These days, if it isn't a dot-com venture, it's no adventure at all. But in early 1996, when Tom Ashbrook jumped from the world of ink and paper to that of computer screen and mouse, Internet start-ups were largely the domain of computer geeks and 18-year-old whiz kids--not exactly the most obvious place for a journalist with a family to support. But with big dreams and a midcareer itch, Ashbrook took The Leap. The result is a look back at those adrenalin-pumped years that's filled with honesty, humor, and a healthy dose of introspection.

Neither a geek nor a whiz kid, Ashbrook was an award-winning writer for the The Boston Globe, where he had worked for 15 years. Shortly after winning a coveted one-year sabbatical in Harvard's Neiman Fellowship program, Ashbrook began talking Net dreams with an old college friend, Rolly Rouse. Their vision was to launch a Web site that would present home-design information and images and enable users to create online idea portfolios and buy quality products for their dream homes. Ashbrook soon quit his job and plunged into the project full time, endlessly revising business plans, tapping anyone and everyone for advice, courting venture capitalists, hoarding free credit cards for backup "security", and forever trying to convince a sane and worried wife that he wasn't zooming headlong over a cliff. As a case study of HomePortfolio.com, it's a story of manic speed and energy. As the story of one man's midlife adventure, it's a tale of trepidation, fear, ambition, love, and wonderment.

Ashbrook writes with eloquence. His descriptions are imaginative, juicy, and always dead-on. For example, Harvard Business School "was a gleaming, vitamin-enriched, brick and marble and white-trimmed monument to economic steroids," and its old buildings "always looked next-to-new, like rich, pampered matrons on full-dose nip-and-tuck regimens of estrogen and plastic surgery." And he remembers the Myers-Briggs personality test "smelled a little like horoscopes for eggheads to me, with its big gumbo of letters and pat descriptions." Occasionally, Ashbrook's tendency to spice up his descriptions gets a bit much as he throws in too many metaphors; it's as if his brain is on hyperlink overdrive. Overall, though, his graceful prose flows with alacrity, and the pace is infectious. Forget the quiet comfort of your favorite reading chair; you'll be stomping down the sidelines, hoarsely shouting, "Yes, yes, you're almost there, go, one more push!" For that's what this is, a breathless tale of giving birth, an exhausting, exhilarating play-by-play of sweaty labor and life-changing success. Beware... it'll give you the itch. --S. Ketchum

Book Description

In 1996, Tom Ashbrook was an international reporter who, in a crisis of the soul, resolved to join an old college classmate on the Internet rocket ride. THE LEAP tells the story of how he walked away from an enviable career to launch a risky new business venture, and it could serve as a template for anyone with e-commerce fantasies. As a deeply felt tale of a man who risks and rediscovers his family and purpose, it also has all the hallmarks of a classic. Ashbrook undertakes his white-knuckle journey in pursuit of the dream of an Internet startup without business experience, a technical background, or money. "I always knew you would do something crazy in the middle of your life," his wife, Danielle, tells him as their relationship careens through a dramatic rebirth of its own. "I just never knew it would be this kind of crazy." Ashbrook's odyssey is also the great American joy ride -- the story of two guys in the laboratory, in the garage, on the frontier, betting the ranch and then racing, half scared out of their wits, half giddy with adrenaline, toward the finish line. Success, when it finally comes, is sweet, but it is Ashbrook's story of self-transformation along the way that wins our hearts with its candor, its unabashed zeal, and the self-deprecating humor the author shares as he throws himself and his family over the edge in the middle of life to reach out for a new beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Tom, Thanks for the Ride.......2005-06-04

I worked for Tom at Homeportfolio.com. Everyday was filled with passion and gutsy intensity. Thanks for the memories and the education--and sharing your side of things with us from the book.

5 out of 5 stars Before You Decide to Leap...........2000-11-05

In an article which appeared in FSB magazine, Ashbrook explains "There is a game I call startup solitaire. It doesn't have a rule book. It just comes to you, late at night. It goes like this: You're alone in your bedroom with a tall stack of credit cards. You're slowly spreading them out on the bed, turning the cards over and over, checking them against your monthly statements, looking for a few more dollars to borrow."

