Book Description
Losing a friend can be as painful and as agonizing as a divorce or the end of a love affair, yet it is rarely written about or even discussed. THE FRIEND WHO GOT AWAY is the first book to address this near-universal experience, bringing together the brave, eloquent voices of writers like Francine Prose, Katie Roiphe, Dorothy Allison, Elizabeth Strout, Ann Hood, Diana Abu Jabar, Vivian Gornick, Helen Schulman, and many others. Some write of friends who have drifted away, others of sudden breakups that took them by surprise. Some even celebrate their liberation from unhealthy or destructive relationships. Yet at the heart of each story is the recognition of a loss that will never be forgotten.
From stories about friendships that dissolved when one person revealed a hidden self or moved into a different world, to tales of relationships sabotaged by competition, personal ambition, or careless indifference, THE FRIEND WHO GOT AWAY casts new light on the meaning and nature of women’s friendships. Katie Roiphe writes with regret about the period in her life when even close friends seemed expendable compared to men and sex. Mary Morris reveals how a loan led to the unraveling of a lifelong friendship. Vivian Gornick explores how intellectual differences eroded the bond between once inseparable companions. And two contributors, once best friends, tell both sides of the story that led to their painful breakup.
Written especially for this anthology and touched with humor, sadness, and sometimes anger, these extraordinary pieces simultaneously evoke the uniqueness of each situation and illuminate the universal emotions evoked by the loss of a friend.

Chicken Soup for the ex friend's soul.......2007-01-25
Eh, it was ok.
It's a great topic but I didn't like the way it was done. Even though some of the stories were gripping in their sadness or inevitability, I agree with the reviewer who found the stories largely elitist.
My principal complaint, though, is with the sameness of the writing. I felt like I was reading the same contributor again and again--checking the author bios, they are all professional writers, which assures a quality of narrative but also makes the stories strangely "of a kind." (In this way, the also-introspective "Chicken Soup" books are superior; no matter what the topic a variety of lifestyles--a variety of "voices"--is represented.) If somehow some teachers or pipefitters or cartoonists or singers or somebody other than introspective writers had contributed, it would have been a more interesting title.
Could not put this book down . . . !.......2007-01-04
The topic of the book's collection of essays was especially relevant and important to me personally, having had a few friendships break up over the years. I loved all of the various perspectives from each essay writer from their personal filter of the series of events and issues that contirbuted to the demise of a friendship. I loved the fact that the essays covered a wide range of issues between friends (death, marriage, divorce, money, distance, careers etc.) and representative of various life stages in women's lives (school-aged, teenagers, young adults, 20-something, 30-something and beyond). This book captures the emotionally charged, intense and often complicated relationships that women have with one another. A very worthwhile read for anyone who has been puzzled by a friendship gone awry for one reason or another. Really terrific book, well-written, well-organized and well-conceived.
The Crucible of Women's Friendships.......2006-12-19
This is a wonderful book that most readers will enjoy. I think the vignettes or more illustrative of the vagaries of women's friendships, than, say, a more academic analysis of love, jealousy, betrayal and hurt feelings among friends.
My one and only complaint is that I hope she does a follow up book that looks at the same issue, but one that also includes online "friendships." I think that the increased use of myspace, facebook, and other bbs and online forums also provides fodder for this genre.
Nurture Your Girlfriends or the Frienship Will Die.......2006-06-04
Sometimes we grow apart, or our values radically alter, or the common interests die, whatever the case there are those relationships that whither away but are not a cause of discomfort in sudden run-ins. The ones that are, are sad.
The best piece of advice: NEVER let a man ruin a real love with a beloved girlfriend. Boyfriends are a waste of time compared to a true blue friend.
the best collection out there at this time on women's friendships.......2006-04-22
The best collection of objectively written yet heartfelt stories written by intelligent people. It's about women's secret, unspeakable competitiveness and inability to be truthful and/or tactful enough to stay friends.
I was struck by how nuanced and complicated women's friendships are: helped me see my own failed friendships under the light of inevitability, blamelessness, and hopelessness.
