation to reality, leading one to wonder what the point of all that trouble really was. Multihull sailboats are defined as being much heavier and having much less usable space per volume than monohulls (opposite of reality), aeordynamics have no affect at all on the handling of high speed cars or fuel efficiency, and little effect on speed (a cardboard box with a hefty engine can outperform a formula one car), a plane's vertical speed is completely independent of its weight (if it can fly at all it can climb as steeply as you like), and jet engines take twice as much space if installed in an aircraft's body as if they were installed in wing-mounted pods (again that sneaky access space rule). There is no uniformity between any two rules and everything is a special case; one wonders if this can actually be termed a "system" at all, or if it's really just a collection of ad hoc solutions to one-time problems. Any GM who wants to use this book will have to make so many changes just to make it playable that he might as well design his own rules; this ruleset's only links to reality are the area=volume^(2/3), top speed=(thrust/surface area)^1/2 formulae available from any physics book.

The only section of the book which seems at all useful is the 3-page note on advanced maneuvering for vehicles (which of course relies on just a single simple statistic almost entirely independent of the painstakingly complex design of the vehicle); this might be appropriate for a magazine article but is hardly the basis for a sourcebook.

All in all, any gaming group is much better off agreeing on their own vehicle rules than wasting time trying to understand and then repair this brain-damaged system.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most well--designed RPG module ever.......2000-05-07

Most roleplayers fall into one of two categories: The ones that prefer the dynamics of the game (whether the action, the roleplaying or the puzzlesolving) and the tinkerers that spend hours reading and contemplating RPG modules in the way some sane people read prose.

This module is not for the roleplayers of the first category. Building your first vehicles takes a looong time. But after a while you realize that these incredibly well-thought through rules are to a very high degree compatible with other GURPS rules such as those found in Ultra-tech and Robots, and you realize you can actually build that piece of equipment you need for the next scenario (whether you're a GM or player) with a minimum of fuzz.

If you like this kind of RPG engineering, this is probably the module for you. Guaranteed hours of fun and entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Complex, Excellent for that core vehichle/starship........2000-01-13

I love complex, realistic systems. I wouldn't dare use this book in a real rpg campaign unless the vehicle had a role as important as the mellenium falcon in star wars or the enterprise in star trek. But for that key vehicle or starship (when used with GURPs Space), this books rocks. It gives you as much as realism as possible with the physics stuff washed down to 7th-9th grade math level (Full arithmitic with exponents, simple geometry, basic algebraic equations)

                            2 out of 5 stars Ouch!.......1999-12-20

This book is very thorough, very detailed, and massive overkill for any rational use. I just designed my first vehicle with it, and it took me most of a hour and I'm pretty sure I have missed a lot of the rules.

For example: You are going through the vehicle design checklist, and you come to the step where you have to buy a powerplant (page 36). They are rated in KW of energy. How many KW do you need? It doesn't say. Searching the book, I find a formula to estimate in a sidebar on page 22, but the heading claims it is "optional" so I assume there is some other rule somewhere else. Page 61 has tables to calculate "Thrust factor" and "power factor," but does not explain why you would want to know these numbers.

If you enjoy idling away the hours designing vehicles, this book is probably for you. If you want to quickly design some vehicles for a campaign, you are going to be frustrated.
