Book Description

At first David Bruce wanted to write a traditional biography of his remarkable grandfather, a Russian Jew who immigrated as a child to America in 1911 and built a real estate empire here. But that format seemed to violate "Papa Charlie’s" impatience with verbosity. So David adopted the more accessible vignette style to pass along his grandfather’s singular humor, wisdom, and enthusiasm.

Now in this charming little book, readers will feel they are sitting at the knee of this kindly Jewish grandfather, listening to stories about his amazing life and to gentle advice for succeeding in your own. Along the way, you’ll learn about the importance of family devotion and the care of each of its members, responsibility for and generosity to community and to those who have less, good nutrition and a regular health regimen, devotion to religion, and some very savvy business tips - all spiced with memorable Yiddish expressions. If you never knew your own grandfather, or are missing him, this book will instruct, inspire, and soothe your ruffled feathers.

Conversations with Papa Charlie made me miss my grandfather and the stories he used to tell me. growing up in the Washington area, Charles E. Smith was a familiar name to me. I always thought it was a made up corporate entitity. It's nice to see that Chalres Smith was a real person, and not a heartless corporate giant. I recommend this book to all those who are looking for a little guidance in life, and for anyone who just wants to read some heartwarming stories.

I DON'T THINK I'LL FORGET PAPA CHARLIE FOR A LONG TIME. HE HAS TRULY INSPIRED ME!!!!!

It is nice to know that there are businessmen who are not just---interested in making money. This wonderful memoir shows how the elegant Mr. Smith, a Russian immigrant who came to America at the age of 10, went from rags to riches---twice. His initial success was achieved as a builder of homes and small shopping centers in Brooklyn, New York shortly before the Depression. Feeling that a stock market disaster was imminent, he confided to his partner-cousin that he wanted to get out of the business. But his cousin believing Smith to be irrational, talked him into staying in the business through 1929; in 1930, the agreed, they would stop building. Unfortunately the Crash came and Smith lost all of his money, but not his spirit. The lesson he learned--one of many he passes on to the reader in "Papa Charlie"--is never to go against your intuition. Smith eventually re-constructed his wealth--the second time in Washington, DC twenty years later--but in the end retired suddenly at the age of 66 to spend the rest of his life as a philanthropist. In the 28 years he was to live, he raised money for numerous causes, and co-founded the Institute of Psychobiology in Israel. As his grandson-author, David Bruce Smith, reveals, Smith would also peruse the Washington Post each morning, looking for human interest stories that moved him. The reader learns about the poor woman for whom he bought a washing machine, the friends he helped during financial reversals, and the kind and compassionate way he treated his employees. Reading Conversations with Papa Charlie was a moving experience for me. I would recommend it for ANYONE. Smith's story makes you believe that Good Samaritans still exist.

5 out of 5 stars You Won't Forget Him.......2000-10-18

Every day, we hear names of business giants such as Bill Gates or John D. Rockefeller. But what we don't hear is the story of what makes or made these men who they were. How they lived. Who they loved. What inspired them. What they ate for breakfast.

Conversations With Papa Charlie gave me a real look behind the scenes at Charles E. Smith--one of the biggest names in real estate. I discovered who Charles E. Smith really was--his successes, his failures and lessons--not just for business but for life.

It is a magical and charming memoir that I would recommend for anyone of any age who wants to be inspired.

    Book Description

The filmmaking partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger was one of the most remarkable and visionary in cinema. They made an extraordinary range of films, from The Spy in Black and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp to A Canterbury Tale and The Red Shoes. With champions like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, and revived critical interest worldwide, they now find new generations of admirers. This illuminating new book looks closely at these classic films to explore their complex relationship to national identity, and their developing interest in exile, borderlands, utopias, escapism, art and fantasy. Moor reveals how the visual imagery of the films of World War II question current cinematic styles and how post-war films like The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffman-in their highly expressive use of design, music and dance--are international in character.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not Totally Made Out of Stone.......2006-05-29

Andrew Moor works beautifully in the small spaces of Powell and Pressburger's films, and he shows how the two men progressed from a series of spy/thriller/patriotic movies all planned to advance to cause of a besieged Britain during the Second World War, into a melodramatic and deranged world of total devotion to artmaking--the crazy TALES OF HOFFMAN and THE RED SHOES.