Most of the essays deal head on with the ugliness of competition, and not in a Glamor magazine type of glib way, but in a helpful, analytical yet readable way.
Book Description
Every day in America, abortion providers and the women who need them are in danger. First published ten years ago, this collection of 25 powerful stories from contributors both famous and ordinary, privileged and poor, provides often harrowing insights into what happens when women are denied the right to choose. Testimonials from teenagers, college students, overloaded young mothers, and even a retired male Marine put a human face on one of this country’s most controversial issues and offer passionate arguments for access to legal and safe abortions.
Customer Reviews:
Sad rationalization.......2003-02-19
Its a sad rationalization of a series of horrible decisions. The fact the one writer says that having a child would have been far worse than the pain she experienced having an abortion is saddening. How could she not value another's life. It is a story of selfishness. Those should take a deeper look at what they are doing in supporting the death of a baby. ...
God bless.
great stories from those who've experienced abortion..........2002-09-04
This book is a great read for background information and history on the women's right movement and abortion becoming legal in the United States. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Themes about sadness and regret are very common and validating. It also discusses abortion from the man's perspective- one lost his mom! GOOOOOOOOOOOD book!
Coat Hanger Days.......2001-03-30
This is a terrific collection of first-person narratives by women who had illegal abortions in the days before Roe V Wade. Some are famous -- Whoopi Goldberg, Linda Ellerbee, Jill Clayburgh, Ursula K LeGuin, Grace Paley. Others are not. But all testify to the fear, desperation and danger that surround abortion when it is forced underground. Harsh religion, sexual ignorance, unsympathetic families, and vanishing boyfriends are recurring themes. Each woman tells her own story--vividly and naturally, without slogans or jargon. Coat hangers and death by sepsis or hemorrhage are not pro-choice propaganda -- they were realities not so long ago. I hope everyone who supports abortion rights will give this book to a friend who thinks maybe restricting abortion would be a good idea. A definite must for your local public library.
Stories to Justify Killing of the Unborn.......2001-03-05
Well written book, and some very sad stories indeed, but all to justify to killing of their unborn children. I once my self was pro-choice, but after learning the facts that abortion really does kill another human being I could no longer appeal to these kind of bad argruments, sad though they may be. None of these stories could justify the killing of the unborn. It's sad to see that today we have a "class" of people the "unborn" being considered as trash, blobs of tissue, a product, instead ofwhat they really are "Precious unborn human persons"

Book Description
Wild cards are low probability, high impact events that catch most people by surprise. Weve always dealt with surprises, but Petersen explains why, now, the magnitude of the surprises is greater than ever, and illustrates how certain trends in computer science; social behavior; life expectancy; national and global security; space expeditions; and consciousness research--just to name a few--might converge....or collide.
Customer Reviews:
Compelling, Sensible, Easily Understandable.......2007-09-02
I read and started to use this book well before I started doing Amazon reviews, and was reminded of this today when I started updating my brainstorming briefing.
I know John personally and consider one of the most balanced observers of the future, and especially gifted at casting a wide net to find weak signals, and then using analysis to make sense of disparate noises.
