Book Description
1923. This book has two purposes. The first is to tell the story of Henry Ford's life as he told it to the writer. The second is to introduce to the world a new Henry Ford. The Henry Ford of 1914 is gone. Scrapbooks covering the period when the press of the world was resounding with the news of the $5.00 a day minimum wage and the profit-sharing plan brought this discovery to the author. These scrapbooks sharply brought the writer's attention to the fact that the Henry Ford of 1922 did not speak as did the Henry Ford of 1914. Illustrated.
Product Description
A hundred and ninety-one. Mention the number anywhere near a ballpark and before you can ask who or what, fans will almost certainly shape their lips with a single word: Wilson. They ll tell you Hack Wilson, a burly, bull-necked outfielder who roamed Wrigley Field in the 1920s and 1930s, was the man who drove in 191 runs in 1930 more than most players had hits. A few of them will know that in 1929, Wilson racked up 159 RBI and hit 39 home runs. Still fewer might be able to tell you that for the four seasons 1927 1930, the slugger hit no fewer than 30 home runs a season and drove home no fewer than 120. But you are unlikely to find more than a handful of fans who know how the Cub great's career came to an end. Or when. Or why. The heir apparent to Ruth s title of world-beater, Wilson was a star by his late 20s and a record setter by 30. But he was also an alcoholic who was as practiced at swinging his fists as he was his bat. By his early 30s his days as a full-time player were behind him, and by 48 he was dead; his son refused to claim the body. This biography examines the turbulent life and career of one of the most dominant short-stint powerhitters ever to pull on a uniform. From Wilson s early career as a steelworker, through his time as the beloved ballplayer and icon for the City of Big Shoulders to his days as a down-on-his-luck baseball washout and itinerant laborer, an unflinching look at this Hall of Famer is provided.
Customer Reviews:
Hack Wilson deserved a better writer than Clifton Blue Parker.......2006-03-30
Clifton Blue Parker had a great subject in Hack Wilson but Parker fouled out with his writing.
Parker took a interesting ballplayer and turned him into a bore. His chapter "Hacking Toward Immortality" was written like it was taken out of a daily newspaper. To many mundane accounts of each and every RBI. It would have been nice to also have a little more info on his second wife in the years after Hack died.
It took me weeks to finish this book. I couldn't believe I spent so much money on this bio. I will not buy anything else from Clifton Blue Parker. I think he is a overrated writer.
Walloped!!.......2004-02-12
This book is full of lively anecdotes written in a thoroughly illuminating and informative manner. Learning about the highs and lows of Hack Wilson - one of baseball's biggest enigmas -- was a rollercoaster ride of fun. Heartily recommend it.
As Solid as Hack Wilson.......2001-05-30
I found this to be a very well written and very interesting book. Clifton Blue Parker has done an excellent and very thorough and complete research of a rather difficult subject, and pulled off a solid read from start to finish. Clifton Parker is correct in one of his assessments late in this book...People are forgetting Hack Wilson. Here today and gone tomorrow aptly applies to the career and life of Hack Wilson. That is sad indeed. Hack Wilson was a character of the game both on and off the field. What Mr. Parker has done is preserve a life, career and very important lesson in life in his book.
Clifton Parker puts Wilson's 191 RBI's into perspective and does not candy coat it. He backs it up with reasonable assumptions and hard facts. A tragic figure is Wilson, and Mr. Parker portrays him accordingly. Interesting how some of today's so-called athletes and heros are really no different than Wilson...
I consider this a must read for anyone that loves baseball history. This is as good a read as you will find. An interesting subject and an equally interesting read.
Hack Wilson De-Mystified.......2000-10-06
I read a lot of baseball biographies, and one of the worst things is reading player propaganda. It seems that hero worshipping infects far too many endeavors in the baseball arena, including biogaphies. Refreshingly, this book on Hack Wilson does not hero worship. It is a serious thorough accounting evidently based on plenty of research. It covers Wilson's rise and fall, from cradle to grave, with warts and heroics, and all. Prior attempts on Wilson's life never gave an adequate accounting of his life otuside baseball. The one thing that would have helped this book is any surviving members of the Wilson clan. That's no fault of Parker, who writes in an engaging, almost poetic, manner about this fascinating character out of Baseball's Roaring 20s. I hope to read more of his work!
Fouled Away, the Story of Hack Wilson.......2000-07-14
The author makes a diligint effort in telling baseball fans the accomplishments and lifestyle of Hack Wilson, one of baseballs most over looked Hall of Famers. The author does an excellent job tying in the roar 20's and the city of Chicago into the book. Wilson's best years were spent in Chicago at Wrigley Feild with the Cubs. All the accomplishments and downfalls of Wilson are noted. What the author does leave the reader wondering is first who exactly is this complicated yet modest man, which may be of no fault of his own. Second, the author fails to describe why the small West Virginia town of Martinsburg was so important to a man who was a star in the "Second City".

