Book Description
Now back in print: George Soros on funding and supporting the kind of grassroots democratic movements that helped bring down oppressive governments throughout the Communist bloc.
George Soros has done more for open societies than any other private citizen in the world. In Underwriting Democracy he describes his experiences helping to bring about democratic change in Eastern Europe--experiences that are especially relevant now that our country has begun to intervene (though in an entirely different way than Soros) to create functioning democracies. Throughout the 1980s George Soros worked to identify and fund the growing political movements that caused the downfall of Eastern Europe's Communist governments. He established foundations, first in his native Hungary, and then in eight other countries, and used them to finance everything from the installation of previously forbidden copying machines in public libraries to the creation of experimental schools, clubs, and workshops for the support of dissidents. This unprecedented, and brilliant, financial and logistical support helped to bring down the communist regimes in peaceful revolutions across the continent. These are thrilling stories about facing down-and getting past-the Communist party powers in order to change these nations from the inside out.

Advocating positive change .......2004-10-12
How can democracy be encouraged among the Soviets and in Eastern Europe? Underwriting Democracy: Encouraging Free Enterprise And Democratic Reform Among The Soviets And In Eastern Europe is a start, advocating positive change and using George Soros' own efforts in eastern Europe to describe how such changes may be fostered. Chapters examine America's foundation network, links between philosophy and practical democratic applications, and how Soros' early foray led to his acclaimed Open Society initiatives.
George Soros Describes His Pro-Democracy Activities.......2004-07-01
Underwriting Democracy is a reprint of the book that first appeared in 1991 as the former Soviet Union was spiraling into oblivion under Gorbachev. In the book, international speculator George Soros (best known for his successful run on the Pound a number of years ago) describes his activities in setting up foundations to encourage democracy in formerly communist countries, his attempts to advise on how to create new democracies in these countries and his philosophy for how thought and action can change the "normal" course of human events (which is to run to harmful extremes).
I have known a number of people who have funded foundations in formerly communist countries and the materials here ring true with what others have told me. There was usually an attempt to subvert the money for other purposes, a bureaucracy had to be avoided and there were many difficulties in putting funds to work in useful ways. Anyone thinking about encouraging governmental reform through nonprofit organizations can learn useful lessons from reading the first part of the book.
Throughout the book, Mr. Soros makes informed guesses about what will follow in each of the former communist countries. I was fascinated to see how well he understood the social and economic forces at the time . . . and how frequently he called the future quite accurately. Fortunately, his worst pessimism about what could happen in the former Soviet Union did not come to pass.
His attempts to help direct reform in the Soviet Union as an advisor come across as very optimistic, determined and naive. But sometimes Don Quixote can produce results where no one else can. He can at least feel good that he tried to help.
The least satisfactory part of the book is his explanation of the theory of reflexivity, which he describes in detail in part three. I think I followed the argument. It could have been stated much more simply and better explained with more government-related examples. The financial market examples are very clear.
At the end, I found myself wondering what nations could be doing today to encourage democracy in other areas where it has not done well. A number of helpful solutions are contained in a new book, Soft Power, which I encourage you to consider.
Soros was convicted of insider trading in 2002.......2004-05-22
Soros was convicted for insider trading in December 2002. He was convicted with the late Robert Maxwell and a few others. Maxwell jump of his huge yacht off of Europe after his billion dollar scam collapsed. Thousands of UK pensioners lost their life savings thanks to Soros pal Maxwell.
Ask quite a few people in Eastern Europe if they want Soros help in encoraging "Democratic Reform." They don't want the help of a convicted criminal.
False Rhetoric.......2004-03-18
Soros argues here that he helped fund democracy in order to 'open up' the economies of the eastern bloc, including Russia. Nevertheless any study of Soros's multi-billion dollar Hedge fund style investments will show that he has not only funded democracy but he has invested heavily in these countries to earn a profit. Keeping democracy alive mostly is in self interest to the Soros pocket book, rather then any benevolent idea of helping the 'people' of Eastern Europe, who mostly remain poor and starving, subjected to terror and mafia style corruption that did not exist under totalitarian Communism. In the end the people of Eastern Europe traded the false-god of Communism for the equally false-god of investment banking and cowboy capitalism, with Soros at the forefront.
