Book Description

There is no magic formula for defining the world's most successful business people. In fact, one will often find that business acumen is based on many things, not least of all old-fashioned, conventional values that are more common sense than MBA blueprint.

In Pilot Your Life, Ronald Shaw tells the real-life story of his road to success with a truck-full of tips to take away from his journey.

Ronald Shaw's career is a great American success story - a young blue-collar comedian making it big in business by applying the lessons he learned in the spotlight. It almost sounds too good to be true, especially considering Shaw is the president and CEO of Pilot Pen Corporation, a $180 million a year company. It's a fact however, and this inspiring book provides readers with instructive lessons that will shed new light on ways they can incorporate old-fashioned values back into their business and personal lives. Each significant business lesson is accompanied by light hearted stories and anecdotes from the author's life.

Including testimonials from well-known figures such as Ted Turner, Larry King, and Harvey MacKay, Pilot Your Life offers readers a map through the treacherous waters of the business world and their careers.

4 out of 5 stars Pilot Your Life.......2001-10-09

"Pilot Your Life" is an entertaining, engaging, often funny guidebook for those who have the ambition to make the most of themselves, even if they don't know what that is yet. Ron Shaw boot-strapped his way to success in the corporate world through his own perseverance and gumption -- and by applying insider secrets of show business that he learned as a young comedian. He relates his screw-ups and victories in chapters that include a joke, real life stories and "what I learned" lessons. You'll be spared many embarassments by learning from his mistakes, encouraged to take risks, and inspired to finally go after what you really want.

                Book Description

Though the horror film was not officially born until Universal Pictures released Frankenstein in 1931, there were many silent films that contained terrifying scenes and horrific elements. Many of the early horror soundies drew much of their inspiration for visual design and thematic development from the silents. This filmography includes all silent films that were horrific in nature, containing one or more of the stock horror movie elements, e.g., haunted houses, ghosts, witches, monsters, the occult or hypnotism. Each entry includes release date, running time, cast and credit information, contemporary review quotes when available, and in the case of foreign films, the original title and country of origin.

...but it does list a great deal of silent horrors both rare and well-known. A perfect book for those needing titles and plot descriptions to scour local video haunts, though not so much for those looking for any interesting stories or trivia on films of the time.

Worth picking up if you're hardcore on silent screamers.

                Book Description

La Fee Verte (or "The Green Fairy") has intoxicated artists, poets, and writers ever since the late eighteenth century. Stories abound of absinthe's druglike sensations of mood lift and inspiration due to the presence of wormwood, its infamous "special" ingredient, which ultimately leads to delirium, homicidal mania, and death. Opening with the sensational 1905 Absinthe Murders, Phil Baker offers a cultural history of absinthe, from its modest origins as an herbal tonic through its luxuriantly morbid heyday in the late nineteenth century. Chronicling a fascinatingly lurid cast of historical characters who often died young, the absinthe scrapbook includes Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Dowson, Aleister Crowley, Arthur Machen, August Strindberg, Alfred Jarry, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Allais, Ernest Hemingway, and Pablo Picasso. Along with discussing the rituals and modus operandi of absinthe drinking, Baker reveals the recently discovered pharmacology of how real absinthe actually works on the nervous system, and he tests the various real and fake absinthe products that are available overseas. The Book of Absinthe is a witty, erudite primer to the world's most notorious drink.

4 out of 5 stars Viva La Fee Verte!.......2006-09-14

If you are interested in reading about the cultural and artistic history of the Green Fairy this book should be on your shelf right next to Barnaby Conrad's book. Baker has a fine sense of humor and narrative that fills the book with a memory of fin-de-siecle style decadence. Do yourself a favor, skip the Adams text, grab both this and Conrad and pour yourself a measure of liquid delight. You won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Everything you didn't know you wanted to know about Absinthe.......2006-08-24

What I like about this book is Baker's approach and all the information he gives the reader. I really enjoyed reading this book, and do, in fact, now know very much about absinthe. Baker covers: how it came about, how it influenced artists and thinkers, to how it became vilified. There are some great anictdotes about artist such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and their drinking habits that were laugh out loud funny.

