Great book.......2007-09-30
The book is clearly satire, and definitely exaggerates a bit, but it still gives you a sense of the Wall Street culture, where people are extremely wealthy but also extremely unrefined (scarfing greasy cheeseburgers while making millions). Very funny. Also extremely informative on topics such as the rise of mortgage bonds and junk bonds as financial tools. The book gives a great portrayal of the genius of the people behind these financial innovations. In fact, its portrayal of people in general is very funny and memorable. One final upside: there are some books, where, if you don't read them for about a week, you have no clue what's going on anymore. This is not one of those. There are relatively few people to keep track of, and they are described so well that you can't forget them.
I would DEFINITELY recommend this book. Funny and informative, a window onto a strange culture known as Wall Street.
Mildly Amusing.......2007-08-28
Michael Lewis' inside look at the heady days of Salomon Brothers during the 1980s and the decay that followed is a mildly amusing, albeit disjointed narrative with little new information. It is funny in parts and some of the character sketches make you pause but overall a strictly average book.
Read "Moneyball" or "The Blind Side" Before This.......2007-07-25
Long before "Moneyball" and "The Blind Side," Michael Lewis wrote "Liar's Poker." It is a short, entertaining story about Salomon Brothers during the highs and lows of the 80's. Salomon created the mortgage bond market. And like many first movers, it exploited its advantage for years. Sellers and buyers barely understood the market. No one understood the bonds' valuations. The only sure thing was that Salomon was going to make money. But ungodly profits enticed competition, and competitors poached Salomon's best traders. Even worse, bond underwriters thought they were more clever each day and created more complicated trading vehicles. Eventually, the market crashed because of excessive supply, complexity, and hubris. In some ways, it parallels what we see with hedge funds today.
Although the book is a simple and entertaining story, it lacks much of the rigorous analytics and insights that are present in Lewis's more recent books. His younger rhetoric is less mature and prone to hyperbole. He desperately tries to hide his arrogance (something you don't see in his later writing). If you're looking for a quick read during a plane ride, then this is a decent story. If you've heard favorable things about Michael Lewis and you want to read one of his books, buy "Moneyball" or "The Blind Side" before "Liar's Poker."
Interesting but not exceptional.......2007-06-27
It provides a good picture of the Wall Street during the 80's but it is sometimes tiring when describing the personality of some characters.

Excellent Explanation of Derivatives.......2007-10-22
This book is well written, and explains how derivatives work, and how they are traded. The writer has an excellent sense of humor, and clarifies some difficult to understand concepts. This book helps to explain a lot of the problems we've seen in financial markets in the past years, and doesn't make you feel any better about the future of financial markets.
The starting point to the world of derivatives.......2007-09-22
"Knowns and unknowns in the dazzling world of derivatives" great subtitle and the author really delivers. I love books on finance. Possibly stemming from being dropped on my head as a child. Some are pretty brutal to read but this one is as entertaining as it is educational.
I was familiar with some derivatives like futures contracts and options, before reading this book. Now derivatives like CDO (Collateralized Debt Obligations), CCO (Commodity Collateralized Obligations), currency swaps, interest rate swaps, or even inverse floaters make sense to me. Obviously I am far from being an expert on any of these, but after reading this book I can now understand why Warren Buffet called derivatives "Financial Weapons of Mass Destruction".
The author does a great job educating you in story-like fashion. The book told of numerous investors that ended up getting screwed by some pretty good salespeople at different dealer firms. Buyer beware comes to mind time and time again as I read these episodes. The treasurer of Orange County California got in way over his head because he was making a ton of money. Which he attributed to his financial wisdom. Then when interest rates went against him and his county lost 1.5 billion dollars he changed his tune saying he had some kind of brain defect and could not understand numbers. That would have been handy for the voters of Orange County to know BEFORE they elected him to office.
I guess there are many reasons to use derivatives like avoiding taxes, moving risk from highly regulated areas to less regulated areas, using loans as collateral for even bigger loans, or repackaging bad credit in a way that transfers the risk to someone else. The more I learn, the more I am amazed that supposedly very intelligent people see these as a great way to make money. It just goes to show that most people invest in things they do not understand.
