Book Description
"Fight for the folks at the bottom. Make a better Product. Introduce new products and always Listen to the wisdom of people who make things."
A tough childhood in a Western Pennsylvania coal town and a career that included both union and management experience gave Pittsburgh's Harold J. Ruttenberg his unique and humanistic perspective on the requirements for the enduring success of American industry. Time and again, Mr. Ruttenberg brought his unfailing ideas to ailing metal companies and he consistently led business after business to unprecedented success.
In his meticulously researched memoir, My Life in Steel, Mr. Ruttenberg distills a lifetime of work in the labor movement, brushing shoulders with the likes of Phillip Murray and John L. Lewis. He chronicles his move from unionist to industrialist in Pittsburgh's burgeoning steel industry. And he outlines the implementation of his ideas and ideals within the companies he managed.
In his youth, Ruttenberg learned about fighting by taking a correspondence course from legendary heavyweight Jim Corbett in a desperate attempt to battle anti-semitic school yard bullies. And from those same coal miners' sons, he first became aware that the very best production ideas were spawned by the workers themselves. Through his sixty-two year career, spanning the New Deal through the Clinton administration, he developed a vision for workers, labor organizations and management. His fundamentals were simple and few. Ruttenberg believed in improving production by listening to what the workers who actually made things had to say. Second, he believed it was imperative to provide the best possible work environment for production workers. And his third belief was that a company should always strive to make a better product than the competition, and a lasting product line that offers something new every year.
My Life in Steel is more than a history; it is a guide for the future of American business. It tells how labor and management can come together and why it must happen.

Age Old Wisdom........2007-07-05
At the first start of reading the book, it left me pondering on a couple of questions. The first one which pertained to the Great Depression Era - and why the author made little mention of it, but as I was pulled more into the book I realized later why he choose to speak little of it. This book was not designed for the reader to bask in the doom and gloom of that time, although a brief depiction of it would have been welcomed from this intellectual's perspective.
Second, Ruttenberg mentioned the family business was good in 1928. He also stated the store's turnover was over a million dollars, but he did not mention how that was done. Especially during the Great Depression. In my judgment, this void left a big question mark in my mind and maybe in the mind of others to wonder as well.
I believe Ruttenberg wrote this book in a tone that of a concerned father, mentor, and friend engaging in an intimate chat with you to give you good advice on how to attain success in business. Putting all the struggles he experienced behind him he focuses the reader on the road he paved for all to partake. What he has passed down is priceless.
This book illustrates never-ending depictions of the power struggles found in the early Union era.
"Due to the management clause found in the collective bargaining contracts in basic steel which gave management freedom to determine unilaterally all policies and decisions outside the realm of their contracts with the USWA. By this clause and their subsequent behavior, the major steel CEO's and managers consistently refused any union-management cooperation programs".
This dilemma between union-management is the reason why Phillip Murray stayed with the ultimate union objective of selling the labor of its members for a price in cash and benefits. He realized the clash of class.
Throughout the book you will find chock full of wisdoms buried within it. Valuable business lessons from an old pro. Harold Ruttenberg was a great leader and unifier of men and women. There are great leadership principles to be found in the book that is still applicable today.
Ruttenberg in this book substituted the pessimism of the Great Depression by presenting optimistic solutions by stating that:
"Steel runs to the heart of America's basic industries. Put it on an annual-wage basis and the fluctuations in industrial production will vanish. America will be on the road to abolishing mass, chronic unemployment".
Bursting with energy, Harold Ruttenberg was the one-time leading authority in Union-Labor Relations management. He also was a loving husband and father. He worked and lived his life to his fullest capacity.
If you want to become an expert unionist, then follow Harold Ruttenberg's life work. You cannot go wrong. He has already laid the groundwork. All is left to do is follow his tracks to the direction you want to take your career in Union - Labor Relations management.
You will find what emerges from this book is an inspiring tale and vivid portrait of a remarkable man's many achievements and success against overwhelming odds.

A tough, street wise novel packed with an important message for young readers.... --Andrew Young, former Mayor, Atlanta, Georgia
Customer Reviews:
Let's hear more..........2007-08-11
I really enjoyed this book, the characters were very believable and the story unfolded in a way that left me wanting to know what happened to many of the people after the book ended.
I really enjoyed the photos too, Portugal is apparently a beautiful country.
I hope another book by these authors is available soon.
When Least Expected .......2006-01-09
This book is about women who learn to choose for themselves. In their learning the reader accompanies them from comfortable sameness to examination, Portugal and realization. It is a pleasant, reflective journey full in interesting people and places.
