Product Description
The first of its kind! An essential new book for all healthcare providers treating golfers, this comprehensive text offers important information on the diagnosis and treatment of golf injuries. Dr. Blanchard combines his unique practitioner expertise with his actual play experience as a competitive golf professional to offer readers a more complete understanding of taking care of patients who love to play golf. The Physician's Golf Injury Desk Reference is designed to help providers link swing mechanics to injuries to help identify the root cause of an injury and to help identify if patients are at risk of injury before they even hit a golf ball. Material is presented in a concise and clear manner, with visual aide, objective chapter openers and summaries on what the reader should learn, as well as examples, boxed articles, and case studies to help illustrate the chapter concepts. This book helps teach readers how to perform a 14-point physical examination and a 3-point swing mechanics analysis, and includes correction protocols for any failed examination findings. The text also includes practical training technology from the PGA, LPGA, and Champions Tour for golf fitness and conditioning for "well patients" looking to improve their game.

Book Description
Darren Kilfara's scheme to study abroad at St. Andrews University in Scotland-allegedly, to write a thesis on the history of golf-was foolproof. He would enroll at the school, go to a couple of classes, earn a year's worth of university credit, and become eligible for a year-long student pass to the famed golf courses of St. Andrews, the birthplace of the game, for the low, low price of $150. A perfect plan, so of course it went awry.
A GOLFER'S EDUCATION is the true story of a young man, once a member of Harvard's golf team and a former writer for Golf Digest, who began his year in St. Andrews as an intense, uptight golfer willing to do anything to play a great course and ended it a changed and wiser man and a better golfer in ways immeasurable by a scorecard.
Part golf travelogue and part memoir, this engaging book chronicles Kilfara's year in Scotland playing the finest golf courses in the country, especially the enigmatic Old Course; learning that the Scots see golf as a reflection of their democratic ideals; discovering the subcultures of Scottish golf-drunken bohemian street golf, homeless golf fanatics, betting parlors, and poetic BBC golf commentators; falling in love with a Scottish woman; and finally overcoming his obsession for scores and handicaps and learning to love the simplicity of the game.
Kilfara draws on his substantial knowledge of golf and course architecture to create a perceptive, insightful guide to the great golf coursesof Scotland. But at the same time, he has created a timeless story of an irreverent young man coming of age in the birthplace of the sport.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful, accurate, and quite readable.......2004-07-09
This is an approach to golf books that I would really like to see more of. The author has a very keen perception and attention to detail when it comes to describing the best that Scottish golf has to offer, but so have many others that have come before him. The wonderful part about this book is that Kilfara also opens up a part of his soul so that the reader can try to relate to or understand him as a person while he describes this journey. Many times have I read a book about sports and wondered about personal details of the author that determine his perception of what he is desacribing. Kilfara lets us in to a part of his psyche and should be roundly applauded for it. Anyone that did not enjoy this book I believe does not like, understand or appreciate golf or is plainly jealous of the wonderful courses the author has been able to play.
Hey Mr. Author!.......2002-08-29
OK, parts of the this book were really enjoyable. The author's portrayal of the town of St. Andrews and the characters that roam its ancient streets and the oldtimers who haunt the Old Course are priceless. Also, several of the courses the author describes (Machrie and Dornoch come to mind) make me want to book a trip right away.
OK, now what's disturbing about the book. What's annoying? Well, the author gets rather full of himself (oh yeah, how many times do we have to hear that he's from Harvard???) as he plays the daring expatriate who is so much better than all of the other rude, loud American tourists roaming Scotland. News Flash! Author, you will always be an American!!
The way the author breaks clubs and treats his friends and girlfriend and any other golfer on the links who never played golf for Harvard is truly horrid. Attention readers and friends of the author: never book a trip with author. Red flag.
Essentially, I fell in love with St. Andrews because of this book. This book renewed my passion for the game. But basically, after reading the book I come away with the feeling that I don't really like the author...
(So much of this book was filled with boring, detailed hole by hole accounts of the various golf outings the author made. Shoot me! Oh, yea wait till you read how the author treats the blind guy! When you get down to it, the author acts very selfish and pompous throughout the book and treats people like garbage. But before that chapter ends he will have a moment of enlightenmnet where he puts things in perspective and he repents. Then next chapter he breaks more clubs and screams some more, followed by more enlightenment and soul searching. Repeat...)
A Must Read.......2002-04-30
Kilfara really captures the essence of the game in a must read for all avid golfers. Kilfara's narrative tells an enchanting story of golf, personal growth and romance all while on an academic sojourn from Harvard. The prose is imminently readable and will capture the hearts and minds of most golfers and non-golfers alike. I wholeheartedly recommend this endearing book to all who might need a trip to the old world.
There are many 'My year in golf' books that are better.......2002-04-06
This was one of the only golf books that I read so far this year. When I read about golf, I try to balance my reading on books on instruction with books about peoples's lives at it relates to golf. I read most of this book, thinking that the premise was decent, and the appearance of the book was quite 'new' (I read it in March 2002). I have probably read 25 to 30 golf-related books and this is one of the worst. I feel there is no depth to the stories about the book. I feel like it's just some person who is trying to make a quick buck. It really left me dissatisfied.
Play it as it lies.......2002-01-03
I've encountered two types of golfers in my trips to the British Isles -- those who love to play it as it lies and those who wished they were in Hawaii. This book is for those who are fascinated with blind shots, are well aware that the weather is apt to change in an instant and find BBC broadcasts mesmerizing -- even when it's horse racing and cricket! I read this book in one sitting and loved the way it captured golf (and day-to-day life) in Scotland.

