Book Description
In the mid-nineteenth century, Baltimore businessman William Thompson Walters began to patronize the artists of Maryland. Today, the museum that bears his name -- Baltimore's Walters Art Gallery -- excels in fields as diverse as Egyptian bronzes, Byzantine silver, illuminated manuscripts, medieval carved ivories, early Renaissance paintings, Sèvres porcelains, Islamic metalwork, and Chinese ceramics. Surprisingly, the story of how William Walters and his son Henry created one of the finest privately assembled museums in the United States has not been told.
With this new book, William Johnston, the Walters's curator of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century art, restores William and Henry Walters to their rightful place among America's great art collectors. Drawing upon the knowledge of the early museum staff and gathering valuable information from the few other available sources, Johnston has painstakingly recreated the life and world of the Walterses.
Though Henry Walters moved easily in Baltimore and New York social circles, Johnston explains, he kept much to himself and generally purchased art away from the public's eye. Despite the Walterses' reticence, they had a significant influence on the development of American tastes and museums -- William in his role as the first chairman of the Committee on Works of Art for the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., and Henry as the second vice-president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Their personal collection differs from those of other, more familiar collectors, such as J. P. Morgan and Henry Clay Frick, in that Henry Walters intended from the very first that the collection form a museum to serve the public. When the museum first opened its doors in 1934, Johnston relates, many visitors were surprised by the collection's size and by its comprehensive representation of the history of art from the third millennium b.c. to the early twentieth century.
Richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs and sixteen pages of full color, this book will fascinate anyone interested in Baltimore history, the history of museums and art collecting in America, and the art and culture of nineteenth-century America.

Book Description
Since the day she became the principal owner of the Cincinnati Reds, Marge Schott has been a woman surrounded by controversy. Allegations of her racist and anti-Semitic remarks made front-page headlines across the country. Mike Bass, the winner of the Associated Press Sports Editors Award for his series of articles on racism in sports, looks at the woman behind the Reds.
Customer Reviews:
Still timely, still relevant.......2006-05-15
With the Reds' recent ownership change earlier in 2006, I began to wonder more about the Reds' past ownership changes. From the first businessmen who decided to pay professional ballplayers to the legendary reign of Powel Crosley, the subject continued to interest. However, it's impossible to really examine the history of the subject without considering Marge Schott, who is perhaps the most infamous of all Reds owners. So I picked up this book.
Although the book was released 13 years ago, it remains relevant today. The book will no doubt entertain, educate and shock Reds fans just as it did during its initial release. For any Reds fan to truly understand the history of the team, this is one of those must-reads.
For years, I was under the impression that despite her rough edges, underneath Marge was a person who had her heart in the right place. "She just didn't know better," I, and many others, thought. "She's just a product of her times."
However, Bass does an incredible job of reporting so that readers can understand Marge on a deeper level. What you find is not someone simply ignorant and flawed, but rather, a person who seemingly enjoyed terrorizing her employees, thrusting her racist and bigoted beliefs on others, and generally making the lives of people around her miserable. You learn how she sabotaged her own friendships, businesses and the Reds out of spite -- and drunkenness.
Although the book sometimes felt dry and textbook-like, the facts uncovered make it worth a read. Pick up a cheap used copy from Amazon, and learn why the excuse "That's just Marge" should never, ever be used in her defense again.
The plain truth of the matter.......2001-07-20
Mike Bass presents a finely written detailed account of this woman, that is shocking to read. Each carefully reported incident and anecdote informs the reader to an astounding degree. The reporter Mike has researched his material thoroughly, presenting words and stories directly from the mouths of the people who witnessed the truth of how this woman acted in her role as a team owner, a role we usually expect played by people with morals, a sense of justice, and manners. Though filled with many people, and following several years, the book is easy to read, and interesting to follow. Mike Bass has done an exceptional job recounting the tale of Marge. The information is presented without bias, but the reader's opinion will easily be formed by the truth of the matter. It takes a high degree of skill to report such incidents accurately, and quote so many individuals and their perspectives. The story is chock full of recollections and honest feelings that are clearly displayed by the recollections. Only certain kinds of writers can gain the confidence of those who hold the truths and are willing to share it. Mike Bass is one of those rare breeds. The book is an eye-opener. Books that tell the truth of how things really are, can truly allow us to judge for ourselves. I highly recommend this book .

