Book Description
Curl up in your favourite commander air chair, and gear-up for the long haul with veteran trucker Don McTavish. Big Rig takes us on some eye-opening, highly comical road trips, through the eyes of a driver and his fellow truckers over a forty year period. Twenty-five short stories are divided into five parts, including, "In the Beginning," "Colorful Dudes," "Goofy Situations," "Weird Destinations," and "Crazy Cargo."
Meet "Lonesome Len," the "Pistol Packin' Partner," and "Tiny" in these fun, engaging tales which reflect unusual events and humourous predicaments experienced by the author during his impressive trucking career.
Customer Reviews:
Laugh out loud!.......2003-07-07
Any book that can make me laugh is worth a minimum of three stars. Don McTavish uses up 165 paperback pages to give a humorous glimpse into various forms of trucking, from his early days as a teenage yard boy, through to obtaining his driving licence, oil patch work, logging and high-mile hauling. Any trucker can relate to the stories and any enthusiast or persons seaking a career change and considering entering the industry will gain some useful advice and insight and plenty of laughs along the way.
Although the cover depicts a Mack, much of Dan's material involves transport in the sixties and beyond, much of it spent in Kenworths, including team driving a 1960 cabover KW with twin gearboxes.
For some old-school trucking fun, nostalgia, and a mix of diverse characters and experiences, this book is a gem.

Big Rig 2 - Great Fun To Read!.......2007-10-11
Big Rig 1 was a funny book, and Big Rig 2 just continues with it. You will laugh if you have a "funny bone"... or if you aren't a big laugher, you will surely smile! This author has a style of telling stories from his past trucking life (and that's what these are, a collection of true, funny stories) that few share. I'd love to see more!

70's Gold in Black and White.......2003-09-10
Published in 1975, this book of 160 pages, sports an introduction which states "this [book] is not about but rather by a group of men and a few brave women who represent, more than any swivel-jockey, what the American dream is, or at best was, all about"
The book is a black and white pictorial essay on interstate trucking in the USA at the time. The lyrics of many songs are
printed throughout the book and the writer conveys the sentiments and comments of truckers about the romance and reality of the long distance truck driver.... the last American cowboy.
If you liked the books 'Hammer Down' or 'Cult Of The Big Rigs' then this book will be a valuable addition to your collection.
If you are looking for an encyclopaedia of the various truck makes and models, this book wont deliver. While there are quite a few pictures of Kenworths, Whites, Peterbilts, GMC, Diamond etc, there are as many photos of drivers and truckstops.

Book Description
Trench art is the evocative name given to a dazzling array of objects made from the waste of industrialized war. Each object, whether an engraved shell case, cigarette lighter or a pen made from shrapnel, tells a unique and moving story about its maker. For the first time, this book explores in-depth the history and cultural importance behind these ambiguous art forms. Not only do they symbolize human responses to the atrocities of war, but they also act as mediators between soldiers and civilians, individuals and industrial society, and, most importantly, between the living and the dead. Trench art resonates most obviously with the terror of endless bombardment, night raids, gas attacks and the bestial nature of trench life. It grew in popularity between 1919 and 1939 when the bereaved embarked on battlefield pilgrimages and returned with objects intended to keep alive the memory of loved ones. The term trench art is, however, misleading, as it does not simply refer to materials found in the trenches. It describes a diverse range of objects that have in some way emerged from the experience of war all over the world. Many distinctive objects, for example, were made during conflicts in Bosnia, Vietnam, Northern Ireland and Korea.
Surprisingly, trench art predates World War I and it can be made in a number of earlier wars such as the Crimean War, the American Civil War, and the Boer War. Saunders looks at the broader issues of what is meant by trench art, what it was before the trenches and how it fits in with other art movements, as well as the specific materials used in making it. He suggests that it can be seen as a bridge between the nineteenth century certainties and the fragmented industrialized values and ideals of the modern world. This long overdue study offers an original and informative look at one of the most arresting forms of art. Spanning from 1800 to the present day, its analysis of art, human experience, and warfare will pave the way for new research and will be of great interest to cultural and military historians, anthropologists, art historians and collectors.

