    Book Description

Fascinating portraits of 100 men and women who have left an indelible mark on the business landscape.

Ultimately, business is about people-inventors, visionaries, courageous leaders who forge new paths. Movers and Shakers brings to life 100 men and women, who by virtue of their chutzpah and determination built companies and industries, created new ways of doing business, or revealed underlying truths about the art and science of management. From the robber barons of the early, brawny years of the twentieth century to the "new economy" techno-wizards at the beginning of the twenty-first, Movers and Shakers presents brief sketches of the gurus and giants who have made their indelible marks on the business landscape. Featuring biographies of thinkers and writers, including George Eastman, Andy Grove, Mary Parker Follett, Charles Handy, and Peter Drucker, this book reveals the defining moments that changed business history.

Colorful, incisive, and entertaining, Movers and Shakers illuminates the larger-than-life figures who have, indeed, created business as we know it today.

5 out of 5 stars Great retelling of Billy Sunday's life. For everyone from 8 to 88.......2006-06-17

This book was a biography of one of America's greatest evangelists. From his childhood growing up in Iowa to his becoming one of the best baseball players at the end of the 19th century & ultimately showing his love & passion for not only Christ but for every unsaved soul in America & beyond. He not only was a great preacher, he was a great American & showed it by helping & providing for troops & other gov't. establishments. This is definately a book that will keep your interest & attention from start to finish!!! Very inspirational; enjoy!!

      Book Description

Before there was Billy Graham, there was Billy Sunday. An evangelist of great renown in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Billy Sunday (1862-1935) gained his first fame by playing major league baseball. Four years into his career with the Chicago White Sox, he met Jesus--then retired from the game four years later to enter the Christian ministry. Sunday's three hundred revivals, featuring his fiery preaching style, attracted an estimated one hundred million listeners.

      Book Description

Dating back to its inception in 1920, the National Football League was built on and by players who loved the game of football, who had incredible pride in the game they played, and whose intensity often accompanied them off the football field. Though the league and the game have undergone many changes in the past nine decades, much has also remained the same about the people who play it - the heroes. In Sunday's Heroes: NFL Legends Talk About the Times of Their Lives, Richard Whittingham allows us to relive great moments in NFL history through the words and stories of the heroes who lived them. From Jim Thorpe to Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas to John Elway, Sunday's Heroes puts us in the huddle with the greatest players of all time, and shares some of the best football stories the NFL has to offer.

4 out of 5 stars Are You Ready for Some Football?.......2004-01-22

Just before Championship Sunday last week, I wanted to read something to get me in the mood for the two big games. Sunday's Heroes turned out to be a good choice.

The book's concept is simple. Talk to the greats of the NFL game and ask them to share their favorite stories about their own careers and the other greats they have known. Then, generously illustrate those comments with black and white photographs that capture the game's most famous and grittiest moments. Although it's not the same as watching a game, Sunday's Heroes is a wonderful pregame show.

      Here are the chapters:

Soft Helmets, Hard Heads; Curious Insights; Views from the Sidelines; Mayhem, Violence, and Pain; On the Wackier Side; Personalities; and The Ultimate Game.

For anyone who is a fan of the old NFL teams, especially the Bears, Packers, Steelers, Giants and Redskins, this book will be seen as a gift from God. Of the newer teams, only the Cowboys get a full treatment. If you are a fan of the old AFL teams or the newer NFL franchises, you won't find much in the book about your teams. That's why I graded the book down one star.

There were many interesting surprises in the book. You will learn what it was like to play with no helmet, play 60 minutes, to hear some pretty funny ways to describe plays in a huddle, and practice with some of the game's most violent defenders. The humor is sometimes very rewarding. When Joe Namath was asked by Howard Cosell how many great football commentators there were, Namath replied that there was one less than Howard thought there were. There's irony also. Mean Joe Greene is remembered for carrying a stricken Lynn Swann off the field in the 1975 AFC Championship game. Swann reports that the act wasn't the caring act it seemed. "Joe didn't care about me that much." "[Joe] just didn't want to waste a timeout. Joe was always trying to figure out how to win a ballgame."

As I finished the book, I realized that we are fortunate whenever we can live in times when the greatest violence we see is in the game of football.

Congratulations to the Patriots on their win in Super Bowl XXXVIII! Congratulations also to the Carolina Panthers for playing an outstanding game against them.

4 out of 5 stars The making of a genius..........2005-09-16

While his later works, especially mid-late 90's, are much more mature, Henry did pretty good for his first several forays into the writing world. His poetry is mind-numbingly dense, and can only be taken in small doses. His short stories and rants are easier to absorb, and it's cool to hear a young man my age vent with such precision. Much of what he writes is to be taken as abstract; when speaking of murder and other dispicable acts, you know he is merely fantasizing. Get this book to read the more introspective and free-thinking passages Henry wrote while he was in Black Flag; it makes a nice compliment to his popular "Get In The Van" book (highly recommended).