He is perhaps most interesting when he is most programmatic, in the chapter about the pastoral during which he discusses A CANTERBURY TALE and I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING. I must admit I sighed going in, thinking I was going to hear all about Raymond Williams and pastoral theory and this and that, but although Moor brings everything up I feared, his applications are really quite sound, brilliant even. Coming away from his analyses, we feel that yes, the Archers HAD to make this slight retreat (towards the country air of Canterbury and the Western Isles) in order to be able to reach for the bizarre, psychosexual heights of something like BLACK NARCISSUS. He even manages to make sense of the little short film, THE VOLUNTEER, which is to the oeuvre of the Archers what AVENTURE MALGANCHE and BON VOYAGE are to the otherwise comprehensible work of Hitchcock. Does the auteur theory triumph in Moor's study? Incomparably! And yet this time around we believe it.

Another reviewer here mentions that Moira Shearer is only referred to once in the book. But obviously Andrew Moor has a weakness for the incandescent Kathleen Byron and the candybox charms of Deborah Kerr. He's not totally made out of stone.

3 out of 5 stars Navel gazing for the initiated.......2005-06-15

I'll say it right off the bat: I'm disappointed. I was hoping for more (or anything!) about the actual making of the films discussed rather than lengthy psychological discourse about the often obvious symbolism contained in these cinematic treasures.
For example: there's nothing about shooting in the Hebrides but more than you could ever wish for on the psychology of Sister Ruth's red lipstick. That may not be a bad thing for some, but for $45 couldn't Moor have at least included a few more photos? (There are just a handful: The Archers, a promo shot of Robert Helpmann from Tales of Hoffman and stills from Contraband, Canterbury Tale, Colonel Blimp, A Matter of Life and Death and Black Narcissus.) The fact that the book's index lists an astonishing SINGLE mention of Moira Shearer should be another clue to fans hoping for more meat and potatoes rather than simply food for thought.
Moor has unquestionably written some interesting dissections, but the dissections are only of the finished films, with barely a whisper about the actual creation of them.
Powell and Pressburger are undoubtedly masters who created some of the finest films ever made. But for the steep price I was hoping for more.

Three years after the original publication of Playing the Future: What We Can Learn from Digital Kids in 1996, this breathlessly polemical defense of the techno-savvy youth culture of the '90s already reads like a document from another era. Back then, the Internet was still a strange new force, instinctively embraced by kids who'd grown up playing video games, instinctively distrusted by the grownups who ran the mainstream media. Standing up for the emergent digital culture--loosely associated with suspicious activities like raves, role-playing games, and piercing--took nerve and optimism.

And Douglas Rushkoff here supplies both in abundance. His argument: contemporary "screenagers," as he calls them, aren't being warped by new technologies, they're adapting to them. Their relationship to play, work, spirituality, and politics all reflect the contours of a new world shaped by the liberating logic of digital networks and chaos theory. It's a better world, Rushkoff assures us, and if the grownups know what's good for them, they will stop looking askance at the ways of digital youth and start trying to learn from them instead.

Ultimately, Rushkoff seems a lot more interested in making his argument than in making it stick. He flies from one loose logical connection to another--the secret link between fractal math and snowboarding, the parallel between Web browser interfaces and Federal Reserve notes--and he alternates between near-brilliance and utter implausibility as he goes.

