Though journalists and other outsiders have often written about the perils and rewards of taking to the sea for a living, this is "the first collection written by fishermen themselves," a distinction that proves substantial after reading Out on the Deep Blue. These first-hand accounts by men and women involved in the world's most dangerous occupation are gripping not only because of their authenticity, but because these people represent a slim minority who willingly engage in a daily battle against nature at a time when "85 percent of Americans live in urban or suburban areas," far from any kind of true wilderness. These are gripping stories of quick riches and even quicker death, of fishing seasons that last less than a day, and of jobs that involve hours of tedium interrupted by bouts of frenetic effort. Set in the frigid and unforgiving waters of remote places such as the Bering Sea and the North Atlantic, these 19 chapters vividly describe the realities and motivations of those pursuing swordfish, herring, salmon, crab, urchins, and other creatures of the deep. They also deal with the realities of dwindling resources, and subsequent jobs, and the bitterness and loss of purpose that often results for those whose sense of self is intrinsically tied to their occupation. Featuring such noted authors as Peter Matthiessen, Spike Walker, and Linda Greenlaw, this fine compendium is an absorbing look at a world few even consider, much less experience. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
Nineteen diverse fisher-writers, from the famous to the unknown, take the reader swordfish harpooning on the Georges Banks, winter crabbing in the Bering Sea, sea-urchin-diving off Maine, herring fishing in Alaska, and shark-harpooning off Scotland. Awesome Collection!.......2002-03-02
Reading this book, I felt right on the water--pitching and rolling with the waves. The first essay by Marie Beaver brings the reader directly into the essence of what it means to work in a natural environment and to make choices about one's life. Thank you to Fields for collecting a reminder of a natural world and an occupation now in decline.

W.Eugene Smith Bio.......2007-01-09
Book was received quickly and in better than expected condition. Fully satisfactory.
Shadow and Substance.......2000-03-29
I would recommend the biography of W. Eugene Smith, Shadow and Substance: The Life and Work of an American Photographer to anyone interested in the life and times of this photographer. I felt that the author drew a picture of a driven, artist who had a sense of public right and wrong. From this book, I learned that whether or not he led a life that I would want my children to emulate, his sense of outrage towards social injustices were larger than his personal being. And, he presented his stories "up close" and personal. After reading the book, the photo essays became even more revolutionary and engaging. Smith becomes real. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
Fine overview and analysis --- but VERY academic.......2005-06-16
It's great that there's now this critical overview of Harrison. It's also great that other books by and about him have come out recently---his memoir and the "Conversations." Altogether they're an amazing look at a wonderful writer.
(I have to note that in his "Conversations" Harrison repeatedly trashes the academic MFA system and bemoans the fact that a writer can't make a living unless he does something else---in Harrison's case, write screenplays. Do other prominent writers today express similar sentiments or is Harrison a stand-out in his candor in this regard?)
"True Bones" is a fine ruminating overview of Harrison's work. I'm greatly enjoying it (most of the way through). BUT! "Ruminating" implies way too much accessibility. It's extremely academic---intentionally so, but this isn't mentioned in the other reviews. It's almost impossible for a layman to read. I've read a ton of hard stuff and I can just barely manage this one. There are occasional standout paragraphs of direct clarity but most requires heavy digging. Be prepared! Complex, convoluted sentences ahoy!
I guess it also serves to introduce one to some of the values in academia today, such as in the essay that gives a postmodern analysis, but---hoo, that one was over the top. It doesn't give a hint as to WHY one would have such values, except that it, too, did have a few neat insights, again making it worth the work.
Still, it's great to see someone paying such close and literary attention to Harrison's work. And there are indeed insights in it throughout. I wrote this "Reader Review" mostly to note that it's a big effort, but well worth it. (I write, too, with wishes that academia would be more accessible.)
The scattered other reviews of Harrison's work are undoubtedly more accessible. But "True Bones" is sustained, in-depth and references many of those reviews as well as many other academic ideas, explaining and showing how Harrison works in light of them, even though the "light" of academia is a tricky thing and even though academia is a scene that seems out of touch---as Harrison himself often notes.
A must have for the serious Harrison fan..........2002-11-03
This compilation of critical essays by Dr. Patrick Smith is the first full-length text to thoroughly examine the scope of Harrison's fiction. Smith's writing is clear and concise and offers itself as an intellectually rich and beautifully written companion to the work of a truly incredible contemporary writer. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the fiction of Jim Harrison. Thank you Dr. Smith!
Brilliant and insightful!.......2002-07-09
If you care at all about Jim Harrison's peerless work and the timeless craft of writing, you will devour the emerging talents of Patrick Smith as he leads you through the rich world of Mr. Harrison's work.
Insightful analysis, thought-provoking attitudes and fresh reasoning pour forth from the new and credible voice of Dr. Smith, who demonstrates complete mastery of his subject matter. I applaud this long-overdue look at one of the great voices in fiction, by a new and worthy writer.
Bravo, Dr. Smith!