I did not give the book 5 stars because it is so historical and filled with information that the book does sag a bit at points. But that does not take away terribly from the overall enjoyment I had reading it.

5 out of 5 stars cool and green.......2003-08-13

This is the best book on absinthe, even better than the Barnaby Conrad book - which is kind of 'coffee table' by comparison - even though it doesn't have any color pictures. It's more Gothic, more literary, and much funnier (in a black humor sort of way). There's a lot of stuff that isn't in Conrad at all, like Aleister Crowley, and good material on 1890s London.
I learnt a lot from this (but I probbaly won't remember it) because more than just the drink it's like an A-Z of decadence and high weirdness. And after that there's a guide to modern brands.
It also has the real pharmacology, and it exposes all that stuff about absinthe and cannabis as just plain wrong.

In an era when women set aside very little leisure time for themselves, let alone for their friends, Between Friends provides the perfect excuse to invite the girls over. Talented writer and designer Charlotte Lyons has brought together an imaginative array of craft projects that will help celebrate both your creativity and your most valued friendships.

Between Friends presents ideas for 40 handmade craft projects, and all of the projects are perfect for sharing with a close friend or a group of friends. These delightful endeavors allow you to experiment with papier-mâché, collage, découpage, knitting, needlework, painting, sewing, rug hooking, quilting, scrapbooking, and doll-making. All projects are easy to make and lovely enough to inspire a lifetime of creative pursuit. Most are excellent gift ideas; better still, the materials needed can often be found right inside the pantry or craft basket.

Projects are organized according to the amount of time they require: some (like the place card holders or frames) can be completed in an hour; others (like sachets, potato prints, and dressing room organizers) fill a leisurely afternoon. More complicated projects (such as scrapbooks, needlepoints, and friendship quilts) are to be savored over a weekend or longer.

Between Friends offers plenty of inspiration along the way. Overflowing with lavish full-color photography, the book also includes profiles of the author's friends and their crafts; there are even a few recipes to enjoy while you work. 5 out of 5 stars Great fun!!.......2003-11-25

These are lots of fun and in many cases practical too :) One thing that's especially neat about this book isthat the crafts are broken down into chapters according to how long they'll likely take (e.g. Chapter 1: "in an hour" - these are crafts like seed packets, paper weights, quick frame, painted tea pot etc; Chapter 2: Half a day - these are crafts like note box, a book bag, flea market pillow, oatmeal cake, etc; Chapter 3: All Day -memo board, cachepots, postcard holder etc; Chapter 4: Over the weekend: these include a journal, topsy-turvey doll, wall clock, tea cozy; Chapter 5: As long as it takes - garden throw, craft cabinet, hooked rug, memory album, friendship quilt)

The end of the book has sources, glossary and patterns.

There are lots of pictures (color) throughout, great stories of friends doing things together, good instructions.

Super book - makes a great gift to a friend as well

5 out of 5 stars craft projects to share.......2002-05-24

I got a belated birthday present from a friend last week, Between Friends by Charlotte Lyons. What a wonderful surprise. Charlotte Lyons has made several craft books on different topics. This one is about projects you can share with friends. What about starting a craft group with some good friends or giving away a small hand made gift when you go for a visit or enclosing some fabric in a letter for a dear friend. The book gives alot of creative and great suggestions.

I have done all this, and still do. As a matter of fact, the friend who gave me the book and I have shared so many crafty projects over the years. There really are no limits in what you can do. And as it's said on the cover of the book - in an era when women set aside very little leisure time for themselves, let alone for their friends, Between Friends provides the perfect excuse to invite the girls over.

The great thing about this book is that Charlotte Lyons has collected so many different things you can do, and put them together in a charming and quite whimsical way. Don't start reading the book late in the night. You will never be able to go to bed then untill you have started a new project, phoned a friend to discuss some new yarn you saw in town earlier that day, or written a letter to a pinpal with pictures of some of your latest quilts.

The book will be a favorite of mine for years to come, and I know it will inspire me to make wonderful gifts for and with my friends from all over the world. And a little secret. MY Between Friends has a little handmade bookmark, embroidered with the words"If friends were flowers, I'd pick you" - made special for me by my special sharing friend.

