Book Description

ALLTEL was formed in 1983 when Allied and Mid-Continent merged their businesses. Allied, formed by brothers-in-law Hugh Wilbourn and Charlie Miller, and Mid-Continent, led by Weldon Case, were diamonds in the rough, and this was in no small part due to the remarkable leadership qualities of the men who guided them. Even before the companies combined, a new leader was emerging, Joe Ford, whose vision and intelligence would lead ALLTEL to become a $7 billion communications company that served more than ten million customers in twenty-four states. And ALLTEL would achieve all this while still retaining the values on which it was founded: honesty, integrity, and a genuine desire to delight its customers.

The Legend of ALLTEL recounts the ingenuity, determination, and corporate strategy that have made ALLTEL a leader in communications. Meticulously researched and packed with telling photos, this comprehensive, highly readable history captures the essence of what it takes to survive and thrive in the fast-paced world of communications.

Book Description

Born in 1871 on Maine's Penobscot Indian reservation and nephew of a chief, Louis Sockalexis became professional baseball's first American Indian player. Ultimately, his prowess on the diamond inspired the nickname Cleveland's baseball team carries today. Baseball's First Indian explores the brilliant by too-brief major league career of the "Deerfoot of the Diamond" at the end of the 1890s, describes his fall to new England's minor leagues, and watches his final return to the reservation in Maine where he continued as a baseball coach and umpire.

Author Ed Rice's fascinating study of the life of Louis Sockalexis is filled with game-by-game action and leavened by the flamboyant and colorful stories of nineteenth-century sportswriters who frequently invented what the truth would not supply. Every student of baseball history will treasure "Baseball's First Indian".

5 out of 5 stars Take This One Home!.......2003-09-19

This new book by Ed Rice has everything--stats, rare photos of Louis Sockalexis and Hall-of-Famers such as "Cy" Young and Jesse Burkett, and game-by-game summaries. We learn about "Sock's" short, brilliant career as an outfielder with an arm like a rifle and the fastest feet in the league. But too much drinking and an ankle injury ruined Louis's speed and fielding. He was let go after 3 seasons and drifted around the minor leagues. Occasionally he played well but he never regained his former brilliance.

Sockalexis went home to Maine and worked as a logger and ferry operator. He also stopped drinking, and earned respect as an umpire for the rough Maine leagues. "Coach Sockalexis" taught young Penobscots the game and proudly sent five of them to the New England League.

Ed Rice gives us a nice glimpse into "Sock's" later years when he was much admired by friends and colleagues. His fellow tribesmen honor him to this day as a great athlete. Enjoy this interesting bio as you count the days to spring training!

5 out of 5 stars This Book's a Home Run!.......2003-09-02

This is the story of Louis Sockalexis, the first Indian ballplayer who had a great college career but fizzled out in the majors. Maine author Ed Rice tells us all about this player who became a national sensation in one short season. This exciting bio is crammed with baseball lore and play-by plays of Sockalexis's games with Holy Cross and the early Cleveland Indians. Without TV or radio, the fans had to imagine Sock's sizzling throws to the plate from deep right field and hot line drives. He was so fast he could steal bases at will. He had to face war whoops and taunting crowds, but like Jackie Robinson, he just quietly played the game. Sadly, drinking cut his career short but he holds a special place in baseball history as a pioneer and great player who could have become a champion if he'd lasted long enough. This book makes great reading during baseball season!

5 out of 5 stars This One's a Hit!.......2003-08-17

This has been a remarkable year for books about Louis Sockalexis, the long-forgotten nineteenth century Penobscot outfielder. When he was signed with the Cleveland national team, he became the first Indian to play in the major leagues.

This book by Maine author Ed Rice tells Sock's story from a local point of view as well as extensively covering his outstanding career at Holy Cross and games with Cleveland, before drink and injury destroyed his career. Sockalexis broke the color barrier fifty years before Jackie Robinson, but his love of the high life and the overwhelming pressures of racism led him astray.

