Book Description
Richard Korman has written a fascinating biography of an inventor, Charles Goodyear, harnessing a new technology that also provides a panoramic view of America at the onset of its industrial revolution. Drawing on newly discovered archival records, Korman tells a suspenseful story of scientific experimentation and legal struggle in creating a portrait of an eminent American whose eccentricity anticipates the trials of new economy pioneers of today.

A fascinating, true-life tale of science.......2002-05-16
The Goodyear Story: An Inventor's Obsession And The Struggle For A Rubber Monopoly by Richard Korman (Senior Editor, Engineering News-Record, McGraw-Hill) is the amazing and informative biography of Charles Goodyear, the man who in the 1830's began his efforts to create rubber -- a material, in his belief, which would forever alter the world and the course of human civilization. His dream cost so much that his family lived in poverty and he suffered in debtor's prison. Yet his dream was not only to make rubber, but also to reap the wealth of controlling its creation and distribution; when others tried to lay claim to the manufacture of his miracle, only a lawsuit as argued by the famous Daniel Webster could settle the dispute once and for all. The Goodyear Story is a fascinating, true-life tale of science, business, and the striving of human nature against great odds and adverse circumstances.
A great read!.......2002-04-16
Korman hits a home run with his portrait of the inventor Charles Goodyear and his self-destructive mania surrounding finding a way to make rubber a useful industrial product. The craziness continues when Goodyear claims the credit for the invention (and the royalties) as his own.
The book is a time-traveling glimpse into industrial revolutionary America and England and the swirling energy surrounding the changes happening at the time.
A must for ambitious business people and basement tinkerers!
Book Description
A gold medal Olympian, Babe Didrikson, recently rated by ESPN as one of the top ten athletes of the twentieth century, excelled at every sport she tried: running, jumping, javelin throwing, swimming, basketball, tennis, golf, and baseball. Gifted and controversial, Babe's athletic prowess and personality took the country by storm from the 1930s to the 1950s. From Texas tomboy to sports superstar, Babe set the bar for every female athlete who would follow her and opened the world's eyes to what one dedicated woman can achieve. Author Susan E. Cayleff, whose adult biography of Babe Didrikson was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, now brings the rousing true-life story of Babe to today's young women.

BABE The Babe.......2005-03-02
Written on a sophomoric level, this brief biography of Babe centers on the highlights of her life but ignores Babe's life-long emotional roller-coaster. After reading this book, you may think Babe enjoyed her life as an outcast and her distinctive masculine character was merely a promotion gimmick; that her `tomboy' nature disappeared when her sexual identity was questioned. It completely ignores the many questions about her sexual ambiguity and promotes her marriage to George Zaharias as the real thing. If it was a `for real' marriage, why did George promote constant `out-of-town' excursions, rarely joining her, seemingly content to be separated for long time periods? This book is like a biography written about pre-AIDS Rock Hudson or Liberace. It does not examine the real Babe .... a gifted athletic ahead of her time who tried to fit in. Sports probably kept her sane. This book does not tell you who the Babe is or what she was up to; only what she achieved.
Fun, readable & informative for young and old alike.......2000-10-21
I loved reading about this gregarious and complicated athlete. This is a biography intended for young adults, but everyone will like it. Cayleff's original adult biography says she spent ten years researching Babe's life, interviewing surviving family and friends, etc., so her story is the real thing. It's also an important story, since she was the only female mentioned in the top 10 of "the greatest 20th century athletes" lists by ESPN, etc.
I particularly enjoyed how Babe had a talented story-telling "changeling" quality to remake herself when she wasn't getting what she wanted. She was a physically strong "Texas tomboy" trying to make it in a time and place that liked girly-girl athletes.
What struck me most was the irony that her tombstone reads "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game," yet Babe always said "I don't see any point in playing if I don't win. Do you?" She had a few different images going for her, and she used all the tricks!
Get it; I'm assigning it to my community college students to learn about both women and American culture in the 30s-50s. They'll enjoy reading it while learning.
Yes, the greatest athlete..........2000-08-22
Susan Cayleff, presents the factual information in a clear and comprehensive manner. It is unfortunate that the life of Babe, reads like a sophmoric book report.

