Book Description
Want to know the secrets behind Canada's most popular coffee-and-donuts chain? Read all about them in a new book chronicling the rise of Tim Hortons, from its humble beginnings to the national institution it is today. Written by former Tim Hortons marketing director Ron Buist, Tales from Under the Rim: The Marketing of Tim Hortons is an engrossing, fast-paced business memoir. According to Buist, it took "one hockey player, one favourite barber shop, one former drummer, and one police officer," plus "the luck hard work brings" to make Tim Hortons a second home for millions of Canadians. The original founders -- Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Tim Horton, donut entrepreneur Jim Charade, and Nova Scotia born franchise wizard Ron Joyce-- are all profiled in the book, along with many of the store owners in whom the success of the chain resides. If you have ever wondered about the invention of the apple fritter or the raisin dutchie, how timbits are made, or the origins of "Roll Up the Rim to Win," Tales from Under the Rim will answer your questions. Detailing the company's creative marketing strategies of the past 24 years, with loads of fascinating anecdotes, Tales from Under the Rim provides hitherto unknown glimpses into the transformation of a modest chain into Canada's most successful franchise operation. Tim Hortons is Canada's most successful coffee chain, with over 2,300 stores in Canada and US, and a Canadian market share of 70%, the highest of any franchise operation in the country. Each day, Tim Hortons franchises sell more than three million cups of coffee and more than a million donuts.

Okay style but lacks a bit in substance........2003-12-11
A better title might have been: A History of Tim Hortons from the Head of Marketing. Not as snazzy but it gives a truer meaning to what the book is about. Ron Buist in the first half gives you the beginnings of Tim Hortons and how it was the hard work and dedication of the founders and the franchisees who created the brand "Tim Hortons". Taking an idea that differentiates you from the rest, listening to your customers and workers, giving people more than they expect these are all the underlying ideas that pepper the first half of the book. Nothing too revolutionary or an example of marketing genius at work. The second half are a few memoirs or recollections of a couple of the "True Life" television commercials and the "Roll Up to Win" campaign. And also the Tim Hortons Foundation is thrown in afterwards.
All in all the book is the recollections of Ron Buist as the marketing director at Tim Hortons for over 25 years. When you look at the book and after you've read it that would seem obvious as to what it would be but its not quite sold that way, at least to me. I would have also liked to hear some insights given into what made the marketing work. How has the marketing and what marketing in particular has helped make Tim Hortons a Canadian staple. There wasn't a lot of that in here. Sort of like rolling up the rim of your coffee cup and seeing you won a timbit; it's something but not what you were really hoping for. Overall I give it a B- on the StuPage. Okay style but lacks a bit in substance.

