Book Description
In recent years, transportation research has seen a gradual shift from trip-based, via tour-based to activity-based models, in an effort to capture the true complexity of travel behaviour.
This volume reflects an eventful decade of development and application of activity-based models. In three extensive sections, it:
- reviews a range of approaches to incorporating increased complexity in models;
- discusses how to obtain the rich data necessary to support complex models;
- and reports on real applications in action.
Essential reading for any researcher or practitioner wishing to keep abreast of this key area of transportation research.

James J Hill & Opening of Northwest (Borealis Books)
ASIN: 089499025X |
Book Description
From the time he was 18 in St. Paul, James J. Hill (1838-1916) dreamed of a ship and rail bridge to the riches of the mysterious Orient. Through a succession of jobs, he absorbed every detail of moving goods by land and by water, which contributed to the excellent management and low-cost operation of his railroad empire. He made financial history by shaping the Northern Securities Co., a holding device dissolved by the Supreme Court in 1904. As founder of the Great Northern Railway, Hill was an American railroad icon and one of Ayn Rand's industrialist heroes. After his retirement, he wrote "Highways of Progress," originally published in 1910, and toured the country speaking about the virtues of capitalism and a hard work ethic. Near the end of his life, James J. Hill was asked by a newspaper reporter to reveal the secret of his success. Hill responded with characteristic bluntness, "Work, hard work, intelligent work, and then more work." Hill became a pivotal force in the transformation of the Northwest as his railroad served as the backbone of American settlement, agricultural development and commercial expansion.

Book Description
First Edition
When Edward Ardizzone passed away in 1979, he was one of the best-loved artists (and authors)in the English speaking world. He illustrated more than 200 books and pamphlets, a good number of which he also wrote, as well as designed dust jackets and ephemera for a range of patrons. Brian Alderson first published a checklist of this work in The Private Library in 1972. Since then, with the co-operation of the artist and his family, he has extended and expanded the coverage of the original list, describing for the first time in a full-scale bibliography Ardizzone's books, dustjackets, commercial work, and ephemera, with notes on his periodical contributions, war art, prints, posters, and bookplates. Appendices reprint articles by Ardizzone himself and detail the history of two favorite titles - Peacock Pie and Peter Pan- and reproduce Gabriel White's memorial tribute to the artist. Co-published with The British Library.

The life and career of one of the most formidable women in Hollywood.
Customer Reviews:
About time there was a Demi bio written.......2000-10-11
Even though, as Mr.Goodall says himself, Demi didn't authorise the book and take an active part in the writing of it, he still managed to sum up her career and in some respect capture her personality with, I think, admirable accuracy. You might think that with the track record of Demi in the press, and her not actually partaking in it, it would not be a very objective book in the sense that Demi has always been slandered, or praised beyond mere mortal status. But to me this book is as true to the facts as can be, or seems to be anyway. I don't know Demi, and I don't pretend to either, but the image I have conjured in my mind seems to fit rather nicely with the one Goodall has drawn up. So Either I am way off base, or he has indeed captured the "real" Demi Moore without succumbing to the notion that stars are not just regular people, and need to be described with that little extra... After all, they're stars, right? There are a few things in here that I particularly like, but I won't dwell on them here. Suffice it to say that regardless of whether you want to find out more about Demi, or just look at some glossy pics of her - this book is probably for you.
Book Description
A national bestseller, Snobbery examines the discriminating qualities in all of us. With dishy detail, Joseph Epstein skewers all manner of elitism in contemporary America. He offers his arch observations of the new footholds of snobbery: food, fashion, high-achieving children, schools, politics, being with-it, name-dropping, and much more. Clever, incisive, and immensely entertaining, Snobberyexplores the shallows and depths of status and taste -- with enviable results.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting topic. There are not many books written about Snobbery in all it forms........2006-11-06
We've all experienced snobbery in one form or another. Its interesting to see the categories of snobbery broken down.
Joseph Epstein has an insight and intelligence I have not experienced before, reading his books is like being let in on the secrets of human interaction in its many forms.
Even better than "Snobbery", in my opinion is his book "Friendship: An Expose".
Looking in the Mirror.......2006-08-27
I loved this book! Criticized for being entertaining...as if this were a bad thing and mutually exclusive with being informative...I enjoyed chuckling along with Epstein, who openly shares his snobbery, while also deepening my understanding of snobbery in my life and in America.
Epstein has it right when he says that snobbery is a result of a fear that we are not enough. And, of course, the culture we live in goes to any lengths to reinforce those fears. The ongoing anxiety of "trying to get it right" would be hilarious if it were not for the outcomes of this way of living: cruelty to others, debt, domestic violence, mistrust of each other, depression, and spiritual disconnection .....to name a few.
For more information on this topic, there is a wonderful PBS documentary from a few years ago, PEOPLE LIKE US, which still has a web site with fun, informative quizzes etc. for kids & adults.
Simply annoying........2006-07-22
To mimic a sentence structure that Mr. Epstein employs ad nauseum throughout his book, a perfect storm of smug vapidness, this. The author seems to think that he can innoculate himself against the charge of being a snob himself, by admitting to it once in a while. Fair enough. But it doesn't keep him from coming off as mean (as in his treatment of the author Phyllis Rose--how ironic that he would talk about her coming across as a snob in her wonderful memoir!) and judgemental (as in his treatment of vegetarians whom, and he annoyingly waffles on this one, he seems to conclude are a self-righteous lot who has made throwing dinner parties a nuisance).
Mr. Epstein is at his worst when he goes on about his fascination with fashionable coats and cigarette lighters. Boring. And pitiable, really.
Sorry, but Mr. Epstein's own glaring snobbery overshadows this book of warmed over observations on the subject.
An enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.......2006-05-24
This is a delightful, refreshing, and strangely insightful book. What it lacks in scope and grandeur it makes up for in readability. I'd recommend it to anyone who has been on either end of the snobbery spectrum...or perhaps to anyone who has ever spent the odd moment pondering this odd, yet irrepressible, part of human nature.
The Snobbery snob already knew all this.......2005-10-10
Epstein covers many areas exhaustively, showing just how many different ways you could be a snob in regards to: food, family, money, career, material items, name dropping, schooling, clubs, intelligence, race, religion, politics, and more. Though Epstein explains at the beginning that he is merely trying to share with the reader his own faults of snobbery, at times it comes across as his genuinely being a snob! Though I suppose it is probably hard to be specific about, say, names you namedrop, without actually namedropping.
Some of the tidbits were good, but overall the book was rather uninteresting.