Book Description
In this remarkable new study, the renowned historian and theorist of early cinema turns his attention to the work of Fritz Lang, proposing new readings of the entire output of one of cinema's foremost directors. Gunning examines the films not only as a stylistically coherent body of work, but as an attempt to portray the modern world through cinema. The world of modernity in which systems replace individuals is conveyed by Lange's mastery of cinematic set design, composition, and editing. Lang presents not only a decades-long vision of cinematic narrative that can be compared to that of Alfred Hitchcock or Jean Renoir, but a view of modernity that relates strongly to the ideas of Adorno, Brecht, Benjamin, and Kracauer.
From the sweeping allegorical films of the '20s to the chilly and abstract thrillers of the '50s, Fritz Lang's films, Gunning claims, are among the most precious records of the twentieth century. The Films of Fritz Lang immeasurably enriches our understanding of a great artist who fades away even in being recognized and interpreted, an enigmatic figure at the junction of aesthetics, history, biography and theory.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on Lang.......2006-09-25
Occasionally quirky and idiosyncratic, this rich and thought-provoking book uses wide variety of sources and methodologies to analyse the work of one of the true geniuses of cinema.
Recomended to all students of cinema.

Book Description
It is an institution that seems almost hopelessly out of date, a social relic of bygone times. The very word debutante evokes images of prim, poised beauty, expensive gowns, and sumptuous balls, all of which seem anachronistic in these post-women's liberation times. But as Karal Ann Marling reveals, debdom in America is alive and well and ever evolving.
For thousands of young women every year, the society debut remains a vital rite of passage, a demonstration of female power; debs continue to be viewed as the finest flowers of a distinctive American culture. The debut and its offshoots--the high school prom, the sorority presentation, assorted beauty pageants--continue to emphasize celebrity, class, and community. But why does this peculiar tradition persist? Marling has the answer, as she demystifies debdom and the long-term American hankering after the trappings of royalty.
Debutante presents a penetrating and entertaining look at American debdom from the colonial era to the present day. Debbing has always been a performance art, created by and for women. In its heyday in the nineteenth century, debut signified the formal presentation to elite society of a young woman of substance who was eligible for marriage. During the twentieth century, it evolved from the glamour girl galas of the Great Depression to the charity bashes of the 1980s after the Deb Drought of the '60s and '70s. Marling reviews this colorful history, documenting changes in debdom right up to our own day, when the sisterhood of debs includes African Americans, Latinas, and members of other ethnic groups once carefully excluded: now even economically disadvantaged young women have their coming-out, where the emphasis of the event is on community.
In these pages, aspiring debs and curious readers alike will be taken from teas and cotillions to café society and discover the rich material culture of debdom, with its flowers and favors, gowns and pearls. They'll also meet famous debs of the '30s like Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton and glamour girl Brenda Duff Frasier; experience black American high society at the debut of Nat King Cole's daughter Cookie; and attend such civic spectacles as Kansas City's Jewel Ball and St. Louis's Veiled Prophet Ball.
In sparkling prose graced by a gallery of captivating photos, Marling provides an illuminating inside look at debs and a world that continues to celebrate the spirit and diversity of American womanhood.
This book is part of the CultureAmerica series.
Customer Reviews:
Silly, repetitive book.......2004-10-17
The book shows us the history of American debdom from the colonial era to the present day. I thought it was going to be more interesting than it was. The more I read, the sillier the whole concept of being a debutante seemed. I also felt like the author copied the style of the reporters who used to report on debutante balls. She would breathlessly describe fabrics for paragraphs, or tell us that so and so had shown up at this ball. It was sort of like reading a trashy magazine you can buy at the supermarket.
Okay, but it should have been longer.......2004-06-27
This book was a fun and quick read, but it wasn't really what I had expected. Since it is published by a University press, I assumed that the book would be a serious history of a rather fun subject. However, I was disapointed that there was no analysis whatsoever on anything that Marling discusses. Instead, it was basically a list of anecdotes, many of which we've heard before.
In addition, I felt that she glossed over some pretty key points: such as the fact that the more ostentatious debutant balls are still alive and well, instead of just having transformed into the democratic prom. There was, for example, no mention of Lauren Bush's debut at the Bal de Debutantes, the party and event circuit that goes on in places like the Hamptons every summer was not mentioned, nor was there any discussion of the "it's for charity" line that the wealthy now use as an excuse to party.
The book is certainly not terrible: it is a quick and simple and fun read. If you ever wanted to be a debutante, the book is definately worth reading. However, the book would have been much better if Marling had gone one way or the other: either made it a picture book filled with historical photos and anecdotes; or made it a serious history that offered some analysis.

To succeed with the Spanish Exchange, it’s more important to understand key ideas, plans, and typical pawn structures than to memorize long variations. A manual that explains both the theory and important themes that surround this opening.