Mr. Rice's book is lavishly illustrated and vividly recreates the rough-and-tumble world of nineteenth-century baseball. The author also describes Sock's career in the minors, where he played better than people think, and his final years on Indian Island as a well-respected baseball coach and umpire.
This is a great piece of Americana and a must-read for baseball fans everywhere!

5 out of 5 stars A Baseball Pioneer.......2003-08-12

For years, Louis Sockalexis wasn't much more than a trivia question: who were the Cleveland Indians named for? Now there are THREE new books about him.

"Sock" was an outstanding athlete in his time and showed great promise. If drink hadn't ruined his major league career, he could have ranked as one of the all-time greats. Still, he deserves to be remembered as a baseball pioneer, the first Native American player not long after the Wild West was still killing off Indians. He had to put up with rough treatment from the crowds, but it didn't seem to bother him. In fact, he was well-liked by nearly everyone--too much, sad to say. Everyone wanted to buy him a round, and he loved to party. Finally, a foot injury wrecked his playing for good.

Ed Rice, a Maine author, includes a nice local view of Sockalexis's later life and interviews with people who knew him. There are fond memories and funny anecdotes about Sock, who never lost his ability to throw like a cannon or hit the ball out of the park. He coached a Penobscot team and sent five players to the New England leagues. He was such a good umpire you didn't dare argue with him. His last years were quiet but he always kept up with the latest news on baseball. They say when he died, he had clippings from his magical rookie year in his pocket. He's buried on Indian Island near Bangor, Maine, where fellow Mainers and visitors from all over can pay their respects to "Baseball's First Indian."

This is an outstanding book--I give it two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars An Angel in the Outfield.......2003-08-12

For part of one magical season in 1897, Louis Sockalexis, "Baseball's First Indian," had wings on his feet in the outfield. The fastest runner in the country, he ran down line drives and made spectacular diving catches followed by bullet-like throws to the plate. He went on a hot hitting streak that seemed unstoppable. Though he was showered with racial abuse at first, he soon won over the crowds with his calm demeanor and easy smile. It helped that he was rugged and handsome. If only the magic had lasted!

Louis had an alcohol addiction that soon made itself known. It wrecked his career when he injured himself and lost his lightning-quick speed and reflexes. The Cleveland Spiders (now Indians) gave him several chances to shape up, but he couldn't stop drinking. Finally they let him go in 1899. He drank himself off several minor league teams as well but occasionally showed flashes of his former brilliance. He played one complete season with the Lowell Tigers, posting a .288 average. In 1902 he went home to Indian Island for good. He quit drinking and won respect as an umpire and coach for Penobscot youths who were proud to learn from the best.

Of the three new books on Sockalexis, this one by Ed Rice is the most complete, covering each game of "Sock's" career and giving us a close look at his last years among his tribesmen, who honor his memory to this day. Mr. Rice grew up in Maine with the legend of Sockalexis close by, and decided many years ago his story was worth telling. This book is a remarkable portrait of a gifted ballplayer who's finally getting the attention he deserves.

Book Description

Louis Sockalexis, a Penobscot Indian from Maine, was one of the greatest college baseball stars of the 1890s. Following his days playing for Holy Cross and Notre Dame, he went directly into the major leagues with Cleveland's National League team in 1897, becoming the first of his race to play in the majors and the first minority athlete to play in the National League.

This is a complete biography of Sockalexis, known during his playing days as "Chief of Sockem" and "Deerfoot of the Diamond." For three months, Sockalexis batted well over .300, hit home runs, and made incredible throws from the outfield, but he found it difficult to adjust to playing in the major leagues. He often found himself the object of ridicule and hatred from sportswriters and fans in other cities. Sockalexis began drinking heavily and was suspended by the Cleveland team for playing while intoxicated. His alcoholism brought his career to an unfortunate and premature end in 1899, and he died in 1913 at the age of 42. Shortly after his death, Cleveland's American League team was named the Indians and Chief Wahoo was adopted as its mascot, something that has sparked controversy in recent years and brought attention to Sockalexis once again.

5 out of 5 stars He Could Have Been a Contender.......2003-06-05

One of baseball's most tragic figures is the nineteenth-century outfielder, Louis Sockalexis, who rose to national fame in a few short months and fell just as quickly due to what David Fleitz calls "the pernicious effects of alcohol."