As he observes in the book, Ashbrook had dreams his life wasn't touching. He heard a clock ticking. He knew the world was changing in ways that obliterated his old assumptions. "Something huge was happening, something on a scale so large that I was lucky to see it even once in my lifetime. It was stirring economies and imaginations and possibilities like nothing I had ever known. And the more I looked at it, the more desperately I wanted to be a part of it."

For those who are tempted to make a leap into High Risk/High Reward Entrepreneurship, this is "must reading" because the game to be played -- startup solitaire -- is not for the timid nor for the incompetent. Ashbrook enables his reader to accompany him each step up to his "leap", while he is airborne, and then....The book's subtitle correctly suggests that this is "a memoir of love and madness in the internet gold rush." Like so many others, Ashbrook was caught up in what was the apparently irresistible "fever" of it. What happened to him, to his family members, his friends, and his business associates? What did he learn from his experiences? It's all here, waiting for you to share it...albeit vicariously and perhaps from a position of relative security.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy Read for An E-Commerce Blank Slate.......2000-07-26

"The Leap" is a fun, accessible and page turning foray into the world of e-commerce wannabes, especially if you happen to be clueless but intrigued by the phenomena of web start-ups and the preternatural sums of money required for so many of them. A friend lent me this book unsolicited. More out of courtesy than curiosity, I thought I'd skim the first few pages and return it. Wrong! Until I read it, I didn't think I was particulary interested in e-commerce matters, especially yuppie-sounding ones. But I found instead that Tom Ashbrook's book resonates on multiple levels, so that someone like me who'se not likely to be interested in what goes into starting 'just one more cyber company' is in for a big suprise. "The Leap" is an edgy mixture of personalities, relationships, families, mid-life crises, risk taking, and lots more. It's a quick and suspenseful read. Given the fickle nature of these companies, there's no final ending. Since completing this book, I've found that I pick up on media stories about other similar ventures undertaken by people with little or no capital and have a more fully informed (albeit of a 'cyber start-up 101' nature) idea and appreciation for what's involved. While people like Tom and his partner, Rolly Rouse (the obsessed and original brains behind the entire Homeportfolio venture) may not be entirely like you and me (they are after all Yale educated and know lots of people with potential deep pockets) they and their families are enough like lots of us that their story is simultaneously exciting and frightening. Enjoy your leap into their leap!

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not as good as Burn Rate.......2000-07-18

If you are going to read one book on internet startups read "Burn Rate". This book was interesting in its own way - focusing more on the impact to one's family of doing an internet startup. But I found that story fairly predictable - of course you have to work hard and miss many hours away from home. I found myself wishing the author would get past deciding to commit himself to the venture and tell us more about mechanics of starting the company.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for entreprenuers--and their families.......2000-07-11

Tom Ashbrook has written the book that my partner and I have talked about--a hard look at the reality of living the entreprenuerial dream (or sometimes nightmare). "The Leap" portrays the emotional rollercoaster of a startup, from the exhilarating highs of the early wins to the long dark nights of the soul when there seems to be no way out of the box in which you've put yourself and your family. With his reporter's skills, Ashbrook tells the story with style, insight, and a narrative drive worthy of Raymond Chandler.

The cast of characters is familiar to all who have fought these battles, although it appears that Ashbrook and Rouse managed to avoid the "bad guys" and charlatans most of us encounter along the way. Every entreprenuer knows the "wannabes" who jump in early but are unable to stay the course, the selfless contributors who provide critical feedback, contacts, industry knowledge, or just emotional support, and the dedicated employees who catch the dream early and stay committed to pursuing it whatever the cost. Most important, however, the author vividly portrays the burdens placed on friends and family. I came away from this with a much stronger appreciation for, and insight into, the toll that the last seven years have taken on my wife and sons. I look forward to a sequel chronicling this never-ending story.

This book should be required reading for anyone considering "the leap", and for their spouse as well.