But even nowadays, when the heated rhetoric that met the first wave of digital culture is generally giving way to more nuanced analysis, there's something contagious about Rushkoff's passionate faith that the kids are all right. He may not convince you, but after this intellectual joy ride is over, that may not matter. Like any good child of the '90s, you'll want to believe. --Julian Dibbell

    Book Description

A provocative look at how kids' culture can give us the tools for survival in the increasingly complex 21st century.

Do "The Simpsons" represent a leap forward in media consciousness? Do Sega video games and channel-surfing offer new strategies for coping in a world fraught with unpredictability? Can raves, snowboarding, or online chatting teach us something about adapting to cultural change? Douglas Rushkoff, "one of the great thinkers and writers of our time" (Timothy Leary) says yes, yes, and yes.

    * Revised and updated with a new introduction by the author
    * Hailed as "the brilliant heir to Marshall McLuhan" (New Perspectives Quarterly).
    * Rushkoff has been a consultant to Fortune 500 companies on the new media: "When Douglas Rushkoff speaks, TV executives and programmers listen--and pay him well to explain how to reach young viewers."--New York Times
    * Rushkoff's articles on pop culture, media, and technology have appeared in Esquire, Details, GQ, Paper, Wired, and Time
    * Rushkoff has written a regular weekly column for The New York Times Syndicate, and currently writes regularly for The London Guardian and The Australian
    * Rushkoff has appeared on CNN, "Larry King Live," "Frontline," "Bill Moyers," BBC News, CNBC, MSNBC, FOX, CBC, NPR, "NBC Nightly News," WOR, KQED, and dozens of other television and radio programs

"An exuberant progressive, [Rushkoff] contends that kids today, who were weaned on Macintosh and MTV, have developed adaptive strategies to live in a mediasphere in which CNN seems less real than Pulp Fiction....Rushkoff gently nudges us to loosen up and celebrate the pace of change in which our kids have learned to thrive...it's hard to argue with his contention that a hearty dose of the Net would give us a fighting chance of learning about the future that our children already know." --San Francisco Chronicle

"Makes dazzling links between chaos theory and Rodney King, snowboarding and William Gibson, rave culture and Star Wars...the literary equivalent of U2's Zoo TV."--Vox

5 out of 5 stars Mind expanding, a great read for Gen-X'ers.......2006-12-24

Took me a while to get through this one. Rushkoffs' Playing the Future: how kids' culture can teach us to thrive in an age of chaos is a very impressive read. Douglas R. illustrates a cultural transition that moves from linearity to chaos, from duality to holism, from mechanism to animism, from gravity to consensual, from metaphor to recapitulation, and from God to nature, all through the lenses of role-playing games, comic books, 3-d animation, and computer games. By far, the central theme of P the F is cultural movement we experience towards an organized chaos (fractel being the metaphorical shape Rushkoff uses) and ultimetly higher levels of organizations.

Rushkoff is a very talented writer being able to string together long and complex sentances that connect many different ideas in a relatively short space. This work is of impressive scope and it definetly dives deep into the nuances and intricacies of kids' culture and thier interpretation of the world. An excellent read

3 out of 5 stars One great idea, a lot of similes, and a few gaps in continuity.......2006-09-02

The cultural examples in this book are dated (fractals and Pogs?) but the general idea is still relevant: embracing the coming age of chaotic culture is a healthy alternative to Doomsday predictions about short attention spans and loose morals. It's Marshall McLuhan's Global Village, with "but in a good way" tacked on. If you already like the internet, you can probably skip ahead in the Rushkoff bibliography.

For kicks, two funny problems with this book:

    (1) Rushkoff is addicted to tortured metaphors and endless similes. This is painful to read, but also kind of hilarious during the entire chapter about the death of metaphor. The death of metaphor is a parabola? No, it's a rushing faucet. Wait, it's a type of childbirth. The death of metaphor is a metaphor!