The most cohesive history of women in film available!.......2001-12-08
I can't understand how anyone has written a bad review of this book. It is filled with historical information on the women who pioneered the medium and who continue to create ground breaking work in film. My favorite thing about the book is that it does not promote just "the stars" but the important people behind the camera too - the directors, cinematographers, stunt women, and others who have built a lush history of women in film. Applause for Ally Acker for presenting such crucial information in an orderly and friendly manner. The books is equally filled with relevant facts, photos, and anecdotes. This book should be mandatory reading for every first year film student.
not worth reading.......1999-05-11
After the rave reviews, I was expecting a decent book.. very disappointed
From Anita Loos to ZaSu Pitts, Its All in There!.......1998-08-01
As a graphic design intern I had the supreme pleasure of working with Ally Acker on the video version of this book. Ally's undying, unflinching commitment to bringing the story of women in cinema to the general public is one of the finest works I've ever read, and is a resource for information and inspiration for my own fledgling forays into the world of film. Everyone, regardless of their interest or occupation, should read this book to update their knowledge of our country's history, and particularly of the pioneering women of the world of film.
WOW! What a tremendous resource!.......1998-06-19
Comprehensive to say the least! I've just discovered this amazing book...Seems like the only one like it on the shelves, and it's already out of print. Why? Female directors, producers, editors, writers, technicians, all pioneered the craft of filmmaking since it's inception in 1896. I'm a graduate of film school and not even my women professors offered this information. What is women's history always deemed obsolete or "out of print" or unimportant? An imperitive resource for anyone truly interested in film.

Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Text-Reader

Book Description
How can we study popular culture? What makes `popular culture' popular? Is popular culture important? What influence does it have?
An Introduction to Studying Popular Culture provides a clear and comprehensive answer to these questions. It presents a critical assessment of the major ways in which popular culture has been interpreted, and suggests how it may be more usefully studied.
Dominic Strinati uses the examples of cinema and television to show how we can understand popular culture from sociological and historical perspectives. He traces the development of popular Hollywood cinema, addressing key topics such as production, distribution and exhibition, narrative, and genre, with case studies of gangster and horror films, and film noir.
Strinati shows how television has been studied rather differently, with study focusing on consumption as much as on production, and he looks at how the television audience has been studied and evaluated. Returning to the idea of genre, he uses the example of soap opera to shows how genre can be used to study popular television. Finally, he assesses whether or not popular television has become a 'post-modern' medium.
Customer Reviews:
VERY popular culture!.......2001-07-05
For anybody who is interested in studying contemporary popular culture, then Dominic Strinati's lucid and well organised book provides a perfect introduction.
There are many areas in which his work does not necessarily prove conclusive. To a certain extent I was disappointed that, despite much academic rigour, Dominic did not reveal his own voice, particularly in the position that modern popular culture currently occupies in our modern social society.
However, for somebody - A' level or undergraduate - who is looking for a well written and accessible account of Hollywood, the importance of genre, or the significance of 'reception theory' in current media and film studies debate, then this is certainly an excellent first point of contact.
Thoroughly well recommended and wholeheartedly endorsed.

