Starting from scratch, simply by picking stocks and companies for investment, Warren Buffett amassed one of the epochal fortunes of the 20th century -- an astounding net worth of $10 billion and counting. That awesome record has made him a cult figure.

This illuminating biography reveals a man whose conscientiousness, integrity, and good humor exist alongside an odd emotional isolation. Buffett also masterfully traces his life: his enormously successful partnership; his early, inspired investments in American Express and Geico; his companionship and investment with Katharine Graham of the Washington Post; his role in the Capital Cities purchase of ABC; his unique relationship with his wife and mistress; and his rescue of the scandal-ridden Salomon Brothers.

Book Description

Since its hardcover publication in August of 1995, Buffett has appeared on the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, Newsday and Business Week bestseller lists. The incredible landmark portrait of Warren Buffett's uniquely American life is now available in paperback, revised and updated by the author.

Starting from scratch, simply by picking stocks and companies for investment, Warren Buffett amassed one of the epochal fortunes of the twentieth century--an astounding net worth of $10 billion, and counting. His awesome investment record has made him a cult figure popularly known for his seeming contradictions: a billionaire who has a modest lifestyle, a phenomenally successful investor who eschews the revolving-door trading of modern Wall Street, a brilliant dealmaker who cultivates a homespun aura.

Journalist Roger Lowenstein draws on three years of unprecedented access to Buffett's family, friends, and colleagues to provide the first definitive, inside account of the life and career of this American original. Buffett  explains Buffett's' investment strategy--a long-term philosophy grounded in buying stock in companies that are undervalued on the market and hanging on until their worth invariably surfaces--and shows how it is a reflection of his inner self.

5 out of 5 stars Buffett by Roger Lowenstein.......2007-10-17

Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist

This is a beautifully written book about Warren Buffett, one of today's most important business persons. Lowenstein is an experienced and deep business writer.

I have purchased many copies of this book as gifts for friends. As a business school professor at UCLA, I make reference to this book several times per year in my class.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Books I've Ever Read.......2007-10-14

WOW! This is one of the best books I have ever read. How inspiring!!! I felt that I really got into the mind (the thinking) of this man through Lowensteins account. I felt like I learned a LOT about big business and investing even though there are no direct "lessons" or strategies taught in this book. It also validated the way I run my own business as far as making quick judgements based on my gut knowledge, having a hatred for wasteful reports, and a slew of other "common sense" approaches to business -- including old-fashioned TRUST between business partners. This book was also a HUGE eye-opener about big business CEOs and the "merger" mentality in the business world. I used to think that these folks were so smart and knew things I didn't know. It turns out that Buffet was often doing the OPPOSITE of these folks, and the book is quick to point out the fallacy of their ways. It was also an eye-opener as far as what a "shareholder" really IS (or should be) according to Buffet. It gives me hope, and I am now ready to start thinking about how to get to that first billion! ...now...if I can just get my hands on those past Bershire annual reports...

5 out of 5 stars You can't copy an artist.......2007-09-01

Reading this account of Warren Buffet, I am in awe of this man's intellect and aptitude for what he has spent his life doing. Investing. You will soon realize that any hopes of copying Buffet's strategy or system isn't possible for the "average Joe". It would be the same to think you could produce an outcome exactly like Michaelangelo or Rembrandt-it can't be done.

5 out of 5 stars Buffett biography.......2007-08-04

I've found that if one has a handle on money, most everything else in life falls together. After reading this book, I put 90% of my savings in Berkshire Class B. 10 years ago. I tap dance everyday that I did. Oh, by the way, it's a great read. He was emotionally abused by his mother. Anything by Roger Lowenstein tells important money stories well.

4 out of 5 stars Great work - but could have avoided few chapters .......2007-07-21

Roger has done a great job portraying the life of master investor, especially the way he has described each of Buffet's major takeovers. I was about to give 5 stars, but at last moment I changed my mind to 4 stars because a few chapters I seem were out of context, especially the ones that describe more about his children and the ones that are totally dedicated to Salomon brothers. I guess these chapters seemed a liitle bit out of context.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2006-03-30

I found this book after attending an online class at bettertrades.com and have never been happier. It's simple and to the point, and makes clear all of the various strategies for trading in a volatile market. Go for the gusto and keep your losses small! (Because there will be some!)