    (2) Rushkoff likes chaotic culture because it's evolutionary, but he can't quite wrap his head around evolution itself as a chaotic process (at least he didn't in 1996). He repeatedly insists that evolution tends to climb a ladder towards complexity and that humans are the most "highly evolved" species: basically The Crown of Creation shoehorned into biological terms. Using a Judeo-Christian concept of species hierarchy to explain the decline of God and authority? Weird!

4 out of 5 stars An interesting perspective on familial relationships.......2005-05-27

The author asserts that parents can develop stronger, more positive relationships with their children if they stop criticizing and start appreciating and understanding the technologically advancing culture in which today's kids are immersed.

    5 out of 5 stars A startling accurate perspective.......2001-01-29

I admit it. I approached this book with a degree of skepticism. As a futurist, I'm interested in reading what others say about trends, but this one didn't strike me as worth more than a skim.

Whoa! What a surprise! I started underlining on the second page-of the introduction!

This book delivers a fascinating look at youth culture and relates that culture-and its implications-to our future. It's an enjoyable read, exploring a wide range of aspects of the culture of today's youth, our future employees and leaders. I gained a great deal of insight into the Millennial Generation, and I've been studying them for a while myself.

Every once in a while, I shook my head in bewilderment or struggled to get a connection, but that was seldom. As I moved from page to page, I had a recurring urge to discuss parts with my 14-year old step-daughter. Her response to my amazement and learning would probably be something like, "Duh. Don't you know this? Don't you get it?" Don't get me wrong; Samantha is not like all the different types of kids described in the book. But, she fits where she wants to fit in the picture . . . which is part of the picture.

The author is himself a card-carrying member of Generation X. This perspective is manifested in his writing, both in style and language and topic. I felt like I was getting a private interview to gain a deeper understanding of the teens and twenty-somethings. While I won't admit to being comfortable with all that I read, I do confess to having learned something. Actually, a lot of somethings. Now with a greater appreciation of today's youth, their culture, and their perspective on the future, I feel more secure in what will come in the years ahead.

Screenagers, Rushkoff's moniker for the generation he presents to us, is a valid and worthwhile study. Page after page delivers food for thought and consideration. Are you ready for the future? To know the future? We're surrounded by the future-and its movers and shakers-today. Better get to know these folks, how they think, what they expect, and where they're going.

Now that I've written my review, I'll give the book to my 14-year old, already a voracious reader. I wonder what she'll have to say about this evaluation and study of her generation. My guess is that she'll agree. . . and then go on to tell me more. What an intriguing discussion this will be . . . .

5 out of 5 stars In pure Rushkoff fashion... This book is fantastic.......2000-07-19

When it comes to new media, no one does it better than Rushkoff. This book, "Media Virus", and especially "Coercion"... all books shed excellent light on the information age.. and not just the doom and gloom or bubblegum optimism we usually get thrown at us. Rushkoff takes everything apart, explains it all in realistic ways, then puts it all back together for us. Like Coercion, this book should be on the required reading lists of every worthwhile college in the country. I am better prepared to handle the world and my job (computers) for having read this book.

      Book Description

Introducing a new series of innovative chess guides: each one presents in detail the key ideas of an important chess opening in a fresh, entertaining, and accessible way. The manuals reveal the current thinking of the world's elite players, giving novices a glimpse of how the champions achieve success. This first entry covers the Gruenfeld Defense, a favorite of the legendary Garry Kasparov. His good friend and confidant, International Master Michael Khodarkovsky, lets us into the secrets of Kasparov's preparation, explains the most important elements of the Gruenfeld, and provides an up-do-date survey of the critical lights. A "First Moves" section goes through all the basic opening moves; "Heroes & Zeroes" takes a look at the best and worst performances with this opening; and "What's Hot" pinpoints the very latest ideas from the world's elite. A detailed table summarizes the main variations, with assessments.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2005-03-10

