Book Description
In our present generation of mammoth discount chains, wholesale membership outlets, and internet buying, it has been increasingly difficult for the pioneer-older, more established retail chains-to continue to operate, the latest casualty being Montgomery Ward. What was once known as "America's Store," the venerable F. W. Woolworth Company, has disappeared from downtowns and shopping centers as shopping trends and merchandising have changed.
This story of one of the five founders of the Woolworth Company, Earle Perry Charlton, chronicles his life (both personal and professional) and what it was like to establish a new type of business in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Starting with meager savings and little capital of his own, he established a chain of fifty-three E. P. Charlton five & ten cent stores that was based in Fall River, Massachusetts, and stretched across Canada and the west coast of the United States from Seattle to San Diego, before joining with four other friendly competitors in 1912 to form what was to become the F. W. Woolworth Company.
Customer Reviews:
A retail genius, a true entrepreneur.......2005-07-20
This book is a fascinating window on the life and character of Earle Charlton, the quintessential entrepreneur. Winston Churchil, said that "we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Earle Charlton's life and legacy is a remarkably American story. From the meager lifestyle of a blacksmith's son to the phenomenal financial success, wealth happiness, cultivation of family and finally to the full expression of his charitable impulses; he embodies every business person's dreams. This book helps to convey the humanity and sensitivity of a man driven to succeed personally while not losing sight of the trials and sufferings of others less fortunate. This is a great account of an entrepreneurial dream capstoned with a legacy of humane philanthropy. Everyone should read the story of the life of Earle P. Charlton for inspiration, focus, civic mindedness and family values.
Highly recommended.......2002-01-17
The Charlton Story is a well-written and important tribute to one of America's greatest business entrepreneurs. Earle Perry Charlton, one of the five founding fathers who made the F.W. Woolworth Co. the most successful and well-known discount chain of all time, was also one of the most generous of men. His personal letters, many of which are reprinted in this book, provide insight into his strong business ethics ...his dealings with employees...and much more. This book is a fine addition to the library of anyone interested in business or biography.

The offbeat style of this wonderful story--and of Julie Vivas's perfectly matched illustrations--couldn't be summed up better than by the oddness of the first sentence: "There was once a small boy called Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge and what's more he wasn't very old either." Wilfrid lives next to a retirement home, filled with folks like "Mrs. Jordan who played the organ" and "Mr. Hosking who told him scary stories." But his favorite old person is 96-year-old Miss Nancy. Everyone says Miss Nancy has lost her memory, and despite the fact that Wilfrid doesn't even know what a memory is, by accident he helps her find it. Mem Fox's original take on the capacity of children to help the old remember is especially notable for its non-patronizing focus on old people. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr

