Book Description

The rare book dealers who delighted readers with the history of their bookselling days in Old Books, Rare Friends now offer the other side of their story -- an intimate look at the joys of a relationship that has lasted more than half a century. When their friendship and business partnership began in the 1940s, Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern were pioneers in a man's world. Now approaching their nineties, the duo, who -- among their many discoveries -- unearthed Louisa May Alcott's pseudonymous blood-and-thunder stories, remains a vibrant institution in the rare book trade, even as the Internet changes their field -- and their community -- forever.

After publishing Old Books, Rare Friends, Rostenberg and Stern received a flood of fan mail asking about their personal lives, and they have responded with poignant honesty and the warmth for which they are famous, as they reflect on their lives and their remarkable partnership. Bookends recounts their fascinating histories: family backgrounds, business adventures, the men they did not marry, and their approach to the bittersweet trials of aging. More than just a dual memoir, Bookends is also a chronicle of the cultural changes of twentieth-century American life and a loving farewell to the golden age of book collecting. Filled with wisdom and humor, this volume is a tribute to Rostenberg and Stern's passion for the written word -- and for life itself.

Catching us off guard with their candor, they offer their insights regarding their business, their way of life, and their worldview. Above all, they present the story of a special relationship. At a time when people find it increasingly difficult to connect, here we have the seamless story of a shared life. It is the unique product of an earlier time, yet it is a timeless reflection on the very nature of friendship. Though their fantastic partnership is un-reproducible, the ideal they have established, for the integration of one life so completely with another, contains lessons for all of us.

Without husband or children they created a loving home when this was uncharted territory for women. They nurtured a business and life partnership that has lasted more than half a century and has only gotten stronger with time. When the passing years began to claim one's hearing and the other's sight, they became each other's eyes and ears. A meditation on aging and togetherness, this book is also the narrative of two pioneering single, Jewish women making their way in tandem through a world largely organized to keep them in their place. It is a gentle, wise story, told in their inimitable style, sparse, unadorned, and honest. Their affirmations supersede their uncertainties. As they write, "Bookends support books and come in pairs...If the word encapsulates our past, it looks also to the future, and to the books -- lived together, written together -- that will follow." They confront the challenges of aging in a no-nonsense tone, and, in facing them, give us an ideal of enduring human friendship that can't help but touch the heart.

3 out of 5 stars "Old Books, Rare Friends" is a better read.......2002-04-07

If you haven't already read "Old Books, Rare Friends" by the same authors, then you may enjoy this title.

However, if you've already read "Old Books, Rare Friends," you'll probably be very disappointed. "Bookends" is a much shorter work, and much of it simply repeats "Old Books, Rare Friends."

"Bookends" leaves out most of the stories concerning the authors' book collecting and instead focuses on their relationships with others (e,g,., men they didn't marry, mothers, dogs).

Book Description

Biography of one of the most colorful, some might say eccentric, people the Canadian West has thrown out who also happens to be a climber. At a time when most men are thinking of retirement from strenuous activities, Don was busy setting records: the first person to climb all the 11,000 foot peaks in the Canadian Rockies and Columbia Mountains and the oldest person to climb Mount Logan, Canada's highest mountain.

Apart from Don's climbing achievements, for which he received the Banff Mountain Festival's Summit of Excellence Award in 1990, Don is renowned for his idiosyncrasies which the author and Don's friends have documented in hilarious detail.

5 out of 5 stars Fun reading if you love the outdoors!.......2007-07-14

If you are an outdoors person, particularly in the North American west, this is a great read. Sure, it's not long on psychological insight or personal conflict, but as the story of a remarkable outdoorsman it's a sure motivator, and is especially fun to read as you tour the Canadian Rockies. I suspect many of us learned to love the outdoors on outings with our fathers, and while most fathers can't compare with Mr. Forest, his and his family's experiences will bring back your own fond memories. This book isn't just about Mr. Forest's prodigious climbing career, it's about how he shared his love of the mountains with others.