Khodarkovsky's book the Grunfeld Denence Revealed is the first book in a series of Bastsford Publishing books about openings "revealed." I had read a somewhat unfavorable review and had no intention of getting it, until I stumbled upon it in a book store and found the structure of the book to be very interesting. The author, himself, states that the book does not set out to describe the opening in a strict order. For a well written book that is very systematic in it's approach, the Grunfeld Defence by Nigel Davies is probably the book of choice. However, Khodarkovsky's book is put together in a way that makes it very interesting and a lot of fun to read. The chapters include "first steps" which shows the first recorded Gruenfeld game, of course by Gruenfeld himself. I think it was a nice way to get started on the voyage to learn more about this opening. The chapter then goes on to discuss a game with the exchange variation and 8. Be2. The next chapter is entitled "Heroes and Zeroes." This chapter is full of annotated games which have been important contributions to Grunfeld theory. Included here are games in which the black side features Kasparov, Svidler and several lesser known Grunfeld specialists. The annotations are excellent, and on several occasions include contributions from the players themselves. The chapter on "Strategy" includes an overview of the exchange variation and the 4. Bf4 variation. The following chapter looks at "what's hot" at the GM level lately in regards to the grunfeld. In this chapter he looks at two variations, including "the modern exchange" which ultimately turned Kasparov off of the gruenfeld, after a loss to Kramnik in the World Championship match in 2000. Reportedly Kasparov had difficulty finding a good response to 8...Bg4 9. Rb1. In fact, this was his reason for switching to the Queen's gambit accepted, for his reply to d4. He stated that the gruenfeld was still viable with 8...Nc6, but it was becoming too time consuming to try to break down kramnik's berlin defence. Khodarkovsky shows an example of modern and effective use of 8...Nc6, played after kaspy had abandoned the grunfeld. The author then reviews the fianchetto variation, and the strategy involved. The next chapter is entitled "tricks and traps." The first game in this section is an example of the russian variation. The game is Doroshkevich vs Gulko 1975 USSR championship, and starts as follows: 1. d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3Nc3 d5 4Nf3 Bg7 5Qa4+ Bd7 6Qb3 dxc4 7 Qxc4 Bc6!? 8 Ne5 O-O 9 Bg5 Bd5 10 Qd3 Nc6. Here he says the careless 11 e4? leads to a tactical shot 11...Bxd4!. I didn't see any great tactical shot for black so I ran it in fritz 8 as well as reviewed it with a master level friend. The author did not give any more information on the position, and fritz's assemnent was white was slightly ahead at +0.5. The line would seem to continue 12. Nxd4 Nb4 13. Qe2 and white is doing fairly well. If a 2100 player and 2700 program cannot figure out the tactic, it is probably worthy of a more detailed explanation than the author provided. Anyway, the next chapter is very cool. It is entitled "test your skill" and is comprised of middle game positions stemming from grunfeld openings. You assess the positions, and learn about the strategy and tactics that can arise in the middle game in a question and answer format. It is followed by a section on solutions. I have several opening books, but have never seen this set up before, and I like it very much. There are not many reviews on this book, but the negative reviews tend to point out the next chapter, called "details." which is somewhat disappointing. The author has compiled 71 games in no particular order into this chapter, annotated with sybols only. This would be fine if they were organized or indexed, but they are just thrown together randomly. He concludes with one page of advice and a quote from Kasparov in preparation for entering battle with this exciting opening.
My overall assessment is that the annotations are outstanding. The background information about the opening itself and it's propents is very interesting. The structure of the book makes it a very enjoyable read - which is an absolute must, because it it very difficult to get through a boring chess book. As the author stated right from the introduction, it is not a systemic review. As such, this book is really best used in conjunction with a more systematic review of the grunfeld. For me, that is Nigel Davies' The Grunfeld Defence from Everyman Chess. It is thorough, organized and complete. However, it is not nearly as interesting as Khodarkovsky's book. I have looked at Starting Out, The Gruenfeld, and it looks a little to simplistic, although the author Aagaard is one of my favorites. There are tons of grunfeld books to choose from. If you are planning on getting just one, then you may want to choose one organized in the traditional manner. If you are considering a second book, then I think this one is excellent. It would be worthy of 5 stars if the "details" chapter was not such a deterrant to the overall quality of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a book about the opening.......2004-02-26