Book Description
Starting with his time as a film student, this is a critical journey through the films Lucas has directed and actively produced. It encompasses his abstract early works such as 'Look at Life' and '6.18.67', the mainstream successes of 'American Graffiti', 'Star Wars', and 'Indiana Jones' and the record-breaking 'Star Wars' prequel trilogy. There is also an extensive section detailing other projects in which he has had a hand, such as Paul Schraeder's 'Mishima', Haskell Wexler's controversial 'Latino' and Francis Ford Coppola's 'Tucker: The Man and His Dream'. This is an indispensable reference to the work of George Lucas - the mogul, the mythmaker, the one-man brand and the most successful independent filmmaker who has every lived.
Customer Reviews:
light but well researched.......2003-12-18
This is a fairly academic (but not strictly so) approach to the films of George Lucas. As the author states in the introduction it is not a biography, but rather looks at each major films Lucas has been connected with, exploring the creative process, major themes and other aspects. The book, it seems, it aimed at film students mainly, giving brief overviews of different parts of the production process (scripting, casting, production). It also looks at major themes, the tendency of Lucas' films to go "forwards/backwards" in the story line and the use of music.
I am not sure exactly who this book is aimed at. Film school student may find the book a little thin on details, casual fans will find it a little dry. There are plenty of tidbits, trivia and anecdotes, but since the book never decides if it is aimed at the general public or USC grad students, it tends to be unsatisfying. Smith also tends to come off as a Lucas apologist. Sometimes he is correct in pointing out the impossible problem of pleasing rabid fans and snooty critics, but at other times he seems to be arguing that Lucas is just "misunderstood," to me a sign of a weak argument.
Smith has obviously done his homework, and his notes about the multiple versions of the film are interesting with out resorting to trainspotting. Speaking of which, his distinctly UK viewpoint is sometimes interesting for it's removed objectivity, but also can get in the way when he must cross cultural barriers to understand the very American Lucas.
Good launching pad for the discussion of Lucas' work, it makes a case that Lucas' main contribution to film has been technical not narrative.

Product Description
This volume of fresh essays by leading scholars develops a new approach to expressionist film. For nearly half a century Siegfried Kracauer's From Caligari to Hitler and Lotte Eisner's The Haunted Screen have shaped the understanding of the cinema of this period. However, fifty years on, there is a growing awareness that a new account is overdue. This attempt to rewrite the story of expressionist cinema begins with a fundamentally new interpretation of Dr. Caligari, and together with fresh views of other expressionist classics, offers new perspectives on important alternative film styles and genres that emerged in films by such eminent directors as Ernst Lubitsch, Joe May, Fritz Lang, Karl Grune, F. W. Murnau, and E. A. Dupont. In pursuing such variety, the book strives for a picture of the cinema in the early years of Weimar that in thematic as well as stylistic terms reflects the vibrant, multifaceted cultural and political developments of the period. The book is a joint venture of the Centre for European Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh, the Institute for Film Studies at the University of Mainz, and the German Film Museum in Frankfurt.