Charlotte Lyons has a real gift for creating something wonderful out of basic odds and ends. And her newest book, Between Friends, offers inspiration galore. Whether you have friends to share the craft projects with or simply want to escape the daily routine by making something alone this book is a fabulous resource. The instructions are very clear and the projects are cleverly organized by the amount of time they take. A great gift idea too.

                  4 out of 5 stars CS BOOK.......2005-08-09

Solid book on CS- long read!
                  Many good points-
Wish there was a cliff notes version

5 out of 5 stars The book that was missing.......2004-09-08

This book fills in the empty space of academic books in CRM. Most of the publications and articles I've read deal with research on the subject and companies selling their programs. In this book Peppers and Rogers compiled a comprehensive text with theory, research and contributions from other authors that are a valuable tool for the under and graduate level.

                  5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-08-06

This very extensive text on customer relationship management leaves nothing unsaid or unexplained. Authors and editors Don Peppers and Martha Rogers tackle the subject with admirable organization, clarity and depth. They define every important term and do not lose the reader in marketing jargon - a rare virtue in a book about marketing. The text, including contributions from other well-known experts in the field, propounds a well-developed theory of customer relationship management (CRM) and sets out numerous examples to illustrate, explain and clarify the theory. Useful as a handbook, textbook or reference manual, the book covers - among many other core subjects - customer identification and differentiation, customer feedback, an analysis of retailing and basic tools for CRM. We highly recommend this book to service-oriented managers and executives. To form profitable relationships with your customers, first get friendly with Peppers and Rogers.

                  5 out of 5 stars Taking One-to-One marketing to the CEO's agenda.......2004-07-28

Having just finalised an e-business thesis on Online Personalization, I must say that this book is an impressive source on the strategic level for what is synonymously called CRM, One-to-One marketing, relationship marketing, etc.

What I like about Peppers & Rogers is that they don't pretend to be the only ones to have seen this shift in customer-focused organizations (although they were first-movers in US by coining the term One-to-One in 1993). Peppers & Rogers accept readily that many other people have interesting perspectives to add. Thus, this book includes many contributions from marketing wizards like Philip Kotler, Seth Godin, Bruce Kasanoff, and Patricia Seybold.

The book is the sixth from the authors. If you have read some of the previous publications, you'll already be familiar with their core concepts like the IDIC-model (Identify-Differentiate-Interact-Customize), as well as Learning Relationships and customer Lifetime Value.

I believe that Peppers & Rogers' most important contribution is to change a company's focus from customer acquisition to customer retention. That is: Stop spending all you money getting new customers and start spending more on keeping and growing existing customers. This is where the learning relationships come in. The basic idea of Managing Customer Relationships, the authors concisely describe in plain English:

The Learning Relationships work like this: If you're my customer and I get you to talk to me, and I remember what you tell me, then I get smarter and smarter about you. I know something about you my competitors don't know. So I can do things for you my competitors can't do, because they don't know you as well as I do. Before long, you can get something from me you can't get anywhere else, for any price. At the very least, you'd have to start all over somewhere else, but starting over is more costly than staying with me.

Being a Dane, I'm proud to see the reference made on page 172 that the relationship theory can be traced back to the Scandinavian School of Relationships Management (e.g. Gronroos and Gummeson). Back in the 1980's, both were required reading in Scandinavian business schools. They often researched service firms and B2B-networks and based on this knowledge, they emphasised the contents and types of the business relationships and the required strategies to make these relationships work. It wasn't until the 1990's that CRM-initiatives took off in the United States - and usually they have been very technology-driven. Today, we all accept that you need both the relationship mindset and the technology-enabler. So the two approaches may ultimately achieve the same goals.

5 out of 5 stars Don and Martha Do It Again!.......2004-05-25

Another stellar effort by the pioneers of one-to-one. This book tackles CRM on several different fronts, and includes thoughtful pieces from a range of expert contributors. The book features both tactics and theory, including a helpful history on the emergence of CRM as a major business philosophy and some of the original research behind relationship theory. A hefty reference, and a useful one!