Getting Hamstrung on Move Four.......2004-09-30
I think 1..e5 is an excellent reply to 1 e4. The Ruy Lopez offers the player of the black pieces a vast rich panoply of weapons to arm oneself with. White options in lieu of playing the Ruy Lopez, while many, do not, in my opinion, pose an insurmountable obstacle to overcome. In fact, many of these lines, such as the Kings Gambit or Two Knights Defense, tend to allow black good counterchances. However, a player of the black pieces must be aware that white has the option of causing structural damage to the black position right out of the opening, by an early piece exchange on c6. The Scotch and the Exchange Spanish are two that come to mind. Here we will review Kinsman's book covering the exchange variation of the Ruy Lopez. A new book by Kaufman maps out a white repetoire for the exchange variation, and uses the latest games. This book is older, and was published before ECO C 4th edition, which covers this material. Still, I think this book is a decent tool for players of either color who have use for information on this opening. Kinsman does a good job pointing out key games, and in many cases (more than in his book on the Modern Benoni) he throws in "tweaks" here and there where he thinks play could have been improved. I have been reading his book, along with a pile of others, in search of the best defense against the exchange. Black has many options. Yet, as I worked through them, I learned a few things about this opening. One, the structure damage black has to endure is very real. In essence, he is hamstrung. Black's "trumps" are his two bishops, but, in reality he is in a world of trouble here and if he thinks the bishops "grant" him equality he is mistaken. Black has to work hard to equalize. Two, while there is quite a bit of theory here, there is also much left unexplored. Some lines are quite unclear, others leave black still grasping for equality. A black player needs to be very suspicious of any "quick Fix". The line Kinsman suggests: ..5 Bd6 seems suspect. So what to play? I found the main line: 5..f6 6 d4 Bg4 to have a couple of unresolved points. Although, it must be said, the line has a long pedigree. Still, I do not like like playing on instinct when there are lines with more of the problems worked out to chose from. A popular line is 5..Qd6. Kinsman urges caution about employing this move, because black neglects his kingside development and risks falling under an early attack before he can deploy his forces. I recall the game Meeking-Korchnoi 1974 where Korchnoi fell under just such an attack. The 5..Qd6 lines left me with the feeling that there was much the books were not telling me. The fact that strong grandmasters play it, yet the theory seems unclear, hints that there is quite a bit of work that has been done on the black side of the exchange spanish that has not yet seen the light of day. That is my strong feeling. I think most grandmasters sense this, and thus the exchange spanish is not really relied on as a winning weapon for white among the strong GMs. Of course there are some who made special study of the white side, such as Rozentalis, and used their skill to score points, my feeling is that the exchange Spanish is not greatly feared by the high GMs. Those super-GMs who used the Marshall attack, like Adams, or the main lines, like Anand or Shirov, have been at the forefront of theory for the black side. Timman also played it with both colors (in fine style). For the club player like me, I think I would do just fine against a fellow club player who only knew bits of the theory. But if I faced an expert? Well, after much study, I feel the line that holds up best under scrutiny is the line that Kinsman dislikes: 5..f6 6 d4 exd4 7 Nxd4 c5 8 N moves then QxQ. This line removes the queens, making the fight a pure battle with black having the two bishops. Still, white has strong attacking chances in this line. Just look at Fischer-Spassky 1992(a grusome loss for Spassky). If white is lazy, slow, or inaccurate in his attack, then black should be fine (if black can develop his pieces before being overrun, then he should be able to blockade the white advance. By advance, I am referring to the advance of the white kingside majority, an everpresent slithering death creeping towards black. Stopping this advance requires the full attention of the the black player. With skill, he can force an piece exchange breaking up the white pawns, or undoubling his own. Failing this he must create a blockade with his pieces in active positions to prevent an effective advance by white. White has several tactical thrusts to strike before black is ready, with Nc3, e4-e5, N to e4, Be3, pawn to a4 and a5. There are a number of variations black needs to learn, several of them quite sharp, with himself under fierce attack. I feel these attacks have been analyzed in enough depth (some to 30 moves) to justify my belief that black can hold (I did not say win). If white mishandles (or as Kinsman says "goes off the rails in a big way.") his deployment, then I think black gains an early equality which should give him fair winning chances. Some of these white attacking attempts are also not ideal ones and can rebound with black getting the better position. In no other line of the exchange do I feel as confident for black, although I suspect others feel 5..Qd6 might offer better winning chances (black castles queenside in these lines, with the queens on). My final opinion is that, with best play, the Exchange Spanish is a line with strong drawish tendencies. Thus I argue black is indeed hamstrung right out of the gate in this line. Yet, for the black player, as I said, 1..e5 is very rich. Even the line I recommend for black against the exchange demands a high level of knowledge and skill to play. Study and practice of it can only help ones chess. If nothing else it will teach you a healthy regard for the power of pawn majorities. And note for white players, there is a high degree of knowledge and sophistication neccessary to succeed with the exchange against skilled opposition. The 5..Bg4 line, for example, can lead to a swift defeat for white if he does not know what to do (the fact that Topalov has played this way should be a warning). So, get the book, study it, and look for follow up work on the line. Once you really start to know what you are doing with 1..e5, you will come to realize just how good a choice you made, and you will not abandon it. Good luck, and let the two bishops roar!
Semi Complete works of the Ruy Lopez exchange.......1999-10-30
I enjoy the author's commentary. He blends humor with raw analysis. This book shows all the important variations for any serious student of the opening. The diagrams are good and the book is almost complete, however the "Odds and Ends" chapter could be expanded -i.e. There are a lot more options than the ones given.