The New World has a curious habit of despatching emissaries of great, yet strangely circumscribed, power to the Old. Pillsbury was a man who took the chess world by storm at Hastings 1895, the greatest tournament which had ever been held.

5 out of 5 stars Synopsis.......2007-07-09

Peter Clarke's book on Tigran Petrosian is the indispensable counterpart to his classic volume on Mikhail Tal. Tal and Petrosian could not have been more dissimilar, yet Clarke treats each subject with equal mastery. Tigran Petrosian was at first a modest amateur player who, nevertheless, believed that ultimately he had a field marshal's baton in his knapsack - and he set out to prove it. Not for him the sudden and dramatic storming of the highest chess bastions - Petrosian gradually moved up the ranks, perfecting his ultra strategic style and focussing on the elimination of loss, rather than victory at all costs. This softly-softly approach brought Petrosian the world crown and enabled him to retain it for six years, thus outperforming Smyslov, Tal, Spassky and Fischer. The games in this book, which bring us to Petrosian's successful match against Botvinnik, demonstrate an ethereal beauty of which few other champions were capable.
Peter Clarke won numerous silver medals in the British Championships, he represented England in the World Championship cycle and he played top board for England in the Chess Olympiad at Havana 1966. He is a fluent Russian reader and his notes access the very best of contemporary Soviet commentary.

1 out of 5 stars A classic book, but..........2003-11-23

Everyone knows the story of Pillsbury - he was one of the greatest players who ever lived.

A dashing young man, he went as a completely unheralded talent to Hastings, 1895 - perhaps one of the greatest tournaments of chess history - and surprised everyone (but himself!) by taking clear first place. This placed him firmly in the ranks as one of the World's very best players.

The original book was ... and is a classic. (The first ever book in English on this player!) It is also in DESCRIPTIVE NOTATION.

This volume is simple profiteering. It is a copy of the original by the publishers. (Hardinge Simpole) It looks like a bad copy, and it is. Many of my pages are so washed out; I can barely make out the words and the moves. On one page, there is a large ink blotch that practically obliterates the move. The diagrams have NOT been re-done; they are simple, extremely poor copies of an old-style type of diagram that was not all that great to begin with. Virtually all the defects of a really bad photo-copy are present in this volume. This might be bearable in an old book, or in a very inexpensive volume. But in a book I paid nearly 35 bucks for ... this is simply unacceptable.

If you are a huge fan of Pillsbury - and cannot live without this book, you may want to consider purchasing this offering. But my advice is don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Tragedy of an American genius.......2002-07-30

An interesting volume of annotated chess games of an American chess genius who sadly died shortly after an attempted suicide. Nevertheless the book deals with a great chess player who played some fine games in his all too brief career. Published by Hardinge and Simpole.

4 out of 5 stars triumph and disaster-an american chess legend.......2002-07-11

lets get the problems out of the way first-the notes to these games are very light and being a reprint of a book from the 1920's the notation is descriptive and the typeface and diagrams look antiquated.

however this remains the best record there is of harry nelson pillsbury an american chess genius in the same mould as morphy and fischer. he came to europe-won hastings 1895 the strongest tournament ever held up to that time-won superb games against the european champions including steinitz and lasker-but then he tragically went insane and died at a pitifully early age.

pillsburys best games all appear here and they exhibit a grand sweep and vitaity of purpose which would make them the envy of any modern grandmaster. his win against tarrasch from hastings for example is a classic race between pillsburys king side attack and tarraschs slaughterous juggernaut on the other wing- richard reti likened it to a hollywood film drama where the heroine is tied to a rail track and the hero dashes nail bitingly to rescue her in time.

until something superior comes along this is the best book on pillsbury and there is no doubt that his games are still full of instruction and can impart sheer pleasure at the vigour and clarity of his onslaughts.