my all time favorite.......2007-09-21
All I can say is I have had this book for many years and it is one of my FAVORITE children's books. Cutely written and the message is wonderful.
Story Review of the book Wilfred Gordon McDonald Patridge.......2007-05-26
Have you ever read the story, Wilfred Gordon McDonald Patridge? If you haven't read it, it's a cute little story about a little boy and an elderly woman. The story takes place in a town where a little boy and his parents live in one house and some elderly people live in the house next door. The little boy loves to go over to see these people and talk and laugh and to do different, specific things with each person. But there is one person the boy loves the most, a woman he calls Miss Nancy. He loves to talk with her and to share what they both have in common. But one day, the little boy's parents told him that Miss Nancy had lost her memory. The boy wasn't sure, so he decided to find out. Has Miss Nancy lost her memory? To find out for yourself, you'll have to read Wilfred Gordon McDonald Patridge.
Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is a GOOD book.......2007-05-23
In Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox was absoultly adorable. Wilfrid lives next door to an old folks home. Wilfrid knows all the people there and excpecially likes Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper, because she has four names just like him. He had a very special relationship with her.
One day Wilfrid over heard his parents talking about Miss. Nancy. They said, ''The poor old thing has lost her memory.'' Since Wilfrid didnt know what a memory was, he asked everyone at the old folks home and each one said something different. Wilfrid went home and found lots of things that makes him remember special moments.
Wilfrid brought all these things to Miss. Nancy and something remarkable happened. Miss. Nancy's memory came back.
This is a truly heart warming book and is also for all ages. I enjoyed it a lot and I am sure you would too if you read it.
A touching story.......2007-05-17
A touching story where we meet Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, who isn't very old, and Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper who lives next door in an old person's home.
Miss Nancy and Wilfrid are good friends, and when Wilfrid learns that Miss Nancy has lost her memory, he goes about to find out what a memory is so he can find it for her.
In my opinion, this is one of Mem Fox's best.
Try to remember the kind of September..........2004-06-23
Mem Fox fans are a livid crew. If you've ever met one then I think you might know what I mean. When you meet a Mem Fox fan, it is more than likely that you may find yourself grabbed bodily as your arms start to fill with Mem Fox book after Mem Fox book. Mem Fox fans love her work and are quick to recommend everything she's done in a thrice. If you should feel like giving in and reading her works, then let me recommend that you begin with the delightful, "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge". A touching tale of a boy and his elderly friend, the book explores the nature of memory itself in a way that children can understand.
Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge lives next to an old folks home and (as the book is quick to point out), "he wasn't very old either". Just a scrappy young boy, Wilfrid likes all the old people in the home, but his favorite is Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper because she has just as many names as he does. One day Wilfrid hears his parents tsk tsking over the fact that Miss Nancy has lost her memory. Wilfrid asks what a memory is and his pop explains that it's something you remember. This definition doesn't sit well with young Wilfrid, however, and he runs over to the neighbors to get a little more clarification. What he finds instead, however, are mixed messages. I mean, Mrs. Jordon says a memory is something warm, while Mr. Hosking says it's from long ago. Mr. Tippett says it's something that makes you cry while Miss Mitchell claims it's what makes you laugh. And to top it all off Mr. Drysdale says it's as precious as gold, period. Using his head, Wilfrid decides to put things from his own memories into a box to give to Miss Nancy. After giving her the things one by one, Miss Nancy suddenly realizes that she does remember bits and pieces of her life by going through the objects. We watch as a medal reminds her of her brother who went to war and didn't come back, and a puppet reminds her of one she herself owned and would entertain her sister with. And that is how a small boy helped Miss Nancy find her memory again.
The fear behind a book such as this is that it might unduly raise the expectations of those kids whose beloved grandparents suffer from such memory sapping diseases as Alzheimer's or dementia. After all, Wilfrid makes it look so easy. But if used conscientiously the story is a sweet intergenerational tale for all kids to enjoy. Who wouldn't want to run around playing with a bunch of wise elders like this crew? There is a definite sense that Wilfrid is a great comfort to these people and his easy going camaraderie with them is a joy to behold. The story is a well told one, hinting at the backgrounds of these different men and women but never exactly telling anything specifically. I was also pleased to find that Miss Nancy's memories were not purely cheerful ones. She remembers sad facts as easily as happy ones, suggesting that perhaps nothing is worth forgetting. And where else will preschoolers be given the chance to discuss the nature of memory itself?
Add to Mem Fox's adept narration the color imbued illustrations of artist Julie Vivas and you've got yourself a hit! Vivas has such an original eye-catching style that it's difficult not to recognize it instantly. It's a little like a rounded out Patricia Pollacco. Here the elderly sport slippers and elastically-challenged socks as well as fabulous multi-colored dresses and baggy pants. Wilfrid is your average kid, skateboarding in the old folks home and climbing hither and yon. I was especially taken with the shot of him lying upside down between his parents as he father lazily carries his teddy bear. Most interesting are the pictures of Miss Nancy's past. Here the young red headed Miss Nancy (looking a little like Wilfrid's older sister, perhaps) sports lank black tights, high brown button shoes, and eclectic purple silk loose-fitting chemises. Kids won't notice the obviously odd clothing, but parents may pause a moment and wonder just how exactly it is that Miss Nancy found such clothes back then.
Still, it's a lovely tale. Full of wit and imagination. Many picture books contain active elderly characters, but few contain so many within a single book. Here we have a story that gives respect to the older AND younger members of our society at the same time. We owe so much to both that it's nice to see a story that gives them the fun color filled adventure they so richly deserve.

