Ted Williams at War
ASIN: 155553550X |
Book Description
Ted Williams (1918-2002), one of the most colorful and controversial figures in sports history, was a genuine American hero and cultural icon. Considered by many the greatest hitter who ever lived, the "Splendid Splinter" appeared in eighteen All-Star games, won six batting titles and two Triple Crowns, and, in 1941, was the last player to hit over .400. In addition to his accomplishments on the baseball field, Hall-of-Famer Williams served as a fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War, and was a tireless worker on behalf of the Jimmy Fund in the fight against cancer in children.
Williams' remarkable talent and passion for excellence, along with his stubborn, head-on approach to life and outspoken, volatile behavior, made him a favorite subject -- and target -- of sports scribes and other writers throughout his career. Although famous for his feuds with the press during his playing days, the temperamental star matured into a distinguished elder statesman of baseball.
This volume collects the best writing about Williams and some classic photographs of the hitter, providing a panorama of his brilliant ability and complex personality from his rookie year in 1939 to the memorial tributes following his recent death. It features thirty-five articles by celebrated sportswriters and best-selling authors, including Al Hirschberg ("Handsome Bad Boy of the Boston Red Sox"), Red Smith ("Ted Williams Spits"), Bud Collins ("'Saint' Goes Marching In"), Peter Gammons ("Williams an Unquestioned Hit with Him"), Ed Linn ("The Kid's Last Game"), John Updike ("Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu"), Donald Hall ("The Necessary Shape of the Old-Timers' Game"), John Underwood ("Going Fishing with the Kid"), Stephen Jay Gould ("Achieving the Impossible Dream: Ted Williams and .406"), and David Halberstam ("The Perfectionist at the Plate").
Taken together, the pieces offer a vivid mosaic of a true American great who is admired and respected as much by today's ballplayers and fans as those of his own generation.

More then just baseball.......2005-04-02
Im 17 years old and hardly pick up a book , but I couldnt seem to put this one down , I find myself reading this book 3 hours a day. These are all articles of Ted Williams life that go in order from when he was a young kid to a old man. Its not just about his baseball side , but also about his love of fishing and who he really is behind the baseball image. It doesnt just tell you that he did something but how he did it ( dislike fans , visited kids in hospital , hate writers , sent money to his father even know he hadnt seen him in over 10 years , and why he was so generous to others ). Ive read alot about Ted Williams but I learned alot more about him in this book. I highly reccomend this book to anyone whos interested in " The Kid "
This is a "must read" for all Ted Williams fans!.......2003-07-26

Reflections On A Splendid Life collects writings and photographs of Williams, from his rookie year in 1939 to his death in July 2002. He Was Just a Man.......2007-05-16
Hudson, Rock and Sara Davidson. "Rock Hudson: His Story". Carroll and Graf, 2007 (reprint), Aids Research Foundation, 1986.
He Was Just a Man
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
"Rock Hudson: His Story" was written at his request and is the definitive story of one of America's movie icons. When we learned tat Rock Hudson, America's handsome leading man, was dying of AIDS we were shocked. Or were we? There had always been rumors of his being [...] and when he was diagnosed, he, himself, decided to let the public know the "real story of his life". He and his closest colleagues and friends cooperated with author Sara Davidson to produce this authorized biography and to tell us who Rock Hudson really was. The result is an interesting book that takes us into the star's intimate life. We hear from Doris Day, Juliet Prowse, Susan Saint James and others ad Davidson also looked at interviews and letters, photographs and other documents as well as scrapbooks that Hudson's mother had kept.
Rock Hudson was a private man but when he realized that his life was nearing its end he decided it was time to be truthful because as he said about the story of his life, "it sure as hell hasn't been told before." There are no sordid details, no sexual escapades. He tells of his life as any of us might, simply and caringly. Now that he is gone, we can only attest to the book's accuracy by believing what he said that this is definitive life story.
The book is simple and requires no thought but that does not mean it is a not a good read. There s no gossip, no stories about clandestine love/sex affairs. There is truth and it is presented in a straightforward manner. I am sure that more exotic and erotic books will come to be, but this is the one that Hudson wants us to read so let's accept that.
ROCK HUDSON.......2000-09-05
i never knew much about rock hudson, only that he was an actor, and that he was gay, but after reading HIS STORY i was able to see that there was a lot more to him than that stated. roc hudson was a caring, funny, and love-filled man who only wanted to entertain and live his life openly, never wanting to hide his lifestyle or those he loved. he was a great actor and starred in several classic films(GIANT, MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, A FAREWELL TO ARMS, and PILLOW TALK with doris day). but he was also a great person and and a great friend and this book does a terrific job in showing that. the book openly discusses his homosexuality and the relationships he had with other men, men who he loved dearly. it discusses his much publicized marriage to phyllis gates as well as his struggle to maintain that tough hollywood image that was forced on him and it sadly leads to rock's fight with AIDS, one in which he lost. it is a great book about a great man, actor, lover and fighter.

