I'm really surprised at all the positive reviews this got. She did give some guidelines which are nice, but I found it very hard to drum up much sympathy for the author, who seemed very full of herself and self-focussed. Her life was, in general, not a struggle; she seemed to get everything she wanted easily and more than most people can dream of getting. She had a few bumps and now she's back on track and that's why she wrote the book. I would not recommend it.

After reading the article about Ms. Whaley in the April 2006 issue of Black Enterprise Magazine, I immediately bought and read her book. I could not put the book down. Whaley tells a story that most of us can identify with. I was so inspired by her book. She difinitely sparked me to re-evaluate my own choices and start living my life for me and not everyone else. I recommend this book to everyone.

I read about Lisa in the September issue of Essence Magazine and immediately bought the book. I was so moved by her story. This is a book that is a must read for everyone.

I read this week over a weekend. It was funny, moving and inspirational. So much to learn from... thank you!

Lots of things you will think about as you read this book. Most women will probably see themselves in parts of this story. This woman took her life back and it took a lot of courage. A terrific read. Enjoyed it very much.

Steve Redgrave is an amazing rower. We get to learn something about the cost of his unparalleled Olympic achievements. But this is not a dramatic book, rather a somewhat rambling memoir, transcribed by Redgrave's cowriter.

If you're a huge Redgrave fan, rowing fanatic, or Olympic sport freak, get it. If you want to learn how to row, buy Redgrave's Complete Book of Rowing (or better yet, Frank Cunningham's Sculler at Ease, which covers sweeps too). If you want Olympic drama, buy The Amateurs by Halberstam or Assault on Lake Casitas by Brad Lewis.

        Book Description

Given the ways in which spirituality functions in the work of such Black women writers and filmmakers as Toni Morrison, Ntozake Shange, Maya Angelou, Julie Dash, and Euzhan Palcy, Judylyn Ryan proposes in this challenging new study that what these women embrace in their narrative construction and characterization is the role and responsibility of the priestess, bearing and distributing "life-force" to sustain the community of people who read and view their work. Central to these women's vision of transformation is what Ryan calls a paradigm of growth and an ethos of interconnectedness, which provide interpretive models for examining and teaching a broad range of artistic, cultural, and social texts.

The focus on theology provides a new way of viewing the connections among New World African diaspora religious traditions, challenging the widespread and reductive assumption that Afro-Christianity shares no philosophical commonalities with Santería, Candomblé, Voodun, and other traditions that are not christological.

In addition to exploring spirituality as epistemology, the book also provides an intertextual reading of Black women's literary and film texts that examines the ways in which these works expose, mediate, and interpret the cultural, social, and historical conditions surrounding their production. While most discussions of lack women's engagement with, and contribution to, the discursive space of the culture assume an oppositional or reactive stance, Ryan argues that the disposition reflected in the texts she examines tends to be relational and proactive, conferring an autonomy that the gravitational pull between opposites lacks. This intertextual reading constitutes a multimedia auteur criticism of a collective artistic vision.

        Book Description

This book explores the interface between law and popular culture, two subjects of enormous current importance and influence. Exploring how they affect each other, each chapter discusses a legally themed film or television show, such as Philadelphia or Dead Man Walking, and treats it as both a cultural and a legal text, illustrating how popular culture both constructs our perceptions of law, and changes the way that players in the legal system behave. Written without theoretical jargon, Law and Popular Culture: A Course Book is intended for use in undergraduate or graduate courses and can be taught by anyone who enjoys pop culture and is interested in law.

4 out of 5 stars Law and Popular Culture, mistitled yet momentous.......2006-11-14

We used Law and Popular Culture as one of several texts in an undergraduate class I am taking entitled, "Law and Society." If the prospective buyer of this text is interested in its substantive content, then he or she should be forewarned that Law and Popular Culture should, more appropriately, be entitled Law in Films. Though its authors acknowledge the pervasiveness and varied nature of popular culture as a whole in their "Preface," including in this designation "films, television shows, books, songs, advertisements, and numerous other imaginative texts," they choose to focus solely on films--13 specific films, to be exact. That being said, the book is incredibly informative, as Mr. Doherty attests, for students of either film or of law. More important, Law & Popular Culture would serve any student of both law and film particularly well, as its authors' critiques of its thirteen films are made with an interdisciplinary acumen.