Painfully bad.......2004-05-09
Despite Bert Sugar's reputation, this is one of the most worst sports books I have read. He is guilty of "overwriting", inserting awkward metaphors and descriptives throughout each fact-starved page. I have tried several times to read this book, but each section is bloated with commentary such as "...Aaron had quietly snuck up on Ruth's record...he was laying claim to more records than an Alaskan claim-jumper..." Huh? And describing a young Bill Russell: "...a skinny, six-foot-two, 128-pound teenager who looked like he worked in an olive factory dragging the pimientos through..." What in the world are you talking about, Bert?
This book is better when Sugar sticks to facts and doesn't try to dazzle us with his "wit". He is not a terrible writer, he just tries way too hard here. I wouldn't recommend this unless it were rewritten.
a great book.......1999-07-28
well what do you expect, it isnt biased towards boxing, boxing is the greatest sport of all time, and many great athletes have been boxers. This book is very thorough and well written.
Entertaining!! A must for trivia buffs everywhere!!!.......1998-12-21
I have known Bert Sugar personally for almost thirty years and I have always found him to be very interesting with a mind like a steel trap. Reading this book, for me, was a real treat, because, like Mr. Sugar, I fancy myself to be a fan of sports-related trivia. Unlike one previous reviewer, I found Mr. Sugar's rankings to be equally distributed among all the sports. Ranked among the top 5 were yesteryear's incarnations of Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders - multi sports stars who could do everything on and off the field. Jackie Robinson, ranked number 4, excelled at baseball, football, basketball, swimming, track, and even tennis. Number 2 rated Jim Thorpe, in addition to his success in football, baseball, and track, also won (Bert, you might or might not be aware of this!) the 1912 Intercollegiate BALLROOM DANCING championship! Coming in at number one........JIM BROWN, a FIVE sport star at Syracuse in football, baseball, basketball, track, and...get this... LACROSSE! I consider Bert's book to be a must read and a sure-fire conversation starter.
Useless.......1998-05-25
When reading the description, high hopes are raised on the potential reader. Mr. Sugar's selection is disproportionally biased towards boxing. Even Mr. Sugar's boxing selections are disappointing; quite a surprise considering his prestige in the field. Other popular sports such as football, soccer, and basketball are not covered in the depth that they deserve. Furthermore, his oppinions are rarely supported by facts, sometimes leading to disinformation . Sincerely, I regret buying it and I would not recommend it to any serious sports reader.

Thoroughly entertaining.......1999-09-09
Bert chose the 100 greatest atheletes of all time, but the reader must understand that these are his choices, not yours. Who is ever going to agree with lists like these? THe previous critique of Berts book said that there was aheavy slant to boxers, which there is not. Ali, Robinson, Louis, Dempsey, Johnson, Armstrong and Pep are the only fighters chosen. 7 boxers in a list of 100 athletes is not a heavy slant. One could make the argument that he left out too many fighters. Bert's list, like all other lists of it's like. are very subjective. They are derived from personal opinions and are meant to strike up debates. I did not agree with several inclusions and omissions, but the book was an excellent read. Bert is a very entertaining writer and his profiles on each athlete was well worth the purchase. The selections and order, I felt were secondary. A must buy for sports fanatics