Two forty something sisters from the United States are lured into a transatlantic quest to find refuge for the ashes of a beloved aunt and in so doing discover and resolve a century old family mystery and the intricacies of blood lines it created. `Father" Helen and Tyner, the two sisters, combine humor, sibling rivalry, family history and personal secret keeping into a months long steady unraveling of lives and their re assembly. The reader gets to know and adore Helena and her sister, but the real "star" of the book is the dry moist, warmish cool bright shadowy air of Portugal itself. We walk winding streets, dodge dogs, perspire, and enjoy a relaxing tea among ancient buildings, reassuring grave yards and lovely suspicious and generous people. The life of the village is filled with bird song, gardens slightly weedy, brick roads and arched bridges.
Of course, Ty and Helen find their Portuguese family and of course they are as delightful and interesting as the sisters themselves. Of course, life decisions are explored: "What form is love to take? How do intellectual stimulation, creative juices, intimacy fit into a life of work, laundry, bill paying and raising children?" The authors of the book do not resolve this balancing act for all of us- more is the pity. The resolution is just for the sisters and their friends, husband, child and lover. The resolution is both tidy (handy that) and believable.
Most anyone who liked the Mitford Series will enjoy this book. It embraces the struggle of all of us who have solve life's urgencies for food, shelter and adolescence and sorts out through the perspective of the sisters at least one answer to the human need to create, to love, to laugh at ourselves and avoid large dogs. I enjoyed it and recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Where did this guy come from?.......2003-01-24
Not exactly written by a savy Flash5 user.
Definitely a good Flash title to have..........2002-11-26
This is a nicely written book covering a variety of areas, and its really nice to see a chapter about actual graphic design in a Flash book too. Its really well-done as a step-by-step book for users who have an understanding of Flash that are wanting to jump to the next level and use Flash for more than just your basic point-and-click movie. Nice job guys!
Great piece of work!.......2001-11-30
"Instant Macromedia Flash 5" is written for webdesigners/programmers who
already know the basics of Flash (drawing, actionscripting...) and want
to start over to advanced topics.
The book is divided into several "real world" examples such as building
an MP3 player or constructing a game in Flash so the reader can
jump into the chapter he likes best or which fits his needs most.
The chapters themselves are built up as step by step instructions which
are written very clear and have screenshots where necesarry. Even if you
cannot get your own work running during the reading and working through
a chapter you can still have a look at the flash project files provided
on the CD to see what you did wrong.
Although it is possible to jump through the chapters nonlinear chapter 1,
"Designing in Flash" should definitely be a must for all readers because
it helps avoiding mistakes in design others already did an learned from.
The book has a really useful index that helps you locate the information
you need in your work.
All in all this is a great lecture for everyone who wants to learn how
to create advanced flash movie content and already knows the basics.
The only thing that could be improved is the paper of the cover that tends
to split into cardboard and coating when used in the daily work.
Just what i Needed.......2001-11-29
This book is for people like me that need to know exactly how things are done , step by step and line by line. There is a huge cross-section of things covered in this book, and every bit of it is described fully and presented in a way that you can put right into use.
All flash books should be like this, it is a keeper, & a great gift for that talented web person you know who could benefit from the kick-start this book gives.
Great Information.......2001-11-07
I really liked the information on design. As a technical person that information was worth all the money of the book. Then there is the other chapters of the book. In found it to be very constructive and usable information! Very easy to follow and a great book! I think a must buy for any Flash user, whatever level.
Book Description
Why do Internet, financial service, and beer commercials dominate Super Bowl advertising? How do political ceremonies establish authority? Why does repetition characterize anthems and ritual speech? Why were circular forms favored for public festivals during the French Revolution? This book answers these questions using a single concept: common knowledge.
Game theory shows that in order to coordinate its actions, a group of people must form "common knowledge." Each person wants to participate only if others also participate. Members must have knowledge of each other, knowledge of that knowledge, knowledge of the knowledge of that knowledge, and so on. Michael Chwe applies this insight, with striking erudition, to analyze a range of rituals across history and cultures. He shows that public ceremonies are powerful not simply because they transmit meaning from a central source to each audience member but because they let audience members know what other members know. For instance, people watching the Super Bowl know that many others are seeing precisely what they see and that those people know in turn that many others are also watching. This creates common knowledge, and advertisers selling products that depend on consensus are willing to pay large sums to gain access to it. Remarkably, a great variety of rituals and ceremonies, such as formal inaugurations, work in much the same way.
