I bought this book for my dad for Christmas. I remember stories he would tell of Dorothy and his visits to her cabin while up in the Boundary Waters. I can't wait to hear his reaction to the book. My dad is in his 80's now and no longer can travel to the North country.

I have been going to the BWCAW for the past three years. Reading this story just brings back all of the memories that I have been collecting over the last 3 years. Reading this book you can take yourself back to the wilderness area by moose lake, ensign lake and farther north to knife lake. It's a beautiful area that all should visit.

Dorothy Molter was an independent woman who managed to live her dream in one of the most beautiful and serene wilderness areas in the world. In her cabin on a lake in the boundary waters canoe area, she lived alone and in harmony with nature. Thirsty canoe travelers would stop by to visit Dorothy and she offered them root beer, which she bottled herself. This is an inspiring, true story of independent living; highly recommended to anyone who has ever dreamed of living in the woods.

Root Beer Lady is the story of Dorothy Moulter, a woman who moved from depression era Chicago to the Northwoods of Minnesota. If you've ever visited, or read about, Ely Minnesota, doubtless you've heard a little about her.
Although the story is interesting for the most part it does drag a bit in some areas. I found it pretty fascinating though. Kinda makes you want to pack everything up, and move to the middle of no-where.

Gentrification and the City.......2006-07-25
Fantastic book centering on the gentrification of Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Wicker Park, the once blight and gritty hood that attracted artists and other creatives due to cheap rents and proximity to the Loop, has become one of the hippest areas of the country by way of aspiring artists, rising musicians, and a healthy design commerce. "Neo-Bohemia" gives a somewhat detailed history of Wicker Park and insightful interviews with it's residents (not the yuppies thats have invaded the neighborhood) on their coined "bohemian" culture.
Beyond the history lesson, "Neo-Bohemia" explains how, in our postindustrial era, creative communities are viewed more positively and actually help to gentrify areas that were once avoided. Comparisons to NYC's Greenwich Village and SF's North Beach (along with Paris' Montparnasse and Montmartre) are made to better prove the point. Great read if you have any interest in gentrification and urban development. Only complaint is I felt that there was too much emphasis on the negative aspects of artists Vs. yuppies. I was hoping more for statistics, rehabs and major commerce associated with gentrifying areas.

Barely adequate book of concepts.......2005-12-21
This book contains an A to Z listing of chess terms, definitions, concepts, slang terminology, names of special checkmating positions, amongst other things.
I have the sense that this book was a hack job, slapped together in order to make a quick buck. (Look, writing chess books for a living is a tough job.) This book is adequate, but not much more than that.
I bought this book from the "remainder" section of my bookstore, and paid well beneath list price for this book. Had this book been sold at list price, I would not have bought it.
This book may very well be available at your local library. It's the type of book that would seem to fit the needs of a general library population. I would recommend inquiring at your library before buying this book.
'Chess Thinking' might be useful for beginners who are not conversant with chess terminology. Also reluctantly recommended for chess instructors (to have as a ready reference for students.)

By now Mr Pandolfini must know that his chess playing skills and success as a chess coach will never carry over to his writing skills. He throws together random lines of useless material...gets it published by Fireside Chess Library and gets a nice paycheck...he has this down to a science. The purpose of his books is to transfer money from your pocket to his. If you don't agree with me, do a search of just his books here on Amazon and read the reviews.
If you click on my name you will get my personal information and see a recommended study list. I put together this list of books and software with only one thing in mind...to improve your game without wasting your money. If you want to get better at chess this list will give you the most bang for your buck.

The name is a bit deceptive to say the very least... More of a book explaining terms and filled with useless things... Maybe Pandolfini has a few good books, this is not one of them... Perhaps someone that is very new to the game could learn something from this... Yet they will not get better from or because of this book... If you want something with chess thinking this isnt the best book... Maybe Art of Attack, Art of Middlegame, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Zurich 1953, Advances Since Nimzo, Tal Life and Games and Botvinnik one hundred selected games... Would help you more with that aspect of the game just to name a few books... Well it is your money so if you wanna spend it on this book... Nobody is gonna stop you, just remember you were warned... Do not get this book thinking its gonna help you formulate an iron clad strategy... Nor that it will help your tactical or positional play... Basically all this will help is lesson your bank account... Perhaps waste some time of yours reading it as well...

