    Book Description

In 1997 the American people will celebrate with great fanfare and publicity the fiftieth anniversary of Jackie Robinson's explosive entrance into major league baseball. Robinson has become a national icon, his name a virtual synonym for pathbreaker. Indeed, much has transpired between this young African-American's first bold strides around the baseball diamonds of a segregated America and General Manager Bob Watson's pride in assembling 1996 World Champion New York Yankees. Recognizing this monumental event in America's continuing struggle for integration, Jules Tygiel has expanded his highly acclaimed Baseball's Great Experiment. In a new afterword, he addresses the mythology surrounding Robinson's achievements, his overall effect on baseball and other sports, and the enduring legacy Robinson has left for African Americans and American society. In this gripping account of one of the most important steps in the history of American desegregation, Tygiel tells the story of Jackie Robinson's crossing of baseball's color line. Examining the social and historical context of Robinson's introduction into white organized baseball, both on and off the field, Tygiel also tells the often neglected stories of other African-American players--such as Satchel Paige, Roy Campanella, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron--who helped transform our national pastime into an integrated game. Drawing on dozens of interviews with players and front office executives, contemporary newspaper accounts, and personal papers, Tygiel provides the most telling and insightful account of Jackie Robinson's influence on American baseball and society.

    5 out of 5 stars Real Eye-Opener.......2007-04-11

THis is a wonderful book that I can't praise enough. If you - like me - have been putting off reading about Jackie Robinson and the other black baseball pioneers of the late 1940's and 1950's, this is the book for you. It's a shocking description of just what life was like for blacks at that time. It's a real eye-opener that needs to be read by all baseball fans and all students of American history.

    4 out of 5 stars Exceeds Expectations.......2001-12-12

I purchased this book to learn more about Jackie Robinson and his relationship with Branch Rickey. Jules Tygiel gave me that (in an unbiased, thorough manner with great historical perspective) and then some! I gained an increased appreciation for the role of the Negro Leagues in the development of Major League baseball. I gained insight into the changing perceptions of baseball management, players and fans toward African-Americans and their contributions to the game. I was momentarily transported to that time, not as long ago as I would have thought, where non-white players were treated as second-class citizens. It was really an eye-opener. In addition, Mr. Tygiel's style was so honest and even-handed that I can't wait to read his book, "Past Time: Baseball As History," which I ordered today!

    4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2001-09-01

This scholarly yet readable look at baseball integration from 1947-1959 goes well beyond the inspiring story of Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey. Author Jules Tygiel also informs about such secondary figures as Larry Doby, Bill Veeck, Hank Aaron, Pumpsie Green, etc. Tygiel shows that integration proceeded slowly and in the face of strong resistance - the Boston Red Sox didn't add a black player until 1959, three years after Jackie Robinson retired. We also see how baseball integration spurred civil rights, while hastening the end of the Negro Leagues. I'd have liked more coverage of baseball's declining attendance after 1949 (probably caused by television), and the suspected correlation between athletic dominance and underclass poverty. Still, BASEBALL'S GREAT EXPERIMENT is a well-researched look at an interesting period in sports history.

5 out of 5 stars A book that increased my understanding.......2000-07-27

I have a better understanding of integregation and how it affected every American no matter what his race or beliefs. Baseball was a pioneering vechicle for social questioning and challenged many men other than Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson into greatness. They were courageous men who had to fight convention and who lead other Americans to follow their example. I realize the impact integration had on everyone involved Black or White: the team owners, the players, broadcasters, vendors, and families. Many individuals sacrificed to improve their freedom and the freedom given to other humans. Mr. Rickey and Mr. Robinson are not portrayed as mythological figures but rather as real men I can respect more because they are like all of us. I am convinced that Mr. Robinson endured because he had strong character and determination and he believed in "the experiment." I feel I know him better now that I know more about his struggles and triumphs. I kept reading because everything was explained simply and with logic and with an absence of bias.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive book on Robinson and civil rights.......1999-11-16

Professor Tygiel's book is the definitive work on the importance of Jackie Robinson to American history. Tygiel writes a well-researched, dynamic narrative that illustrates Robinson's incredible achievements and strength of character. This book, unlike others on Robinson, focuses on the years before and after 1947 as well. By doing this, Tygiel reveals the impact of Robinson's achievement in the context of the emerging civil rights movement. Jackie Robinson's story was not his alone- it was the story of the ballplayers who came after him. The book also shows how Robinson's courageous seasons personified the changing American conscience regarding race in the post-war era.

