The best book about Warren Buffett (including his Berkshire days).......2006-10-06
First, I want to mention two constructive feedback about this book. One is that this book is probably only suitable for Warren Buffett fanatics/fans. For general investors interested about Berkshire Hathaway or how Warren Buffett invest, this is probably not the best book to read (as it has so much more info. i.e. more than 1000 pages). Second is that I have read this book more than once and I still don't know how the book is organized (the chapters aren't following chronological order, alphabetical nor topical order), therefore it is quite confusing to read as you progress from one chapter to another. Only after you read enough chapter (or completed the book) then you can put it all in the big picture in your head (from Warren's childhood till his current Berkshire days). Nonetheless, kudos to Andrew Kilpatrick for putting this book together. Moreover, once you know the limitation, this book is easily considered the best book about Warren Buffett in my opinion.
Now about the content of the book. You will learn a lot about Warren Buffett and his life, and not only investing topic (investing decisions that he made throughout his career) but his life principles, family, and business in general as well. You will learn about his first job delivering papers when he was 13 (he filed income tax and deducted the bike as business cost), and how he build his first business (pinball machine business), created Buffett partnership, break it up (liquidate), acquire berkshire mills, creating Berkshire Hathaway as investment vehicle, and many other great investment decision/story that he made (Geico, See's Candies, Dairy Queen, General Re, Coca Cola, Salomon, Washington Post, Gillette etc)
Buffett concrete rules for investing are:
1. Never lose money
2. Never forget rule #1
I know it's easier said (what he say above about to never lose money) than done based on my 10 years of invesitng experience , but then again I'm no Warren Buffett.
In my opinion, here are the 5 strategy/skills that Warren Buffett uses (Mr. Buffett, please correct me if I'm wrong):
1. Intrinsic Value
2. Margin of Safety
3. Temperament (discipline and understanding Mr.Market)
4. Circle of Competence (knowing what your circle of competence)
5. Common Sense (which I think is the most important factor and encapsulate everything about Warren Buffett.)
You will learn that Warren is very good with numbers (calculating in his head) and memorizing so many facts and numbers. You will also learn that Warren is a man with a very good sense of humor.
There are so many things/chapters that I like on this book. Let me try to mention two of my favorite sections.
One is when Warren need to make a decision who would run Salomon ($150B institution with 8000 employees) within 2 days during their first crisis. There are 12 top-level managers that he interviewed. "This was the most important hire of my life", said Warren to the Columbia business students. The chapter explain his thought process of this candidate selection in detail. Warren mentioned that the good news (for the students and the candidate) is that he didn't ask what their grades were (laughter). Warren also said, "Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. and if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you. if you think about it, it's true, if you hire somebody without integrity, you want them to be dumb and lazy" (laughter). And he conclude the topic with this statement which I think is very powerful: "Pick the kind of person to work for you that you want to marry your son or daughter. You won't go wrong". By the way, he picked Deryck Maughan by the way for his integrity.
Another chapter that I really like is how Warren put the audience (of more than 2000 people) through Business School in an electrifying two minutes (The chapter about "Generics"). See how Warren answer the question of "Will developments in the generic brand area hurt coca-cola?" which is a very important questions. I'll try not to spill too much and take the joy of reading this chapter yourself but he basically explains in a nutshell (with all the details and numbers) how business and competition works (and using several other example like Gilette, Marlboro, Sam Cola etc) and how he convinced the audience (and me as a reader) that coca cola is considered immune to generics. He explains how one can save $500 for smoking generic brand (vs Marlboro) which is a lot of money. While a man will probably will only save $11 per year by not using Gilette Sensor and probably leave band-aids on his face and an uncomfotable experience for opting for generics/lower quality blades. And for coca cola, the net profit margin is only 1 cents per serving (can) while a lot of the ingredients cost (such as the aluminium close to 6 cents a can, sugar 1.3 ounce per can or 1.75 cents etc) the same regardless for coke or other cola company.
I'll stop here before it's getting too long. In summary, If you are a Warren Buffett fans, then this book is for you. If you are uncertain, you can get other books first (potentially less thick book), like "Warren Buffet Way" or maybe "Buffettology", and if you like them (Warren) or want to know more about Warren then get this book. I personally don't like it in the beginning but as time goes by (and after I re-read the book/chapters), I changed my mind, this book is a masterpiece.
As a Berkshire shareholder, I want to encourage all berkshire shareholders (and potential/future shareholders) to read this book to know more about the person in charge of your berkshire investment. I also want to encourage all shareholders to go to the annual shareholder meeting while Mr. Buffett is still in charge.
