Wilbur H. “Ping” Ferry (1910-1995) was a self-styled “town crank,” an influential and iconoclastic figure who seemingly knew everyone worth knowing in the mid-twentieth century.
Businessman, thinker, activist, government advisor, and philanthropist, Ping’s career was as varied as his pronouncements. He taught John F. Kennedy at Choate, advised Eddie Rickenbacker at Eastern Airlines, worked a craps table in Havana, reported for several New Hampshire newspapers, and handled public relations for Sidney Hillman and his CIO/PAC. After World War II, he joined a public relations firm where he worked closely with Henry Ford II and John D. Rockefeller. He helped Ford establish his foundation, and with Robert Hutchins set up the Fund for the Republic, which later became the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions in Santa Barbara, California.
From his post as Vice President of the Center, Ping harangued the nation about the evils of technology, environmental degradation, racial inequality, educational deficiencies, and the threat of nuclear war. He gained national fame when he attacked America’s last and most sacred cow, J. Edgar Hoover (“our official spy-swatter . . . in these persistent reports about espionage and sabotage, is he delicately telling us that he isn’t up to the job, that Red spies are running loose despite his best efforts?”). He also publicly resigned from the Democratic Party in protest against President Lyndon Johnson’s Vietnam policy, and promoted televised executions as the best way of combating capital punishment. Ping gave away millions of dollars to minorities and those who suffered from government’s intolerance. He fought for world-wide disarmament by supporting with friendship and money such luminaries as E. P. Thompson, the great English social historian and founder of European Nuclear Disarmament.
The book also reveals that Ping had a quieter, softer side. He treasured his friends, who were to be found across the globe, played the piano, formed a close relationship with the Trappist monk Thomas Merton, and assisted many struggling artists. He attracted followers who admired his independence and forthrightness, people who wished to be more like him. In Victor Navasky’s words, Ping’s ultimate importance was “the impossible example he set for the rest of us.”

Swee 'Pea.......2005-02-25
This is simply my favorite book ever. I have read approximately 100 sports books and no single book ever made me feel as the authors (Valenti and NYC high school coach Ron Naclerio) were so close to and affected by the actions of their subject. Daniels has been labled as one of the greatest high school basketball players ever and his legend is probably even larger. He came from a broken home and became a victim of drug abuse at such an early age that his career never amounted to anything close to what it should have been. He did eventually play in the NBA only after years of drugs and a critically wounding gunshot robbed him of the potential he had when he was young. I met him in a bar at the New Jersey shore (close to where he and his family now live) on a chance one night years after I read this and was still simply awed by him as a result of this book. If you are a sports fan, please read this.

Sad dramatic story of fallen legend.......1999-10-07
Great book about could-have-been basketball legend Lloyd Daniels. A great inside look of how the glory of basketball corrupts youth. Inspirational because of Lloyd Daniels' limited success in the NBA and CBA. I loved this book because of its rags to seemingly riches to rags story about the Swee'Pea Lloyd Daniels.

Basic info on Hoffman.......2003-02-05
This biography is not as much a biography as a review of interviews made to Hoffman and reviews of Hoffman's movies (too bad there isn't one single word from critic-guru Pauline Kael). In fact, I didn't see much research here, the author never gets in one single day in Dustin's life with phrases such as "in 1967 he made this play and this movie and got these reviews". (And this book ends in 1984, with 'Tootsie'.) Certainly, it must be difficult to get into Hoffman's life, friends and relatives but this book doesn't seem to have tried that at all. The resolution of the pictures is like a xerox copy (this book is a reprint).

Welcome to College........2003-11-14
Welcome to College my friend! How do I know you are in college? Because public K-12 education would never spend $90.00 per textbook. Private K-12 education would have administrators smart enough not to buy this book.
Yes, only in college can you learn this lesson. It's the fine art of college text book ripoffs. Buy it used. Sell it as soon as humanly possible, preferably before the class ends. "Editions" might as well be called "annuities." If you get caught between texbooks, either edition or title, you will just have blown $90 of your $300 college catalog predicted textbook budget.
This book is a forced purchase. I can't believe anyone in their right mind would choose to read this or would gleam value from its contents. This textbook is the brainchild of very stupid people under the delusion that they're smart. Yep, I resent the purchase. Yep, MgGraw-Hill was kiss my heiny.
If you really want a review of the contents (what's wrong with you?) then okay. It's a muddled self-proclaimed series of definitions. Apparently leisure, recreation, and play do not have anything in common at all. But rather they form a overlapping set group of yellow, blue and green circles. Confused? You should be. You're not a Professor Emeritus at the San Diego Community College District.
Abstract concepts that are clear as mud await you. If you are reading this, your name is either Kathleen Cordes or Himli something or other OR you don't have a choice and was just curious to know hom much you were bent over the barrel.