Another reason I liked it is because the book is definitely home-spun. These aren't stories about maladjusted peak-baggers or misanthropic daredevils of the mountains, they're stories about the kind of people you or I might share a rope with. And the kind of people who aren't just good in the outdoors, but are also down to earth enough to be likable. In short, it's not death and desperation a la Everest, it's good times in the wilds with your pals. I admit prejudice because I'm familiar with some of these folks, but I'm sure anyone would identify with the characters here.

Lots of good pictures too.

Book Description

Les enfants du paradis, a magnificent picaresque saga of parisian street life and popular culture, has been called the greatest film ever made. Completed during the occupation, it nevertheless boasted the largest set ever to have been built in a French studio, a crowd of extras and, under the direction of Marcel Carne, some of the most accomplished technicians and actors available (including Arletty and Jean-Louis Barrault as the central couple doomed to remain apart).
Jill Forbes examines how, at a time of crisis, the film reimagined the history of France. Although les Enfants du paradis is escapist, even fantastic, Forbes finds in it a radical, counter-cultural sensibility concerned with destabilising social hierarchies and prescribed sexual roles and questioning the opposition between life and art.

3 out of 5 stars c'est d'accord.......2000-05-04

As I'm not as big a fan of Carne's filmas the author of this book appears to be, I'm probably not the best qualified to review her study. While I admire the amount of research that has obviously gone into it, her understanding of the histotical and cultural traditions to which it belongs, the film itself seems to get lost somewhere. Unlike many books in the series, we learn little about the author herself and the impact it's had on her life. The historical information is interesting, but it didn't make me want to rush out and watch the movie again.

Curtis White's The Middle Mind: Why Americans Don't Think for Themselves--which grew from a 2002 Harper's article—examines as its titular object the dominant American liberal, pseudo-intellectual consciousness. "The Middle Mind" disdains hard thinking and true examination of corporate and political forces that act upon it. In the book, White dilates on his notion of an American Middle Mind to imagine a world beyond it, but he frequently gets lost on his journey. He finds three sources for this American malaise: the entertainment industry, academic orthodoxy, and political ideology. But, as in the original magazine piece, the figures he picks to condemn within this triumvirate are a bit surprising, even while his attacks are unremitting. NPR's Terry Gross, for example, is characterized as one whose work is "useless for the purposes of intelligence," and her show is dismissed as a "pornographic farce." In his critiques, White claims to be resisting the classic high-brow/low-brow cultural distinctions; or, rather, he sees the Middle Mind as having absorbed them. But his frequent allusions to Wallace Stevens, Ezra Pound, and high Modernism long for a world that never was, a world of art and political resistance that was somehow accessible in its full complexity to all of America. While White wants a creative, intelligent, politically engaged American mass culture, his exemplars look remarkably like high culture icons and few modern intellectuals are left standing (notably Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, and Bill Moyers). By the end, his call for a "pragmatic sublime" diffuses into vague, postmodern-theory-laden discussion of artistic formalism and a celebration of David Lynch's film Blue Velvet as a model for resistance. In this context of exclusivity, Terry Gross's inclusive "Middle Mind" seems the more open space for true discourse. --Patrick O'Kelley

                    Book Description

Acclaimed social critic Curtis White describes an all-encompassing and little-noticed force taking over our culture and our lives that he calls the Middle Mind: the current failure of the American imagination in the media, politics, education, art, technology, and religion. Irreverent, provocative, and far-reaching, White presents a clear vision of this dangerous mindset that threatens America's intellectual and cultural freedoms, concluding with an imperative to reawaken and unleash the once powerful American imagination.

The Middle Mind is pragmatic, plainspoken, populist, contemptuous of the Right's narrowness, and incredulous before the Left's convolutions. It wants to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and has bought an SUV with the intent of visiting it. It even understands in some indistinct way how that very SUV spells the Arctic's doom.

Despite the fact that White's indictment of Terry Gross is somewhat one-sided and superficial (he ought to have devoted an entire chapter to her and her radio show), there is much truth in his complaints about her. Academic Cultural Studies deserves an even stronger negative critique here than White provides, although it must be said than any honest assessment of it would have to include an acknowledgment of the various useful insights and interpretations that have come out of that thick and tangled intellectual forest. My favorite discussion, and perhaps the most urgently needed, is his skewering of the awful movie Saving Private Ryan.