Last but not least, if I have to sum this book up in a word or two, I would use the word "WISDOM" to describe this book, though I have a strong feeling that Warren will disagree with me and think that the more suitable phrase is "COMMON SENSE"
If you're looking for detail, you came to the right place!.......2004-01-11
This is obviously the most comprehensive book ever written on the life of Warren Buffett, the undisputed world champion of investing. This is not a quick "How to invest" book, but if you are looking to learn as much as you possibly can about Warren Buffett and the cult of investors who make the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting a "Woodstock for Capitalists", this book is for you. As an added bonus, at over 1,400 pages you will be sure to have a functional doorstop when you have completed reading this monster.
too thick, but I like it and enjoy it........2003-07-01
I was attracted by the first edition of this book(in chinese). Really interesting.
So I bought this latest version.
Wow!.......2003-03-08
This is a great book that adds detailed research not included in Warren Buffett's annual reports for Berkshire Hathaway.
Recommended highly!

disappointing.......2006-10-12
This is really boring, and in my estimation, poorly written. Jimmy Stewart was a great movie star and I grew up watching his westerns. I certainly didn't learn anything additional about him or his family than has already been published, save your money.

From his perch somewhere in Brooklyn, New York, essayist Daniel Harris launches a loquacious jeremiad against the way in which consumerism and its ideologies have insinuated themselves into our sense of self. Cute, Quaint, Hungry and Romantic is a critical examination of the everyday things that surround us--from washing machines to vitamin supplements, reproduction antiques to supermodels. Taking aim at cuteness, quaintness, coolness, the romantic, zaniness, the futuristic, deliciousness, the natural, glamorousness, and cleanness, he seeks to expose just how tangled is the web we have woven, his goal being to show "how the aesthetics of consumerism are the lies we tell ourselves to preserve our individuality." Buying a four-by-four does not make us roughriders or adventurers, despite the names such vehicles bear. We know this as we drive our Wrangler or Jeep through the smooth streets of suburbia, yet the off-road ads still appeal. The perversity is the way in which attempts at iconoclasm are themselves domesticated into corporate opportunity: dirty denim, pick-up trucks as general vehicles, "wackiness."
Harris is not a man to mince his words. The reader sits almost breathless in the face of his vituperation. For example, discussing teenagers and coolness, he writes: "The romantic movement's cult of the child has created a foul-mouthed enfant terrible who has turned the playground into a necropolis, where prematurely aged Byronic figures stagger from the merry-go-round to the seesaw to the jungle gym, striking poses of misery and ennui, convinced that their solemnity lends them an air of sophistication and maturity."
The critique is scathing and often penetrating. Cute, Quaint, Hungry and Romantic is a bracing read and a call to consciousness. Even the least sophisticated consumers know they are manipulated. Even the most sophisticated, Harris argues, do not really acknowledge how much they, too, are willing dupes.--J. Riches
Book Description
A psychic voyage into the aesthetic unconscious of the consumer, examining the broad principles that govern the appearance of popular culture, from cuteness to quaintness, coolness to cleanness, the natural to the futuristic
Why has the ring of the telephone become a beep? What ever happened to the bumpers and fenders of cars? Why do food commercials never mention hunger?
In this encyclopedia of low-brow aesthetics, Daniel Harris concentrates on the nuances of non-art, the uses of the useless, the politics of product design and advertising. We learn how advertisers exaggerate our sensual responses to eating, how close-up nature photography exaggerates the accessibility of the natural world, and how the mutated physiology of dolls invites our pity and affection.
In studying its aesthetics, we find consumerism instills disappointment rather than gratification, convincing us that our lives are deficient and wanting. If we are what we buy, then we must buy in order to be.

Eh.......2006-07-03
I'm a bit of a shopaholic and I like to read so I buy books often...maybe by the bus load. So durring one of my amazon buy-fests I picked up this book.
Now I'm a college kid looking into going to grad school for advertising so I'm no Bimbo and I'm no stranger to text book jabber after 10 semesters in school. This book however cute, funny and interesting, seems to be much more focused on seeing how many great scrabble words Harris can shove into one run on sentence after another. I spent way more time thinking about what kind of context he was using each word in and how that related to anything than actually following the point he was trying to make.
I don't know if there is enough adderall in the world to make this book readable.
I laughed out loud.......2006-05-04
While some of his ideas are not profound or original, the words he chooses to deliver them make the book a very enjoyable read. I love his biting wit and cynicism. I couldn't stop laughing through the "cute" chapter.
Flawed, but still a great read.......2003-03-30
There's a certain kind of book for which equivalence of opinion matters less than presentation. Daniel Harris's book falls into that category; it throws out a multitude of arguments, some rational, some purely bitter, some laughably overboard, yet it's all still *interesting*, and maintained my interest even when I thought Harris was overdoing it. A diatribe against the "cuteness factor" of stuffed animals might be something of a passe topic, but when it ends with a hilariously-entertaining listing of the way in which these artifacts subvert reality--including their ignorance of how real animals eat the "struggling young of competing species"--it at least puts a new spin on this sort of topic.