The handsome, likable Sockalexis was the best college athlete in the nation for two years, quickly attracting attention for his dazzling speed and powerful throwing arm. He was recruited by Cleveland in 1897. The first recognized Native American to play in the major leagues, Sockalexis had to endure taunting war whoops from the crowds and endless gibes from the press, even as he won over the fans who saw him play.

David Fleitz' compassionate, concise account is very readable and well-illustrated, covering Sockalexis' brilliant rise and tragic fall from the majors. With his talents, he could have been one of the greatest players of all time but caved in to pressure and high living.

If the Cleveland Indians really want to honor their first Indian, they could dump Chief Wahoo and award scholarships to promising Indian students. Or better yet, rename their park Sockalexis Stadium!

5 out of 5 stars Setting the Record Straight.......2003-01-20

A very good book on a forgotten baseball warrior whose career was cut short due to his human frailities. One of many baseball players who have suffered from alcohol abuse. Mr. Fleitz has woven a very interesting biography of one of baseball's sad pasts. If you have ever heard of the legend of this Cleveland Indian, here is an opportunity to discover the real story. A must read for those interested in 19th Century baseball.

    Book Description

Understanding Theology and Popular Culture is one of the first books to give a complete overview of the key issues and methods in this field of study. It provides a clear introduction to key theories and debates for those new to the subject, as well as developing a useful discussion and overview for more advanced researchers. Drawing on original case studies ranging from Eminem to The Simpsons, the text examines the nature and functions of popular culture, and presents a reasoned argument about the distinctive contribution that theology can make to popular culture studies.

5 out of 5 stars A Creative and Helpful Overview of the Field.......2005-11-26

Many theologians write about "popular culture," either directly or indirectly, but theology has been lacking a text that would help situate the larger field of studies in religion and popular culture. Lynch has written such a text: a map for theologians interested in the contemporary debates, as well as a proposal for a theological development of the key questions.

This book makes some very important contributions: foregrounding the importance of theological debates in the correlational tradition for pop culture/theology work; holding out the dignity of the experimental moment in which the "field" finds itself, mirrored in the trifecta of readings of pop culture artifacts in the latter part of the book; introducing the significance of judgment for pop culture/theology work; and strongly joining theological analysis of pop culture to the problematic of the everyday. That's a lot of boulders moved forward in about 200 pages.

I have some questions about whether and how the problem of "normativity" is the best way to describe the ethical impasse Lynch narrates in the field today. Still, this is an excellent book for helping theologians catch up to where the current debates are, or as a text for students to help them see how a seemingly simple task--asking how God and culture relate--is so complicated.

In this historical overview of Western civilization, Dr. Rogers traces the theological and philosophical forces that shaped Western culture. From the beginnings of Judaism 4,000 years ago to the Greeks 2,500 years ago, to Christianity's confrontation with and transformation of the Roman Empire, through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the establishment of America, and the emergence of the postmodern perspective, it has been the dynamic tension between the Judeo-Christian tradition, Classical Philosophy, and the philosophical perspectives that emerged from it, that has shaped the American worldview, making us who we are.

Without such understanding, attempts to provide direction may not be heard and may even be misguided. Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Good Reading.......2000-11-27

