    Book Description

The story describes the journey of one man through 30 years of martial arts training. From the first karate class with a newly arrived Japanese instructor in 1971, he goes on to study with eminent martial artist of today. Among them are, Toyotaro Miyazaki, the nationally rated competitor of the 60’s and 70’s described by Chuck Norris as one of his toughest opponents, and Ken Ogawa one of the toughest fighters to come out of Morio Higaonna’s Yoyogi dojo. The other instructors are Kiyoshi Yamazaki, trainer and choreographer for Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Conan movies and Joko Ninomiya, All Japan Kyokushin Champion and creator of the Sabaki Challenge tournament. Memorable moments depict meetings at the AAU Nationals with notables as Billy Blanks, Mr. Tae Bo, and Chuck Merriman. As a young student in the traditional Shotokan system, this narrative chronicles the transition to the eclectic modern training methods. This evolution was the result of hard-earned lessons in real life encounters while working as a Miami Police Officer on the mid-night shift.

    5 out of 5 stars STEADY TRAINING - FANTASTIC, FOCUSED & FUN.......2004-02-24

This is not only a MUST READ, it's a WILL READ AGAIN book!

STEADY TRAINING chronicles and focuses on the author's 30-year experience as a Martial Arts student, teacher and devotee. It includes detailed stories about the world-famous instructors who have made their mark in his life and in the sport. The book is quite easy-to-read because it lacks the technical mumbo jumbo that other books on this subject are frequently bogged down with. Getting to know the author through his thoughts, reflections and experiences is an added bonus. Through experienced description and anecdote, the author shares comprehensive, practical information about his life and how he came to discover and love the martial arts. He freely shares what he has learned because of the sport, also. The book is rich in nuance and critical sensibility. In his own, personal way Antonio Bustillo effectively communicates what students often may have wanted to know, but have never read. Frequent humorous stories dot this thoroughly entertaining "can't-put-it-down" book which contribute to making the reading fun, educational and informative. "Steady Training" is one of the better books on the market about life, discipline, people and martial arts which also includes a peek into the author's past job as a City of Miami police officer. Antonio Bustillo is an incredibly gifted writer who no doubt, will not stop at this, his debut publication. Hats off to you, Kahuna. You done good!

5 out of 5 stars From the heart.......2002-09-16

With its plain yellow jacket and simple title, "Steady Training" by Antonio Bustillo seemed that it would be a drowsy wandering through a long list of the author's techniques and teachers. My presumption was quickly negated by the third paragraph in the preface - this book is an exciting ride through the different emotions that can drive a man to dedicate his life to training in the martial arts and some of the resultant experiences.

This book start out describing Antonio's early days of "blood and guts" training in Shotokan. The first few chapters are reminiscent of the "Empty Hand" books by Stan Schmidt. The autobiography takes an appealing turn as the author describes some of the dangers that can arise while venturing into a foreign school with the honest goal of joining. He and his brother were intending to train at a local karate school after moving to Venezuela. Antonio made the initial blunder of declaring and asserting his black belt rank at this new school, which incurred the wrath of this self-righteous group. Over his few weeks there, he fought through the different challenges. After an encounter which left one of the group's brown-belts with a broken knee, Antonio was wisely advised by an acquaintance to stop training there. This was a lesson that seemed to have stuck very well, and Antonio gives many examples of similar "new guy" scenarios.

Along similar lines, we are presented with quite a few stories of braggarts with extravagant claims. I felt a satisfying warmth in my belly as he describes how some of these charlatans have their lies exposed, mostly by being trounced. In the opening story Antonio describes a trumpeter he met before a seminar that he was running with a friend at a kung-fu school. The student did not know them by name and so they were treated to a condescending description of the "bad-ass" instructors who would be presenting that day. Additionally, he waxed vauntingly about his own top ranking in the class as well as his innate ability to intimidate people. His superior attitude continued on through the seminar and this student found himself on the receiving end of dojo justice.

Some might be quick to dismiss the author as a belligerent lug-head who is hell-bent on establishing his superiority in the realm of physical combat, but I would beg to differ. Antonio clearly describes that there are many ways of administering discipline within the realms of a martial arts school. In the chapters outlining his time as a police officer, he gives examples which testify to his sensitivity to matching different levels of violence accordingly - as opposed to meeting each affront with ruthless cruelty.