While working as a theater critic for Manhattan's New York Press in 1996, novelist Sarah Schulman reviewed the original off-Broadway production of the eventual worldwide hit Rent. She did not particularly like the show and resented what she saw as its easy and simple-minded appropriation of the East Village's gay and alternative cultures. It was only later, when a friend pointed it out to her, that she began to see that the writer and composer of Rent, Jonathan Larson, had "borrowed" a good chunk of his play's plot and detail from Schulman's own 1987 novel People in Trouble. This shock of recognition was transformative, and it ultimately led to the writing of Stagestruck.
Schulman begins with an unhappy account of having her novel ripped off by Larson, but uses this as a springboard to discuss the broader and more complex issues of how gay themes--particularly AIDS--are used and distorted in mainstream culture, focusing her discussion on a wide range of entertainments including the film Philadelphia, Jon Robin Baitz's play A Fair Country, performances by Diamanda Galas, and POZ magazine. As in her best novels, Schulman's observations on culture and politics are astute and startlingly original. Stagestruck is an incisive and important work of social criticism. --Michael Bronski
Book Description
In Stagestruck noted novelist and outspoken critic Sarah Schulman offers an account of her growing awareness of the startling similarities between her novel People in Trouble and the smash Broadway hit Rent. Written with a powerful and personal voice, Schulman’s book is part gossipy narrative, part behind-the-scenes glimpse into the New York theater culture, and part polemic on how mainstream artists co-opt the work of “marginal” artists to give an air of diversity and authenticity to their own work. Rising above the details of her own case, Schulman boldly uses her suspicions of copyright infringement as an opportunity to initiate a larger conversation on how AIDS and gay experience are being represented in American art and commerce.
Closely recounting her discovery of the ways in which Rent took materials from her own novel, Schulman takes us on her riveting and infuriating journey through the power structures of New York theater and media, a journey she pursued to seek legal restitution and make her voice heard. Then, to provide a cultural context for the emergence of Rent—which Schulman experienced first-hand as a weekly theater critic for the New York Press at the time of Rent’s premiere—she reveals in rich detail the off- and off-off-Broadway theater scene of the time. She argues that these often neglected works and performances provide more nuanced and accurate depictions of the lives of gay men, Latinos, blacks, lesbians and people with AIDS than popular works seen in full houses on Broadway stages. Schulman brings her discussion full circle with an incisive look at how gay and lesbian culture has become rapidly commodified, not only by mainstream theater productions such as Rent but also by its reduction into a mere demographic made palatable for niche marketing. Ultimately, Schulman argues, American art and culture has made acceptable a representation of “the homosexual” that undermines, if not completely erases, the actual experiences of people who continue to suffer from discrimination or disease. Stagestruck’s message is sure to incite discussion and raise the level of debate about cultural politics in America today.
Customer Reviews:
RENT sucks, get over it.......2005-08-29
This is a hard book to read because it makes you confront your own racisism and homophobia. If you can't deal with it, then don't bother reading this book, or any book, because you're probably not willing to think about your place in the world you live in.
This author is crazy! .......2005-07-31
Sarah Schulam relax, Rent is an amazing show and wasn't copyed from you. It was based on the opera la boheme and Jonathons larsons life. I can't belive how she could say such mean things about Jonathon Larson and Rent. To me Rent is one of teh most touching musiclas on Broadway. I'm only fifeteen and when i saw it i cried. I eman theater is my passion but when i saw Rent i thoughtr it was the most amazing thing ever put on earth lol jk. The way this book decribes rent made me want to puke. It was almost as if she hated the gay commuinty. I know she is entiltled to her opion but to say that Jonathon Larson plagorized off her was very dumb thing to say as i metointed be for it was based off the opera La boheme and off of Larson's real life. From what i know he had freinds with AIDS and freinds with drug adtictions. Sarah should have doen her ressearch before writting this.
Entertaining and Cathartic.......2001-03-22
Also, as I've come to expect with her books, Ms. Schulman manages to find the words to explain things I've always sensed but not been able to articulate. The section on marketing to gays (who, as she puts it, are still struggling with post-traumatic stress as a result of being raised in this society) was brilliant, and funny. An instance where she really stopped me in my tracks: when she compared gays and lesbians to a older relative of hers who was freed from a Nazi concentration camp and shortly afterwards had a small breakdown when trying to choose what color drinking glass to buy from a shelf of glassware that came in too many colors, sizes and shapes.
Witty and insightful.......2001-03-22
I often read a book and then, once I've seen the author read from his own stuff, had to go back and read it again with a different tone of voice. That applies to this book. It's much funnier and rueful than I realize the first time.
It's also not recommended unless you have a dark sense of humor, and understand that it's not about Rent or Broadway really, but about some of the subtle ways that history gets revised by the winners. It's a brilliant book and I often had those moments of recognition where I got goose bumps reading a paragraph. Then I would laugh at the next paragraph.
I think that people who read this ONLY because they are fans of Rent will be mystified or offended. Rent is a moving show, but it IS sort of odd for urban gays - it's kind of like reading a Hitler biography devoted solely to his being a wonderful father and compassionate family man. . . It may be true, but you have to scratch your head and wonder how the author managed to completely avoid mentioning the holocaust even once in 1000 pages, and just what was his agenda in doing so.
It is clear that Ms. Schulman's book was completely stolen by Larson. However! As she points out, the theft of the plot is not really a problem, cause plot borrowing and character theft is common practice; what she regards as the sore spot is that, in stealing those elements, Larson inadvertently did the same thing that bigots and the media often deliberately do to gays and lesbians: in the same way that the winning side of a war gets to decide what version of the war goes down in history as the TRUE version, Jonathan Larson's made-up version of the AIDS epidemic will be written on most people's hearts as the true version, when in reality it is a powerful distortion of who and what actually happened - unfortunately wrapped in some excellent theater so it is more likely to burn into people's brains as the truth.
I didn't expect so much humor from a book that makes those sorts of points. I laughed repeatedly when reading this book, starting with the introduction.
My advice to potential readers: Schulman is more like Sondheim than the Sound of Music. If you're a Broadway boy with a good heart and not much critical faculty, don't read it and you'll live happy. If you're a Broadway fan with a brain, you'll find it's not really about Broadway but rather an interesting tap dance on the subject of how things get twisted around. If you've got a political sensibility of any type, and maybe you're much older and wiser -- and you read the book with a tone of voice that's rueful and ironic much more than just angry, you'll love it. It brings out all the humor, which appears on every page, and makes me laugh even in public places.
People in Trouble were not one of my favorite novels of hers, but having read stage-struck, I now enjoyed it much more. Empathy is her funniest novel, but most experimental, and Rat Bohemia a truly angry ranting novel (and I mean it in the best Victor Hugo-if-he-were-a women sense of the word).
I'd recommend Shimmer as a more 'traditional' linear story line sort of novel - it's quite beautiful. I give this book 4 stars not because it's not wonderful, but because I liked Empathy better and so needed to keep one star extra if I ever review that book online. :-)
A Revisit.......2000-11-25
I read and reviewed this book a while back, but more recently I actually found and bought a copy of Shulman's novel "People in Trouble," while working on a chapter about Rent for a book of my own. While I enjoyed the novel to some extent, it's only slightly above average and I really could see no similarities between Rent and People in Trouble, other than the coincidences that are inevitable from the two books being set in similar times and places. Since the similarity between the two is the basis for Stage Struck, I find this book even more worthless than I did before. Having now compared the two works for myself, I now have even less respect for Shulman, and am even more convinced that this book (Stage Struck) is nothing more than an excuse for a rant and a way to cash in on someone else's success.