2 out of 5 stars As basic as it gets..........2004-07-20

Could the people with an interest in the sale of this book please stop writing ridiculous one sentence reviews praising this very basic book! The reason most of the reviews of this book are one sentence is because it is the same person trying to restate biased praise. If you are absolutely brand new to trading, this book is fair...but beware. This book was suggested to me by a sales rep. at Wade Cook and you know what happened to him. That affiliation alone should scare you.

4 out of 5 stars Its Title Says it All.......2004-06-18

I've read some of the previous reviews that dislike the lack of technical analysis, especially in the beginning of the book. However, I must say that this book is about how someone could make a living by trading in the stock market, including setting up his own home office, incorporating, among other things not directly associated to trading stocks or options.

With that said, I believe this book is quite good. Its main objective is to give a trading novice a solid footing in what it takes to make a living by trading in the stock and options markets. It is a fast read that does not delve too much into the products Mr. Eldridge's company sells, but stays with the point of the book.

If you're looking for in-depth technical analysis of stocks, you might be disappointed in this book. However, if you're looking for a quick read that could benefit your portfolio or might quicken your transition from your day job to trading full-time, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2001-01-08

This is by far one of the best books for traders ranging from beginner to advanced. It presents market dynamics and trading strategies in easy to understand concepts. This book has proved to be invaluable in helping me make more money. As a matter of fact he even has a website at bobeldridge.com.

5 out of 5 stars Making a Living in the Stock Market.......2000-10-26

This is a great book. The author breaks away from the "buy and hold" philosophy and helps us to see that if we treat our investing like it was a business, then we can do well in "bull" or "bear" markets.

Book Description

First published in 1924, this book is dedicated to John Wing Prentiss, a new breed of stockbroker of that era. This fictionalized version of the other side of Wall Street covers the story of a brokerage firm from its founding through 1924 and shows how the stockbroker works from the inside and what he did to make millions without whitewashing and propaganda. This is a good teacher in a personal form where you learn a lot more about human nature and business after the age of the buccaneer but still before the great depression and security regulations which followed. 340 pages.

5 out of 5 stars damn good read.......2002-03-03

buy it...read it...enjoy it...do it...nuff said...period!

5 out of 5 stars Lighter fare than other Lefevre books.......2001-03-20

Enjoyable tale about the rise of a junior clerk through the ranks until he heads a stock brokerage firm. The tale overlaps in time and subject matter with most other Lefevre books but is less focused on specifics of trading and more focused on the story (a bit like Samson Rock of Wall Street in that respect).

Chapter 6 (pp. 57-66) has some wonderful trading stories--the book is worth it for those alone. I read it cover-to-cover in on sitting (flying from London to SF). If you long for Jay Gould ('J.G.! J.G.!'), the floor of the NYSE, the Lusitania Break, the Panic of 1907, the brass ticker, physical scrip, and the story of a timber man from Bangor Maine who becomes a brokerage clerk in Boston and then rises to head a brokerage firm in Wall Street, then this book is for you. He also discusses the bomb that left those still visible blast holes in the old JPM building at Wall and Broad. I've touched those holes, been to Bangor (where many Vietnam vets arrived home), lived in Boston, stood on the floor of the NYSE and walked down Wall Street many times, so hearing about all these things 75 years past was an interesting walk down memory lane.

The book does place a little too much emphasis on the high moral character of the brokerage industry, but its pluses far outweigh its minuses. Cheap at twice the price.

4 out of 5 stars The other side of the market.......2001-01-31

This book is not a second part of Livington's Reminiscences, although the author is the same, but a different viewpoint over the same problems, anxieties and hopes that affect the market players. The book don't has market strategies, but this biography of a stockbroker can help us to understand a bit of the market's psicology and how the brokers see the trader's behaviour. Althought it had been written seventy five years ago, the people that work in the market today seems to react in the same manner that the old ones. It's a agreeable reading, but not recommended to people that look for market strategies similar to those found in Livingston's Reminiscences.