At times, I found myself empathetic towards our author. At others I felt embarrassed, as his stories caused me to look contemplatively at my own thoughts, feelings, and expressions. I feel this book has helped me think more clearly about why I choose to train in the martial arts. If you are a martial artist or are considering venturing down this path, you should read this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2002-04-09

The thing I hated the most about reading this book is not
being able to put it down.It is that good, from the very first
chapter this book grabs you and doesn't let you go ,it really
feels like you are actualy there from antonios beginnings in karate to his real life confrontations on the streets as a miami police officer.

    great buy******

My best to you and yours Sensei

    5 out of 5 stars A knockout!.......2002-04-03

Steady Training is an honest and entertaining account of one man's journey to find the truth through the martial arts. Mr. Bustillo is able to do something which is both very difficult and very rare; he has managed to combine the enthusiasm of a beginner with the experience of a seasoned and experienced martial artist; truely he exemplifies the virtue of Shoshin, or beginner's mind.
Buy this book, you won't regret it.

A reasonable book on various tv/movie cars shown in decent color and B&W photos.Informative enough to please most people.Cars like the "Dukes of hazard" Dodge chargers,"Green hornet",cars from various "James Bond" movies and so on.If you want to know more about these cars this book is ideal. The only thing was not enough cars and a bit light on for information.

3 out of 5 stars Nice start...but please, more details.......2001-11-10

Hollywood TV and Movie Cars tries to take the wraps off of some of the unsung stars of film and television...the cars that transported, tormented, and drove the heroes of film.
Thankfully, it doesn't spend a lot of time on cars that have already had their moment of printed glory...namely the Batmobile, Munster's Coach and other creations of Hollywood's "Kustom King" George Barris (see the book "Barris TV and Movie Cars").
Insteda the book gives you the rundown (no pun intended on some other stars...the James Bond cars, the race cars of the Great Race, LeMans, and Grand Prix, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, along with TV cars like the Monkeemobile, Then Came Bronson's Harley, Starsky and Hutch's Torino, and for the first time anywhere...a personal favorite...the George Barris' 1914 Stutz Bearcat replicas built for the forgotten series "Bearcats!".
But some of the research seems superficial...the info on Bronson's bike came straight from a web site, and the Bond Cars and Chitty Chitty...don't go into a lot of detail about the number of cars made or their eventual fate. In the case of a couple of cars, the information is either incomplete (the fact Magnum drove two different Ferrarri's...when one was destroyed by a bomb, it gave the producers and the Italian car company a chance to upgrade the PI to the latest model) or just plain wrong (the number of Black Beautys).
Also, too many photos come from old archieves..it would have
been nice to see more of thesurviving cars as they appear today...something that was done for the Bearcat, Torino, and the Green Hornet's Black Beauty.
Given space limitations, some cars were left out.. or mentioned only in an afterwood to each chapter that says what cars were used in a partcular project..some of those cars could have perhaps been included some of the stars got a bit less space..do we really need a 2 page B&W publicity shot of the Green Hiornet's car or two virtualy identical photos of Bronson on his bike?
I don't mean to be too picky, but this book could have really been something with a bit more work (and luck finding some of the admittedly hard to find cars).
Let's hope for an expanded and revised second edition.

        Book Description

J.R.R. Tolkien's novels of Middle-earth – The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and The Silmarillian – have become some of the most famous, and most beloved, literary works of the twentieth century. And the Lord of the Rings films by director Peter Jackson have re-ignited interest in Tolkien and his works, as well as introduced his stories to a new generation of fans.

Even if you've never read the novels and have only seen the films, you know that the world of Middle-earth is a complicated one. Tolkien took great care in representing this world, from creating new languages to including very particular cultural details that add to the richness of the world's fabric. Many other books have been written about Tolkien and his works, but none have come close to providing the kind of reference needed to comprehend the world of Middle-earth. That's what veteran Dummies author and unabashed Tolkien fan Greg Harvey attempts to do in The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies.

As the author says in his introduction to the book, this is not an encyclopedia or quick guide to all the diverse beings, languages, and history that make up Tolkien's Middle-earth. Nor is it a set of plot outlines for the novels. Rather, what you'll find in The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies is a basic guide to some of the possible linguistic and mythological origins of Middle-earth, plus a rudimentary analysis of its many themes and lessons for our world. This book can help enrich your reading (or re-reading) of Tolkien's novels, and it will challenge you to think about the themes inherent in Tolkien's Middle-earth and their implications in your own life.

Here's just a sampling of the topics you'll find covered in The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies:

So, whether you're reading Tolkien's novels or watching the films for the first time, or you've been a fan for many years and are looking for a new take on Tolkien's works, The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies can help you enhance your reading or viewing experience for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Special Book for Christians and Tolkien Fans.......2007-09-09

This is a special book for Christians and Tolkien fans. The author, Greg Harvey (a committed Buddhist) not only reveals the mythological Origins of Tolkien's Middle Earth but is just as faithful to Tolkien's beliefs to reveal the Christian origins of Tolkien's Middle Earth. Even as a committed Buddhist the author without a hint of any skepticism reveals the central role of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection to not only the life outlook of Tolkien but to the world view of the inhabitants of middle earth. I think his best verse that describes the common angst shared by the people of middle earth and us can be found on pg. 231 of Chapter 16: "Tolkien may be trying to give us a way to hear the Music of Creation and thereby know its Composer. In ennobling his characters and showing how some of them can maintain hope in the darkness of their pre-Christian world, he may be signaling a possible way for us to follow in our post-Christian one." The book is also written with a good grain of humor, wit, reverence and fondness. Highly recommended reference.