Book Description
One of the least-known aspects of World War II is the internment of German "enemy aliens" in the United States. This narrative goes beyond other internment studies in its use of internee interviews and access to Justice and War Department personnel files. Fox concludes that rather than offering a reasonable assessment of the aliens' danger to United States internal security, the Justice Department incarcerated them-and excluded several hundred United States citizens-because of their German backgrounds, alleged disloyal statements and associations, socioeconomic class, or their characters and personalities.

The bonds of friendship among young and old.......2000-06-28
This beutifully illustrated book is a portrayal of the bonds of friendship and understanding that flourish between young children and elderly people. The story is simple, and in many ocassions written in rhyme, yet it deals with wonderful and complicated feelings and the view of these feelings when your a child and when you've walked for a while longer on this earth. A beautiful story for young and old!
Book Description
What is behind America’s enduring love affair with professional baseball, football, and basketball? Big Leagues traces the evolution of these team sports from unlikely beginnings to multibillion-dollar businesses that still arouse widespread passion. We love these sports, Fox argues, because they evolve within long, repeating cycles that leave them stable at their cores. Ballplayers, like their games, don’t change much. They remain children with a ball and juvenile in their attitudes toward sex, drink, and drugs, as well as toward superstitions and practical jokes.
Fox candidly illustrates the shenanigans of old-time and newer players, contradicts some accepted wisdom on the origins and early histories of the games, and includes a controversial account of the history of black athletes in America. He also surveys the world of fandom, examines the “big money” explosion, and dares to project the future.
Customer Reviews:
The Bigs.......2005-10-05
Most sports books focus on a single sport; this book is unusual in that it deals with three: baseball, football, and basketball, all on the pro level. In a terrific opening chapter, Fox discusses what he considers to be the defining moment for each sport, and for each it ends up being the same concept: putting the ball in the air (the "invention" of the jump shot in basketball by Kenny Sailors, the utilization of the forward pass by Benny Friedman, and the sudden blossoming of the home run with Babe Ruth).
Each team is then given a separate chapter in which Fox relates its early developments; Fox is particularly interested in the formative years of each sport: baseball prior to 1900, football when it was more a slugfest and teams just slammed into one another, and basketball when it actually was played inside a cage (thus the term "cagers" for basketball players). Finally, there's a chapter each on the "national" team for each sport: the Yankees, the Packers, and the Celtics.
Fox has done his reasearch well, but the book is more than just another history book. Humorous anecdotes abound, and Fox is forthright about how drink, drugs, and sex ruined many a career. You won't find your typical hero worship here either (except for maybe Ruth, Friedman, and Bill Russell), just a lot of interesting information about the three most popular pro sports in America. Highly recommended.
A Must Reading for Sport Historians.......2000-01-02
If you think you know something about the history of our top three American sports, you should try this one. Fox will tell you so much about what happened that you will shake your head saying, "I didn't know that." He tells his story eloquently. The breath and depth of his knowledge in some popular areas is awesome, especially his account of the evolution of the jump shot. I was left impressed with the degree of research that was necessary for such an interesting book. While his selection of pictures is interesting, it is the factual research concerning little known facts that will leave you a more knowledgable student of sports in America.

With plenty of examples and first-person insights.......2001-06-07
In Directing Film, film director Ken Russell shares his knowledge of the director's art and job from analyzing a script to making scenes and choosing images. Black and white film shots accompany a guide which comments on differences between plays and films, reveals the director's role in shooting a screenplay, and considers the requirements of the camera. Plenty of examples and first-person insights pack this presentation.

Ken Russell is one of the best directors of our century, and it's a joy to read about his craft. A must read for film buffs or students of the art.