Customer Reviews:
Ni ce collection of short screenplays.......2003-08-08
The previous reviewers perhaps bought this volume by mistake, possibly not realizing that screenplays are a different sort of reading experience than regular fiction. I found the screenplays in this volume to be entertaining and quite professional. All of the authors are experienced writers, many with multiple produced screenplay credits.
Big mistake.......2001-07-03
I bought this book, but sent it back immediately. Unless you're a screenplay-writing-student, this book is of little value to you. It literally goes like this:
Man screams: AARGH! Woman cries: What are you doing? Couple leaves room.
All in all: think carefully if this is what you need. Don't buy it just for the scary cover!
Six awful screenplays.......2000-01-20
Not one of these stories was the least bit frightening. Some of them are so jaw-droppingly bad I can't believe the authors actually allowed them to be published without using pen names. Many of these screenplays bear all the marks of first-time screenwriters: boring protagonists, antagonists acting without any apparent motivation, page after page of dull padding... I can't list even the obvious problems in the 1000 words I'm allowed here. The writing styles range from Stephen King's "creative asides" which attempt to educate the reader in the art of screenwriting by telling us what to write instead of showing us, to Ed Gorman's rip-off of William Goldman's style (next time he should rip off a decent story, too). In all, the book includes four feature-length scripts, two shorts, and one 50 pager. In the title for this review I said "Six awful screenplays;" the seventh is a short by Harlan Ellison which isn't exactly horror, but it's a cute little murder story with a surprising yet inevitable ending. That and Dean Koontz's introduction are the high points of this book.

Book Description
Dogs eat burritos, camels smoke cigarettes, and frogs drink beer. Welcome to the Century of the Consumer. In the 20th century, Americans were romanced by consumer culture, which in turn reflected the changing attitudes, priorities, and values of the country. This book compiles entries on 100 consumer products--ten per decade--that figured prominently in the rise of consumer culture in the United States, telling the story behind the century's most popular products, slogans, and symbols. A unique format provides glimpses into American popular culture from each decade in the century. In addition to the history of advertising, economics, and the media, students will learn how perceptions of class, gender, and race were conveyed through advertising-and how those perceptions changed from 1900 to 2000. A-Z entries for each decade include bibliographic information on the product, as well as vivid illustrations showing the visual evolution of advertising icons and strategies throughout the century.

Lots of missions and voice overs by Patrick Stewart.......2002-09-17
This game is pretty good with a few glitches. I love the fact that you can automate your ships to respond to threats. The buildup of resources could be a little faster though. Overall it's a fun game to pick up on the buget rack...

This book is great! It walkes you through the twenty missions of the game, and gives you tips on multiplayer games! Get it today, and enjoy!
Star Trek: Armada Official Strategy Guide.......2000-05-02
This is better than the publisher's strategy guide for Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. In addition to providing details on how to play the game, it also provides information on the actual missions of the game and also hints to successfully complete each mission.

Customer Reviews:
This Book Is "H.O.T.".......2007-05-06
Shane Rebenschied's Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Beyond the Basics Hands-On-Training (BTB:HOT) is the second book in a small series on teaching would-be developers how to effectively use Macromedia Flash in their web projects.
BTB:HOT is very well written. The author uses very clear instructions and appropriate graphics(screenshots) to illustrate the points being made. It is a very easy read, especially if you are weary of computer programming style books. The HOT series is written as if the instructor is standing beside you and telling you what you need to do.
This books was definitely written for the layman. This book was not written for someone who is looking to take Flash to the next level of professionalism. The book is very short (almost too short), and really doesn't include very much discussion about the possibilities that can happen with a particular project.
After reading this book and working through the examples, I determined that there really isn't anything new in this book that a seasoned web developer couldn't figure out after reading the first book in the series.
To finish, very good book, but just for novices.
Great!.......2006-07-22
This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!
Good tutorial book on Flash.......2006-05-17
This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.
Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program.......2006-03-02
Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site. The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.
My only complaint, if you can call it that, would be that if you are coming from a programmer's background, you will skim A LOT of pages. You've got to hand it to the author in how he really takes his time introducing programming to the neophytes, but I found myself actually reading only 1 page out of every 3-6.
If you already know how to program in any language, you could probably find the tutorials online to get by without this book, but the expenditure in time probably wouldn't be worth the price of the book.
Written by a good teacher.......2006-01-06
Excellent book. The author has obviously taught classes and adopted a style that can be followed by any type of reader/student. If you are a novice you will have no trouble following each step-by-step lesson and learn the topics covered. When you are finished with the book your skill level will have improved.
If your skills are advanced or intermediate you will be able to get through each lesson quickly and learn another way of accomplishing something. The videos on the CD are good and delve deeper into the topics covered in the book.
One of the main goals of the book is to teach the concept of object oriented programming. As you go through the book you build a web site, or, better, an application that loads the different applications you learn about in the book, all tied together by a navigation section.
The use of winks and jokes may seem inappropriate to some, but it kept things light for me and I even laughed a couple of times.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn how to produce Flash applications. You must know the basics of Flash, and you will not learn about tying to databases or using XML or web services. This is why this is the perfect INTERMEDIATE Flash book.