Since its debut in 1994, Mike Mignola's Hellboy has been one of the most celebrated comics on the shelves. Mignola has won every major industry award for his work, and attracted the attention of Hollywood for a series of jobs on high-profile films, including Disney's Atlantis and Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula. Now the director he teamed with on Blade II, Guillermo del Toro, brings Mignola's creation to the big screen, and Dark Horse provides a unique look into this moment in comics-to-film history.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "Art of..." movie book!.......2004-07-05

I was unfamiliar with the world of Hellboy prior to seeing the movie. When I did and when I ordered this book, I was blown away by the wealth of visual richness that inhabit the Hellboy universe. Being a collector of "Art of..." books, I realized that the strength of Hellboy lies in the visual galore. The book is fully detailed with drawings from every level of production as well as the closeness of working atmosphere between the filmakers and the creator of the original material not commonly known in Hollywood.

My only gripe in this book is that the structuring is kinda messed up and confusing, since the book mixes up the art section with the script.

5 out of 5 stars Mignola and del Toro and Barlowe, oh my.......2004-05-16

Besides a complete shooting script and lots of commentary, this has tons of illustrations and concept art done by all the artists involved in the movie. It's wonderful to see Mike Mignola's and Wayne Barlowe's sketches following the development of all the various Hellboy monsters, characters and environments, and lots of stuff that didn't make it into the movie. A must for any fan of the film.

A must have for art, comic and production design lovers, has lots new designs by Mignola Barlowe and other great artists including the prop makers. Includes beautiful pages illustrating both concept and the picture of the final prop supported by the commentaries and thinkings of the artist involved in the creation of that specific prop. It also includes the final shooting script, and images from Guillermo del Toro's notebook which are nice sketches and annotations depicting the first idea behind the final design of each character. Great!!! one of the best, just do not read it before watching the movie.

This book may seem appealing to people just starting to learn Magic, but it isn't the best choice. It includes extremely simple strategies that even beginners would know, sample deck ideas (which come with every booster pack of Portal you buy), and pictures of every portal card. Having all of the cards in the set in one book is the best part, but the Official Encyclopedia Volume 2 has Portal, Mirage, Visions, Weatherlight, and 5th Edition card pictures and costs only $10 more. So instead of buying this, save your money for the encyclopedia Vol. 2, or just buy another starter deck.

Contending that our increasingly complicated corporate universe has made it more difficult for companies to grow and prosper, noted business strategist Jack Trout and communications consultant Steve Rivkin have proposed a radical new tack: simplicity. By boiling everything down to its essential elements, they maintain, managers can ignore new fads and hot consultants and instead focus on the true business at hand. Fascinating in its own unpretentious, logical manner, The Power of Simplicity is their stripped-down guide to a future without chaos and disorder. Addressing the basics involved as well as specific management, leadership, and people issues, they hit a variety of applicable themes--including information, competitors, mission statements, goals, and motivation--using short individual chapters that quickly get to the heart of the matter with a few germane anecdotes and expert quotes followed by suggestions that are both coherent and feasible. Each begins with an inspirational epigram by the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Malcolm Forbes, and even Mother Goose, and concludes with a Simple Summation, such as this one on strategy: "If you're not different, you'd better have a lower price." --Howard Rothman

              Book Description

Renowned marketing expert and best-selling author Jack Trout has a message for managers who are struggling to keep up with today’s ever-changing business climate: “Keep It Simple.” In this paperback edition of The Power of Simplicity, Trout advocates the importance of paying attention to the basics and simplifying processes in order to stay focused on the core business at hand. Through case studies and interviews with successful executives, he shows managers how to cut through jargon, articulate their vision, and regain control of the vital elements of their business in order to make it thrive. According to Trout, the things that propose to streamline companies, like the ubiquitous “mission statements,” often end up bogging down operations by introducing unnecessary complexity where a straightforward approach may be more effective. Trout cites Southwest Airlines, Intel, and Kohl’s department stores among others as successful companies that have rejected showy trappings in favor of simplification.