While many of Harris's points seem obvious and overdone, there's enough insight contained in several sections to make this worthwhile even as a serious review. The analysis of the aesthetic of cleanliness was a particular eye-opener, for example, as Harris makes the argument that "clean" is no longer described as the mere absense of filth; things now must be disinfected, spotless, gleaming, and (especially) lemon-fresh. Interesting stuff.
Verdict: Not necessarily the most scholarly tome, and the factual errors (c'mon, he even messes up the "Gremlins" rules!) might diminish its factual value. But still a great read, presenting many intriguing viewpoints on the aesthetics of consumerism.
Less is more........2002-08-10
Daniel Harris has delivered the ultimate post-postmodern internet book marketing triumph, keywords: hoisted, petard. Yes, there does exist an actual hard copy edition by this title which you can have delivered to your mailbox. But why would you bother paying for the frankly dreary "actual book" when the title; cover art; and sample pages available on the internet deliver considerably more bang for your bambi? Daniel Harris's tragedy is that he has outdone the more obscure theoreticians he so delights in superficially deriding. If it's way more fun to make fun of Lacan than to actually read him, where does that put Daniel Harris?
A gem of a book........2002-05-31
I've read a ton of texts about "consumer culture" and this is by far one of the best. What's most intruiging about its arguments is that Harris is willing to explore how the culture is appealing, plausible, seductive, rather than just hideous kitsch that the sweaty masses--for reasons obscure--tend to enjoy. Harris is brilliantly insightful, tactful, persuasive.

only a "quick start" guide.......2007-10-02
After reading this book, I feel like I have some good idea of Flex, but not enough. It was really easy to follow (minus errors below), but it doesn't explain the fundamentals as well as I would like.
Chapter 10, where you make your big project, has 2 big errors that had me stuck for awhile. The xml element used is 'image', not 'stock'. The custom event was 'bookSelected' not 'selectedBook' (pg 360, although later on it's right).
Great Book!.......2007-08-24
This book walks you through everything you need to know to get a fast start on Flex 2 and ActionScript 3. The examples are clear and concise and provide a great framework to build upon. I would recommend this to any Flex 2/AS3 programmer as a primer and an excellent reference guide.
This is the book to get.......2007-08-12
I am new to the Flex 2 and AS3 and I needed to learn it quickly for my current job. This book really helped me to start and get comfortable with Flex. This is the only book you will need to start you on Flex and AS3. Everything is explained thoroughly and methodically. You will get to know not only how to but also why, and this was very important to me and what other books lacked. Mr. Brown does a great job of putting the chapters together the book flows so that it is not the mind numbing textbook but an easy and enjoyable read. This book is a must for anyone who is starting with Flex.
Good book - watch out for the errors........2007-07-30
This book is my first introduction to Flex and Actionscript. I find the although I'm an experienced technical professional reiterating some of the basics is helpful in learning a new product and Charles Brown has defintely achieved that for me without being insulting or redundant in this book. There are a few issues with the downloads (mostly the assets not being in an asset folder as they claim to be in the book) and there are definitely some issues with the examples but if you're careful you can usually work them out for yourself. Over all it's a pretty good read and will definitely teach you a few basics of Flex, more so than Actionscript.
A great walk-through.......2007-07-22
As a walk-through, I've found EGF2A3 to be quick and efficient. FoE and Brown lose a couple of stars due to a few mistakes in the guide's code, as well as the poorly organized download files. With a little research it's possible to work through each mistake and complete each exercise. The "finished code summaries" are accurate so many issues can be resolved by comparing blocks of code from page to page. The FoE website also has a basic forum that offers reader-generated solutions.
I'll return one star since, despite my criticism, this guide remained the easiest and fastest introduction to Flex 2. I can recommend EGF2A3 to advanced Flash developers as an efficient walk-through of Flex 2's core functions in only a few days.