I read an article by the author, Satyajit Das today. In the article he mentioned that "1 dollar supports 20-30 dollars worth of loans" and that the derivatives market at the moment is valued at 485 trillion dollars, or to make that a little more understandable, 8 times the global gross domestic product. 8 times the GDP of the entire planet. Wow.
This book is a great introduction to the world of derivatives and I highly recommend it.
A little too cynical.......2007-09-22
This book offers a great amount of information and is very interesting. Being a derivatives trader myself, it does however strike me as just a tad too cynical.
Enter the World of Derivatives.......2007-05-02
An insight to the somewhat strange world of derivatives trading, the greed, the risk and the people. I cant say I agree with every word of Satyajit, but it is a real page-turner, the kind of book you finish in a day.
"Derivatives dont kill people, people kill people"
An Entertaining and Educational Reading Experience.......2007-04-12
I really enjoyed reading the book Traders, Guns, and Money: Knowns and Unknowns in the Dazzling World of Derivatives by Satyajit Das. It is an interesting book in that it is a fictionalized autobiography of Das. As the book outlines the author's professional life in finance, it describes how he got involved in financial derivatives. The primary purpose of the book is to give a primer on derivatives, how they were created, how they are used, their benefits, and their dangers. The author's use of humor along with the hilarious vignettes of his finance associates (Nero, Clem/Crem, Adewiko, Budi, etc.) and funny anecdotes from his career made the book fun to read.
The book really helped explain what exactly derivatives are (giving me a good review of some of what I was taught in college) and how they are used today. I also appreciated the in-depth analysis of several well-known instances where derivatives were used by investors and companies which really helped to demonstrate their application in the real world as well as the oftentimes hidden dangers of using these financial tools. I found his discussion of the currency swap done by the Walt Disney Company in the 1980's to be of particular interest to me. Despite the fact that I previously read the HBS case study during a Derivatives and Risk Management course which I took as a student at Harvard, Das's explanation of the incident really gave me an even better understanding of how exactly the transaction was structured and how it eventually went wrong. His explanation of why Disney's financial advisors made the deal so complex was also amusing. (You will have to read the book to find out.)
Moreover, Satyajit Das really underscored the complex nature of derivatives and their use in either speculative bets or in hedges. Previously, I had considered these financial tools as an efficient and safe way to hedge. However, the author points out that there are significant risks even when they are only utilized as a hedge.
Hence, I really enjoyed this entertaining and informative book. The author explains complex concepts in a clear, readily understandable, and comical way. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn more about financial derivatives or the world of finance in general and who does not mind being entertained at the same time.
Thank you for your time.

The fundamental and strategic interests of Germany and the United States in controlling oil routes and key areas of the world are illuminated in this translation. Domination of Russia and China, the bombing of Yugoslavia, and a NATO-sanctioned war for control of the Balkans are speculated about and discussed as long-term goals of the so-called Great Powers. The media and its faulty coverage of similar events in the past is examined, giving the reader the tools necessary to weed through the barrage of organized disinformation and avoid manipulation by the media.

Customer Reviews:
What You Need to Know. .......2007-09-29
This is a concise encyclopedia of the rules for poker. The Official Rules will particularly appeal to novices as it explains the nature of the cardroom, the equipment integral to the game, and hand rankings. Much of it is based on Robert's (Bob Ciaffone's) Rules of Poker and is elaborated upon by the author. It provides an introduction to the game as well by experienced player, Kelli Mix. The various styles of games are also discussed: limit, spread limit, no limit, and pot limit. The text covers just about everything including seven card stud high low and deuce-to-seven high low. The explanation of tournament rules is valuable because, as those of us who watch HSP already know, tournaments and cash games are entirely different animals. It even tells you what should be done with the "odd chip" in casino games. I appreciated the definition of "kill pots" and wish I would have read it before I began playing in kill limit games online, lol. This is definitely something I could have really used back in 2004 when I first began learning about the game.