Adobe GoLive CS Classroom in a Book Revised.......2007-09-27
This is a great product that Adobe makes. I did the the whole book and learned a lot about web design. I'm now trying to make my own web site and I have many of the basics, though, I have to admit, still a lot of questions. I don't know what they could have done more so that I could design now with the greatest of ease, unless they would know exactly the type of web site that I want to design. And of course there are as many types of web sites as there are types of houses. But again, they gave me a lot of the basics in a very hands-on way that I could drill them, so I recommend the CIB series. I learned a lot about InDesign a few years ago with the CIB for that, for example, too. It's an economic, effective way to learn the basics.

An EXCELLENT read! - I highly recommend this after you learn a little about HTML. I was very committed to reading the entire book and went fullsail with building multiple websites since its completion.
Excellent Resource for Beginners .......2006-08-14
I am a technician by trade, but I am very new to the web building world. The last time I attempted to build a web page was when c-tags were in style. When I bought this book I knew almost nothing about GoLive CS. I have now completed most of the lessons in the book and I will say I was hard-pressed to find any errors. Trust me, I know error proned books (i.e. CCNA). This book is perfect for a beginner and will lead one by the hand. The lesson material on the CD uses good examples. The book is far from exhaustive, but it will get one started. There is a whole lot in GoLive that is left to explore. After reading the book I have been able to build a good sized web site with many pages, and with many different styles.
Essential tool to get started with GoLive.......2006-05-10
One thing GoLive is not and that is intuitive. This book starts you off with a hands on approach and after a time it starts to make sense. I used it methodically and did not find any mistakes mentioned in the other reviews - it helps to use one's head and guess where one overlooked, or mis-understood an instruction as the program is very fiddly. Highly recommended.

***This review is for the Revised Edition*** (FYI, I use the Mac version) Firstly, I have completed the whole book and have NOT found it to filled with errors. There are a couple of areas (specifically I think it was 3) where I had to do a double take and make sure I was following the directions as I was supposed to. Some confusion comes in because the names of some of the palattes are very similar to the names of the work screens, so you need to pay attention if the directions say "Click on the navigation palatte" or "Click on the navigation screen." At a couple points in the tutorial, it got a bit confusing, however it was nothing I could not figure out with some careful reading. It is not a complete reference on GoLive, as I feel I just scratched the surface with the text so far. I would recomemend this book to others basically because there is no other text to learn from. However I would like a more complete exhaustive text that goes deeper into GoLive. One thing I do fault the book for is not having a brief chapter of summary actions like "To fix orphaned files...do the following.."and then list them. There is no summary page or chapter on commands, icons and what they mean. I find myself knowing what I want to do, however I have to look it up to find out detailed instructions on how to do it. Like I said, overall, not a bad book, especially because there isn't anything else out there.
***Update*** I downloaded the free 30 day version of Dreamweaver 8 from the Adobe website to try it for 30 days. I also bought the book "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual" to take it for a test drive. I figured all I would be out of would be the cost of the book. I have only completed 3 chapters and I already like this program much better, and the text is excellent when compared with the text for GoLive. My advice: if you have to use GoLive, use this book and the GoLive Tips book and make the best of your situation. If you have a choice of which progam to use, download Dreamweaver 8 free for 30 days and get "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual" and take it for a test drive. I have already decided to dump GoLive and go with Dreamweaver. Don't make it hard on yourself by sticking with GoLive if you don't have to. Mind you, I am not saying GoLive is a bad program, I am saying documentation is poor, and you will be further ahead by going with Dreamweaver and all the available texts you have access to.