For me this book was somewhat of a revelation on what I went through during my teen years. I am sure this book would have helped my parents deal with what I went through a great deal had they read it while I was in high school. In this book, Mueller attempts to show parents, youth workers, and anyone who cares about teens what they are experiencing during those tumultuous years between thirteen and nineteen. Mueller introduces his reader to the material aiming mostly at parents of teenagers; this required me as a reader to always be asking how does this affect my ministry, or my students. While this was mostly helpful it would generally be a better guide for parents than youth workers. He then goes on to talk about teens and how they are influenced by music, the media, and how parents should help their teens navigate through this complicated web of adolescence. Although a little bit out of step with today's fads, Mueller's points hit the right chords and can still be applied today. I again found myself having to switch my frame of reference to make the examples current. The author then dives into looking at what pressures teens face today from peer pressure, to love and relationships including sex, and popular culture as a whole. He turns from those topics into drug and substance abuse and depression and the state of teen's psyche. Mueller brings his book together in a fairly good fashion by helping to show parents how to point their children towards Christ. I really enjoyed how Mueller had practical ideas for parents at the end of each chapter. There is nothing worse than a book on a topic that does not offer practical advice, but Mueller did not leave this important part out. I would like to use Muller's practical opinions on the media and its influence on teens to do a Sunday school series on how the media can influence teens and what they need to do to be aware of what is swirling around them at all times. I think we underestimate the power of the media and Mueller softly reminds us of how we need to be vigilant as to what we put into our heads, consciously or unconsciously. The author's practical applications prodded this reader to look at where I could make a small dent in these influences, or at least make my students more aware of what is going on around them. I did find the statistics the author used to be somewhat closed to the evangelical community. I think in order to have a more balanced use of evidence Muller could have opened his eyes up to some more secular statistics and surveys, hopefully to balance out the information he received. In general this book was helpful and practical. I would recommend it to parents of students in my youth group, with the simple caveat of changing the examples to current examples as much as possible.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for parents, teachers, anyone working with kids.......1999-01-22

Walt's book is a must have for anyone who is working with young people - whether they are parents, teachers, youth pastors, coaches, etc. This book contains a very balanced, level-headed approach to youth culture, going way beyond the surface. Walt takes a much-needed hard look at the reasons kids engage various media. Anyone struggling to make sense of the adolescent sub-culture will appreciate Walt's window into a world too many people ignore. One of the best features of the book is the way the author weaves in issues of adolescent development and spirituality into the discussions about youth culture and the problems facing many kids. Parents will especially appreciate the way Walt provides some "hands on" ways of constructively interacting with their children.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best overviews of American youth culture........1998-09-01

Obviously, the person who wrote the above evaluation has his doctorate of youth culture studies and therefore, didn't gain much from the book. I read the book as a youth worker of 19 years and father of 4 teenage sons. The book not only grasps what is means to be an adolescent but how both parents and youth workers can benefit. The thing I enjoy most about the book is that it accurately describes what many of our Canadian youth are going through as well. It is mandatory reading in the Youth Culture classes that I teach in Toronto and recommended reading for all the parents that I deal with in the parenting adolescent seminars that I teach. The key to the greatness of the book is for youth workers and parents alike to apply what they have learned. Unlike the evaluator above, I am not afraid to leave my name.

3 out of 5 stars Issues among teens in the early to mid 1990s.......1998-07-31

Mueller's book goes into detail about many aspects of the youth culture of the early and mid 1990s. He does this in a way that it is speaking directly to the parent of a youth, however the book claims it is useful for all who work for youth, which it is, if one can get over the direct speaking to parents.

The first few chapters of the book basically serve as an introduction to the rest of the book, bracing the reader for what is to come. Mueller gives some statistics about the youth culture and also gives some examples of what he feels is wrong in the culture. He follows this by patting the parent on the back for reading his book by mentioning that parents need to know their teen's culture. By reading the book, a parent is beginning to get involved in the culture. Mueller lists some other ways of getting into the culture, such as watching youth in a mall or listening and observing their teens with their friends. One item which Mueller doesn't mention which I hav! e found very helpful in understanding the teen culture is reading their magazines. Just go to a local newsstand and purchase a few magazines which target the audience. For boys, this will often be skating, music, and wrestling magazines. For girls, pick up some dream-teen and lifestyle magazines.

The book includes discussion on a wide variety of issues in the teen culture today. These include a lengthy, but not complete, discussion on music and media, sex, peer pressure, materialism, drugs, and depression and suicide. Each section provides a background of the issue, with many documented, although not necessarily scientific and well researched, studies conducted among youth. At or near the end of each chapter is some often helpful advice to parents on how to deal with the particular issue among their own children. This advice is often both biblical and practical.