"Sardonic⦠Ribald."-Penthouse
From the author of the revered Tales of Times Square, here's reporting from licentious New York City of the 1980s-a compelling assortment of pimp laureates, porn starlets, evangelical starlets, bizarre 42nd Street inhabitants, "the Strikeout King," and his stud-like counterpart, "God's Gift to Women."

interesting 42nd st history.......2006-06-19
This is an interesting and funny little book portraying some of the seedier aspects of NYC history in the 80's. Interesting characters and portrait of the time and place. Some stories almost unbelievable. Certainly nowhere close to being politically correct but at least honest in its portrayal. Fun and easy read but drags a little in a couple chapters.
A Loving Look Back at the Apex of Sleaze .......2006-03-06
As with the previous "Tales of Times Square," this book visits the glory that was Forty-Deuce back in the heyday of its vileness: the late 70s and early 80s. AIDS hadn't yet reared its head, Plato's Retreat and other sex clubs and bath-houses were still going strong, X-rated shops and theatres were all over the place, and prostitutes owned the streets.
Ah, the good old days.
Friedman approaches everything with an honest and open-eyed wonder-- he was at the center of things as a very youthful contributer to Al Goldstein's SCREW, and he meets some memorably loathesome people, as well as some endearing ones. His writing is mostly crisp and entertaining, but be warned: if you find sex icky, you might want to stick to the romance section of the bookstore. Sex here is a commodity, and porno is a business. Along the way we learn how Josh lost his virginity and his favorite starlets to whack off to-- it's that kind of a book.
Nice to know that the son of one of my favorite authors, Bruce Jay Friedman, is carrying on the tradition of mordant humor and jaundiced commentary on the less respectable side of things...

Customer Reviews:
Im in agreement with Dr Stinkface.......2006-08-04
im moving over from vb to c#, so naturally I would like to see examples written in c# so I can get the semantics down.
This book does not do that. Half in c#, half in vb, fully useless.
Next time release 2 versions of the book. Or better yet, write some of it in vb, some in c#, some in python, some in perl....
Not for developers.......2005-05-26
The chapter in this book on Web Parts is well explained and laid out with one huge fundamental flaw; the author can't decide whether he wants to illustrate examples with C# or VB.Net. He'll begin explaining a concept in C# and suddenly switch to VB and vice versa. Regardless of how proficient a programmer you are, this is awkward and confusing. Examples should be done in C#, VB, or both.
I understand the desire to cover both VB and C# in a single book, but this awkward attempt to do so effectively produces an inadequate implementation of each rather than a decent implementation of both.
Developers seeking to use this book to learn more about building Web Parts for Sharepoint should steer clear. It may be an inadequately documented field, but this book does not contribute positively towards it.
Sharepoint Webpart solutions for developers.......2005-05-08
"Microsoft Sharepoint: Building Office 2003 Solutions" by Scott Hiller is a introductory book on Sharepoint technology for developers
Starting 4 chapters are on Introducing Sharepoint Portal server, Installation and on content creation (nothing for developer there). Next 3 chapters provide good understanding of web part development. There is chapter on Integration with office 2003 Smart document stuff. Next Chapter discusses the programming to Sharepoint object model. Next chapter provides some information on the Sharepoint Portal server administration and at the end it discusses the 2 office solution Accelerators (for Proposals and for Recruiting).
This book contains good amount of sample code for the web parts development, and 2 Solution Accelerators chapters. Other chapters are of introductory knowledge on Sharepoint usage and administration. Depending on your need only few chapters might be useful. If you have knowledge of .NET development and want to understand web part development, web part chapters of this book along with the Microsoft Sharepoint SDK might be good place to start.
higher value added functionality.......2005-02-07
Microsoft SharePoint performs two things for Microsoft. Firstly, as explained by Hillier at length, it offers more value to Microsoft Office users. By enabling relatively easy ad hoc collaborations, that can access data stored in various Office documents and SQL Server's database. Where that access crucially includes the ability to search the data. And then, of course, to modify any such desired data, if you have the necessary permissions.
As Hillier discusses, SharePoint is another unifying glue over MS Office and SQL Server. The book is mostly aimed at programmers. Showing them how to make the WebParts using C# or VB under .NET. You can then use SharePoint to combine these parts into a simple application.
But SharePoint does something else for Microsoft, which the book doesn't seem to discuss. In Chapter 1, Hillier says it is the rare company that "can afford to jettison Microsoft Office and Windows operating system for a new infrastructure." Actually, it is not that rare. Linux and open source applications can increasingly offer much functionality that is equivalent and cheaper. In this context, SharePoint can be seen as an effort by Microsoft to incorporate higher valued abilities in Office, as a further lock-in.
Also, the searching described in the book should remind some of you of increasing competition in the search space. Google offers a search appliance for a corporate network. SharePoint gives that appliance competition.
Not bad for a beginner SPS book.......2004-09-20
Here ares ome of the bugs i had encountered with this book
Missing hardware configuration on chapter 2 to start the 1.excersises in the book
2.Some steps on installing and running web parts past security poorly stated.
3.At time there was no data on the web page to demonstrate web part capabilities and other SPS features
4. Documents do not move on chapter 8
5. Cannot get testing Secure Access to work on chapter 10
6. Could not get the accelerartors to work on chapter 11
This book is a very good introduction to SPS and the reader does learn alot on the subject. However some of the interesting features do not work from the book due to poor description or bad writeup. however the author was very thorough in his coverage.