I believe that this book is an excellent complement to any other serious book about the Gruenfeld (Hartson's for instance.) This book emphasizes ideas and analysis. It takes you to the point where the middlegame is about to start and provides you with a guiding light to select sound plans and strategies. The book doesn't aim to become a complete treatise but to encourage the reader to think independently and understand what is happening during the game. I liked the excellent selection of games on the back and the way the chapters are organized. Almost each one of them covers very relevant material. For instance, the excerpts about the Seville variation are very valuable and should be read by any serious player. I believe that Khodarkovsky crafted a nice book here and I will keep on coming back to it to brush upon ideas and principles.

4 out of 5 stars New to Quicken.......2007-01-26

For someone who is new to quicken this book is a good starting point. The downside of the book is that it is probably a derivative of a long series of books. With each new edition the text becomes more verbose. Undoubtedly there are many features in Quicken. The base features should be explained and then the new features will fall into the scheme of things.

I bought Quicken to track my investments. I have entered several accounts several times to get the "error" free summaries I know to be true. I still do not know how to properly enter corporate bonds. When the newcomer gets involved, the details of the process are the burden of the user. Quicken has some help, but it is even more sparse for detail.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-06-18

Do you know how to set up Quicken to fit your needs? If you don't, then this book is for you! Author Bonnie Biafore, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical guide that explains Quicken 2006's basic features and answers questions you're likely to have, that can't be answered by the program.

Biafore, begins by explaining how to create a Quicken data file, create accounts and categories, configure preferences, and protect your financial information. Then, the author describes how to make deposits, pay for expenses, track the things you own and how much you owe, perform financial tasks online, reconcile your accounts, and care for your Quicken data file. Finally, she explains how to create and use budgets, track investments, and generate Quicken reports to prepare your tax returns or evaluate the state of your financial fitness.

In this most excellent book's pages, you'll find step-by-step instructions for using the most popular and useful Quicken features, including those you may not have quite understood, let alone mastered. More importantly, this book helps you evaluate Quicken's features and decide which ones would be most useful in your situation.

4 out of 5 stars Mac Users BEWARE!!.......2006-03-27

I was all excited about this book -- it sounded like just what I needed to learn Quicken. I started to read it and on page 10 I read: "This book covers the Windows version of Quicken. The program's development for Mac was completely separate-- and different--from the ground up. Accordingly, Quicken differs significantly on the two platforms." I was VERY disappointed. Nowhere in the Amazon description of this book does it mention that it is written for Windows users. Granted Mac users can probably get something out of it, but beware of what you are buying.

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Manual.......2006-02-08

Just as the cover says, "The Missing Manual," and "Exactly what you need to get started." Bonnie Biafore's book is a 'techie' manual that is informative and entertaining. It's even loaded with accounting and investing information that any average hard worker can understand.

Intuit missed the boat on this one...

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Guide For Quicken 2006 Users.......2005-12-30

For anyone out there that uses Quicken 2006 on a daily basis (and there are many happy users out there that do), one of the biggest complaints would probably be the lack of a manual to learn all the tips and tricks of how to get the most out of their application. Thanks to this outstanding book by Bonnie Biafore those pains will no longer be felt! Of all the great books in the Pogue Press series, this book is probably one of the most useful for the simple fact that it's territory that is not covered very well when you scan the books online regarding Quicken. Ms. Biafore explains the inner workings of this application like a seasoned pro. From inputting bills and deposits to tracking finances to creating reports, 'Quicken 2006 for Starters' is a great resource for all novice Quicken users out there!!