A Fabric Lover's Dream.......2000-09-30
This book is a must have for anyone interested in fabrics and fabric design. Opening it is like entering a new and beautiful world. With page after page packed full of information, the reader is led on a unique tour of India, its past and present as seen through the sari and the countless styles of the weaves, prints, wraps and history. With many diagrams, definitions and examples along with the beautiful photos of the fabrics this book goes a long way in education and is a delight to own.
Draped in Colour And Beauty!.......2000-09-16
I had been looking for a book about sarees for a long time-and I really lucked out when I found this. The colour photos are magnificent-you can see the detailing and the richness of the fabrics very well, and the quality is excellent. Not to mention, the text is fabulous-the history of the saree is very interesting, and I especially like the way the book is broken down into regions, with each region detailing its saree style. The hand-drawn illustrations showing the many different ways to drape a saree were easy to follow and informative. The only gripe I had with this book-which I feel was very important-was the relatively small number of photos of women actually dressed in the sarees. A beautiful saree just hanging there is nothing more than a pretty piece of fabric-when it's draped around a lady's body it takes on a whole new dimension! However, this is the only and best book I've found on this subject....and if you're a saree lover or a fashion historian, this book is for you!
Fabulous !!!.......2000-08-14
This book contains EVERYTHING you want to know about this wonderful fabric. From its amazing history to how to wear it. Lots of colorful pictures and illustrations in black and white. Love it !!!
Book Description
The history of the sari links an ancient north Indian terracotta of a woman wearing this simple garment to the saris created by twentieth-century Paris designers. The essential simplicity of the sarian untailored length of cloth measuring between four and nine meters long by approximately one meter wideis set against a wonderful variety of fabrics, colors, patterns, and draping styles. There are richly diverse regional traditions of color, pattern, and weave, analyzed comprehensively here through a six-fold division of the Indian subcontinent: the West; the East; the North-East and the Himalayas; the Eastern Deccan; the South; and the Western Deccan. Each section is accompanied by a dazzling display of sari types in color, all specially photographed.
The result of many years' research, the book contains the most detailed analysis of sari design ever undertaken, with a comprehensive guide to the symbols, patterns, and motifs used, together with their origins and information about how they have evolved. Many rare and unusual saris are featured, along with photographs of the designs and diagrams of over forty sari types. A substantial reference section includes translations of more than four hundred Indian words and concepts, a glossary of textile terms, information on museum collections, a full bibliography, a detailed chronology, and a table of sari measurements. 470 illustrations and phtographs, 206 in color.
Customer Reviews:
Good for a start.......2005-09-22
This is a good started book. When I was first researching India and the place of saris in Indian culture, this was a wonderful big picture view of the place of saris in Indian culture. It's lovely and well-written.
As I got to know more about saris, I found that this wasn't a source book. It's a little too high level to serve as a concrete basis if you are looking for historic information.
Great gift book! .......2004-10-13
I got this for my mother as a Christmas gift -- she is interested in Indian textiles and techniques, so this made the perfect gift. In fact, I would recommend this as a neat "coffee table gift" book for your trendy or artistic friends as it is sure to be unique. I have no idea of textiles, but really liked the way the book was laid out. Of course, it is a niche topic.

Networking for Dummies upholds the series' proletarian tradition by entertainingly explaining local area networks (LAN) to the rest of us. Written with three different--but equally "clueless in technical matters;quot;--audiences in mind, Lowe's book appeals to novice network users, novice network builder/administrators, and the managers who must finance the activities of the other two groups.
A large part of this book is devoted to user issues such as "Accessing a network drive from WordPerfect" and "What is a print job?" Other chapters explain the differences among the various network architectures and network operating systems. In addition, the book pays a lot of attention to troubleshooting, particularly for common problems.
For these reasons, Networking for Dummies makes a fine resource for people who are new to a networked environment. If you are a network administrator, you might want to get a copy (or three) of this book for the corporate library and refer it to all askers of brain-dead questions.
The book's primary shortcoming is its ignorance of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Novell IntranetWare. (Coverage of NT stops at version 3.51 and coverage of NetWare stops at version 4.1.) Still, lots of organizations still run these network operating systems, and if yours is one of them, this book may fit your needs admirably.

To difficult for dummies.......2006-11-04
This was not for dummies, I found it difficult to follow and to look up specific problems. Did not care for this book. Not too helpful
Out of Date - Don't Waste Your Time.......2005-08-20
Too many pages on equipment that is way out of date:
Coax cable w/ BNC connectors?
ISA Slots?
Tuning a Windows 95/98 or Millenium Edition Server?
Plus the writing is extremely corny...
A Good Place to Get Started.......2005-02-24
I've often thought that computer books tend to leave out the first forty pages or so that tell you the broad picture of just what it is that you are trying to do. This book can almost be viewed as the front end of any number of dedicated networking books that start off just about where this one ends.
This book starts off with the most basic descriptions: "A network is nothing more than two or more computers connected by a cable (or wireless adapter) so that they can share information. From there it goes on to talk about how to set a network up. It's intended for the complete beginner and talks about things like cables, routers, hubs and so on in a simple and clear language interspersed with enough humor to keep you from going to sleep immediately.
This book is in reference format, it's not intended to be read from start to finish. Each chapter is self standing so you can go read about your problem of the moment. This book is specifically aimed at the beginner. If you're looking for something on trouble shooting or some of the esoteric aspects of networking you need something higher up.
The dumbest of the dummies.......2005-02-21
I completely agree with all of the other 1-star raters. I was looking for a guide for troubleshooting and fixing problems with peer-to-peer networks (which most homes and small businesses use)-- and this book just ain't it.
Truly for Dummies.......2004-09-03
Purchase this only if you have a minute idea of what a computer is.
This is very elementary and assumes you have absolutely no knowledge of what a network even is. It doesn't go any further than that either.
Don't expect that you will be learn how to network computers together (my expectation); only that you will learn what components are involved --but not how they work or how to actually network them.
I don't mind basic info, but this book should be titled "Network Equipment Descriptions for Dummies" certainly not it's current title.
Way too many jokes as well (more annoying than entertaining).