This odd assortment of exploratory essays circles around Dracula's neighborhood by looking at the philosophy of blood, the wonders of the vampire bat, the cryptic life of Bram Stoker, Dracula's movie lineage, and seven other vampiric topics. Author Leonard Wolf conveys his enthusiasm for the Dracula myth and its many resonances without sounding like either a drooling fan-boy or a lifeless academic. Bringing in his personal experiences with English students in the late '60s (Wolf taught at San Francisco State University) Wolf is able to connect the Dracula myth to the meanings of modern lives in a way that is playful, free from presumption, readable, and rigorous.

                Book Description

In the 100 years since its publication, Bram Stoker's Dracula has never been out of print.  Once introduced to the world by the silent film classic Nosferatu in 1921, Dracula became an enduring icon of fear, forever immortalized as a frightful embodiment of evil and forbidden sexuality.

Now, in this fascinating and entertaining account, Wolf examines the various interpretations of the immortal vampire in print, film, television, theater, and literature, including an extensive outline of Bram Stoker's life and his literary masterpiece, Dracula.  Wolf explains how the story of a sexually sadistic undead creature/man who feeds on blood worked its way into mainstream society and how it is now used as a ubiquitous marketing tool for products from hair tonic to children's breakfast cereal.

                The sourcebook includes:

                * An exploration and the history of vampire myths, including the tale of Vlad the Impaler
                * An overview of vampire films from the silent classic Nosferatu to Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula
                * A discussion of vampire bats and the lore of blood
                * A complete bibliography, filmography with movie stills, telefilmography, and a theater chronology
                * Maps of Transylvania, London, and Whitby
                * A calendar to coincide with the "real time" actions of Bram Stoker's Dracula, complete with sunrise and sunset times as well as the all-important phases of the moon
                * And much more...

4 out of 5 stars Insightful Guidebook to a Century of Bram Stoker's "Dracula".......2005-04-24

Published for the centennial of Bram Stoker's masterpiece of gothic horror, "Dracula: The Connoisseur's Guide" is a guidebook of sorts to the Dracula Phenomenon that has continued for over a century since the novel's publication in 1897. At the time, "Dracula" didn't aspire to be anything more than a Victorian potboiler, but the novel found such far-reaching appeal that it has never gone out of print in over 100 years. Author Leonard Wolf also produced the excellent annotated edition of the novel "The Essential Dracula" and has long been one of "Dracula"'s most dedicated scholars.

Wolf introduces "A Connoisseur's Guide" by telling us how he came to be interested in the Dracula Matter, as he calls it, while teaching at San Francisco State University in the late 1960s. This bit of personal information may seem superfluous, but those readers who have followed Wolf's work on "Dracula" will find their curiosity finally satisfied. And the circumstances that led to Wolf's -and indeed anyone's- first book on the Dracula Matter, "A Dream of Dracula", published in 1972, reveal an interesting climate on American college campuses that led to academia's acceptance of "Dracula" as a work worthy of study.

"Dracula: A Connoisseur's Guide" then takes us through the "Dracula" phenomenon, from folklore to fiction to film. Wolf dedicates a chapter to each of these subjects: vampire folklore in various cultures, the symbolism and realities of blood, vampire bats, the 15th century Wallachian Prince Vlad Tepes from whom "Dracula" takes its name, gothic literature, literary precursors to "Dracula", the life of Bram Stoker, an analysis of the novel in four parts, 20th century vampire fiction, and vampire films from 1922 to 1992. Through these subjects, Wolf discusses "Dracula"'s descendants and the basis for its persistent appeal, as well as the novel itself.

"The Connoisseur's Guide" incorporates some elements of Leonard Wolf's out-of-print Dracula books. It is a more evolved and scholarly version of 1972's "A Dream of Dracula", although it lacks many of that book's personal meditations. "A Dream of Dracula" is quoted several times in "The Connoisseur's Guide", and most readers won't need a copy of the older book in addition to this one. A couple features of Wolf's first annotated edition, "The Annotated Dracula", published in 1975, have also made their way here: Wolf's 7-month calendar that plots the action of the novel is reprinted in the back of the book, and the wonderful drawings by Sätty introduce each chapter. These reproductions of Sätty's drawings really aren't big enough to be impressive, unfortunately -just big enough to remind us of how impressive they were in "The Annotated Dracula". But fans and students of Bram Stoker's novel will find "Dracula: A Connoisseur's Guide" and interesting and insightful exploration of their favorite gothic villain by an enthusiastic and erudite admirer.