Publisher's insight.......2007-09-21
Game Day highly recommends this book as the standard poker book for use during all types of poker games. This book is especially helpful to players in home games of poker, where it is important to have a way to resolve rules disputes quickly and amicably.
We at Game Day saw that there was something missing in the current field of poker books: a standard poker rule book. Before we published the Official Rules of Poker, the only authorities on the rules of poker was Scarne and Hoyle, which were written in the Nineteenth Century. The game has changed, especially in the last ten years, and we realized that it was important to have a Twenty-First Century rule book.
When we put out the word that we were looking for an editor and for such a book, Kelli Mix came forward. Ms. Mix, or "Poker Mom" as she is known at the poker table, eagerly took up the challenge of gathering and writing the rules to suit the modern game of poker. This turned out to be a gargantuan task. Ms. Mix researched each rule, making sure that they were found in at least five independent sources. Mix turned out to be a wonderful choice as editor and author of the Game Day Poker Almanac Official Rules of Poker.
Mix is a professional poker player. She is still under most poker players radar, but she is quietly climbing the ranks of tournament poker players (she finished 11th in the 2007 World Series of Poker Texas Hold 'Em Women's tournament in a field of more than 1,200 players). However, she is more likely to be found at cash games, playing high stakes.
The Official Rules of Poker includes all the rules of poker, from the most basic hand rankings to the most obscure tournament rules.
Contents:
1: Elements of Poker. This chapter covers the most basic rules of poker, and also describes the way poker is played in casino card rooms. Mix wrote these rules in a way that makes them easy to use while playing a game.
2: Professional Poker Rules. These rules cover more of mechanical means of acting in a poker game, giving the finer definitions of what constitutes a raise, a call or a fold. They also discuss the penalties of rules infractions. There are four parts to this chapter.
a) Robert's Rules of Poker. These rules were written by professional poker player and authority, Bob Ciaffone, as a standard set of rules of cash games in casino card rooms. While local laws may require changes to these rules, and some casinos use their own rules, these rules are often cited as the official set of rules in professional play.
b) Robert's Rules of Poker for Private Games: This is Ciaffone's "Robert's Rules of Poker" which he adopted to home games where no impartial dealer or floorperson is present.
c) Poker Tournament Director's Association Rules (TDA Rules). Each year, the Professional Poker Tournament Directors Association updates its rules, which most casinos and poker leagues use as their official rule book in tournament play. Tournament rules add a new layer of rules to poker, as tournaments are about eliminating players, not about accumulating money.
d) World Series of Poker Rules: The World Series of Poker is considered the premier poker tournament event. Due to its sheer size and commercialism, the rules for WSOP tournaments are different than TDA rules. Many poker leagues use WSOP rules instead of TDA rules, as the WSOP rules are more popular among those who learned poker from television.
3: Poker Etiquette. There are types of behavior frowned upon in poker games, due to the fact that poker is a highly competitive game and may involve large sums of money. In some games of poker, violating etiquette may result in ejection from the game.
4: Variant Poker Games. Includes 69 different versions of poker, including 5-Card Draw, 5-Card Stud, Cincinnati, Chicago, Baseball, Anaconda, Mexican Stud, Chinese Poker, Iron Cross, Guts, English Stud, Kansas City Lowball, California Lowball, Pineapple,Spit, Three-Card Draw, and the ever-hilarious Indian Poker. Also includes rules for declaring wild cards and using jokers. WhIle professional poker players and casino card rooms will never play most of these games, home games are notorious for playing "dealer's choice" where the dealer chooses which of the many variations of poker will be played that hand. (Note: Mix and I had a really good time finding out about all of these games.)
5: Glossary. Again, Mix was very thorough in her research. Poker terminology is highly colorful and is a lingo all its own. from the Nuts to the Fish. Mix used multiple sources, as there are many local poker terms and terms used that do not last more than a few months. She excludes popular names for two-card Texas Hold 'Em hands, purposefully, although we plan to have a separate glossary for hand names in future editions. Still, this is one of the most complete glossaries I have seen in a poker book anywhere.