I've read Hank's other books and I love them all; not just because they're good reading, because they're true. And this one is no exception. These first five collected books are a great look back at how it all began for a man that became such a voice for hard reality, pain and strength. If you don't want to have to think about any of those things, I wouldn't recommend this book to you, or maybe I would, because it's always good to view both sides of the coin in life.

Though fictional, with the exception of his journal entries, all the short prose and poems have an edge to them that makes you wonder if maybe they could be true; as if your reading the story of someone else's life or even your own. Rollins has a masterful grip on how people think, feel and interact and he's not afraid to delve deep into the darkest parts to put them on paper.

                                    3 out of 5 stars Certain demographics.......2003-04-03

Henry Rollins appeals to a very specific demographic: That being the young, misfit of society, usually lives in a small town and has been ostracized their whole life. You devour every page, every note, every word of artists like Henry Rollins, because nobody in your school likes you, because you're working a really bad job trying to get through college, because things never got better when you got out of school, just a meaner continuance of what came before. So you draw strength from Henry and his madness. Me, personally I'm tired of his books because I've moved on from the phase of life but if you're 14-26 you should read this stuff.

You know those nights...the ones that make you want to dig a big hole and pull the ground over your head or the kind of days when getting hit by a bus would be a HUGE improvement? If you're a fan of humanity as it stands, this book will cure you of that quickly. It's as real and raw as anything ever written and far more honest than is likely to make you feel comfortable. This is the sort of stuff that rattles in your head when aren't sure why you even bother waking up anymore. This book will keep you company in the dark hours and soothe even the most bruised soul. If you're not a "HAPPY" person, this book probably belongs on your shelf.

... then you can identify with a lot that Hank says in these five books. Altougth the tend to run together, this is a great combination of prose and poetry. First find Get In The Van, then pick this book up.

5 out of 5 stars A literary classic of the chess world........2006-03-21

I think this must be one of the literary classics of the chess world. The English is impeccable, in a slightly formal, sometimes quizzical, sometimes delightfully unexpected way. This should be no surprise from an author who weaves his creation around quotes from Shakespeare and the Bible - but Marin is Romanian, and lists books in various other Eastern European languages in his Bibliography.

It has never been easy to convince normal human chess-beings that defence can be exciting. However, looking at the chapter titles of this book, you might imagine that attack was the boring part! Sacrifices are exciting, right? No fewer than five (of the sixteen) chapters are devoted to sacrifices, and then there are chapters on perpetual check and stalemate, which are also almost always set up with sacrifices. There is also 'The King as a Fighting Unit' which has some examples that you will believe must be magical!

As befits a gentleman with such impeccable grammar, Marin is a lover of the classics. Time after time he demonstrates how the greats of yesteryear were every bit as insightful and as skilled in calculation as modern grandmasters. But this isn't a
historical collection; most of the games are from the cut-throat modern era, many of them Marin's own, with little anecdotes that place you right in centre stage in crucial matches. It's a really good feeling to win a game and earn a prize, but it's also great to be the guy that saves a half-point that wins the match for the team!

3 out of 5 stars Stick to Chess.......2004-04-17

While this isn't a bad book, it's not in the same league as the Soltis and Crouch books. What's annoying about the book is the profusion of religious quotes. If you are going to write a book about chess, stick to chess. If you want to muse about religion and chess, go play on the church chess team.

                                    Book Description

Joan Hangarter bought a disability policy in 1990 to protect her in case of serious illness. When she did become disabled a decade later, she ended up homeless and on welfare when the company refused to pay. With the help of her attorney, Ray Bourhis, she fought back, winning a $7.7 million verdict against the company.
In "Insult to Injury, Bourhis walks readers through this case study in bad faith double-dealing by insurance providers. Bourhis, a national champion of policy-holder rights, uses an engaging narrative style to reveal the back-room strategic mind-set that drives these illegal practices, how low-level employees are duped into unethical conduct, and how insurers manipulate data and witnesses in the few cases that do go to trial. He also explains the key regulatory oversights that encourage such corruption, and how the American legal system actually facilitates insurer fraud. "Insult to Injury closes with a roadmap to reform -- advice no one who holds a policy can afford to ignore.

5 out of 5 stars Insurance Company Practices Exposed--But What to Do?.......2006-07-30

Ray Bourhis has done a masterful job of telling the story of his client, Joan Hangartner, (and several others) in their battle with the Unum-Provident disability giant. This book is an easy read that will terrify anyone who is thinking about making a claim against a disability insurance policy. As Bourhis points out, Unum is no worse than any of the others--the disability insurance companies have "done the math" and figure out that denying valid claims and forcing people to litigate for years if very profitable for the companies.