Women of the Street: Making It On Wall Street -- The World's Toughest Business, by CNBC "Business Tonight" host Sue Herera, aims the spotlight at 14 women who have made their mark in this traditionally unfriendly arena. Stars of the financial world like Mary Farrell of Paine Webber and Julie Stone of Smith Barney reflect on their paths to success and the consequences of their actions. The addition of some outside perspective could have made this good book even better.

Book Description

Women of The Street

Wall Street. Once the "ultimate men's club," it is now the high-profile arena of choice for those women who have proved to be as good—if not better—than their male counterparts at handling important clients with big money. Every bit as smart, determined, and confident as the men on the Street, they are no less established major players in the high-rolling, high-pressured world of finance. Today the women of the Street are among the most respected names in the business.

In this provocative, compelling compilation of in-depth and up-front interviews, Sue Herera—host of CNBC's popular Business Tonight—spotlights fourteen of these dynamic, ambitious, and powerful investment professionals. They are, as Herera points out, "true champions with compelling stories to tell and lessons to teach us about themselves, the often misunderstood world in which they work, and our society as a whole." Analysts, strategists, traders, and fund managers gifted with strong personalities, drive, and a keen sense of self—as well as a good sense of humor—the women of the Street are an accomplished and colorful group. They include:

Their candid conversations provide not only a rare glimpse at the individual behind the persona, but offer a quintessential commentary on what it's like for a woman to make it in a man's world. These fascinating women reveal where they came from, how they chose their professions, how they rose to levels of prominence, and what motivates them to stay on the Street.

But it has not all been smooth sailing. Their groundbreaking achievements defied convention and often were won in the face of fierce struggles: discrimination, the adverse attitudes of male coworkers, as well as the ongoing challenges of juggling their personal and professional lives.

Written by a leading financial journalist, and filled with the wit and wisdom of the brilliant, high-powered women who have challenged pin-striped conventions and blazed new trails, Women of the Street will be inspirational to men and women everywhere. These women of the Street offer invaluable advice and words of wisdom to all those who are thinking of following them into this fast-paced and competitive arena.

SUE HERERA, formerly of FNN, is the host of CNBC's popular Business Tonight, as well as co-anchor of The Money Wheel and Market Wrap.

"Men don't have some special genetic coding that makes them better fit for playing the markets. It's simply a matter of education and knowledge. Once you understand how it works, it's really quite simple (or equally as difficult).

"Women of the Street is a look at the women who shape the markets: where they came from, how they got where they are, and who they are as people. I thought it time for us to get to know them a bit better on a personal level: to hear how they came to choose their profession, many of them at a time when there were no female role models; to learn how they rose to levels of prominence and influence; to share in their success and failures; and to gain some insight into their personal and professional struggles, past and present."—Sue Herera, from the Preface to Women of the Street

"If you are a woman, you must read this book to see how to succeed in the world of finance. If you are a man, you should read this book to learn what the competition is doing!" —L. William Seidman, Chief Commentator, CNBC, Former Chairman, FDIC

"Women of the Street is a road map to success for any woman who wants to succeed in what has become the world's most exciting and fastest growing business. Sue Herera's stories of the tough, savvy women who have made it on the Street are an inspiration." —Bill Wolman, Chief Economist, BusinessWeek & CNBC Television

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Wall Street and the place of women in it........1999-07-30

I work in the business - this book is a terrific introduction to the rough and tumble, fast paced, pressure cooker industry known as Wall Street. Ms. Herrera profiles smart, talented, spunky woman - tough yet surprisingly tender cookies who shared determination and perseverance but chose very different paths and methods in pursuit of a career in an industry driven by ego, greed and money. They did it their way, overcoming roadblocks and stumbling blocks in the not so long ago male-dominated financial marketplace, establishing their place in an exciting, rewarding, albeit tough, industry, particularly for woman.