A great experience for players and storytellers.......2000-05-24
I have both played "The Sun Has Set" and told it, and it offers a wide expanse for both playing your own person, and following the plot. It also includes many ways to end the story, so you don't have to get the highly inferior Giovanni 4 to end your chronicle. What I found best however, was the NPC's,who can easily be turned into recurring villians (or allies, and the optional progression as either Sabbat elders, or those weaklings from the Camarilla. It didn't get the total 5 stars because the second half of the book could be focused on certain characters, not the whole party.

Book Description
Purchase this book and you'll get the free, fully searchable eBook--a $25 value! (Details are printed inside the book.)
This is likely to be the one ADO.NET book that stays next to my desk for quick reference.
— Dennis Hayes, Dot Net Developer's Journal
(Pro ADO.NET 2.0) stands head and shoulders above its competition.
— Thomas Wagner, wagnerblog.com
(Sahil Malik) covers stuff that real developers are confronted with over and over everday. He intentionally focuses on problem areas and how to address them. (And) the absolute best thing about this book is it's readability.
— Bill Ryan, Bill's House O Insomnia
Pro ADO.NET 2.0 is a guide and reference for.NET developers who are looking to further their understanding of ADO.NET 2.0.
This book takes a new approach, focusing on the practical tasks like connecting to the database, retrieving data, and working with transactions, rather than rehashing much of the MSDN documentation. Pro ADO.NET 2.0 offers the deep and much needed practical understanding, viewpoint, and knowledge developers are looking for.
This book explains what is available in ADO.NET by associating it with the need to solve a practical problem and better architect an application, rather than mugging up the hundreds of classes and properties available in the framework.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent coverage of ADO.NET 2.0, good examples.......2007-01-10
This was the first book I purchased covering ADO.NET 2.0, and I'm very glad it was.
I am an experienced .NET developer, so I was looking for something that was intelligently written, with good real-world example code snippets that can be plugged directly into apps.
Any good programmer tends to develop a consistent pattern of code for a particular task, so I personally like books that are written by such a developer who has worked with the technology long enough to have developed a good pattern of use. Mr. Malik would fit that description.
Another thing I liked about the book is that it does not spend a lot of time on non-ADO.NET topics, so you don't have to skip through a bunch of fluff chapters to get to the topic at hand. Every chapter is relevant and useful.
After reading his book, I subscribed to the author's blog, which also includes some very useful material.
Too many unnecessary analogy.......2006-10-26
Not intended for "Pro". Analogies used made this very, very slow and boring. Highly technical terms used were unnecessary and repetitive w/c makes this book can loose the momentum of the reader to focus more on the topics.
Not Recommended even with beginners.
Some Critical Data Missing.......2006-07-10
Perhaps I expected too much from this book. There are three long chapters (166 pages) on updating the data base. What is missing is information and examples on handling the inevitable errors that can occur. Too much time is spent on inept ways developers approach design and not enough time on making a good approach (timestamp) robust by defining appropriate error handling methodology. I typically reuse good examples in my code but I have not found a single routine that I can put into production code.
Really good book.......2006-07-04
This is truly the only book you will need to understand ADO.NET. It's not a reference, but that's what we have online help for.
The Best ADO.NET book.......2006-05-07
This is a real-world book. Each topic is explained to the root. The author knows the stuff, no doubt. When I bump into obstacles, I refer to this book and get the answer. I would recommend adding following topics in the next version:
1. SNAC (SQL Natvie access Client)
2. Object Data Source
3. gridview control
Overall, this is the best ADO.NET book out there. Well done!!!!