The book is divided into three major sections: "Law, Lawyers, and the Legal System," "Criminal Justice," and "Civil Justice." In each section, chapters focus on a particular theme and explore said theme by way of analysis of a particular movie, likewise headlining the chapter. Thus, Chapter 3, "Lawyers as Heroes," explores the hero character of Atticus Finch in the chapter's assigned film, To Kill a Mockingbird; Chapter 4, "Lawyers as Villains," limelights the film The Verdict, and so forth.

In this way, the text is structured such that an instructor could easily create a course with Law and Popular Culture as its primary text, showing or assigning each of the thirteen movies that Asinmow & Mader analyze, which each headline a specific theme. The downside to this, as other reviewers have mentioned, is that the text is somewhat useless to a reader who has not previously viewed the movies that Law and Popular Culture considers. Moreover, for the creation of a course that actually intends to delve into law and popular culture as an overall theme, Asinmow & Mader's work is lacking in that its analysis is not complemented by an overarching synthesis on the subjects of its title.

Included in most chapters are snippets of historical data surrounding the creation of the film, tangential discussions of related historical figures, and technocratic terminologies relating to film production. While Law and Popular Culture does not completely serve the purposes of a student of law as it is portrayed in popular culture, these tangents provide a meager substitute for broad-based analysis of popular culture's portrayal of law as a whole by providing a brief and detailed window into the popular culture surrounding the creation of a chapter's headline film.

All in all, Asinmow's and Mader's text is one of significant synthesis with a misnomer for a title, as it at worst adequately and at best wonderfully explores specific films with law-related subject matter.

A student can take away a lot from this book, whether they are a student of film or a student of law, but sometimes the information presented in this book will only interest a student of one or the other. I recommend it for students who are interested specifically in the intersection of law and culture, but are deeply engaged in both, who have a desire to consider both issues related to filmmaking and specifics of the law.
As an undergraduate political science student, I found the discussion of law in the film specifically useful. Yet, I found some of the descriptions of filmmaking techniques mildly interesting, rather technical, and not wonderfully useful for my purposes. For example, in the second chapter, the authors discuss long takes and deep focus in Anatomy of a Murder. This did not seem particularly useful to me. Though film students may find this section useful, they might not find the extended sections on law as useful. These sections are able to be more detailed as one of the writers, Michael Asimov, is a Professor of Law and the other, Shannon Mader, is a scholar of film. Since this book provides information for students of two different studies, the book in its entirety will only apply to a small niche of students, but is still a useful source for students of either field.
The authors thus divide the book into short numbered sections throughout each chapter. This has its pros and cons, since it helps the reader pick out that from the book that may be of interest to them, but it also gives the book a disjointed feel. It lacks flow as it quickly moves from one barely related section to another. An overarching argument of a chapter is sacrificed for breadth and diversity of information.
Each chapter emphasizes a specific film that fits the topic, such as Anatomy of a Murder for "The Adversary System and the Courtroom Genre," or Philadelphia for "Civil Rights." One gets a lot less out of the chapter if she or he has not seen the related film. There are thirteen different films and it is likely the reader will not have seen all of them. Hence the reading experience will be much enhanced if the reader is using the book with a class where the films will be shown or if the student has access to the films.
There is a good deal of fascinating material in this book that may not be closely related to the topic, but is worth reading and becoming engaged in. Specifically, sections of race in film and the section on the Hays Code are interesting in ways not necessarily connected with the intersection of popular culture in the form of film and law. Some readers may see these as tangents, but I found them as quite useful, even if distantly connected and not fully addressing the issue at hand.
This book is a useful resource, but mostly useful for a small niche of students. If you are interested in both law and filmmaking, than this is a book should check out, especially if it is connected through a class that will let you view the films as you go through the films.

In the last fifteen years there has been a proliferation of courses in law schools dealing with law and lawyers and their place in popular culture as defined primarily by motion pictures and television programming.

Last year, a colleague of mine at the Catholic University School of Law and I began to put together a film course focusing on Hollywood''s view of Lawyers and the lawyering process. We knew that there were law review articles that discussed some of the films we had chosen for the class but not all. Moreover, we could not find a good text that discussed the overarching themes of the lawyer''s place in the culture and how lay people viewed individual lawyers and their work.

I called Michael Asimov at UCLA School of Law, who I knew to be one of the gurus in the law and popular culture movement and co-author of Reel Justice, to see if he was aware of a suitable text. I had come to the right place because Mike and a colleague, Shannon Mader, had just completed the manuscript of Law and Popular Culture: A Course Book and he was willing to let me use the book in manuscript form.

