Forbes Great Minds made a lasting impression on me. It was great to listens to these fascinating people in an informal interview. To pick up one new idea and one new lesson is worth the time spent, but too generate the detailed information they provided is extraordinary.

Perhaps you saw one or more of the programs in the PBS series. If so, then you will especially want to have a copy of the interviews on which that excellent series was based. If you saw none of the programs, here is the "companion" to them. The executives interviewed:

Fred Smith (Founder and CEO, Federal Express Corporation)
Peter Lynch (Former Manager, Fidelity Magellan Fund)
Pleasant Rowland (Founder and President, Pleasant Company)
Paul Volcker (Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve System)
Gretchen Morgenson has done a skillful job of assembling and editing the material produced by the five interviews. What I am especially pleased about is that the tone of each is informal but the responses to questions are crisp and insightful. The questions asked are probably the same ones you would ask if you could sit down with each of the five, one-on-one. For example, here is a brief excerpt from the Smith interview:
Q: Can that view or perspective [ie one which differs from traditional wisdom] be learned or can it be taught? Or is this something you think you are born with?
A: I think there's a lot of luck and I think it's probably intuitive that's mostly there to begin with. I do think that you can teach people to think in those [non-traditional] channels, however. One of my favorite terms is "Kaleidoscope Thinking," which I believe was coined by the former editor of the Harvard Business Review, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, and what she was trying to get across with that phrase is of you have a business problem and you turn the kaleidoscope a it over, then sometimes perhaps you'll see it in a slightly different form than you had seen it traditionally....That I think you can learn. And whether you're interested in doing it, that's something else.
"Kaleidoscope Thinking" helped Fred Smith to conceive of what eventually became Federal Express. The same thinking process also helped him and his associates to make that concept a reality.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants the next best thing to having a one-on-one conversation with each of five of the greatest business thinkers in the late-20th century. You may also wish to obtain copies of the video and/or audio cassettes.

Long-time radio announcers Denny Matthews and Fred White of the Kansas City Royals were baseball's version of The Odd Couple, with their differences often shining through their broadcasts. The phrase "long-time" may not be fair, or accurate, to describe the tenure for these voices. The 1998 season marked the 25th year Matthews and White were on the air together, making them, at that time, the longest-running broadcast crew in the American League. In the National League, they were surpassed only by Jack Buck and Mike Shannon (and only by two years) of the St. Louis Cardinals. (Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds also celebrated their 25th anniversary together in 1998.)
If a calculator was put to task, it could be said that Matthews and White did approximately 4,050 games together; or, based on an average three hour game in the American League (although lately they've been more like three-and-a-half hours), the two logged-in about 12,150 hours of play-by-play together. Can you imagine working with same person, day-in and day-out in a small office for 25 years? Not many of us can. The 1998 season also marked their final season together, as White's handshake contract was not renewed after the season. The news of White's dismissal sent shock waves to Royals' fans, and nearly incited a listener riot.
To many, the news came as a shock because in a business that tends to breed egos the size of the Truman Sports Complex, White and Matthews have everything but egos. Baseball radio announcers are a special brand of broadcasters. In this day and age of cable television, it takes a unique person to become a good radio broadcaster, let alone become a great one. To many Royals' fans, Denny and Fred (as they were known to their listeners) are great. For a quarter-century, Denny Matthews and Fred White formed a special bond with their listeners, partly dictated by tenure together and the length of an average American League game, but also by the pair's laid-back, smooth approach to each broadcast.

do you remember sitting on the stoop after you got finished mowing the lawn and listening to the last few innings of a baseball game with 2 great announcers calling the game? this is a great book about two of the best. it will bring back great memories of Royals baseball and is interesting to anyone who is a fan.

A short introduction to Kenji Mizoguchi's cinematic masterpiece Sansho Dayu, one of the very greatest films ever made. Contains two essays offering two different perspectives and evaluations. Carole Cavanaugh compares and contrasts the film with its literary sources and lauds Mizoguchi's version as a profoundly beautiful vision of indissoluble family ties and a trenchant critique of the Confucian militarism implicit in some earlier versions of the story. Dudley Andrew examines the socio-political aspects of the film's creation & international reception and criticizes what he perceives as Mizoguchi's bleak existentialist vision, quietism, and "inhuman humanism". Each essay contains much useful information and many interesting insights. The prose is clear but a bit stiff and academic.

Few books address the legendary age of 1960s off-off Broadway theater. Fortunately, Stephen Bottoms fills that gap with Playing Underground---the first comprehensive history of the roots of off-off Broadway.
This is a theater whose legacy is still felt today: it was the launching pad for many leading contemporary theater artists, including Sam Shepard, Maria Irene Fornes, and others, and it was a pivotal influence on improv comedy and shows like Saturday Night Live.