        Book Description

Is Ernie Harwell one of the most beloved figures in baseball? In 1991 when the Detroit Tigers decided not to renew his contract, various Domino's Pizza locations (also owned by the Tigers owner) received bomb threats. 72-year old Harwell had been the voice of the Tigers for over thirty years. Public outcry led the Tigers to rehire him. Harwell, a Hall of Fame broadcaster, was at the mike for Bobby Thompson's Shot Heard 'Round the World, Jackie Robinson's second year with the Dodgers, and the Tigers' World Championships of 1968 and 1984. And he's the only broadcaster traded for a player!

Harwell's life is more than just baseball. He interviewed golfing great Bobby Jones, and heavyweight champ Jack Dempsey. Gone With The Wind author Margaret Mitchell's former paperboy, Harwell assisted Life magazine in its coverage of the film premier. This memoir, like its subject, is unique and unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars A joy to hear broadcasting - a real joy to learn from him........2002-06-28

If we could only have more time to get to know people like Ernie Harwell, there would be a much greater appreciation for life in this world. Despite all of the many changes in his life, the opportunity to be around baseball for so many years, get paid to do it and enjoy it thoroughly...he has remained humble and human.

He is quick to tell you that he is "just a turtle on fence post", noting that we all know that turtle didn't get there by himself. He credits so many people for the opportunities that he has experienced...yet he has spent so many years positively influencing our lives, about life as seen through the many stories he tells via baseball.

Although I have only lived in the Detroit metro area for two years which limits my exposure to hearing Harwell call games all my life, I could immediately feel the respect and warmth of his broadcasts. Seeing him at several baseball and community events, I am always impressed with the attention that the sports stars give him when they are around him. Not only professional baseball players but professionals from other sports seem to delight in being around him and hearing the stories he tells with his charming southern drawl.

Whether you have the opportunity to hear him or you value hearing baseball stories that have something interesting to learn from in each story, you will enjoy this book.

If you are a person that enjoys learning from people that have shared their life with others and brought a positive influence to the world, you will enjoy this biography of a hall of famer.

        Thanks Ernie!

4 out of 5 stars The Voice of Baseball.......2002-06-02

Ernie Harwell popped up in a lot of unexpected places in the year 2001. On October 3rd, he broadcast the official recreation of the 1951 Miracle at Coogan's Bluff game for Major League Baseball's official website; later on, he broadcast the final game of a World Series for an all-time-greats fantasy league also run by MLB. Not bad, for a man who was fired by his longtime Detroit Tigers employees over a decade ago for being "too old".

"My 60 Years in Baseball" has a very unusual title for an autobiography. That's because it's not an autobiography -- it's a standard bio, written by columnist Tom Keegan. Presumably this was done with Ernie Harwell's full cooperation, and reprints of several Harwell newspaper columns highlight the book. I'm just a little confused by the use of the word "My".

I know Tom Keegan's columns from the New York Post, and "My 60 Years" reads very much like a 275-page human interest story. It's a puff piece, but in the best way possible. Keegan tracks down interviews with athletes, writers and friends who have known Harwell at various points along his 60-plus-year career, and the stories related are mostly heart-warming. The best chapter in the book is an interview with Denny McLain, one-time Tiger pitching ace, from his cell in federal prison. Even repeat convicts love the voice of Ernie Harwell.

Don't read "Ernie Harwell" because it's the best sports bio of all time, but read it to become more familiar with one of the last of the original (and now "old school") announcers. I listened to Ernie for the brief time I lived in the Detroit metro area, and I'm glad I had the chance. It's a specific style of broadcast, heavy on imagery and game detail, that's no longer in vogue and will be dearly missed when the last of its practictioners hangs up their microphones. Read the stories Keegan finds, and read again the reprinted Harwell columns, which are a delight of word choice, firm opinion, and humor.

        5 out of 5 stars A gift.......2002-05-15

Ernie Harwell has the ability to articulate his thoughts and possesses a vast reservoir of anecdotes and observations based on his lengthy career. The combination made this into one of the more enjoyable baseball books I've read in recent years.

        5 out of 5 stars A home run.......2002-05-08

As a young boy growing up in a Detroit suburb, I often fell asleep at night with a transistor radio and an earphone, listening to Ernie Harwell and George Kell broadcasting Tigers' games. I've been a fan since. This book brought back a lot of those memories. It was well written and a fitting tribute to a man who has meant so much to the game. Well done.