A dangerous text full of self obsession and slight of hand regarding Soros's personal investments in these societies, smacking of conflict of interest.

Probably no other black cowboy has been as celebrated as Bill Pickett. A rodeo star, he has been honored with a postage stamp and has been the subject of a handful of books, including Bill Pickett, Bulldogger: The Biography of a Black Cowboy and Guts: Legendary Black Rodeo Cowboy Bill Pickett. Add to that list the children's book Bill Pickett: Rodeo Ridin' Cowboy by Andrea Pinkney. No matter how you feel about rodeo, it's hard not to admire Pickett, who was known to bring an unruly steer to its knees by taking a bite out of the animal's upper lip.
Book Description
The true sweat-and-dirt tale of the feisty cowboy-child who became the most famous black rodeo performer who ever lived. Includes a note about the history of the black West and a bibliography.

A Good Text for Sociological Analysis of Education.......2006-05-26
This book is very effective in helping the reader to grasp a wide range of interpretive theoretical perspectives on education today. The text covers both the policy side of the question (control and finance, bureaucracies, school reform, and teaching as a contested profession) and the anthropological side (youth culture, oppositional culture, engagement and alienation). The text also covers curriculum theory and theories of knowledge.
This book is particularly strong in contrasting and comparing social transmission and social transformation interpretive theories, particularly: functionalist theory, conflict theory, critical theory, and interactionism. There is a useful glossary of sociological terms in the back of the book, as well as 30 pages of excellent references for those who want to delve more deeply into the concepts raised.
Chapters include: Theory and its influences on the purposes of schooling; The social organization of schooling; Youth culture and the student peer group; The labor force in education: teachers, counselors, administrators, and ancillary staff; Social class and its relationship to education, What is taught in schools: curriculum and the stratification of knowledge; Ethnic minorities: equality of educational opportunity; and gender equity in schooling.
Each chapter is divided into logical and coherent subheadings and includes a useful summary of chapter contents. There are also suggestions for things to think about or activities to assign to help students grasp the concepts covered in the text more clearly.
The text works well for foundations of education, sociology of education, education and public policy, and education and society courses.
Unfortunately, like most textbooks today, this one is overpriced at about $75.
Critical Theorist View of Schooling in America -- Blame the white, male, middle-class culture.......2005-10-02
In the authors' view, The Way Schools Work is that they insidiously promote and support the values of America's dominant culture--the white, male, middle class which actively works to keep minorities and women in their place. The first chapter is such a muddle that it is difficult for one to determine exactly what the authors are trying to say. With the help of classroom discussion, I was able to sort out the characteristics of the sociological theories presented. Since the rest of the book is based on understanding these theories, I have to give the book low marks for not making this chapter crystal clear. In general, the book eschews the notion that if you work hard in school, you can succeed in American society. If you believe that notion, the authors allege, then you have bought into the dead-wrong functionalist view of meritocracy. Most of the studies cited in this textbook are at least 20 - 30 years old, and I wonder why more recent data was not given to support their contentions. This textbook presented a most negative, depressing picture of American schooling and places the blame for the dismal state of our schools squarely on the oppressive society in which we live. I respectfully disagree, and think that it is a much more complex issue. I do agree, however, that our public schools are not meeting the needs of our students.
A Crucial Invitation to the Lexicon of Education.......2001-04-06
For anyone interested in the philosophy, theory, and/or practice of education, this book is a must. It is one of the few texts I have found that takes an unbiased approach to the practice of schooling. It is necessary to know the language of education before moving forward with readings of pedagogy; this text provides just such a vocabulary. Offering a full spectrum of views, practices, issues, and policies, this text is an essential introduction to the world of Education.