The book was perfect for our needs. While we did not assign readings from every chapter, we leaned heavily on material that provided a strong rationale for the course, discussed legal education in a way that gave new insights to our students regarding what they were doing in law school and how they will relate to society and presented overarching themes tying together and analyzing particular movie genres such as lawyers as villains (chapter 4); unethical law firms (chapter 13) and lawyers as vehicles for social messages (chapter 3). Helpfully, the authors intersperse real world relevant information and observations in boxes throughout the text.

This work provided the intellectual backbone for our course and encouraged the students to view the chosen films and the legal profession in the broader context of our society and culture. The authors can take a bow for their contribution to the understanding of law, lawyers and lawyering. I recommend this text to any instructor teaching a course involving legal films or television series involving attorneys.

        Book Description

The Sicilian Defense is the most popular chess opening at every level of tournament play. Here, a multinational lineup of leading experts gives recommendations against their own pet lines in the Sicilian Defense. The authors are are all either Grandmasters or International Masters, and readers now have a complete guide to playing with White against the Sicilian.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars excellent content.......2007-03-12

I really like this eclectic approach to examining a rich opening such as the sicilian. The content is excellent!

Understandably there is a difference in the style and readabilty of the chapters. This book would make a good exemplar for grandmasters to see what works and and doesn't work when presenting information. For example the dragon chapter goes for a maze of annotations that is best left for daytime reading for those of us with failing sight. The accelerated dragon chapter is better paragraphed and not in the 'throw the kitchen sink' at them style. The publishers could also consider a stronger font for main lines.

That said, it is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, recently updated version of a chess repertoire book against the Sicilian.......2007-03-01

I've always liked the Open Sicilian for White. If you want to know why, you can read some of my other Amazon reviews, especially the one of Emms' book ("Starting Out: The Sicilian"). In general, I think the lines are much easier for White than for Black. Still, there's a need for a good repertoire book for White in the Open Sicilian and this work fills that need superbly.

We start with the Najdorf Variation (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6). Here, Thomas Luther recommends 6 Bg5 for White and I strongly agree. I like to be able to exchange that Bishop (which otherwise often just gets in White's way) for the Black Knight on f6. Luther has some good recommendations against Black sidelines (including the Polugayevsky and the Poisoned Pawn variations). In the main line (6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 Be7 8 Qf3 Qc7 9 0-0-0 Nbd7) Luther recommends 10 g4, which is a good move. But he also advises knowing the 10 Bd3 lines, and I think that's wise. In one sideline, Luther comments that the opening "has been a disaster for Black. This position holds no chances for a win, and the draw is not as close as it would have been had he played a passive variation of the Petroff." That's exactly the sort of position we want to see as White! In this chapter, we are shown some classical White sacrifices, such as Bxb5 or Nd5, and these are fundamental concepts that White has to learn.

Next is the Dragon Variation, where Black plays 5 ...g6 rather than the 5 ...a6 of the Najdorf. Objectively, the strongest line for White is 6 Be3 Bg7 7 f3 (to prevent Ng4 by Black) 7...0-0 8 Qd2 Nc6 9 0-0-0, and that's what Michael Golubev recommends. Black can postpone ...0-0, but Golubev shows that leaving the King in the center indefinitely does not work for Black. In the main line, Black has to face a very dangerous Kingside attack.

        After that comes Jacob Aagard's chapter on the Sveshnikov (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 e5 6 Ndb5 d6 7 Bg5 a6 8 Na3 b5). Once again, we the recommendation is to play a main line: 9 Bxf6 gxf6 10 Nd5 f5 11 c3. In the past, I've preferred to sacrifice on b5 on move 11, but Aagard has convinced me that the 11 c3 line is very powerful.

        Against the Classical Sicilian (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 Nc6), Peter Wells recommends the very reasonable Richter-Rauzer attack with 6 Bg5. That's not exactly what I play, but I think it is an excellent suggestion.

Sune Berg Hansen deals with the Kan (Paulsen) and Taimanov variations. Against the Kan, we are encouraged to play 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 a6 5 Nc3 followed by 6 Bd3, which I am considering switching to from my Maroczy-bind (5 c4) approach. Against the Taimanov, we're taught an extremely aggressive line that requires plenty of work for both sides: 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nc6 5 Nc3 Qc7 6 Be3 a6 7 Bd3, but so far I think I prefer the Maroczy bind here. Still, I like the fact that this repertoire book does offer us such a strong attacking line.