6. Index: Okay, I did the index. I believe that indexes should be thorough, and so I did my best to make the index easy to use in the heat of play. Still, this was a fairly easy index to create, as Mix's presentation of the rules and her organization of the material was straightforward, allowing me to easily pick out the rules.
The Official Rules of Poker has been wonderfully received. Professional poker dealers have been clamoring to get this edition. When we released the book at the WSOP 2007 in Las Vegas, the WSOP dealers practically knocked me over trying to get their own copy.
Thank you for considering The Game Day Poker Almanac Official Rules of Poker. I personally hope you will find it to be of great use, and that the book will provide you with years of fun--and fair--poker.

Book Description
Running the survival course was supposed to be fun and exciting, but Andrea Wendt got more than she'd bargained for.
Now she's on the run and it seems everyone wants her. . .the police, "Lurch" and his goons, and her late date's friends, as well.
Ian Chandler seems determined to be her knight in shining armor. The problem is, he's a little rough around the edges. . .well, a lot, and hardly knightly. Although he does manage to get them out of some pretty tight spots, her cat does NOT trust him and she's not certain she should either.
Rating: This book contains graphic love scenes, violence and adult language that some readers may find offensive. While it is a fast paced suspense, it has been written in the tradition of the movie Bird on a Wire, to amuse, not frighten.

While kicking a ball through the dusty streets of his Brazilian hometown, young Edson Arantes do Nascimento was given the nickname Pelé so casually that no one remembers its meaning. Today, the name is famous worldwide as belonging to history’s greatest soccer player. Here, in Pelé’s own words, is his incredible life story: his five goals in the last two games of the 1958 World Cup at the tender age of 17, his glory years with his Brazilian club FC Santos, his role in four World Cup tournaments, his comeback as a member of the storied New York Cosmos, and his lifelong role as goodwill ambassador for the world’s favorite sport.

Beginning with an evocative account of David Sheperd’s North Devon childhood, this book covers his entire cricket career, beginning with playing for Devon in the minor Counties League before joining Gloucester in 1965. He retired in 1979 and became an umpire the following year. His time as an umpire has seen cricket become dominated by money, the introduction of floodlit games and of the controversial electronic "third umpire," video evidence, and world-wide match fixing scandals. The book contains informed opinions on all these aspects of cricket past, present, and future, as well as a wealth of fascinating and amusing anecdotes from a man who has stayed at the center of the game for nearly 40 years, never losing his love of the game or his sense of humor.

A personable memoir from a legend........1998-12-14
Most who have heard of Yakima Canutt know him as the greatest Hollywood stuntman ever, but as this book shows, "Yak" was a whole lot more. He led an exciting life, first as a bronc-riding rodeo star, then to Hollywood to stunt and act in the silent westerns. As he says, he didn't have the voice to pull off dialogue when the "talkies" came in, so he moved to stunting. He describes in great detail all the innovations he came up with as a stuntman and 2nd unit director. He gives vivid background into the many epics he was part of, including "Stagecoach" "Ivanhoe" "Ben Hur" and "Where Eagles Dare." He pulls no punches in his descriptions of his relationships with the Hollywood crowd, especially on how difficult John Ford could be if you were perceived to have stood up to him. All in all this is a crackling good yarn, and best of all it is true.

A must-have for tobacco card enthuiasts!!.......2004-11-25
This comprehensive and superbly organized work is richly supplemented with numerous color and B/W photographs. A brief and informative history about various tobacco products/inserts and manufactures is provided. The book is organized principally into two units: N-series for 19th century cards (N1-N694) and T-series for 20th century cards (T1-T177). Each entry includes a brief description of the set and card appearance (front and back). The overwhelming majority of entries include an actual size photograph of a representative card (front and back) and a list of all cards in the set. Comments pertaining to card variations and prices are useful. The edge of each page is labeled with the set number to aid with rapid location of descriptions and card images. The work is peppered throughout with short vignettes and essays (published previously in various trade journals) by Dr. Terry Mitchell about specific sets or card themes. Although this is a soft cover book, the pages are printed on high grade gloss stock paper that tolerates repeated handling. Suprisingly, the book is neither overwhelming or boorish in its presentation. The brief descriptions and inclusion of images for virtually every set are effective strategies and make the book exceptionally user-friendly. No other work to date has done such a masterful job at capturing the variety of subjects, visual appeal, and historical allure of tobacco cards. This book is a must-have item for novice collectors and enthusiasts.