A well-developed and researched TREASURE!.......2002-09-22
I have been reading numerous books on menstruation and menarche lately and without a doubt this book is one of the BEST resources I've encountered. I am amazed at the scope of research these ladies were able to compile, and am impressed with the even-handed and objective analysis they've shared. This is not light reading, and yet it is engrossing and insightful. I am especially impressed with the amount of attention they have paid to menarche (a girl's first period.) Nowhere else (and I've read nearly everything I can find) have I found this much honest, unbiased and straightforward information. My copy came through inter-library loan, but this is definitely a book I will purchase for my own library. Excellent work! My admiration and thanks to these women authors!
Second-Wave Feminism at it's Best!.......2002-03-29
Important work addressing the bloodmysteries that continue to shroud all women. An extremely helpful text for understanding how the role of menstruation and repoductive capability effects social structures and political equality movements. I highly recommend this read.
Didn't meet my expectations.......2000-08-09
A friend gave me this book suggesting that I would enjoy it, and I dutifully read it. I wish I'd spent my time differently. There are some good jokes in it, but all in all, it's not very enlightening.
It's about time to move into the new milennium.......2000-08-01
This book is a boring, humorless and extremely dated rant. It's painfully obvious that the authors are stuck in the groovy, bra-burning 70s. They've supposedly updated it, though you'd never know it. It's really time to take off the mood rings and the aviator frames, gals.
A great gift on the occasion of menarche!.......1999-07-21
Since the first edition of this book came out, I have given it over and over to girls in my family or daughters of friends when they get their first period. They always love it. They most especially love the chapter on Menstrual humor. I think it's really neat that a university press publishes such a regular and useful book.

**NOT** for the Playstation (no matter what they say).......2000-08-21
I have a Playstation. This book is pretty much useless to me. The grey-scale maps have very poor detail for one thing. For another, anything having to do with the Playstation version is treated as an exception. I had really hoped for lovely, detatiled maps to help me through the various topological levels in the game, but this book didn't provide that. The walk-throughs appear to have been written with the N64 version in mind. It was a waste of my money.