When we get to the Accelerated Dragon, Peter Heine Nielsen can find nothing better to recommend than the Maroczy Bind. I think he's right, and he gives us an excellent lesson on how to play it. As he shows, Black's dream position is to trade off all the minor pieces except for a Black Knight (which will wind up on d4) and White's White-squared Bishop. White tends to be ripped in such a position, and we learn to avoid it at all costs. We also see that if all the minor pieces are exchanged, White typically has a winning advantage.

What about the Scheveningen? Viktor Gavrikov recommends the aggressive Keres attack (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 e6 6 g4). This is dangerous for both sides, of course. I've tried this line for White, and I confess that I'm always a little nervous about winding up with my Bishop misplaced on e3. Still, I think that the Keres attack is in keeping with the overall theme of the book.

        In the Kalashnikov, Jan Pinski recommends a "minor line." The idea is after 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 e5 5 Nb5 d6 6 N1c3 a6 7 Na3 b5 to play 8 Nd5, 9 exd5, and 10 c4 (or the same moves in a different order). Once again, this line is very dangerous for Black, which is what we want.

The book concludes with some less popular versions of the Sicilian. Alexander Raetsky supplies a line against the Sicilian Four Knights, Jacob Aagard against the Pin Variation and the Nimzowitsch variation, John Shaw against some remaining minor lines, and finally Aagard (once again) on three Black fifth move alternatives.

This book is highly readable, up-to-date, and I highly recommend it. I hope you will all try the Open Sicilian as White! I'm sure glad that I play it.

3 out of 5 stars Experts Vs. the Sicilian.......2007-02-16

Certainly an in depth book on the sicilian, but the commentary is sparse in spots and leaves the reader to draw his or her's own conclusion far too often. Also as with any popular theoretical opening, keeping current with a book in today's internet world is difficult at best.

4 out of 5 stars Repetoire vs the sicilian.......2005-10-21

An advanced book on combating the sicilian as white. It is impossible to come up with a comprehensive book on the open sicilian in less than 300 pages, but the authors do a reasonable job. Not an easy book to get through, but if you are willing to put in the work, this is a rewarding book.

4 out of 5 stars Solid open sicilian repertoire.......2005-09-25

As all reviews, this is highly subjective...It's been some years since a repertoire book on standard open sicilan lines was out (not counting "Taming the sicilian" which I haven't seen but wouldn't count as standard with all g3 lines) so this book definitely fills a void. Its main strength, having more or less expert IMs and GMs recommend against their pet lines, may be at the same time a weakness. The various chapter are not of the same quality. Some chapters on sidelines (pin variation etc) are as long as mainline chapters. The variations are presented through complete games, which may not be to everybody's liking. You still have to learn hefty amounts of theory, for example in the Bg5 Najdorf, Richter-Rauzer and 0-0-0 Dragon.
Having said that, I think any serious 1.e4 player who wants to play the open sicilian will benefit from this book. You may want to pick and choose what you play - for instance, I have given serious thought to Sozin lines instead of Bg5. Also, check the publisher's website - there are some updates you can download on PGN format.
Some ommisions and the differences in character and quality between the different chapters account for the four stars.

4 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2004-02-17

At weLEAD we naturally receive hundreds of books on the subject of leadership from virtually every perspective and approach. We will give Leadership Presence credit for a truly novel and effective approach. Unlike most leadership authors Belle Linda Halpren and Kathy Lubar do not come from a strictly business school, military or academic background. It may be the very reason why this book is so enjoyable to read! The authors are highly skilled actresses and taught acting skills in Repertory Theater. Many of the students they had were various professionals including teachers, doctors, businesspeople and others. Because these individuals were able to use the theatre skills they acquired effectively in the workplace, the authors founded the Ariel Group in 1992. Since that time the Ariel Group has presented workshops to over 30,000 executives. This book is a result of that effort and the results achieved.

The main theme of Leadership Presence is simple yet profound. The authors define Leadership Presence as the "ability to connect authentically with the thoughts and feelings of others in order to motivate and inspire them to achieve a desired outcome". Throughout the book you will find a special emphasis on the word "authentic". This is not a book about motivating or manipulating others by using acting skills or pretence. It is a book that focuses on learning to authentically connect with the minds and hearts of others to effectively lead. Far too many business leaders conduct themselves in ways they think their executive roles require, rather than being themselves based on their heartfelt values. The result is that they come across as inauthentic and this breeds a lack of trust. The authors spend an admirable amount on the importance of values and introduce the reader to what they call the PRES Model of Leadership Presence.