Customer Reviews:
YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.......2007-02-12
"Evenings with Cary Grant" is the most incredible book. A sort of documentary on paper, Nancy Nelson uses an interview/intercut format and cleverly weaves a narrative through the most revealing and often amusing anecdotes. Cary Grant talks and then Gregory Peck. Katherine Hepburn says something, and then we hear from Audrey Hepburn. As one reviewer said, "When you get to the end, you feel as though you've lost a good friend." Nelson uses no conjecture or supposition. All her sources are primary. An announcement in a recent Sunday "New York Times" said that Nelson will speak about "The Cary Grant Few People Knew" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on June 15. I've got my ticket!
A beautiful life........2006-08-16
It is no easy thing to become so successful in one's career and yet be universally loved and respected as Cary Grant was in his lifetime.
Thanks to the author for focusing on the good of the man and ignoring the rest. He was a good man and that is enough. Ms. Nelson does a good job in giving us an idea of who the man really was--a gentleman who was loyal to his friends, if not his wives...but in the end, even THEY still loved him after it was over.
My only disappointment (not the author's fault) was to find out that Cary Grant hated "Arsenic and Old Lace," one of my favorite movies.
Cary Grant - Excellent actor, excellent man.......2006-08-13
Like other reviewers, I'm a big Cary Grant fan. I usually hesitate to read about the personal lives of actors because they often lead disappointing lives. But Nelson's collection of stories and personal accounts from Grant's friends introduced me to the wonderful man behind the handsome movie star. I'm looking forward to watching his movies again after reading this book -- there is information from him and co-stars about some of the films that will make it fun to watch them again.
One of the best out there.......2006-08-13
I absolutely love old movies, old stars, new movies and their stars, but I LOVE Cary Grant!!! So I wanted to get a book about him and I always check up on the author and how much they knew about the person they are writing about, and when I saw this book and I had to get it.This Book shows the life of Archie Leach (we know him as Cary Grant)his life growing up,and his rise to stardom, his love life, his friends, and his wonderful sense of humor.I was so happy to find out that the man we all fell in love with was the same in real life that he was onscreen.I don't want you to have to read a long review but I just wanted to say how much I love this book and the writers style.Every body should own this book. It's worth reading more than one time.
Marc Elliott should have read this book first before writing his!.......2006-03-17
So many of us are admirers of Archie Leach... a.k.a. Cary Grant... and are always interested in learning more about the man, the individual, the actor... Well, Evenings With Cary Grant: Recollections in His Own Words and by Those Who Knew Him Best proved to be an enjoyable read, sans the Hollywood rumour mill that many of the other publications (i.e. Marc Elliott's recently published biography on CG) tend to promote. It's so easy to fill a book's pages with hearsay, especially when the subject is no longer even on the earth to speak for his/her self
I was pleased to find Nancy Nelson's book filled with stories from Cary Grant himself and so many of his friends who shared time with him both professionally and personally. If you are looking for a good read... a book that captures the essence of not only the Hollywood legend, but the man himself, I strongly suggest you grab a copy of this book and settle in for an informative and enjoyable experience!
Book Description
What makes something sexy? Why are some things regarded as sacred and others profane? Why do mourners face such difficulty in parting with their beloved’s possessions? Why do we often feel distraught when we lose something, even when the object has little real value?
We spend our lives in a meaningful dialogue with things around us. Sometimes the conversation is loud, as in a collector’s passion for coins or art. More often, the exchange is subtle and muted, even imperceptible. We are surrounded by things, and they affect our emotions and impact our thoughts. The arrival of a dozen flowers from a lover or a letter from a grandchild makes our day; an old photo album or an afghan knitted by a favorite aunt offers comfort when we are troubled.
From exploring what makes something “beautiful” to why we place such value on antiques and artifacts from the past, Objects of Our Desire offers insights, both deep and delightful, into the ways we invest things with meaning and the powerful roles they play in our lives.
Notice the inviting contours of that sofa, the glint of a knife’s edge, the sparkle of a diamond ring. Feel the softness of the pashmina around that woman’s milky shoulders. Look at the majesty of a large jet plane. Take in the somberness of a gravestone. Put on an old pair of shoes. Clutch a warm mug of freshly brewed coffee. Sit on a rocking chair. Feel the sumptuous leather seats of a new car.
We are surrounded by things. We are involved with them, indebted to them. We speak to things and things speak to us. To say that we are interdependent is banal. Let us be courageous. Let us admit it: we are lovers.
—From Objects of Our Desire

Customer Reviews:
Not bad, more examples would help.......2007-04-08
As with most MS support material, this one is heavy on geek speak and too light on real-world examples and "most-common" scenarios and solutions. The issue is the amount of time it takes to wade through the explanations in order to find the simple setting or solution that is needed to solve the problem. But overall I would recommend this book for MS Exchange Server administrators - it does save some time over looking things up on Microsoft's absurdly complex "support" pages.
Great little Exchange 2003 Admin book.......2006-10-11
There have been several of these types of books published by MS Press. Several years ago I purchased the Exchange Pocket Consultant. These books, and the information provided by William Stanek, are great.
I traveled quite a bit doing Exchange migrations and clustering. The ability to toss something light, but dense with great information, into a backpack was awesome. It was also fun to pull it out and go over some of the principles with admins starting to operate their new Exchange 2003 infrastructures.
This book goes over the basic principles of configuring and administering an Exchange 2003 infrastructure. The information is presented in an easy to understand format and helps to facilitate learning about Exchange operations.
Excellent!.......2006-07-22
I spend most of my time working with SQL Server, but recently I had to take over and rebuild our Exchange. As I've had good success with Stanek's other books, I picked this one up the week before to help me get up to speed on Exchange, and it did an excellent job. I successfully upgraded, had all our servers up and running by Monday morning and we have an extensive multiple server configuraiton with OWA, wireless, and X.400 MTAs. Exchange Administrator Pocket Consultant is by far the one Exchange book I can't recommend highly enough. Get it, you'll be glad to have it on hand. I refer to this book constantly.
MS Exchange Server 2003 pocket consultant.......2006-03-14
This book has been very helpful with building a new server, migrating from MS Exchange 2000.
Ugly book.......2006-01-26
Buy it only if you haven't installed Exchange server help yet. If you have than read the help first and save money.
(Bought it in Russian and checked in English to make sure that translation is correct. Well it's a copy of English book, unfortunately)