                3 out of 5 stars Guide a Good Read.......2004-02-25

A well-written, well-researched, enjoyable outing from the author of the annotated Dracula. Anyone with a more-than-casual interest in Dracula will be well-rewarded with a read of this book. (And if your interest in Vampiredom's most famous son comes from the movies, don't hesitate to read Stoker's "Dracula" itself ... once you get past the possibly unfamiliar epistolary style, there's a real corker of a story there that too few lately have read!)

Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.

                5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection.......2002-09-20

It's curious to note, however, that the movie-spawned error of calling Dracula's key London residence "Carfax Abbey" and not "Carfax" extends even to Wolf's canny writing.

5 out of 5 stars TELLS A LOT ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DRACULA AND VAMPIRES.......1998-11-21

I have just recently bought this book (from Amazon) and have found it very interesting. Wolf explains vampire lore, the importance of blood, the vampire bat, and find out about the real Dracula, Vlad the Impaler. Dracula; The Connoisseur's Guide also includes the history of horror in ficton and the precursors of Bram Stoker in vampire ficton. A brief biography of Bram Stoker is in this book, followed by another chapter with a over 30-page "summary" of the original Dracula story. The next part Wolf discusses the vampires tales of 1898-to the present. Leonard then has another chapter in his book about all the Dracula films, from Nosferatu, to Bram Stoker's Dracula.

This book is a wonderful addition to all the books on Dracula and vampires.

In addition to all the great writing, there are loads of pictures, including stunning illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. Also there are maps, film stills, photographs, and drawings.

This is a great book for vampire and Dracula fans everywhere.

Hans Berliner is one of the most successful correspondence chess players of all time, and was utterly dominant in the 5th World Championship. Here, for the first time, he explains the set of principles - The System - that he used to guide him to the right moves. Readers will be astonished by the simplicity and power of Berliner's methods as he takes several major openings and subjects them to System principles, and finds radically new approaches to them.

5 out of 5 stars Some real truth in a chess book.......2002-12-04

This book is one of the most interesting I have read. It has many interesting points such as a revised points score scale for the pieces. Berliner clearly believes in this as he has used it for the evaluation function in his computer program HITECH.
Also some of the opening analysis is very interesting, such as some very convincing ideas on Benko gambit and Grunfeld.

The book is has been slated by some ignorant reviewers who do not fully understand what Berliner is trying to say in this book.
The idea in the book to me is that evaluation is the key to the middlegame and that you have to have an openings philosophy.

The anecdote about his conversation with Bobby Fischer is also an eye opener.

All in all very entertaining, more please Dr Berliner!

4 out of 5 stars Too good to be true.......2001-09-10

Like many of the other reviews to this book, I believe this book was amusing! It was very provocative to get me to think about changing from my Beloved English to the Queen's Pawn Opening. However, like many other people, I cringe when he claims to have worked out a forced win for White. Yes, his little records are exciting, and perhaps he is on to something, but I doubt that chess will be solved to a level where humans can know how to do it, ever.
Still, there is much to be said for his interesting first two chapters, where he lets you in on some good information, much of which was review (in the first chapter), but still informative. I did enjoy this book, but for someone really looking to improve their chess, I can not recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars eccentric and egocentric but worth reading, maybe.......2001-07-11

When you read - page 174 - "we wanted to claim that this is The theory of chess, not just my theory" you may think that the author is a joker or the innocent victim to german and american culture. OK, Berliner was an average chess player - US results were meaningless in years when soviet players dominated - and 30 years ago was a succesful correspondence chess player, then quitted active chess. he dedicates himself to computer science and designed and programmed Hitech a succesful chess playing software until late 1988. So now he writes this book pretending to reveal the chess truth. Here Berliner comments 13 games, most recent of which is 30 years old, when in the chess world 30 years are 300 years. He explains how to choose each move it's true, but this leads to variations and every chess lover knows variations are confuted all saints day by chess practice. Berliner thinks he is Prometeus but chess is an unrevealable fire. However the book contains some interesting idea so I'm happy having read it.

5 out of 5 stars The System - How to create more pressure playing d4.......2000-12-20

Although this book has had some poor reviews, it should not be under-estimated. If you are of playing strength 1600-1800 (which I currently am), and you like to play d4 as an opening, I would highly recommend this book. Although Berliner speaks of "The System" as if it could be written down as an equation (so to speak) i.e. the "unified field theory of chess," (this concept is interesting to analytical types and/or scientists)-> The book does has many merits for the d4 player against the Benko Gambit, Indian defenses, etc.. Check it out!