I strongly recommend this book and his more recent updated edition, Out of the Blue: How to Anticipate Big Future Surprises
Blue about Out of the Blue.......1998-07-09
This book is difficult reading, but this is NOT due to challenging material or scholarly finessing. There is no liquid ingredient in this dry mix. The author's style has a barreness, lacking any fluidity, profundity or depth. . . a bit like sitting through a company meeting on inventory and distribution (or some other banal task), complete with charts and graphs. Perhaps the author finds legitimacy and comfort in the data charade, but don't be fooled. There are no intuitive leaps or original creative thoughts in these pages that might weave the complex interrelationships of current events and trends into a potently abstract future. The author's attempts to instruct his readers in the fine points of interpreting and preparing for "wild card" events is far from wild and is, rather, highly predictable. Instead, his extrapolations are exercises in linear thinking that any avid reader of popular science and technology magazines could surmise. The book's style and layout seems choppy and disjointed with the annoying visual interruption of multiple "boxes" on the pages which serve neither to emphasize important material in the main text or elaborate on same. They appear to be more like attention grabbing "sound bites" that contrive to superficially keep the reader engaged. While this style may be appropriate for slideshow presentations, it is gimmicky in the context of a book. The author seems to lack the confidence in the text's ability to engage and stimulate, which is not unfounded. The author provides a number of uninspired wild card scenarios but lacks any comprehensive and cohesive vision of their impact. This faceless and disembodied grouping of scenarios leaves the chore of putting this jigsaw puzzle together to the reader without a picture guide. How does it all fit together? Life is wild, and we'll never tame it. This is what makes life interesting. Our own creativity is born in our responsiveness and connection to this natural, unpredic! table and multidimensional realm. And THAT's all she wrote.
An extraordinary view into a number of worlds........1998-02-18
An extraordinary view into a number of worlds. Clearly, Petersen is one of the best-informed Futurists in the world. He is a true "out of the box thinker." He reports on the most important break throughs in technology, business, science and space---and the critical breakdowns in human and environmental health; and in social, political and economic conditions. Most importantly, Petersen offers one of the most well-informed reports on the emerging realities that will redefine every aspect of our careers and personal lives---sooner than we might think.

Book Description
From exploits on the field, to machinations in the front office, to data on the cities where they play, the Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball Clubs presents the team history of each of the MLB teams. Intelligent, in-depth essays provide social and economic histories of each club that go beyond the recounting of team glories or failures year by year. Team origins, annual campaigns, and players and managers all figure into the story, but so do owners, financiers, politicians, neighborhoods and fans. Teams are also looked at as business enterprises, with special attention given to labor issues like the reserve clause and free agency, as well as stadium construction and financing. Social and political issues are covered as well, including racism and integration, ethnic makeup of fans and players, gambling, liquor sales, and Sunday play. National events, like World War I, World War II, the Great Depression and the Cold War, and their impact on the national pastime, are also brought into the picture where they are relevant. Media coverage and broadcasting rights are discussed, as is the great influence the flood of media money has had on the sport. As America's sport, baseball reflects not just our ideas and beliefs about competition, it also reflects our national and regional identities. Readers will be able to find useful information about:
Important players, managers, owners
Community relations/charity work
Business and labor issues (television income, free agency)
Race relations
Baseball/Sports economics (including stadium construction, team relocations)
Teams in local and national culture (Fenway Park, Wrigley Field as local icons, Yankees as a national team) Every essay is signed, and concludes with suggested readings and a bibliography. The work is illustrated, has a comprehensive bibliography, and is thoroughly indexed.

Book Description
Baseball has brought us great players, great writers, and some really rotten calls. Baseball: An Encyclopedia of Popular Culture looks at American society through the prism of its favorite pastimes, discussing not only the game but also such issues as race relations, writing, drug abuse, entertainment, gambling, movies, and the change from rural to urban society.
Book Description
Would Garry Kasparov have beaten Bobby Fischer? Was Capablanca stronger than Morphy? Many chess authors have speculated about such questions, but this book, based on a sophisticated computer analysis undertaken at the University of British Columbia, provides the definitive answer
Customer Reviews:
Where's Alekhine?.......2005-10-31
Chess is a mind game, nothing more, nothing less. But it's the toughest kind of mind game and the object of this book is just that, to find the greatest of the masters of chess. I've always been a fan of illustrated books, frankly they make reading more interesting. In the case of `Warriors of the Mind', this was all the more necessary. The authors have tried to explain the gaming scheme and the psyche of individual players as well as how far they are from their 'time', so to speak.