1 out of 5 stars unbalanced and often sparse.......2002-11-02

While it contains some useful information, this book is rather haphazardly written. Some years are beyond skimpy, and the information is in several areas dubious at best, if not blatantly erroneous. The anonymous author's tone is occasionally supercilious (think Joe Queenan), which is fine, if you're into that sort of stuff. I think the author finagled a way to give himself the one good review.

2 out of 5 stars Flawed as a reference tool, but somewhat entertaining.......2002-08-07

I purchased this book as a background reference, and was disappointed overall with its quality. Each year is divided into categories such as The Movies, The Players, Music, Literature, In the News, Sports, Television, and Fads & Fashion. The information provided for each section is sporadic and, in some cases, nonexistent. For instance, the movie Peyton Place is mentioned (1957) as is the television series (1964), but there is no mention of the book's publication in 1956. In fact there is only one book mentioned for that year and others, and no Literature entry at all for several years. (The '50s are particularly skimpy.) Apparently the only noteworthy happening during 1961 in the world of books was Hemingway's suicide. The subtitle claims "a roller coaster ride through six decades of pop culture in America," but it starts in the 1950s and ends with the year 2000. Isn't that five decades plus one year? Some entries are more review than revelation, and the psedonymous Biddle (it's not wonder a fake name was needed) calls Raiders of the Lost Ark "loud and crass," Braveheart a "depressing downer," yet oozes over louder, crasser, and far more depressing films. The author also claims the term "baby boomer" was coined as late as 1984. In addition to factual errors, omissions, and unwarranted commentary, the editing is slipshod, the text riddled with comma splices and huge paragraphs about the O.J. episode that slip from present to past tense about every other sentence. There are better books, It Was a Very Good Year: A Cultural History of the U.S. from 1776 to the Present by Vincent dePaul Lupiano and Ken Sayers for example, which is unfortunately out of print. It's far more thorough and even has an index. This book was entertaining at times, but that was derived mainly from imagining what sort of writer would use so smug and pompous a tone in such a haphazardly assembled book.

          5 out of 5 stars I liked it. I really liked it!.......1998-02-13

This was so much fun to read, I read it twice. I used it all the time as a reference book, too.

I am so thankful that Roxane Burnett has written this book. It is simply written so that anyone who has the desire to learn how to work with their own energy can use this book. It is a beneficial step-by-step instruction that teaches you to identify and manage your own energy field along with other tools. Through using the tools in the book she shows how to gain more certainty and command in your life. I love reading her stories and appreciate her talent to easily illustrate through words the valuable teachings. I recommend this book highly to many clients in my personal consulting business.

5 out of 5 stars Energy Tools Work at Work!.......2002-08-27

I am a public school teacher and until I discovered these Energy Tools, my days ended with stress headaches and an upset stomach. I've also had the privledge of taking the beginning seminar. I practice the tools everyday, at home and in the classroom. I am now able make the classroom environment more condusive to learning. The students seldom argue and the days have returned to being fun. I've even introduced some of the Energy Tools to the students and they enjoy the sense of power and certainty they now experience. Thank you, Roxane! No more stress and nausea for me.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, effective and fun!.......2002-08-08

The energy tools in Spirit Matters are very useful in my massage practice. This book presents these tools as exercises which are clearly and concisely laid out. They are simple to do, yet I have found them to be very effective. I am finding the grounding tool as well as the use of the rose to keep personal energy between me and my massage clients to be especially useful. I've read many books on energy for personal and spiritual growth and find Spirit Matters to be excellent. The stories illustrating the tools are fun too.

5 out of 5 stars Change Your Life.......2002-08-08

By using the principals as outlined in this powerful book, you will be able to change your life for the better. Each tool that is explained, if followed consistantly, will give you a new insight into your life and the changes will be noticable. I am now reviewing the tools and find that what used to be a concern or aggrivation is now viewed from a detached view point and no concern or aggrivation occurs. If you are willing to follow the book's teaching, you will become a person that you like.