The disability insurance companies don't care about getting hit every once in a while like the massive verdict he got on behalf of Dr. Hangartner... their profits are still enormous. Bourhis also does a great job (discouraging as it is) of showing how most states lack any real "bad faith" laws that can be used to discourage the disability insurance companies from continuing to look after themselves before their insureds. Finally, Bourhis accurately shows that there is no effective meaningful oversite of the insurance industry by the federal government.

Simply, it takes lawsuits like his to break down the veil of secrecy that the insurance companies hide behind.

In short, if you like to read legal non-fiction, (and you like, for example the Gerry Spence books about his trials) then you will enjoy this book

1 out of 5 stars Don't quit your day job..........2006-03-14

When you read this book it is very clear that Mr. Bourhis is writing it from a plaintiff's attorney point-of-view. Which is fine, just accept that fact when you read the book and know that the book is very one-sided and filled with only partial truths.

In his book he slays insurance companies, UnumProvident in particular, for not being fair, objective, or reasonable in their claim handling practices. Mr. Bourhis is neither fair, objective, nor reasonable in his depiction of insurance claims.

Mr. Bourhis clearly thinks a lot more of himself and his legal prowess. His writing skills, however, leave a lot to be desired. I had to laugh at some of his descriptions of UnumProvident employees. Example - "I don't know where insurance companies find these people but Ryan seemed like yet another excessively clean-cut looking guy - the kind of fellow you might expect to see wearing a white uniform and selling ice cream cones at Disneyland."

What did you think, Mr. Bourhis, that insurance companies only hire the "wolves in sheep's' clothing"? Did you expect all claim examiners to look like witches and ogres out to terrorize the villagers and eat their children? This is, after all, another vicious attempt by insurance companies to charm and disarm the claimant so they can swoop in for the kill, you know.

You will also notice how he refers to the employees primarily by their last names in an attempt to de-humanize those individuals. If they seem less human - less like your brother, sister, neighbor, or friend - it is a lot easier to hate them and vilify them as he has done in his book.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Very Informative!.......2005-12-26

Insult to Injury" focuses on a disabled chiropractor driven to the brink by an insurance company (UnumProvident) that unjustly denied her claim for benefits; the "good news" is that Bourhis and his associates were eventually able to right the wrong after a long legal battle made incredibly difficult by the company's calculated mendacity and the industry's success in prior lobbying of Congress and state legislatures.

When Dr. Hangarter first purchased her disability policy from Paul Revere Insurance, companies made their profits primarily on double-digit investment profits. However, the market changed and the companies found themselves under increasing pressure. In the meantime, Dr. Hangarter was injured providing treatment to a patient, and despite significant efforts at treatment, had to give up her practice and rely on disability payments from Paul Revere. Eventually Revere was sold and then became part of UnumProvident, and Dr. Hangarter's world was turned upside down.

New corporate leadership was brought in and began a deliberate policy of searching for ways to deny benefits - goals were set, customers were lied to regarding whether they could appeal and what was covered, expert testimony was slanted through incomplete information, documents destroyed, and the disabled often forced to go through lengthy, risky, and expensive litigation to collect. Possibly most frustrating of all (to me) was the fact that even when the company lost, it simply continued the same practices with other customers, and made it as difficult as possible for those victims to learn of the firm's already uncovered pattern of deceit.

Eventually because of all the resulting bad publicity UnumProvident's CEO was "forced out," given a $17 million payment, and all his cronies were left behind. Not much of a victory for truth and virtue. Meanwhile, President Bush touts his efforts and legislative victory to make righting such wrongs more difficult, and most state insurance commissioners and laws remain toothless. (California was a fortunate exception.)

"Insult to Injury" also goes a long way towards explaining why large punitive damages are sometimes necessary in the absence of innate corporate honesty and laws that mandate such.

And now we're reading about insurance companies and how they are managing to not pay Hurricane Katrina victims.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Offers a new Perspective..........2005-10-05

It shows the worse of the worse in the insurance industry. I came away wondering if the all the money I spend on medical, auto, home and life is actually buying me something. Maybe I need reinsurance for my insurance. What a mess?

I always assumed they charged an appropriate rate for the risk and numbers. If they made a mistake like they made foreseeing interest rates, the new policies holders just paid more in premiums.

In the end, the case was made for higher punitive damages. I still struggle with this. It seems to me companies who are doing this much wrong by the numbers need to be deterred. But I still have trouble seeing dollars that large going to a few plaintiffs. I am not sure if this is where the class action suits come into play. I don't what the fix is but my gut says there must be a better way to punish them. One thing for sure is it needs to be stopped.