Updated to cover version 2.4.x of the Linux kernel, the second edition of Linux Device Drivers remains the best general-purpose, paper-bound guide for programmers wishing to make hardware devices work under the world's most popular open-source operating system. The authors take care to show how to write drivers that are portable--that is, that compile and run under all popular Linux platforms. That, along with the fact that they're careful to explain and illustrate concepts, makes this book very well suited to any programmer familiar with C but not with the hardware-software interface. It's worth noting that the emphasis in the title is on "device drivers" as much as "Linux." This book will make sense to you if you've never written a driver for any platform before. It helps if you have some Linux or Unix background, but even that is secondary as a prerequisite to C skill.
For a programming text--and one concerned with low-level instructions and data structures, at that--this book is remarkably rich in prose. You'll typically want to read this book straight through, more or less skipping the code samples, before sketching out your plan for the driver you need to write. Then, go back and pay closer attention to the sections on specific details you need to implement, like custom task queues. For coding-time details about specific system calls and programming techniques, count on the index to point you to the right passages. --David Wall
Topics covered: Techniques for writing hardware device drivers that run under Linux kernels 2.0.x through 2.2.x. Sections show how to manage memory, time, interrupts, ports, and other details of the hardware-software interface.
Book Description
Device drivers literally drive everything you're interested in--disks, monitors, keyboards, modems--everything outside the computer chip and memory. And writing device drivers is one of the few areas of programming for the Linux operating system that calls for unique, Linux-specific knowledge. For years now, programmers have relied on the classic Linux Device Drivers from O'Reilly to master this critical subject. Now in its third edition, this bestselling guide provides all the information you'll need to write drivers for a wide range of devices. Over the years the book has helped countless programmers learn:
- how to support computer peripherals under the Linux operating system
- how to develop and write software for new hardware under Linux
- the basics of Linux operation even if they are not expecting to write a driver
The new edition of Linux Device Drivers is better than ever. The book covers all the significant changes to Version 2.6 of the Linux kernel, which simplifies many activities, and contains subtle new features that can make a driver both more efficient and more flexible. Readers will find new chapters on important types of drivers not covered previously, such as consoles, USB drivers, and more. Best of all, you don't have to be a kernel hacker to understand and enjoy this book. All you need is an understanding of the C programming language and some background in Unix system calls. And for maximum ease-of-use, the book uses full-featured examples that you can compile and run without special hardware. Today Linux holds fast as the most rapidly growing segment of the computer market and continues to win over enthusiastic adherents in many application areas. With this increasing support, Linux is now absolutely mainstream, and viewed as a solid platform for embedded systems. If you're writing device drivers, you'll want this book. In fact, you'll wonder how drivers are ever written without it.
Customer Reviews:
Best Linux 2.4 Device Driver Book.......2007-01-25
Used this to write my first linux driver on my own with no help. Great book, great layout, very well written. I have not read all of the 3rd Edition, since I am now working on Solaris, and did not work on the 2.6 kernel, but would assume thats good as well.
Good overview of linux device driver programming concepts.......2006-12-07
This book takes a hypothetical device driver and explains the concepts nicely. It provides various fundamentals one needs to know before writing linux device drivers, and valuable information like concurrent and race conditions, and gives ideas for debugging problems in real drivers. It is worth read and I liked it. I had already some experience in kernel programming before reading this book, and it filled holes in my kernel knowledge. This book is also available online[...] and you may check yourself before buying this.
The objections made by other reviewers fall into the following two classes. Once you are a experienced hacker, all you need is kernel sources (books are for fundamentals only and become obsolete as new kernel constructs are added). If you are looking for cut and paste template code to add new driver for another device, again use kernel source of an existing driver.
Good reference on Linux subsystems, not a book for starters.......2006-10-13
This book is not for Linux (kernel) newbies but for those who already know their way around the kernel and seek detailed info on certain parts of it. This book has some good overviews on different subsystems of the Linux kernel. Some sections, like USB, have been expanded since the second edition of this book. I would have liked to see a section on the new 2.6 scheduler.
If you want to start off with Linux kernel programming, I would recommend Linux Kernel Development by Robert Love. These books, together with articles on the web, should certainly help anyone interested.
Not useful for a normal coder looking to learn Unix drivers........2006-08-02
If you are trying to learn how to write Linux Device drivers from scratch, this is probably not the book for you. I believe I am somewhat C/C++ savvy, and I expect sample code that is less than 10 lines of code to compile correctly.
The sample code did not compile, and although the book has a lot of tidbits of good information, overall it is not very useful for a developer.