Not one of the wisest investments in chess. Chess terms are learned through exposure and study. This book is unnecessary for chess players at any level. There are better chess books out there.

Of all the chess strategies and tactical books out there it is so great that the average layman chess player who is not a "club Player" has a reference of terms and axioms used by the "royal" game society to be presented to the general public and the "society".Can you imagine trying to learn the english language without a dictionary.Well,this is a chess dictionary and I commend the author in an age of "strategies and tactics."(For the sake of sales)

The book was helpful in getting through my class because it was a requirement. The book had more cases and readings than actual theory. Which is good because you almost always get theory and less examples. The print is kind of small.
Please. Spare me this book........2007-04-16
The previous reviewer has it on the mark. I patiently formed my own opinion, and reached just about the same conclusion. I am forced to use this text as one of two final courses in an MBA program to coincide with final projects.
If one hasn't achieved the mindset this book tries to instill, by the time you get this far in a program to use the text, you've already missed the train. Through very long case studies and short chapters, you review everything you ever learned about business. It is so slow and common sensical, you wonder who the book is trying to reach. It has little commentary and presents the idea of transnational organizations as a textbook concept. Boring, frustrating, basic.
I dread this book. The very sight of it makes me cringe and brings on acid reflux. Make sure you get your magnifying glass out, you'll need it. The text is in about a 8 or 9 font. This book may present more of a test of nerves, patience and sanity than it does a convincing or compelling read and study on transnational management.
Typical academia ego-boosting drivel.......2007-01-31
This book demonstrates the never-ending supply of ego-boosting drivel put out by academia every year! Retailing for nearly $150.00, it is barely more than a collection of case studies and long-winded, over explained obscure topics. Containing over 800 pages, only ~114 are dedicated to actual chapter material. In addition to the over-whelming mass of case material, there are 3 to 4 "Readings" at then end of each chapter section. These, too, are nothing more than ego-boosting drivel. I get the feeling that this book, with little substance, was just a way to sell case studies and collect royalties. For only ~114 pages of actual discussion, this book should not have cost more than $25 - and that's stretching it.
If you want to get a REAL education on business in a global setting, pick up the latest business magazine or weekly news periodical. In less than 30 minutes you will have a REAL world lesson in REAL time. For even more current global business topics and learning opportunities, try the internet sites of leading business and news magazines.
This textbook, and educational institutions' use of, perfectly illustrates why so many students graduate without the practical knowledge necessary to cope in the REAL business world.
In a world that constantly re-invents itself, textbook education (and this one in particular) is no way to stay competitive and current!
My sympathy goes out to every student forced to endure the use of this textbook (and 1000's others just like it)

A Well Balanced Classroom Textbook.......2004-07-11
This book can be used at any level of post-secondary education (Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate) where international issues are the focus. I used this text as a part of a Ph.D. curriculum.
The book is broken up into three main segments; strategy, organization dynamics, and practical application with future considerations.
Each chapter within each segment has three main sections; topical discussion, cases, and readings (i.e. journal type articles) related to the chapter's topic in that order. Although I think it would have better to have the readings before the cases, it not really that impeding.
I found the topical discussion to the point, borderline brief, which is good since most people only can remember 10% of what they're reading anyway. The negative here is that this book may have to be supplemented with other material to cover a semester length.
The cases do not present any preconceived questions, so the institution or instructor will have to come up with those on their own. I like this since it allows an instructor to personalize the book to their class, not that they don't do that anyway.
Overall, this is a decent text with up-to-date knowledge (as of 2004) to be relevant for a few years to come.