Beautifully done; Not complete for all collectors.......1999-12-10
A beautifully executed publication, however as a collector of Victorian Trade Cards, I was greatly dissapointed NOT to find ANY of the cards in my collection listed. I would have expected at least ONE to have been referred to, but the items in the book are mostly geared to the collector of tobacco insert cards. If this is your thing, this is your book. Forget it if you are more geared to Tradecard collecting
Informative Book about the History of Tobacco Cards.......1999-03-28
The book is great historical lesson. Reading about the history of the Tobacco cards has been very informative. The writers have dedicated many hours to thorough research of this topic.
Well done reference guide to tobacco cards even for a novice.......1999-03-21
Colorful and interesting pictures provide an easy to use reference guide. The text is clear and concise with indepth information on value and various other aspects of collecting. I would highly recommend this book for serious collectors, antique dealers and those interested this aspect of American history.
Book Description
I am certain of victory over Euwe, said World Champion Alekhine in 1935, and he was hardly the only one to underestimate the Dutchmans chances. Euwes win came as a shock. This magnificent book, filling a gap in the literature of chess, shows that Euwes world title was the result of his iron will, his methodical drive and his energetic handling of all aspects of the game. Max Euwe has been called a genius of order and the chess logician. He wrote more than 70 books, many of which are still in print today. By bringing his world title under the aegis of the world chess federation FIDE he profoundly changed the history of chess in the twentieth century. It was Euwes diplomatic determination as President of FIDE that saved the Match of the Century in 1972 between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. Alexander Mnninghoff tells the unforgettable tale of the fifth World Champion. His gripping story is illuminated by numerous photos and fifty games with the original annotations of Max Euwe.
Customer Reviews:
Gotta love Max.......2002-02-21
Max Euwe was one of the finest players ever to come to the game of chess. He was also a living proof that one could indeed be a World Champion of the game without being an egotistical prime-donna. For lovers of the game and its history this is a fascinating read.
Book Description
Stung by corporate scandals, many companies have begun integrating terms like sustainable business, conscious capitalism, and corporate citizenship into their annual reports. Is it mere greenwashing or are businesses today really mending their ways? Can corporate social responsibility become the new gold standard in business? In Cause for Success, Christine Arena finds reasons to be optimistic while she examines new business paradigms for doing good and translating that good into profit. From Hewlett-Packard to British Petroleum to Stonyfield Farm and the Grameen Bank, the book profiles two case-study companies per chapter, exploring radical ideas about why ethics-driven companies are today's business trendsetters, how standing up for social justice garners competitive advantage, the bottom-line benefits of serving the world's poor, the potential business rewards of philanthropic partnerships, as well as how some of the worst corporate citizens have become some of the best.
Customer Reviews:
Cause for Success is Nautilus 2005 Award Winner!.......2005-06-09
Cause for Success recently won FIRST place for "Best Business Book" at the Nautilus 2005 Awards ceremony that honored books that contribute significantly to conscious living and positive social change.
According to the editors at Marilyn McGuire & Associates, Inc., the company that hosted the awards: "There is hardly a wasted word in this succinct homage to ten corporate exemplars who prove that "conscious business" is not an oxymoron. These high-purpose companies are changing the face - and the principles - of standard business practice with a diversity of commitments to ethics, partnership, economic justice, environmental wisdom, and service to a greater good. In a world of rampant corporate malfeasance, it's heartening to know that companies with a soul do exist, and are thriving because of it."
