    Book Description

1928. The son of multimillionaire George Hearst, William Randolph Hearst was a prankster. He was dismissed from Harvard because of his love of pranks. At the age of 24, he asked his father if he could take over running the San Francisco Examiner newspaper and there began his phenomenal career in the publishing business. Eight years later, he acquired the New York Morning Journal and the following year started the Evening Journal. Hearst boosted circulation by adding such features to his papers as color comics, sensational reporting and other such ideas. Later in life, he built a national newspaper syndicate and purchased several well-known magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and Harper's Bazaar.

3 out of 5 stars A wholesome account of two of NBA's early heros.......1997-12-29

Mr. Marshall gives us a wholesome look at the lives of NBA basketball players and twin brothers Dick and Tom Van Arsdale. Reading the book caused me to fondly recall the early days of the NBA when the salaries were not as high and the shooting was a lot hotter. I especially enjoyed the way Mr. Marshall used interviews with some of the games earliest and greatest stars (i.e. Bill Bradley, Billy Cunningham, Jerry West, and so on) to point out that these great players always understood that there is another life after their careers are over.

      Book Description

Stephen Spignesi, the world's leading expert on Stephen King (Enertainment Weekly) ranks 101 greatest creations of the man he calls "our greatest living author."

Working from a body of King's work numbering more than 550 individual creations, Spignesi lists all of King's writings in every genre and then determines the top 101. Each chosen work is synopsized and reviewed.

The Essential Stephen King provides an unbiased, uncompromising review of King's work by an acknowledged King authority. As such, it is a must for all serious and casual Stephen King fans as well as all lovers of superb contemporary literature.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Utterly uncritical, and duller than dishwater..........2005-05-24

The problem with the book is that it's utterly uncritical of the entirety of Stephen King's work - it's simply a basic recounting of the novel's plot, followed up with a few bits of trivia and the author's "What I Liked" section.

The problem is that the author of this book likes everything about Stephen King, even when he's talking about King's weaker material. You could write the words "I love Stephen King and everything he's ever done!" on an index card, then post it next to the Amazon search results for Stephen King and you'd have this book in a nutshell.

Plus, he refers to the Gor novels as "wildly popular". Uh, no.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, entertaining, interesting.......2003-04-23

This book is good. It has a lot of interesting facts about the worlds greatest authors books. Things you might have missed when reading. It's worth the money.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-10-16

This book is a great resource. It has a vast amount of information on King's books that you won't find elsewhere in one collection. I found this little gem at a bookstore and spent about a half hour reading through it. I finally broke down and bought it on Amazon and I'm really glad I did.
I'm already a Stephen King fan and have read many of his books. But it was great to read synopsis's on his other works that I havn't gotten to yet. The author made a break-down of each book, gave the character's names, and a movie adaptation of the book if applicable.
If you are already a Stephen King fan, you will no doubt enjoy this book. You can see which books made which spots on his '100 list' and perhaps argue, but I found myself agreeing with the author on most of his choices.
If you arn't a Stephen King fan yet, but are thinking about reading a book of his and are not sure which one to pick first, this is a great choice for you to read, so you get an idea of what your headed for. :)

      4 out of 5 stars 9.......2001-12-27

Spignesi is a great fan(atic) of King's and his enthusiasm shows in this listing of the top 101 King writings. He includes a wide variety of King's material from across his career. Anyone who is a fan will enjoy remembering the great stories already read and will be inspired to read ones Spignesi mentions that haven't yet been read.

Not all of Spignesi's opinions are correct, of course, but he is well-informed enough to make a strong case for each of his picks.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Ranking, Even Better Writing.......2001-09-03

Spignesi is probably the biggest King fan out there. He knows every book, novella, short story and essay the man has written in and out. There isn't one work he isn't totally familiar with. I actually wonder if he knows more about King's writing than King does himself.

In The Essential Stephen King, Spignesi tries to rank the 101 best things king has ever written. And although every major King work is featured (all of the novels are there, so are the novellas), many of King's best short stories didn't make the cut (where are The Night Flyer and Lawnmower Man?). And I was disappointed when I saw some of my favorite King novels ranked so high up the list (Dolores Claiborne, The Dark Half, Needful Things and Storm Of the Century aren't even near the top 10!). Of course, this is a fan ranking his favourite works. No two fans will think alike.