Leadership Presence was written to teach techniques that will help the leader to motivate, inspire and reach out to others. It will help the reader to enhance relationships, build collaboration and flexibly deal with challenging situations. The book is composed of nine chapters divided into four sections suitably called "Acts". Act I discusses how one can learn to be completely in the moment. Act II analyzes the skills available to build relationships. Act III examines the appropriate way to express emotions and feelings. Act IV focuses on being yourself and reflecting your values in your behavior. Most chapters end with a section on exercises or practice guidelines to cement the information taught in the preceding chapter. Numerous personal stories and examples provided by the authors keep the material interesting and practical.

If you are new to the study of leadership you will enjoy this book. If you have read dozens of books on the study of leadership, you will love this book because it views this complex subject from a truly innovative and helpful angle. Sometimes we can get so immersed in a subject we can't "see the forest for the trees". Leadership Presence is one of those unique books that will help you to step back and see the forest because it gets to the very heart of leadership...authentic behavior and values.

5 out of 5 stars Fills a deep gap in leadership literature.......2003-11-17

Why is it when some actors take the stage they automatically command the attention of the audience? It doesn't matter if they are not the most important part of the scene - they still command the audience's attention even when in the background. These people have a sense of presence; their very being and bearing demands respect. That ability to command respect is what this book is about. How does a real leader create this sense of presence such that he or she automatically has the attention and respect of those they lead?

The authors define presence as "the ability to connect authentically with the thoughts and feelings of others". While business has generally ignored this sense of presence and assumed that people will be led simply because they are employees, the acting profession lives or dies by this sense of presence. Business is now struggling to create loyal employees who think for theirselves and have a sense of being a part of a larger community. Business is looking for great leaders.

To help find or create these great leaders there has been a plethora of books about the attributes of great leaders; they communicate well, they treat others as important, etc. The difference between most management or leadership books and this one can best be illustrated by the art of dance. A good dancer can be mechanically perfect. Every twist, every turn, every leap is exactly as it should be, but still the dance is boring. On the other hand a dancer who truly feels and moves to the music as it were a part of their self creates a thing of beauty to see. That is where this book differentiates itself from the other books on leadership. The others are typically descriptions of what makes good leaders - the mechanics of the perfect dance. This book helps the leader to establish a sense of presence that in turn causes a sense of immediate respect in others - the dancer who feels the music.

At the end of each chapter are exercises to help the reader to learn to apply the lessons. The authors fill a deep chasm in management theory with this book. "Leadership Presence: Dramatic Techniques to Reach Out, Motivate and Inspire" is a highly recommended read and required reading for those in leadership positions of any kind.

        5 out of 5 stars A gem.......2003-11-13

I found "Leadership presence" to be very inspiring not only for leaders and managers but for every human being engaged in the business of life! As a teacher, mother and grand-mother, I am using some of the skills offered in the book with my students and family and finding them more than useful: profound. This book is not just another "how to" book, it comes from deeper waters of presence and compassion. Plus it is fun to read, full of great stories. A gem.

5 out of 5 stars Leadership Presence has something for everyone.......2003-11-01

I found the highly readable Leadership Presence to be satisfying on many levels. It is enjoyable to read, with many grippping stories that support the authors' discussion of what makes an effective leader. It feels useable, as it has practical applications listed at the end of each chapter, written clearly as exercizes that anyone could do. The authors have a great deal of experience working with a wide variety of buisnesses, large and small, and they draw from this wealth of experience in presenting their innovative approach to the art of leadership.
This book outlines the principles of acting and applies them to what it takes to be an effective leader; even more, on what it takes to be an effective person in any realm in communicating with others. I related strongly to the ideas in this book -- as a drama teacher, as one who works with middle schoolers and a community of teachers and parents, and even as a mother of two daughters. Even though I was familiar with many of the ideas that related to acting, I saw these ideas presented in a different context, and I believe the book will be a great reference for me in work and in the rest of my life. I plan to give a copy to my middle school principal, and to my rabbi--as I was reading, I thought of many people who would enjoy and benefit from this book. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Try To Put It Down!.......2003-10-30

The first few paragraphs of the Foreword by Warren Bennis tip you off that Leadership Presence is an unusual and heady business leadership book.

Authors Halpern and Lubar are convincing and clear. Their anecdote-filled guide is profound without being heavy or treacly. Leadership Presence offers meaty chapters and practical exercises that are fun and helpful to readers, suggestive of the benefits to corporate groups who take Ariel Group seminars - and often keep coming back for more.

Halpern and Lubar are classy and serious with just enough humor to make this different self-improvement book an exhilarating read. Inspiring, almost like a novel with characters you care about, Leadership Presence is amazing. You won't be able to put it down.