Book Description
When the official history of twentieth-century Wall Street is written, it will certainly contain more than a few pages on Michael Steinhardt. One of the most successful money managers in the history of "The Street," Steinhardt far outshone his peers by achieving an average annual return of over thirty percent-significantly greater than that of every market benchmark. During his almost thirty-year tenure as a hedge fund manager, he amassed vast wealth for his investors and himself. One dollar invested with Steinhardt Partners L.P., his flagship hedge fund, at its inception in 1967 would have been worth $462 when he retired from active money management in 1995.
No Bull offers an account of some of the investment strategies that drove Michael Steinhardt's historic success as a hedge fund manager including a focus on his skills as an industry analyst and consummate stock picker. He also reveals how his uncanny talent for knowing when to trade against the prevailing market trend-a talent that was not always appreciated by several erstwhile high-profile clients-resulted in many of his greatest successes. Here he provides detailed accounts of some of his most sensational coups-including his momentous decision, in 1981, to stake everything on bonds-and his equally sensational failures, such as his disastrous foray into global macro-trading in the mid-1990s.
At the same time, No Bull is the rags-to-riches story of a boy from Bensonhurst and his rise from the streets of Brooklyn to the heights of Wall Street. In a thoroughly engaging narrative, Steinhardt relates the early influences that shaped his attitudes toward life and success, as well as the beginning of his love affair with stock investing. Further, he chronicles his dawning awareness of the need for a purpose in life beyond the acquisition of wealth and how it led to his decision to retire and redirect his energies. We learn about his experiences as the chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council for nearly a decade, as well as his innovative thinking and ambitious projects to strengthen the Jewish community.
The inspiring true story of a Wall Street genius and world-class philanthropist, No Bull is an unforgettable read for finance professionals and students of human nature alike.
Michael Steinhardt is one of the most successful money managers in the history of Wall Street. He is also widely known for his philanthropic activities, particularly in the Jewish community-most notably as cofounder with Charles Bronfman of birthright israel, a program whose mission is to provide a free educational opportunity for every young Jewish person of the Diaspora to visit Israel.
Customer Reviews:
He puts his money where his mouth is .......2006-09-10
I have a different perspective from most other readers and reviewers of this book. I am not interested in knowing how Steinhardt traded his way to millions. I am not looking for tips and tricks of how to convert whatever dough I have into a lot more of it.
I was interested in reading a bit of the life story of one of the great figures of present- day Jewish communal life, someone who has put his money where his mouth is. There are a lot more wealthy Jews than Steinhardt, but there are few who have dedicated themselves and a good share of their money to helping an aging, assimilated Diaspora Jewish community reconnect with its heritage, and contribute to the long history and future development of the Jewish people.
Steinhardt, to my mind, is a hero for this .
As for the story of his own life - adventure. He reveals a great deal of moxie, and street- smarts in going his own way. He met adversity not with complaint but with learning what it taught him. I did not too much go for his toughness on his subordinates, but then he does show repentance and humility.
He also seems to be a person of great family loyalty and love, something I also find admirable.
Each one of us is only one of a kind, but we need more like this guy.
Good biography, but not so good on investment/trading tactics........2006-08-27
I bought the book to gain some trading insight from one of the greatest hedge fund managers ever, but it left me wanting. About 1/2 the book deals with religious and cultural issues regarding his heritage. His most profound investment ideas had more to do with the bond market, not the stock market. He detailed one trade in Occidental Petroleum that went bad for him, but didn't go into details.
An engaging autobiography on one of the best trader's ever.......2006-05-29
Steinhardt's memoir on his exploits from early childhod to beating the Street year after year is extremely enjoyable and highly educational. Frankly, I am quite surprised how many reviewers neglect to see the many nuggets of financial insight that are readily available in the book. Granted, it is a lot more subtle and restrained than the common how-to and strategy books out there, however, no less important in my humble opinion.
Case in point: (Pg 187) "Are some people naturals, like some athletes? I do not think so. Beginning at a very early age, I have made cumulatively more judgments, and more investment decisions based on the same kinds of data, than almost anyone else. This process unconsciously leads to a sharpening, a fine-tuning, that over time, results in fewer mistakes. In this repetitious behavior, learning occurs that is not consciously understandable but allows one to ferret out the higher probability from the lower. Thus, one develops "good instincts." Often listening to an idea led me to an entirely different conclusion than the proponent of the same idea, whose knowledge was far deeper than mine. It seemed knowledge was necessary but insufficient. While I have certainly made my fair share of mistakes, the filtering process that I contributed was extraordinarily effective."
This simple yet powerful observation by Steinhardt is just a small sample of what the book has in store for the initiated reader. As a professional, we constantly make decisions that are instinctual and just "feel right", yet have a tremendously hard time in explaining why and how we do them. Steinhardt's poignant observation on why some trader's "get it" and why some don't is something we as trader's probaly know unconsciously, but have a tough time explaining it on a conscious level.
A true gem of financial and psychological wisdom.
major disappointment.......2006-05-15
The book should be sub-titled "my life outside of the market". This book is a huge disappointment and is a waste of time and money to read. A lot of name dropping and very few insights into how he made money. What I learned was that as a fund manager who flipped over his portfolio many times a year, he generated a lot of commissions for brokerages. The direct consequence of this was that he was often the first person that they called when there was any news or stocks to buy or sell. From that he was frequently able to exploit a lot of price discrepancies between brokerages on the same stocks and also probably recieved the first dib on brokerages' latest thoughts on various stocks. Steinhardt is basically a sophisticated short term trader whose edge came from being at the nexus of wall street brokerages' information network. As for Variant Perception, it is a just a sophisticated phrase to explain that one should be able to have contrary view against the general market's view. This is easy to do if you are the first person to get Wall Street brokerages' latest thoughts and what they are about to do with certain stocks...Incidentally, Jim Cramer's wife used to work for Steinhardt and when Cramer was struggling as a fund manager, she gave him these insights to let him outperform the market.
Not an investment book.......2005-12-02
No Bull! First impression we think it's an investment book, unfortunately this book has nothing to do with investing, it's about an autobiography of Mr. Steinhardt. The title is misrepresented since Bull represents the market, a rising stock market if you prefer, while the strategies and techniques for stock trading is not described in this book as its title pretended. If you are looking for good investment books, have a look for the books of Jesse Livermore, Nicholas Darvas and Martin Zweig, and do not forget the Market Wizards.