Inspiring book and valuable resource.......2005-04-07
As a corporate social responsibility professional, I am always reading to expand my CSR tool belt. "Cause for Success" proudly joins my list of "must read". In her book, Ms. Arena provides specific examples of the strong business case and social need for corporate citizenship. Each case study includes valuable reflections from business executives, and measured outcomes of the organizations program. While the entire book is worth reading, Ms. Arena also provides several boxes in each case study that highlight program components and quotes that are extremely useful for future reference. For me, it is a great tool that will assit me in presenting the case for CSR initiatives in an enterprise. Thank you Ms. Arena.
People who have read the book and commented.......2005-03-25
"Cause for Success presents fascinating insights into a new paradigm for business success in the twenty-first century. It shows how a leading set of "high-purpose" companies moved beyond charitable giving and used constructive social engagement as the central means of improving their performance in the marketplace."
- Bradley Abelow, Global Head of Operations, Goldman Sachs
"At a time when business confidence is depleted and cynicism about corporate conduct rampant, Christine Arena raises our sights and expectations. She reminds us that the companies which seek to make both a difference and a profit are the same ones that attract the most gifted, committed and ambitious people. The cycle of virtue she describes is rooted in real case studies, not wishful thinking. Cause for Success is a cause for cerebration as well as celebration."
- Richard D. Parsons, Chairman and CEO, Time Warner
"I loved this book. It will help all leaders redefine success in broader, longer-term ways previously overlooked in traditional business analysis."
- Jonathan S. Lavine, Managing Director, Bain Capital
"The way that businesses are run has a profound impact on the lives of pretty well everyone in the world, including those in the poorest countries. Christine Arena's book shows through the use of inspirational examples that companies and their leaders can establish a powerful new role for business in society. An important call to arms for all business executives to recognize the vital responsibility they have in this world."
- Philip Rowley, President, AOL Europe
"Cause for Success demonstrates the power of innovation and leadership. CEOs that recognize the true costs to communities and the planet of unfair or unsafe business practices, and who therefore commit themselves to a better way, have actually built highly profitable and widely respected companies. By examining several well known and widely regarded examples, the author effectively argues that it is in fact the commitment to do the right thing that has differentiated these companies and driven their success."
- Amy Domini, President, the Domini Social Equity Fund
"In the face of mounting evidence of a world in disequilibrium, the compelling stories in Cause for Success inspire hope. They are stories of visionary leaders who are "redefining normal" in the business world, creating and nurturing companies that serve society. They remind us that it really is within our power to walk more lightly on this Earth."
- Liz Dowdeswell, President, Nuclear Waste Management Organization
"When you Google "success" the first hit should be Cause for Success! This is a rare book: interesting leaders, packed with useful knowledge, and well written and edited. Read it. Keep it close."
- John O'Neil, President, The Center for Leadership Renewal; and Author, The Paradox of Success
"An inspiring, compelling and highly readable set of stories about courageous corporate executives who have demonstrated beyond any doubt that social responsibility and a commitment to sustainability not only make the world a better place but also drive a better bottom line. This is a book that makes you excited about the powerfully positive role that corporate America is capable of playing in these perilous times."
- Tony Schwartz, Bestselling Author, What Really Matters
"Cause for Success makes a compelling case that the great companies of the future will be companies that have integrated the motive for profit with the imperative to care about their community and the environment. The common good and private gain are not contradictions but complements for skillfully navigating an integrating world."
- Jim Garrison, President, State of the World Forum; and Author, America As Empire
Most Inspiring!.......2005-03-01
Cause for Success was a most inspiring book. Ms. Arena helped me to realize even more ways to better run my business. It helps to know that the big guys are working hard to do what they can too.
Thank you Ms. Arena for writing an articulate, interesting and exciting book.
The Next "Good to Great".......2004-12-15
This terrific book clearly demonstrates how great companies achieved greatness - financially and socially - by taking on some of the world's worst problems. It defies critics who still contend that social responsibility is unrelated to business performance, and sets a higher standard that made me expect more, not only from my business, but from other companies that I support. It's one of the best books I've read this year.