There are several areas of concern to this reviewer about the book. One already mentioned is the inclus! ion of some studies which may not reveal accurate results. ! Many of these studies come from conservative Christian organizations which may limit the audience of the participants within the study. They may also not take a scientific approach, choosing instead to first have a conclusion and then prove it, rather than gather statistics then coming to a conclusion. This is only a possibility. I am likely making a bigger deal out of this than is warranted. All the studies may indeed be accurate.

In his discussion on music, Mueller lists many types of music and gives a description on how it may influence a youth negatively. Rarely does he look at how music may influence a youth positively. I was surprised that he completely left out any discussion of Christian Hit Radio style music, which while often times theologically lacking or inaccurate, does provide a positive message. Mueller fails to mention such musical styles as new age or smooth jazz, classical, country, and oldies. One may think that this type of music would not need! to be mentioned as teens don't listen to these styles. However, it has been this reviewer's experience that many do listen to these styles on at least an occasional basis.

The reader would be better off reading another source about suicide. While the reasons a person may contemplate suicide are quite well done, Mueller's facts, figures, and logic do not correspond to an accurate view of suicide. On a side note, in chapter 12, Mueller asserts that the adolescent chooses to be depressed. Depression is just but one reason an adolescent may consider suicide. I have researched the topic of suicide in the past, and Mueller's dealings with the subject matter make me feel less comfortable with Mueller's discussion on other matters.

While the above may seem as though the book is not good, it in fact is good. The summaries of the issues were, for the most part, well done. I very much feel that the sections on what parents can do to help their youth in this turbulent time wer! e great. There are too many books that give you the summar! ies of the issues but leave one hanging on what to do about those issues. The discussion on materialism I found to be quite informative. This is actually a large problem in today's middle and upper class families, both for the youth and the adults. Even though the problem is so widespread, the issue is rarely discussed. I applaud Mueller's decision to include this section. I also applaud Mueller's humility in admitting that even he falls to materialism quite often.

Who is this book geared for? I read it as a youth minister, and I don't find much new in it. I don't believe a parent would find anything new in the book either. However, the book does serve as a reminder of many topics, and may help start discussion on the issues between adults in youth. The discussion starter aspect of the book makes it useful for both parents and in ministry.

The book is a worthwhile read if only to get an overview and reminder of what a teenager in this world faces. It is to easy! to write off a teen as a hopeless cause or the behavior as just being teenage behavior which will be grown out of. This book will help the adult remember their own teen years as well as help in understanding the world in which the teen lives in today.

          Book Description

A Brief Introduction to the New Testament is a concise and more pedagogical version of Bart D. Ehrman's best-selling The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings, 3/e. Retaining the approach of the longer textbook while condensing and simplifying much of its material, this volume looks at the New Testament from a consistently historical and comparative perspective and emphasizes the rich diversity of the earliest Christian literature. Rather than shying away from the critical problems presented by these books, Ehrman addresses the historical and literary challenges they pose. He shows why scholars continue to argue over such significant issues as how the books of the New Testament came into being, what they mean, and how they relate to contemporary Christian and non-Christian literature. Distinctive to this study is its emphasis on the historical, literary, and religious milieu of the Greco-Roman world, including early Judaism. Features: * Covers the fundamentals of New Testament scholarship in an engaging style, making challenging material easily understandable to undergraduates in introductory courses * Retains the numerous pedagogical devices from the longer textbook: "What to Expect" and "At a Glance" boxes introduce and provide summaries of the material covered in each chapter "Something to Think About" and "Some More Information" boxes offer thought-provoking asides * Adds new study aids: Key Terms (each appearing in boldface the first time it is used), Questions for Study and Reflection, and a greatly expanded Glossary * Offers streamlined coverage--this volume is nine chapters shorter than The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the New Testament, 3/e * Includes a full-color eight-page insert on archaeology * A Student Website contains chapter summaries, guides for reading, and self-quizzes An Instructor's Manual provides chapter summaries, student reading guides, pedagogical suggestions, and exam questions and answers Ideal for undergraduate and seminary classes in the New Testament, Biblical Studies, and Christian Origins, A Brief Introduction to the New Testament is an accessible, clearly written introduction that encourages students to consider the historical issues surrounding these writings.