The reason the book is so powerful is because of the author's writing skills. Spignesi writes with passion and dedication. Every sentence is like a love confession for the King of horror. And I also enjoyed the articles written by King fans/experts at the end of the book. This books makes you want to revisit King's best writings. It's a book every King fan will enjoy and will use time and time again as a reference manual.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to all Wizard products.......2006-08-04

      L. Frank Baum's Wizard Of Oz has created 39 official sequels, over a hundred unofficial sequels, nearly 40 films, and much more: so any collector seeking a comprehensive guide to all Wizard products must have The Wizard Of Oz Catalog to keep track of all the formats and take-offs. All forty Oz books in the original series, related books, films, videos, comics, radio shows and more are cataloged in entries which cover performers, plots, and more. No price guides, but this is intended as a catalog of Oz products.

5 out of 5 stars All I Ever Wanted To Know...........2006-06-28

...about Oz in all its permutations. This compendium of Oz knowledge was not only educational in all of its entries but it was fun to read, too. Sherman imbues his catalog with critics reviews, editorial comments and asides that make the factual information come alive with the Hollywood of old and today's fascination with the movie, books, and memorabilia.

There are capsule synopses of all the original books along with movie, radio, stage, advertising, and computer game adaptations as well as actor/production credits. Pictures and illustrations give an insight into the characters and the graphics of the time.

Some of the interesting info covered in the book:
      1. Baum intended to break many of the unofficial "rules" for children's fairy tales
      2. David's Lynch's movie WILD AT HEART staring Nic Cage is a retelling of the Wizard of Oz story.
      3. Baum's widow decided to reject Disney's offer to purchase the rights to make an animated movie and instead sold the rights to an animator who failed to bring the story to the screen.

I bought this as a gift for a friend and wound up keeping it for myself.

The concept of "subculture" has long been of significant importance in research on youth, style, deviance and popular culture. Although in more recent years subculture has been the subject of sustained critique, it still provides a valuable point of reference for study and research. This text offers students an up-to-date and wide-ranging account of new developments in youth culture research that reject, refine or reinvent the concept of subculture. Bringing together key theoretical statements with illuminating analyses of particular aspects of youth culture - popular music, clubbing, body modification, the internet, etc. - this is an ideal introduction to a diverse and wide-ranging field.

3 out of 5 stars Okay guide when used with other materials.......2003-02-10

The guide has much useful information for newbies, but Mr. Chiu should leave the humor to someone else. He constantly tries to make jokes (perhaps the editor said "Keep it light") and he is not funny. This book is okay, especially if it's just one book in your aviation library, but there are other, better guides out there.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2000-03-19

Since the Help files on FS98 can be confusing and at times hard to access, This book is extremely useful. Hardly a session with FS98 goes by without me refering to this volumn. It is a great guide to anyone starting out with this program, or experienced users who want the occaisional reference. The only thing I was disappointed in was the fact that this book had very little info about about the technical aspects of the program. In particular I expected to see a chapter or two about downloading and loading add-ons from the internet (planes, scenary etc..). However, this is minor. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good guide to FS98.

4 out of 5 stars I think this is one of the best guides to MSFS98 around........1999-04-23

This book, which I refer to as my perfect Co-Pilot, really helped me in the early stages when I first got the game. It tought me about all the radio communications, (ie. VOR, MAV1, NAV2), and how to use all the proper flight instruments. Needless to say, I currently go onto the web every night and play with my online buds. This book is a MUST GET!! for all you veterens and newbies.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK ! ( especially if you hate the help files ).......1999-04-17

An excellent book for people who don't want to read the help files. All major topics have been covered, including Ground School, Flying Techniques, and Aerobactical moves. Also, don't forget - if you buy the book before April ends, you can get a $5 rebate on the book. Go to Microsot's website to print the coupon. CONSIDER THIS BOOK YOUR CO-PILOT !!

4 out of 5 stars I wish this book had come with the program........1998-11-09

Flight Simulator 98 came with a booklet with airport maps and that is all. As a newcomer, I wish this book had been in the box. I tried for several hours to land at the designated runway and always failed and so sought a manual. INSIDE MOVES is a good one. It first explains the program; its drop down menus, options, preference settings, etc. Next the language and conventions of flying, planes, and airports are covered. The instrument cluster is explained next, along with the variations for the different aircraft. I suppose the first areas might be considered ground school because the author takes you through these topics before he puts you in the cockpit on the runway; the next section. From normal flying procedures you are taken through emergency situations, flight planning, navigation, and finally some stunt flying.