                    Book Description

If I gave you a box of carpentry tools, could you build me a house? While having the right tools to do a project is a great first step, you still need to learn the overall process of how and when to use those tools to achieve your goals, knowledge that few other web design books present. This book starts from the assumption that you have the right tools -- an Internet connection and a web authoring program or an HTML reference book -- to begin with. (If you don't, the first chapter will bring you up to speed.) Then in clean, clear language, it steps you through the web design and development process from start to finish, from a successful studio owner's perspective: Brainstorming site goals, gathering and converting content, developing a strategic site architecture, balancing elements of tone, message, and navigation, prototyping and presenting designs, organizing and trafficking files, production, subcontracting, publishing and promotion. Whether you're working on a 5-page site for your community organization or you're the project manager for a huge portal site for a Fortune 100, this book will provide you with the essential strategies and checkpoints that ensure a successful web site.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2005-12-14

Without this book I would have never been able to start my own web design business (http://www.stormfrontproductions.net). Stormfront Productions has grown considerably over the last year, which is solely based on creating quality web sites (which was learning from this book). It explains how to get started in web design and how to create professional web sites for yourself or your future clients.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book........2005-09-02

I never have been good with design, but now I feel more confident.

4 out of 5 stars Make Sure You Know What You Are Getting.......2005-07-22

This book is not what I thought it would be nor was it really geared towards a person like me. From the title, I thought I was getting another book on the mechanical aspects of putting together a web site in a professional manner. It is on putting together a website and I suppose you could say it involves some of the mechanics of doing so but these are the background mechanics of procedures, checklists, things to look for and watch out for, resource that might be of help and things like that. It does not cover the mechanics of HTML coding, setting up frames, CSS stylesheets, templates and such. Those are left to other books.

That being said, if you are part of the target audience, those wishing to go into the web site design business or given the responsibility of running a website for a company, this book can be a handy background tool. It explains options, industry trends and many of the things which will have to be thoughtfully considered in order to put together a decent site. Again, this book focuses on broad conceptual practices and not on specific means of achieving ends.

Information is provided on five main topics divided into five chapters. The chapters are called, "Gearing Up", "Essential Pre-design Tasks", "A Design that Works", Putting it all Together" and "Keeping the Site Alive". Additionally, there is an appendix which lists useful resources.

As I said, this book was not what I was looking for but seems to be well and simply written. My one concern is that it was written in 2001 and some of the specifics may be a bit dated. Still, I would think that the broad concepts covered are valid.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Text for Web Designers in the making.......2004-09-15

A fundamental knowledge of HTML and familiarity with a web authoring tool such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage will significantly increase the value you derive from studying this book. For the beginning/aspiring Web Designer this book offers essential information for going professional and becoming recognized in the field of web design. This book offers the reader valuable information about operating a web design business - and you'd be amazed at certain bits of content that most people would overlook! The author also supplies links to many resources her team uses in upkeeping the web services they provide. The book will make an excellent addition to your web library especially if you are just starting new in the competitive web design industry - as with any trade, we become pros by working closely with other pros... in the case of this gem (book) it is a companion that holds you by the hand and teaches you how to operate a professional web design business. I would have given this book a 5-star rating had it not been for some of its outdated links that are no longer functional perhaps due to the fact that the book was published in 2001 and as of Sep, 2004, a 2nd edition is not available.

(Side Note: If you're looking for the techincal resource regarding web site design, which is also essential for becoming a well rounded designer, consider "The Complete Reference Web Design" 2nd Edition by Thomas A. Powell. It makes for an excellent web design reference. In fact strongly consider studing this book first before venturing into Anne-Marie Concepcion's "Professional Web Site Design <from start to finish>". Having studied the two books in this order, has enabled me to derive optimum value from them. You will gain "confidence" to move ahead strongly as a web designer if you study these books well, and keep your eyes open for changes in the world of Web Design.)

                    1 out of 5 stars Too basic.......2004-08-10

This book is a very thin overview of the Web development process. It takes around 30 minutes to read. It is very basic material, likely only relevant to people who have never done any Web development work before. Although I question the value of spending money on any basic overview books, I would recommend The Elements of User Experience over this one.