2 out of 5 stars An Absurd Book.......1999-07-11

For those of you tempted to buy a book whose author claims to have worked out a forced win for White against the Grunfeld and several other defenses, I strongly recommend that you read the independent reviews by John Watson and Jeremy Silman at chesscafe.com, where the specifics of much of Berliner's bad analysis and megalomaniacal pontificating are spelled out in detail. In my case, I found the book to be a slightly amusing exercise in debunking crackpot science (which is why I gave it two stars). I'm sure that there will be several others who will agree with me that this may just be the most preposterous chess book ever written. If, however, you're the sort of person who watches PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE every time it's on TV, calls the Psychic Friends Network regularly and thinks professional wrestling is for real, this book is right up your alley.

Well illustrated and carefully thought out guide. I played the game through the first time without the guide but then bought and read the guide cover to cover before starting the game over again (in Free Play mode). Really added to my enjoyment the second time through. Helped me find things I simply missed the first time. Enjoyable read, especially for a game guide. Great screen captures and art work. Lots of nice extras.

Good game guide, it's helpful, covering every chapter in full detail, history and free modes, even when sometimes it is not very clear it helps.
It misses some canister locations, among them, the most difficult to find, which is the one in the first chapter, but this is hidden in the elevator ramp behind the crane and it's accessed with one of the cars built in previous sections (attainable only in free mode)
It does not cover the locations for all the red bricks, this would help a lot.

2 out of 5 stars Disorganized and Text-Heavy.......2007-02-08

I haven't used a ton of game guides in the past, but I've seen enough to know that this one is worthless in the grand scheme of things.

                  Negatives
                  - Too much time is spent on worthless content -
In the tradition of many other guides, we spend page after page meeting the characters. A table listing the characters would have been more than enough information--especially since the photos are grainy blown-up screenshots.

                  - Too Much and Too Little -
There's way too much text on every page, and the text is small. Many game guides you can just kind of glance at as you're playing for pointers--this one you have to actually *read* the paragraphs.

The text that's there is also too vague. There aren't precise descriptions or locations, just general descriptions of the level.

                  - Pictures -
Why on earth there aren't more screenshots is beyond me. Instead of screenshots, there's a line map of each level.

Summary: This guide appears VERY rushed out to accompany a game release. It's heavy on text and isn't really that helpful. I think it'll go back on the shelf and I'll resort to the FAQs at Gamefaqs instead. A real waste of my $$.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best Prima guide..........2006-10-08

Normally, Prima guides are top-of-the-line. Normally, they provide everything you need in a concise and easily navigated form. Unfortunately, this guide isn't the norm.

The problem is simple- the actual "walkthrough" of the game is presented in straight text, with basically no indexes or tabs. Want to know when or how a specific character is unlocked? Good luck. The closest you'll get are tiny indicators of what characters star in each sub-chapter of the game (these charactes are always unlocked when completing that sub-chapter)- you'll have to page between sections trying to spy the location Story characters appear. And some characters have to be unlocked outside the normal game- there's not even a listing of who those characters are or what the unlocking requirements are.

The biggest reason I bought this Guide was because, to find 100% of the hidden items, you have to retrace your steps from Story Mode in what's called "Free Play". Some areas intentionally require certain characters' special abilities to reach, and these characters can only be accessed by unlocking them elsewhere in Story Mode then coming back and selecting them for Free Play. Long story short- the sub-chapter breakdowns don't even tell you what characters you'll need when you come back for Free Play except in small inserts dispersed through the normal text. If all you want to know it what two characters you need to select to get 100% of the secrets in a Free Play area- you'll have to read all the way through the text (again).

The guide is wonderfully illustrated. The maps are accurate and easy to read, and the narration of the game is thorough. You will unlock everything in the game if you have the patience to read and re-read this guide many times. But in the end, it might be much more reading than it needs to be. If you can find a free online guide (or even another companie's guide to this game!), stick with that. I just can't recommend this product very highly at all.

5 out of 5 stars I Would Encourage You to Buy This Book.......2006-04-21

It has helped me accomplish the hardest levels that I tried to defeat. It tells me what is in other episodes, and it gives me good facts about the characters. It has helped me along the journey from Episode I to Episode III.