By using a rational-choice argument to explain diverse cultural practices, Chwe argues for a close reciprocal relationship between the perspectives of rationality and culture. He illustrates how game theory can be applied to an unexpectedly broad spectrum of problems, while showing in an admirably clear way what game theory might hold for scholars in the social sciences and humanities who are not yet acquainted with it.
Customer Reviews:
fascinating but a little disappointing.......2005-05-09
All of Mike Chwe's papers are on line--including all those included in this book. That's really the only reason that this gets four, rather than five stars.
The book (and Chwe's work in general) breaks fascinating ground where economics, with its hyperrationalistic bias, has often refused to tread: the realm of culture, customs, and norms. He argues, convincingly, that these seemingly irrational behaviors often have very rational foundations, specifically due to problems posed by scarce information and inferrence. This isn't necessarily shocking to various subtopics in economics--Condorcet Jury Theorem comes to mind as a classic example, as are recent advances in behavioral finance--but Chwe's approach takes it to far more commonplace varieties of social interactions than, for example, the economics of financial market bubbles and manias.
A new way of thinking.......2003-06-04
This book has the potential to open the minds of economists to the relationship between culture and economic action, and anthropologists-sociologists and political scientists to the power of game theory. It lays the path towards a new, more intergrated social science, which helps reconcile the collectivist notions of Durkheim with the individualists notions of neo-classical economics, and does this much more effectively - within its realm - than social capitalists like James Coleman and Robert Puttnam. Chwe's ideas are much deeper than theirs - and more better expressed -- he writes very well. Since "Rational Ritual" is more deep than flashy, its real impact will be felt in time.
A theoretical book with popular appeal........2001-05-24
I find this book to be simply compelling. Easy to read and approachable, yet the logic and theories behind the premise are rock solid. What boggles the mind is how incredibly pervasive the concepts are in today's information society. I can see that this book will soon be required reading for advertisement executives, psychologists, sociologists, business school students. This is a powerful look at ourselves and what drives our behavior on a daily basis. Outstanding.

Excellent Reference Material.......2007-09-01
This book explains the basics (and some more advanced concepts) of good graphic design without overwhelming the reader with technical terms nor "dumbing down" the vocabulary for the novice. There are plenty of colourful examples and the book follows its own advice! This book lacks, however, the specific steps to accomplish the different design goals, but this is probably due the many publishing packages available. It assumes the reader will figure that out for himself (or herself.) The book is a compact 200 page document that is filled with useful information from cover to cover and is a great addition to any designer's reference library.
Another successful design book from Before & After.......2007-06-13
Yet another great book from the folks at Before & After. I have the Before & After Page Design book and subscribe to the PDF magazine. Even with all that, I still liked the addition of this book. It covers the usual business situations like newsletters, stationery, logos, forms and charts. The ideas illustrated and dissected here were found to be light bulb creating. I was able to apply a few of the tips right away to some projects I was working on at the time.
Some of the nuggets I enjoyed most were the comparison and discussion of what typefaces are best for what text that can be applied to all sorts of type, logo creation and thought process and the charts. The charts were not just your average pie charts, but great design elements.
Again, I'm impressed by another Before & After project. The illustrations and explanations help new and intermediate designers improve the craft. I'm sure seasoned professionals can pick up a few tips too.
Excellent.......2007-03-09
This is a concise, easy to read book that seems to cover a large variety of publications and projects. I can open it up to any page and get new ideas and insights on projects I'm working on.
Great book for effective work.......2005-11-21
I am a former graphic worker and I now teach this matter to students who have no ideas of the state of the art.
The book is professionnal and easy to use, and all examples are so helpfull to any people who need advices in business graphics.
A great resource for ANY business.......2005-11-09
Before & After is one of my favorite design magazines. The project examples, step-by-step guidelines and practical articles have always been excellent resources for designers of all education and experiences levels. With Graphics for Business, author, designer and teacher John McWade teaches the reader how to make their business look great. The book is not logo or corporate identity specific. In addition to logo design, McWade covers the creation of newsletters, stationery, sales pieces and forms, and charts, reports, calendars and maps. Still, the logo and identity section of the book (44 pages of the volume) explains logos very well and provides great examples of how to design lettermarks, wordmarks, monograms, ligatures and other forms of identities. Playing with type, words, shapes and illustrative elements are all presented in fun and well-illustrated manner. The book will be a great addition to the design library of anyone interested in producing a strong image for their business, or that of a client. - Jeff Fisher, writer of bLog-oMotives and the "Logo Notions" column at CreativeLatitude.com