First published in 1989, most of this material is already dated and hence misses some of the great legends of today. This isn't a book that'll help your game spectacularly; it's just a book which tries to 'reason'. What I found particularly hard to deal with were the mathematical forumalas, which were anything but easy to understand and I don't think anyone other than a mathematician would be able to fully grasp them. Overall, the authors have tried to compare the technique, the strength of the opposition and of course the experience of the players. Other than that, it also gives you brief career sketches of the champions and discuses the type of game they played. Interesting to read, it handles the 'who's the best player' question in the most comprehensive and definitive way possible. Alekhine's absence was disappointing though, considering he was the only world champion to have actually died in possession of his title!
"Who's the best?".......2003-10-17
First you should know I am a Life-Master of chess. You should also know I have written extensively on the subject of "The World's Greatest Players," ... many different state chess magazines have printed my thoughts on this subject. (I also have several pages on my web site that cover this.)
For example, some of the factors to be considered are:
#1.) Strength of opposition, (Who did he play? Were they any good?); #2.) The aging factor, (These authors call this the "era effect." In chess, a player's strength decreases dramatically after about age 45.); #3.) Career span, (How long did a player play, and for how long was he really good?). Some of the factors these authors do NOT address is the accumulation of general theory, (Could a player of 1850 beaten a player of 1950?); player effectiveness, and how much a player contributed to the overall advancement of the science/theory of the game. They also touch upon, but do not really delve into, one of the most effective measuring tools one could use for this task: i.e., how far was this player ahead of the rest of his generation of players ... especially at their peak?
This book is a re-print of a book that first came out I 1989; much of the material in here is already rather dated. (This means that players like Anand and Kramnik are NOT even mentioned, as they had yet to make their mark on the chess world.)
The object of this book is to find the greatest {CHESS} player who ever lived. The authors say that they are embarking on the on this mission with zeal, yet they are going to be more objective than anyone has ever attempted to be. Yet it seems to me that the authors started out with a preconceived notion of who the best player was, and then constructed an elaborate artifice to justify their conclusions. (In one of their early lists, Andrei Sokolov comes out as number FOUR. The authors then attempt to "massage" their data in an effort to make this unbelievable blooper go away!) The authors also start out with a fairly small number of players, (64); statistically this - in and of itself - is a tremendous blunder! (Then they map out every game every played between this pool of contestants.)
I was considered an adept at math ... and I once had a student who eventually received his Doctorate in Math as a Statistician. But even so, some of the formulas here, (pages # 320-321); are beyond the ken of virtually anyone but a trained mathematician.
Their final results will also generate controversy; some of their lists are almost laughable in their conclusions. For example: Many EXPERTS, GM's and authors strongly feel that Alekhine was one of the greatest players who ever lived. Yet these two authors do NOT rank him in their top 25!!
This book will not make you a better player, so don't buy it for that reason. Buy this book because it is perhaps the ONLY book to even TRY and deal with this topic in a really intelligent manner. It is also a great "FUN" book. You get a game or two for each player discussed and they also give a brief sketch of the careers of each of the players covered. A rousing read which is stimulating AND thought-provoking!!

'Like setting Rocky Marciano against Mike Tyson. Unlike boxing, however, chess posesses a mass of statistics that can be treated as raw material for comparisons.' Nigel Hawkes, The Observer.

'The book undoubtedly will stir controversy among chess fans and statisticians. Even if you skip the maths tables it is still a rattling good read.' Grandmaster Larry Evans, Syndicated Column, USA.

'Who is the greatest player of all time? Warriors of the Mind proposes to answer that question in as definitive way as possible.' GEORGE BOTTERILL, THE NEW STATESMAN.