A Poor Attempt to Criticize Schools..........2000-07-11
This book is a poor attempt to criticize schools and those who work hard everyday to help prepare students for life. If you are a teacher, administrator, or school official, do not waste your hard earned time and money with this non-sense. It provides no appreciation to the dedication of those who care, no matter their race, ethnicity, or gender.
An excellent introductory guide to the sociology of educatio.......1999-11-03
I have found this book to be an essential part of my collection of books on the sociology of education. As a doctoral student in the social foundations of education, I have consistently drawn on the material in this book for both papers and lectures. The book's organization and index make it an easy to use resource guide, much like an encyclopedia of the sociology of education. The text gives a general overview of the issues surrounding the historical and contemporary context of the public school system in the United States. While the book is limited in the extent to which it can talk about topics such as theories of reproduction and resistance, it nevertheless provides a starting point for further research endeavors. Don't sell yourself short on this one, it is well worth the price you have to pay.

Premiere Elements 3 users.......2007-03-17
Premiere Elements 3 users, this book is for you too! Being new to video editing, I was wary of a book that was not version specific. No need to worry, this book works well with version 3. Whether you are a beginner or advanced this book has it all. The format makes this book superior to others. The inside front cover has 'Contents at a Glance' index that directs you to the section for a specific task eliminating wasted time searching or reading unneeded info.
Just pick a task and go straight to that section. Each section has a guide on what to read before you begin and other related topics, key terms, tips, and best of all step-by-step instructions with illustrations.
After reading the dry manual, it was wonderful to have an easy to read, concise, and informative book. This book takes the frustration out of video editing and puts in the fun. The authors also have online tutorials that make a good companion to the book at [...].
Easy to use.......2007-01-11
This book is very well organized and easy to understand. As a newby to Premiere it was very helpful. I still refer to this book often and I think it is one of the reasons I feel proficient in Premiere today. It's only shortcoming is limited info on how to use the audio effects in Premiere
Must Have Resource.......2007-01-09
The software Premiere Elements 2 by Adobe is loaded with features and enables the user to create high-quality videos. Even for experienced Adobe users, help is needed for understanding all of PE2's amazing tools. This publication, PE2 in a Snap, gets an A for doing a wonderful job with precise and concise instructions and examples. It is not a manual that must be read from start to finish, but rather one where the user can jump in anywhere.
This is the book I've been looking for!!!.......2006-08-27
I've been using Premiere Elements for about a month. Until yesterday I've been slogging through the user manual and the help screens. I struggled to do the very basics--creatung slide shows, capturing video and gluing clips together, saving the output to DVD. Nothing fancy at all.
After spending some time on Adobe's Premiere Elements user forums, I kept seeing mention of this book, so I decided to order it. I can't believe how many cobwebs this book has swept away for me! It's organized well, with an extensive index, helpful contents at a glance, and plenty of screen shots. It contains beginner-level instructions, but also contains enough advanced level ideas and techniques that my head is spinning with new possibilities. I can't wait to modify the amateurish home movies I made before owning the book.
My heartfelt thanks to the authors for letting me USE Premiere Elements rather than fighting with it!!!
Practical applications of a powerful program.......2006-08-25
I don't care what anyone says -- sometimes reading the manual is just too painful. Not that Adobe's manual is bad, it's just... dry, and doesn't really show you practical applications of the program's features. . The "Premiere Elements 2 In A Snap" book makes learning Premiere Elements' ins and outs fun, and does it in a way that you don't have to weed through endless paragraphs to figure out what needs to be done.
Want to do a "Chroma Key" effect? Just turn to that page and follow the instructions.
This book really makes what is not an intuitive program understandable and not so formidable. Halfway through the book you find yourself saying, "Hey, I really CAN get the hang of this program!"
Kudos to the authors for creating what is now my basic "how-to handbook" for this powerful, complex program.