              5 out of 5 stars A counter-cultural voice of reason.......2006-06-12

Jack Trout's books on marketing and brand positioning (with Al Reis) have a deep resonance with many readers. A big reason is that they are clearly written with a simple message that is readily understood. Trout expands this concept of the importance of simplicity in this book beyond marketing and applies it to business in general. In it, he gives a refreshing, counter-cultural voice opposed to all the laborious guru-hype, endless buzzwords and MBA-babble - that too often only adds complexity without adding value. Trout quotes Jack Welch on this idea: "Insecure managers create complexity. Real leaders have the self-confidence to be clear, precise and to be sure every person in their organization understands what the business is trying to achieve."

In an entertaining and often-sarcastic tone, Trout goes after many deeply-ingrained business practices to expose their unhelpful complexity: LONG-TERM PLANNING (mere wishful thinking), GOALS (sound nice but can hinder emerging opportunities), GROWTH (those mandated 15% projections can lead to terrible long-term consequences) and those cumbersome MISSION STATEMENTS (add needless confusion). What may be most comforting for those who value a common-sense approach is how Trout stands up for the simple, obvious idea. But, in our high-tech, over-analyzed age, such simplicity can sound ... well, too simple. As such people in business often fear speaking up and being viewed as "an unsophisticated simpleton" lacking the latest analytical models. But, Trout encourages businesses not to fear that which is simple, but to embrace its wisdom and guiding light. His many relevant examples of success and failure help paint an effective picture. In all, Jack Trout is a refreshing voice of reason in a world beset by budensome complexity. Practitioners of gut instincts and old-fashioned common-sense should love this book. 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars I TEACH PEOPLE spiritually HOW TO LIVE YOUNG AND FLOURISH, not COMPLICATE their lives with guru worship! .......2006-05-07

Give it to them plain and simple as Trout says. They will feel comfortable with following a leader who gets on their level, but will be intimidated a speaker who speaks in tongues...

I lead people to live young and flourish through simple strategies, not kill them with complicated terms and alien metaphors like a wizard guru.

4 out of 5 stars Should a part of management and engineering training.......2005-09-18

Most young Engineers and MBAs are more into hype and complexity than into solving engineering/business problems in a simplistic manner.

How many of us in our universities have been influenced, inspired by complexities of business and engineering ? Many of them even took the path of making their job seem complex and continued on their career - totally deviating from the basic objectives of why their jobs existed in the first place.

After 10 years in Software and consulting, when I read this book, it feels very much like reaffirming the basics of any work and business objectives.

              Positives of this book:
              * Reaffirms that most problems are to be simplistically analyzed and addressed
              * Simplify your communication and reduce the clutter and hype

              Negatives:
              * Being simple does not always take you a long way - maybe in engineering, but definitely not in management. Ever heard of a manager who speaks up simplistically and been very successful ?
              * The auther talks about being simplistic in communication, but has totally ignored the fact that communication is always good when it well wrapped and well packaged.
              * Is simplicity always good when you are selling stuff ? People like the mystery behind complexity. While complexity itself does not sell, the mystery behind complex words does sell. Would you buy a Washine machine which has 'Fuzzy Logic' or would you buy the one that has 'Automatic Load Detection' ? Obviously the one with Fuzzy Logic - it kind of sounds cool and complex, even though you do not know whats in it.

3 out of 5 stars some new useful material.......2004-12-29

Several ideas and examples are drawn from the authors' earlier work on positioning, 22 immutable laws of marketing, and bottom-up marketing. There were a few ideas that are worth chewing on. For example, per Trout, success is often riding the right horse. Both hard work and intelligence are long shots, finding fast-growing successful companies is a long-shot; finding a successful product is a medium shot; finding a person with successful career trajectory and hitching your career to theirs is a more reliable way of duplicating success. Others such as avoiding all recent advances in technology may be a little simple-minded and perhaps, unnecessary in the end.

              2 out of 5 stars Good Title...poor book.......2004-12-17

I really wish this book did not have so many grammatical errors because I believe people need to simplify their life, but this book insults the reader's intelligence. If a well-respected author like Jack Trout is going to attach his name to a piece of writing he should make sure it is readable. In addition, this book seems to be choppy in its central theme. I do not remember the authors addressing the idea of simplicity throughout the whole book. The central concept was lost somewhere among Jack Trout's tirades to the business professional.