Book Description
If you like to tweak, disassemble, re-create, and invent cool new uses for technology, you'll love MAKE our new quarterly publication for the inquisitive do-it-yourselfer. Every issue is packed with projects to help you make the most of all the technology in your life. Everything from home entertainment systems, to laptops, to a host of PDAs is fair game. MAKE focuses on cool things you can do to make technology work the way you want it to. The publication is inspired by our bestselling Hacks series books but with a twist. MAKE is a mook (rhymes with book). We ve combined the excitement, unexpectedness, and visual appeal of a magazine with the permanence and in-depth instructiveness of a how-to book. Whether you're a geek or hacker who delights in creating new uses for technology, or a Saturday afternoon tinkerer who loves to get his hands dirty, you'll keep every issue of MAKE on your bookshelf for years to come. Our premier issue, available in February 2005, includes 220 pages packed with tips and tricks, including:
- how to create a $14 stabilizer for your video camera with readily available household items

Make! .......2007-08-24
I have a handful of Make: copies, and plan on fleshing out the rest of the back catalog. I'm considering a subscription. Even if you don't have a workshop, these "magazines" (more like little books, actually) are great for stimulating your mind and reminding you that making things isn't just something that other people do.
Too much fun stuff for one book.......2006-03-15
I stumbled across Make: in a retail store and bought a copy. Nearly fifteen bucks for a "magazine" is pretty spendy for me, but minimal advertising and lots of interesting articles and reviews hooked me. I've since subscribed, but when I found out Amazon had back issues at discounted prices, I had to pick up the issues I had missed. In addition to gaining the confidence to try to repair some things I previously considered "disposable", I learned about a drain-cleaning tool that more than paid for all of the issues I've purchased in the money it saved me on a call to a drain-cleaning service.
From super low-tech incredibly hi-tech, there is something to interest most tinkerers here.
Exc eeds expectation.......2006-03-12
Ok, I was expecting good things from this magazine, but what I got exceeded my expectations. The first thing that I noticed was the production quality of the publication. The pages are thick and satin like and the art is consistent and first rate. Most importantly, the content is exceptional. Typically with these sorts of books, there are many interesting tidbits, but no practical applications. Make: differs in that every time I turn the page there is something wonderful that begs to be created.
I brought my first Make: to work and almost didn't get it back. I showed it to five people and every single one of them subsequently bought various editions from Amazon. I figured it would be a good idea to subscribe to the magazine, but when I went to retrieve the subscription cards there were none left. My buddies stole them all for themselves!
Make: has fired my imagination and has me in projects for years to come. Good job O'Reilly!
Ads? What ads?.......2006-01-22
Not sure what magazine Brandnew was reading when he complained "70% of contents are sponsored, and ads appear everywhere", but it wasn't this one. Make has VERY few ads. I just quickly thumbed through this issue (Vol. 1), and was only able to find eleven pages that have ads on them, including inside the covers and the backcover. It's possible that I missed one or two others, but there's no way you'd ever say they were "everywhere". The ads that do appear are all relavent to the target audience. Like most magazines, they do have product reviews, but they're contained in about 10 pages, and again are all relevant to the reader.
Later issues do have more ads then the early ones, but even then, they are all clustered at the beginning and end of the magazine. In issue 4 (the latest) there are probably 15 pages of ads, and none appear in the main content area, between page 75 and 184.
Ok, now that I'm done debunking the nasty rumors spread by others, what do I think of the magazine itself? I love it. The projects are interesting, fun and informative. It's also one of the rare publications that isn't scared to publish ideas that could hurt someone. They publish all of the appropriate warnings, but they trust that you're smart enough to take responsibility for your own actions. Most of the projects are completely safe, but if you're buying this for your kids, I'd recommend that you check out each issue with them & decide on which projects they can do by themselves & which are better to do together.
Of course not every project will appeal to every reader, but they'll likely give you ideas that can be applied to other projects that do interest you. It might not appeal to everyone, but if it sounds interesting, you'll most likely love it.
I've been looking for this!.......2005-10-27
I stay on the lookout for the "Boys" guides, you know, those old books dealing with science and technology (a hundred years old, perhaps, but still quite educational). I've looked into a few more modern magazines, such as Popular Mechanics (good for what it is), Wired (mostly a culture thing, I guess), and 2600 (fine, if my goal was to electronically knock over a Target store or something).
This is what I was after: a 'book' series dealing with hacking together hardware, making stuff work, and making stuff work better.
Now my 'to do' list has grown substantially, with a bunch of things I really hadn't thought of doing!