MCSE S/P KIT WINDOWS SVR 2003 CORE REQUIREMENTS
Amazon.com
In the certification craze of 1999-2001, tens of thousands of people earned their Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) ratings. Those certifications are expiring now, just as Microsoft is coming out with Windows Server 2003 to replace the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. There may be a real opportunity for those who earn the Windows Server 2003 certification--and that's where MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements comes in. This four-book set (which comes with quiz software and a 180-day laboratory version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, plus a coupon for 15 percent off the cost of each of the four exams), combined with some hands-on practical work, should be all you need to earn the new MCSE rating or the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) certification.
Each of the four books (each with a separate author) covers the published requirements of a single exam. Coverage tends to be text-heavy--even procedures rely mostly on text and use few screen shots. This goes to reinforce the fact that these are serious books for people with a pretty good idea of what they're doing already. Chapters typically begin with conceptual coverage of their subjects (using diagrams to illustrate the relationships among network entities in many cases) and move on to illustrative procedures to try. Chapters then conclude with carefully considered discussion questions. The answers to the questions appear in an appendix, complete with explanations of why the correct answers are what they are. --David Wall
Topics covered: The published exam requirements for the MCSE/MCSA core exams: "Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Environment" (70-290), "Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure" (70-294), "Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-291), and "Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-293).

Seriously, though, these books look a lot like the ones I used to study for my first MCSE, on NT4. Full of most of what you need to pass the exam, plus a lot of junk you don't. I think they're an attempt to trick/force you into learning enough to be more than a paper MCSE while soaking up enough info to pass the test.
The "knowledge" contained herein is no substitute for real world experience, but is daunting to tackle even for a seasoned professional. If you really know computers, and just want test info, I'd recommend something like the Transcender exams instead.
Redundancy at it's best.. If you have 70-291 and 70-298, you have just about the whole 70-293.......2007-04-28
I have just gone through the 70-291 and 70-298 books, and went through this one ..... and was gravely dissapointed.. I felt like I was reading the same material as I just finished.. So with that said, I believe if you are going for tests, and you already own 70-291 and 70-298 there is no reason to go out and get the MSPress of 70-293 since the material would have already been covered...

I got a copy of the MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements, Exams 70-290, 70-291, 70-293, 70-294.I was very upset when I noticed that one of the books had a huge tear on the back cover. When you pay $200.00 for brand new books, in a sealed state they should be new when you take them out of the box , not dirty and beat up. Get it together Amazon.

Ok, but needs a lot of work to be a real test prep guide........2006-12-12
One would think that a Microsoft Press book would be better edited; more technically detailed and have more thogrough explanations. But one would be wrong if they thought so. Microsoft, it seems to this reader, slapped together this study guide to make a couple of extra bucks or to just keep the writers busy. The level of user experience listed in the guides as a prerequisite for taking the MCSE exams is greater than the level that the books are geared for. If one has the prerequisite level of experience recommended in the guides then these books will be well below your experience level. However if you are very new to Active Directory and server environments this study guide will give you a fair introduction.
I will say this about Planning and Maintaining Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure by Craig Zacker, Mr. Zacker does not have any MS certifications which does not induce a lot of confidence of the author, and omits lots of really important technical information that is very relevant to planning a network, especially his descriptions of TCP/IP planning and sub netting. I noticed several typos and even some incorrect lab answers in each of the books.
All of the labs and diagnostic procedures are done the Microsoft way, which occasionally is not the way that things are done in the real world.
Trancender tests are ok, but Testking prep tests are way better.