A Time When a new Theatrical Genre Was Born.......2007-03-30
The Off-Off-Broadway theatre scene in New York City is one of the strong reasons for living in New York City, and perhaps their best times were when they were getting started in the 1960's. This was a time when social changes were afoot in our country. The pill had freed up female sexuality, for most of the decade the Vietnam war was underway, and everything came together in New York. No one knows when it really began, but it came alive at the Cafe Cino. And while the story of Joe Cino and his cafe is told in a chapter, you may be interested in the bigger treatment given in 'Return to the Cafe Cino.'
This book then goes on to describe the growth of the Off-Off-Broadway scene after Cino, new theaters, stronger and breaking into categories, but retaining still the idea of non-commercial, far out theater, in small venues.
In Cino days, actors who were members of the union frequently performed using another name. Now there is a special category of contract and there are more actors working OOB than on the Bib B itself.

Bottoms gives shape to the marginal field of "basement theaters, cafe theaters, hole-in-the-wall theaters, and theaters thriving on rough edges, raw passion, and a fierce sense of immediacy and 'liveness' of the stage event itself and of the audience" which sprang up in the 1960s along with the experimentation in other parts of the culture as well. A Professor in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Television Studies at the U. of Glascow, Bottoms sees the connection between this "off-off-Broadway" theater of the tumultuous and quixotic 1960s and today's popular entertainment. The raucousness of rock concerts, the brazenness of Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," the provocative live performances, and rap lyrics all had precursors in the "illegitimate" theater of the 60s. Bottom's engaging work is both historical and critical. He cites the artistic and cultural sources while also bringing in the wider social milieu of the time. General themes and developments share space with activities and individuals connected with particular theaters and troupes. "Playing Underground" is a benchmark work of thorough research which goes into the social and political agendas of this theater scene while at the same time imparting its unconventional, often deliberately provocative and obscene, and in the long run, influential performance style.

This book offers an entertaining way to test your skills and train yourself with 300 positions taken from actual games.
I loved this book because you don't need to have a chessboard at hand, you just try to solve the problems looking at the position diagram on the book. This alone is a good training for your brain, helping to develop the capacity to think ahead and visualize combinations in your head, after all when one is in an actual game you have to be able to analyze positions and visualize moves and combinations.
I truly believe anyone can benefit from exercising his analytical and visualization abilities.

Absolute garbage!.......2006-07-27
This is by far the worst 'strategy guide' I have ever encountered. It was out of date before the game was even released, with much of its information seemingly taken from the game's beta testing. It has at the most 10 pages worth of accurate information, and you'll have to figure out which parts of the book are accurate for yourself.
The rest is either out of date, wrong, or can be EASILY found for free on the internet by anyone with even the slightest bit of competence in using a search engine (if you can't figure out a search engine, I doubt you could even install Guild Wars, so the guide won't help you anyway). Most of the things that aren't out of date are HORRIBLE or TOTALLY INADEQUATE strategies that will cause hours of endless frustration.
You would be much better off just playing the game and figuring things out for yourself than using this guide. Unless you plan on using it to fuel a fire, there is no reason to own this book. Don't waste your money.

Is very helpful, but there is a lot missing, and it's hard to find what you're looking for in the book as opposed to the game... The maps are very helpful when you can find the one that applys to the game... I'd like to see an updated version of this book, I would definitely purchase it!!!

....Excellent guide to characters and basic descriptions of main quests, however many of the maps are not labled with the appropriate refference points. Overall I, found this book helpful and would recommend to anyone playing this game. I hope that a better proof read book will be produced for the Factions Campain.

Lost, But Found in Factions.......2006-11-10
I found the game, Factions a little confusing to follow. What quest would lead me to the end of the game or how many towns were left in the campaign.I bought Prima game guide, from the first page, which is the map, I began to understand what towns I missed and what quest I needed to finish the game. Very informative guide, great addition for the guild wars fan.

I have NEVER been very impressed with the PRIMA guides and this is just another crummy example of what a terrible job they do, particularly with Guild Wars. I once bought one of their e-book versions and their stupid piracy protection was so hokey I ended up getting my money back. The content is very superficial. While they do a reasonable job of listing all of the skills and mobs in the game, if your hoping for some actual helpful hints on how to beat that tough mission (especially if your going at with just henchies), this guide is of zero use. There is practically no real mission specific information or hints. You would be much better off going to guildwiki or guildwars.gameamp.com or tentonhammer or just googling for what your after. You'll get much better information then this guide will give you.

The Prima guide for Guild Wars Factions was the worst game guide book I've ever seen Prima produce. Don't waste your money -- in fact, don't even waste your time reading it if someone gives you a copy.