I recommend this manual to Flight Simulator newbies like myself, experienced users might try Kiang's book. I give the book four stars. The book is well written and illustrated but the index could be improved. If you want to find the page describing how to use the localizer on the Boeing 737, you'll have to thumb through the pages some.

2 out of 5 stars Author completely misses Outlook's powerful heirarchical capabilities........2006-11-08

The result of using Outlook the way this author recommends is that you'll essentially have two separate lists: one list of all your projects and another list of all your "next actions". Since you'll be able to sort your next-action list according to the context in which each action will be done, this arrangement is better than nothing. But the problem with this arrangement is that with it, Outlook maintains neither project-to-next-actions connections nor next-actions-to-project connections. The author would have you list "next actions" within each project's Notes field to link the project to its next actions, and the author offers no link of each next action back to its project.

The author has missed a simple, powerful solution to this problem. When using Tasks in Outlook, the Tasks folder offers a heirarchical directory structure in which it's very easy to add folders and subfolders, just as one might do in Windows Explorer. Each of these folders that you create can be named to represent a project, and the next actions for each of these projects can be stored within the project's folder. Then all you have to do to see a list of all your next actions (across all projects) is to run a quick "Advanced Find" on your Outlook Tasks folder. Once you get the criteria of your search the way you want them, your search criteria can easily be saved, allowing you to recreate your "next actions" list with current data whenever you want it. If you include the "In Folder" field to display in your search results, then this field provides your next-action-to-project connection; and when you're reviewing your Outlook Tasks folder, the directory list of folders is essentially your project list, and within each project you see only the next actions associated with that project, so it's easy to maintain a project focus when planning your projects. Also, when using Outlook this way, many additional Outlook features can be used as well.

This book offers a few good ideas, but by failing to describe a simple and powerful way to have Outlook itself maintain the association of each project to its next actions, this book cannot be strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to start getting organized.......2006-09-11

This book gives you great ideas about how to get organiazed and get things going. The only thing is that you will really need to use and get along MS Outlook pretty well, else you'll miss some of the tips and tricks in the book.
Pretty good start-up place for those who need some pointers at how to classify and prioritize tasks, events, items, and almost everything.

5 out of 5 stars Take Back Your Life!.......2006-07-10

I'm not even to the end of the book and I already have my e-mail box emptied to zero, all my documents and files organized on my computer into an easy reference system so I know what information I already have. I am going to apply the same principles to my paper files this week. I had so much information stored and coming in that it is a huge relief to gain control over it all! All because I applied what I learned from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stong Emphasis on Up Front Planning.......2006-07-03

I am a veteran Franklin Covey planner user and consider myself very well organized and a strong time manager. Our company recently made the move to outlook, and I purchased this book hoping to get some tips on how to make the most of planning with outlook from someone who had a time management orientation. What I didn't expect was to learn anything more about time management. Boy was I wrong! Sally provides some real eye openers about spending more time up front planning tasks to get to "Strategic Next Actions" - tasks you can actually do without any dependencies. She also packs in excellent tips on setting up a reference system, handling email, and using the outlook task categories to their full potential.

I was able to achieve my basic objective with this book. My planning system was one where I used my Franklin Covey Plan Plus for Outlook software to create a daily task list each day with only items I could do that day, and used a collection of spreadsheets and word documents to track more complex "projects." Sally show how to integrate all of this into outlook with both planning and action tasks.

If you are looking for an indepth book on outlook however this isn't it. Instead its what it is advertised to be - a book on organizing first that tells who how to use outlook to implement the organizing system Sally has developed. The outlook information you need to implement the system is provided in a concise fashion and was very helpful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Outlook on Steroids.......2006-04-02

I discovered this book while searching for something to help me manage the relentless flood of email coming at me every day (I had 900 unread emails at the time). I thought if I could become an outlook power user, I might be able to manage that number down. This book helped me learn the ins and outs of outlook, but more importantly, taught me a compelling approach to managing my crazy, demanding, overcommited, multi-tasking life. Mind you, I was a Franklin Planner flunky and a Day-Timer drop out, which made me a motivated learner. I literally devoured this book - read it cover to cover in just a few days (with a highlighter). Along the way I configured Outlook the work way the author recommends. I discussed it with friends. I actually implemented my own "IMS", which I think is what sets this book apart from David Allen's "Getting Things Done". You could read GTD, but the content may just "wash over you" and not make a practical difference in the way you work. This is specific, hands on, step by step instruction that if you're serious, will change the way you work in Outlook for the better. Highly recommended . . .