2 out of 5 stars Good with Tolkien's Details, but Not with Tolkien's Themes.......2007-04-22

A well-written and informative introduction to Middle-earth, but sadly the product of an author bending a classic to his will. Other authors using Tolkien's works as a springboard for religious conversation entitle their books accordingly. If I buy a book called, 'Finding God in the Lord of the Rings,' I know what to expect. Not so with Harvey. Better to call the book, 'Finding Comparative Religion and Philosophy in Tolkien's Middle-earth.' Harvey calls his approach 'hermeneutics', which is as useful to the analysis of Middle-earth themes as a bicycle is to a fish and serves to tarnish the bright silver themes Tolkien wove into the narrative.

To better understand Tolkien's themes, read Tolkien's letters. Harvey drops hints throughout the book, reaching his thematic climax on pg. 232, second paragraph. In trying to write an essay open to all, he dilutes his argument fatally.

Buy this book for the evocative cover, or the well-written and valuable arrangement of information about Tolkien's people, places, and things. The charts and illustrations will illuminate the character relationships and Middle-earth geography. It does all that VERY VERY WELL!!! But if you're looking for clarification of Tolkien's thematic approach, go to his Letters.

        Namarie!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun information.......2007-04-16

We love this book. It's probably too "light" for a serious Tolkien scholar, but it has a lot of useful information presented briefly and simply. For just a reference book for the casual reader, I'd highly recommend it.

        1 out of 5 stars bleh x 5!.......2005-08-20

If someone wanted to write a book about Tolkien & Middle Earth, they should have researched a little better. Not *this* garbage! Tolkien was a CATHOLIC -- & a hard-liner at that. Catholic. Not Buddhist, not Pagan & certainly NOT Gnostic (sheesh! Some of this stuff in this book was hard to read because it was so WRONG)! Yes, he got some of his ideas from mythology (the myth part of the book is ok, I guess. But, there are so many *other* *better* books about myth out there than *this*... I know I've read better). But, the books are basically Catholic. Just read the Sil & you'll see what I mean! There's hardly *anything* in here about Tolkien's Catholic upbringing as it pertains to the books. If I want the *real* story on Tolkien & what he believed & wrote, I'll stick w/Tolkien's Letters & Joseph Pearce.

I shouldn't have bought this book, but... well, I'm a sucker for anything Tolkien.....

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, Full of Errors.......2005-01-22

I sat down in Borders and read this in half an hour. I am a huge Tolkien fan, and know all his works backward and forward, and this was such a terrible thing to see shelved in the bookstore. It mistranslates names, gets dates and events screwed up, and is simply a terrible reference material. If you want to know about Tolkien's Middle-earth, pick up Tolkien's books and *read* the things.

        Don't take this crappy short-cut.

Thousands and thousands of different direct mail packages are mailed every year.

A few are super successful. This book collects the cream of the crop. the "control" letters that made these companies fortunes over the years. And explains why they worked. Will cut decades off your learning curve.

You can use these time tested successes to duplicate. So that your own mailing will be a success. Shows all different types of formats for mailing. As well as different types of offers.

Two other recommended books to learn from are Herschell Gordon Lewis' "World's Greatest Direct Mail Sales Letters" and "The Greatest Direct Mail Sales Letters of all Time" by Richard S. Hodgson

But both of these are hard to find and expensive. Who knows how long Million Dollar Mailings will be available for?

However, there is a danger in that you'll see how stupid some of the marketing has been done, and is being done, by others in your company. You might get restless, run out the door and scream.

                  Worth it's weight in doubloons.

Caveat: Bean counters, and bean counters masquerading as marketers, will not understand this book. If all you send out are post cards and self mailers (ads with postage stamps), and you think they're effective, keep doing that. We true direct marketers will gleefully steal your lunch money with Mr. Hatch's assistance.

5 out of 5 stars An eye opener..........2007-02-12

Expensive, but definately worth it if you can afford it. Like others have said, don't expect a "how to" course on putting together a direct mail piece. However, the mail pieces included provide some real invaluable insights into what works (and there is a pattern).

The only thing I could add is that maybe some of the old control pieces could have been added so you could examine why they were beaten.

                  Otherwise - really top notch!