Know more spiritual's secrets with Houdini.......2000-05-22
This is a good book by Houdini. It exposed methods of the spiritualist and other magic secrets. I personally like the way Houdini exposed the magic of the spiritualist, like the way he has been doing during his life. If you are a fan of Houdini, you shouldn't miss this book!

Book Description
Magicians debunking charlatans and revealing secrets of the trade: it's not something that Penn and Teller or James "The Amazing" Randi invented. The legendary Harry Houdini was doing the same thing a century ago, to popular acclaim. In this 1920 book, the master showman-and surprisingly entertaining writer-uncovers the mysteries behind such extraordinary feats as fire-eating, sword-swallowing, snake-charmers, and strong men. More a simple expose of stage trickery, though, this is a brisk history of such oddities throughout history and around the world, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, from the culture of the Native Americans to that of Japan. This is a fascinating work of the strange and seemingly inexplicable made plain and understandable. Hungarian-American magician and professional skeptic EHRICH WEISS (1874-1926)-aka Harry Houdini, "Handcuff King and Jail Breaker"-also wrote Magical Rope Ties and Escapes (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924).

Just great.......2006-08-07
What a great reading! Another example that it is possible to write clear and simple evan about comlex questions. A must read book. Congratulation!!!
Disappointment.......2005-03-09
While this book is quite good in its explanation on fundamentals, I am really disappointed with its numerous typos.
Very insightful! A definite MUST for business exec & MBAs.......2004-04-21
After working under finance for more than 10 years and graduated with both a bachelor's degree in Accounting and MBA in Finance, I have never come across a better book on financial ratios and analysis than this. What Ciaran Walsh wrote here is a classic - his approach has been very illuminating yet simple. Unlike other supposedly-easy-to-use ratio books written by CPAs and PhDs for the non-financial public, Ciaran explains the intracacies of the Balance Sheet, Income and Cash Flow statements in an easy-to-understand language, step-by-step with clear examples. I am sure business people who lack the knowledge in accounting or finance will find this invaluable. Another great feature of this book is that it includes industry-wide benchmark ratio figures for UK, USA, Japanese, etc companies for comparison. This will be especially useful for would-be MBAs, etc in their financial (and to some extent strategic) analysis of real-life case studies. Should be a compulsory companion book to the normal textbooks for those pursuing business or finance majors at both undergraduate and Master's level. Ciaran Walsh's masterpiece is really way ahead of the rest.........
Exceptionally well written.......2004-03-12
If ever there was an un-putdownable book in financial management, this is it.
The author has extremely clear fundamentals, and makes it very easy to follow his logic every step of the way.
The introductory chapters on accounting are the best I have come across. The industry benchmarks are extremely useful. It would be great if we had a newer edition, with updated benchmarks, and a more industry-specific break up (e.g. software)
This book is a must-have for MBAs, under-grads, managers, small business owners, and just about anyone who needs to analyze ratios.