Book Description
In September 2003, Macromedia released Flash MX 2004, and with it, ActionScript 2.0, a dramatically improved version of Flash's programming language. ActionScript 2.0 introduces a formal object-oriented programming syntax and methodology for creating Flash applications. From a developer's perspective, the new OOP-based techniques in ActionScript 2.0 make applications more natural to plan and conceptualize, more stable, more reusable across projects, easier to maintain, change, and expand upon, and much more. In short, they enhance the entire development process. In Essential ActionScript 2.0, bestselling author Colin Moock--one of the most universally respected developers in the Flash community--covers everything you'll need to know about the new ActionScript language and its methodologies for producing movies, animation, and applications on the web. Moock guides readers through this important new territory with his trademark easy-to-understand style and expertise. Moock's goal throughout the book is not just to get you to use object-oriented programming in your daily Flash work: he wants you to reap the benefits of OOP; he wants you to understand ActionScript 2.0 completely. And without question, Moock is the author who can make this happen. Essential ActionScript 2.0 begins with a tour of the language, including the fundamentals of object-oriented concepts, syntax, and usage. Those who are new to OOP will learn the basics and how to apply their understanding. Those who are familiar with OOP will leverage their prior experience to learn about Flash-based OOP. The next part of the book shows how to structure entire applications with ActionScript 2.0, teaching you best practices and techniques to build scalable, extensible, stable apps. Next, you'll explore a variety of approaches to various programming situations by applying object-oriented programming strategies, known as design patterns, to Flash. Experienced Flash developers and programmers coming from other languages will enjoy the sheer depth of Moocks's coverage and expertise in Essential ActionScript 2.0. Novice programmers will appreciate the frequent, low-jargon explanations that are often glossed over by advanced programming books. As usual, Moock guarantees quality and accuracy by working closely with Macromedia Flash engineers, including Rebecca Sun, lead developer of ActionScript 2.0. Whether you're ready to make the move to ActionScript 2.0 now or simply assessing it for the future, you'll find everything you need to know within this book. Essential ActionScript 2.0 is the one book every ActionScript coder must own.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, but..........2007-06-19
As my headline suggested, the book is good. It provides lot of information about OOP using ActionScript. However, I wish its layout was done somewhat better, more intuitive.
Lots of important information should have been highlighted. More specifically, it is hard to find certain crucial concepts, because they look no different from ordinary texts.
Those are just some of my thoughts.
Top-Tier Computer Science Course in a Book.......2007-05-14
I took a Java course at the University of Texas @ Austin, which has a well regarded CS program, and I walked out of it knowing what classes, subclasses, and instances were, but no idea how to practically use them. After reading Moock's book, I not only better understand the theory behind object-oriented programming, but how to use it following best practices. I wish I hadn't taken the Java course, because in 500 pages Moock takes you through 3 semesters worth of material.
Of course, Essential ActionScript 3.0 is coming out soon, so you might want to wait for it, but make sure you buy at least one of them.
Excellent book for in-depth actionscript 2.0 and OOP programming alike.......2007-05-03
As an occasional actionscript programmer, I try to stay to keep myself updated with the language as it evolves, as it has become the standard tools for my digital/artistic works.
A year ago I dove into "ActionScript for Flash MX : the Definitive Guide" - I must admit I didn't understand some parts of it at first read - and got my poor programming skills to improve themselves at least a few notches up.
I was a bit discouraged at all this Flash evolutions, thinking I'd be left behind (not to mention Flex 2 and Actionscript 3 right now), when I almost reluctantly bought this book.
Well, it actually got me excited. Not only I feel way better in Actionscript programming now, seeing and understanding the improvements of the language (I still use the Definitive Guide for its handy and complete language reference while I code), but it also actually taught the principles of Object Oriented Programming.
It does use some plain metaphors at first like all OOP stuff for dummies I've read here and there, but the author has a way of putting things in a relevent way that makes you actually understand what is what, what goes where, and why. It's clear.
It's easy, going along his explanations and tutorials, and he also shows you thoroughly the possibilities and limitations of every concepts in the (relative to the Flash environment) he ever talks about, yet remaining accessible even to non-savvy programmers.
A must have, like all his books I guess.
Excellent Action Script Book.......2007-03-14
My purchase of this book really helps mne a lot. It added up more knowledge and technique on my present expertise with Flash. Highly recommended for all Flash Action Scripters.
hard to understand for beginners.......2007-03-09
I am a beginner, I should understand that. But i wanted to buy it still thinking it would have been good. Its probably great for advance people but i found it personaly very difficult to understand as i am just a low beginner.

Quick Way to Learn!.......2005-12-11
Honestly, before reviewing this CD, I was a little skeptical about using CDs to learn something like Actionscript. I felt that I would probably need to invest in some good reference books and take a class at a local training center.
I was very surprised how well put together I found the CD. I was familiar with Joey Lott's written work like the Macromedia Flash MX 2004 ActionScript Bible and Complete Flash Remoting MX. However, I had never used any other material from him before.
The CD interface was easy to navigate. You can rewind, fast forward, stop and other features. The most valuable feature I found though, was actually the pause feature.
Once I would watch the instruction, I would pause it, minimize (resize) and try it right then on Flash MX 2004. This helped reinforce my learning, as well as, prove to me I could do it.
Lott's examples and techniques were easy to understand and follow.
If you are not the "book learning-type person," or like me, you just don't always have the time to read a 1,000 page book, try the line of CDs from (...)