Donald Mitchell's second book on the life and work of Gustav Mahler focuses principally on Mahler's first settings of Wunderhorn texts, volumes I and II of the Lieder und Gesaenge, his first song-cycle, the Lieder eines fahrendedn Gesellen, the later, orchestral settings of Wunderhorn poems. The central section of the book explores the extraordinary and often eccentric chronology of the First, Second and Third Symphonies' composition, an often minute exploration which reveals the interpenetration of song and symphony in this period of Mahler's art, emphasizes the significance for these works of imagery drawn from the Wunderhorn anthology, and calls attention to the ambiguous position ocupied by much of Mahler's music at this time, suspended as it was between the rival claims - and forms - of syphony and symphonic poem. The final section of the book not only looks at the Fourth Symphony as the final, perhaps most perfect, flowering of Mahler's Wunderhorn symphonies, but also investigates such fascinating topics as the relationship between Mahler and Berlioz, Mahler's addiction to the E flat clarinet, and the influence of Bach on Mahler's later masterpieces.
Book Description
Since World War II, tourists have flocked to Florida's northwest Gulf Coast and sun and fun spots at Panama City Beach, Fort Walton Beach, and Pensacola Beach. Every year those visitors number in the millions.
For those who long to recall how the vacationland appeared thirty, forty, or even fifty years ago, Tim Hollis has written Florida's Miracle Strip: From Redneck Riviera to Emerald Coast.
In a style that informs and entertains, Hollis describes the rise of early developments such as Long Beach Resort and major tourist attractions, such as the Gulfarium and the Miracle Strip Amusement Park. With heartfelt nostalgia and a dose of tongue-in-cheek, he reminisces on the motels and tourist cottages; the restaurants, such as Captain Anderson's and Staff's; the elaborate miniature golf courses, such as Goofy Golf and its many imitators. He takes a special delight in recovering the memories of those quirky businesses that now exist only in faded photographs and aging postcards, such wacky tourist traps as Castle Dracula, Petticoat Junction, Tombstone Territory, and the Snake-A-Torium.
In the book, Hollis examines how this area became known as the "Miracle Strip," and how the local chambers of commerce got so tired of that image that the name gradually fell into disuse. The book is illustrated with a profusion of vintage photos and advertisements, most of which have not been seen in print since their original appearances. For the nostalgia lover, the snowbird, the tourist seeking yesteryear, Florida's Miracle Strip: From Redneck Riviera to Emerald Coast will be a welcome traveling companion.

Fun read!.......2005-08-09
This was a fun read, especially for those who were children when the touristy gimmicks of the Gulf coast were in their prime. I loved the pictures and the background info on my favorite attractions.

Good, but there are better ones.......2000-10-26
This book seems a little hyped. I found the book "Quizzing" to be a much more fascinating read.
Good book for everyday reading...!!!.......1999-08-16
Liked the book. I learned a lot. It is an easy book to read and enjoy. Not one of those high-minded books arrogantly written for so called "serious trivia buffs." I gave this book as a gift to my nephew as well.
Have seen better collections.......1999-06-23
Read this book. Was not impressed by the results. Some of the information in this book is good.... however, some just serve as fillers.Examples being questions on Countries and their Capitals. Some things are incomplete - viz. a question on the seven hills of Rome only mentions 6 hills.
For serious trivia hunters/ quizzers, not value for money. I would recommend Mastermind/Ultimate Trivia.
Non-Stop Fun !!!.......1999-06-19
I recently took this book on a train journey from Boston to Washington DC with me and I was so absorbed in all the fun stuff in the book that I didn't even notice time fly by. What a great unusual little book... very enlightening.
Awesome! Enjoyble! Highly Recommeded!.......1999-05-08
I highly recommend this book. It is different from any other trivia books that I have previously read. Creative work. Buy it!

Windows Command Line (from a Linux User Perspective).......2007-07-13
I found the book to be helpful in understanding some of Window's more common command line programs and associated options. However, the book has omitted significant detail regarding relatively common commands (e.g. robocopy, xcopy, etc.) I recommend the book "universal command line", a compendium of command line programs and arguments for six operating systems including windows, linux, unix, mac, solaris, etc. The book has good coverage of windows networking functions.
Great information book.......2007-05-04
This is a great info book for windows administrators. Most of the very important commands for windows OS administration.
Excellent Book!.......2007-03-14
Such an excellent book to have at hand! I've been using this book for the past 2 years and have typed in practically every code example. I don't recall a single example not working. The one on page 47 works too (of course you might want to read the TIP right before the code that says how to reference variables in scripts vs at the commandline) Hint: Its a different syntax and the author tells you the difference. LOL :-).!!!
my new co-worker.......2006-12-13
This is one of the most useful books I know.
It's great to have this book aside you can consult if you run into trouble.
Shows the Windows generation the power we had with DOS and have with UNIX and Linux.......2006-12-03
The thing I most like about this book and others like it is that it brings the Windows drag and drop generation into the real world of using and administering PCs in the workplace. One can always hope this art form never gets lost. Anytime users and administrators can get away from the GUI way of doing things and actually use the PC as it was intended, that is a good thing.
Learning that behind every button is a script is a wonderful empowerment.