White is clearly a very intelligent writer, but he is also a cultural snob. His attacks on Terry Gross are just ridiculous and to chose her as your enemy at time when the Bushes, Cheneys, and Roves rule the country is patently stupid and banal.

5 out of 5 stars He started it!.......2006-12-02

Before I read this book, I thought Wesley Clark was going to save the world.
I thought Dave Grohl was a great musician.
Owen Wilson was my favorite actor.
                    I worshiped Douglas Adams.
For me, these opinions were very well-defined, and what's more, I believed they made me a unique person. I do not wish to explain how the change came about, because part of this book's appeal is the lack of any single, main effect it produces on the reader. What's it about? If you don't know, find out for yourself. You still might not know, but that's okay; I cannot guarantee it will work its spell on you. This is not an issue of your "worthiness" to understand it, but does have something to do with your curiosity. If you're a curious individual like myself, I strongly recommend you check it out. I cannot speak for the rest. Much as I would like to say, "You know who you are," I don't think that's necessarily true.

5 out of 5 stars Sorry if it is difficult.......2006-09-29

This is an excellent subject and a good book, but not an easy read. It demands above-average levels of attention and focus. I had to think while reading it, and that is just not pleasant.

                    Still, I highly recommend it.

The essay in Harper's was great...you could always go to your library and read that for starters.

                            Book Description

As much art book as guide, The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book: Creative Techniques in Digital Painting uses traditional drawing and painting theory exercises, coupled with real-life projects, to show readers how they can use Painter and Photoshop with pressure-sensitive tablets to draw and paint with a computer. Award-winning artist and author Cher Threinen-Pendarvis shares her own drawings and paintings with the readers, sharing her creative thought processes and composition design secrets that she uses in her own work. In this gorgeous, large format, full-color book, Cher takes readers step-by-step through a variety of projects designed to improve their drawing, composition, and conceptual thought processes while exploring different uses of the many brushes available in Painter and Photoshop. Along the way, Cher shows readers how to set up a pressure-sensitive tablet and stylus; use mark-making tools in Photoshop and Painter; create tonal, gestural, and contour drawings with a pressure-sensitive tablet and stylus; incorporate scanned artwork into digital paintings; use photos as a reference for the illustrations; make creative use of color and ideas for composition design; translate traditional color theory to digital color tools; simulate canvas and paper; create mixed media; and more. All the concepts, processes, and projects in this book can be applied to readers' own drawings and paintings, and the lessons and examples demonstrated in this book are designed to work with the most current versions of Painter and Photoshop, as well as most earlier versions of the software. In addition, readers will find brushes, textures, images and other goodies on the book’s companion Web site that they can use as they work through the projects in the book.

The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book: Creative Techniques in Digital Painting

While I was not overly impressed with the art illustrations in this book I am very impressed with instruction. It explains the A-Z's of setting up your computer for Digital Artwork for both original art and photos. This includes setting up your pallates, naming/saving files, backup, etc.
Would recommend for newbies and experienced alike.

This book is a great guide to using the painters tablet with photoshop software. Very good reference.

3 out of 5 stars A good book if you know Painter already.......2007-05-07

This is a small book that I bought in a bundle with my Wacom Tablet. The book is pretty good about showing you how to paint in Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop, but you need to already know the software. There is no real "introduction" to the software. The book just assumes that you already know how to choose brushes and such, and takes you right into the painting methods. I like the book, but I don't recommend it to anyone who doesn't already know a bit about Corel Painter or Photoshop.

5 out of 5 stars High Recommendation from a Digital Artist.......2007-02-15

One of the most valuable things about, "The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book" is that Cher gives us a variety of projects we can do that will help us master digital painting.

Not only are we guided through how to use a graphics tablet and stylus in combination with Photoshop and Painter software; but through some of the basics of drawing and composition, as well. Plus, each project is accompanied by step-by-step examples that are refreshingly original and clear.

So, whether someone is new to the medium or has a decade of experience with digital painting like I do, Cher provides projects we can all learn from. Because of that, this book is a welcomed addition to my creative library and one that I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-01-18

I was disappointed in the book cause its more oriented for beginners, i was hoping to learn new techniques as i am more toward advanced. But the book itself is great for beginners and made a great gift for a friend of mine.
