Complex as he is colorful, Phil Jackson has led an improbable basketball life, marching to the tune of his own iconoclastic drummer and managing to win at every level along the way. He doesn't think like an average jock, nor does he approach his game like one: just ask Michael Jordan or Shaquille O'Neal, who've played better for him than for anyone else. Roland Lazenby couldn't have come up with a better title for his compelling exploration of what makes Jackson tick and how he evolved into one of the most successful and driven coaches in NBA history; for Jackson, the joy of his game is every bit as cerebral and psychological as it is physical. His aim, he says, is to help his players "strengthen the muscle of their minds."
Of course, Jackson--part shaman, part shrink, part mentor, part guide--has found some fascinating ways to strengthen his own, including LSD, meditation, Zen, Native American culture, William James's Varieties of Religious Experience, and the Grateful Dead. They are as much a part of Jackson's evolving core as pounding the offensive boards with the Knicks and warring with Bulls' management. If some of it seems contradictory, it is those very contradictions--more than the seven championship rings as a coach and two as a player--that make Jackson so interesting; they have helped him reshape and redefine the job. "Somehow," writes Lazenby, "Jackson has managed the very difficult feat of blending fun and discipline and spiritual exploration for his teams, sort of like combining a trip to the dentist with a carnival ride." No other coach has learned to walk that delicate balance so gracefully. But then, balance is Jackson's operating metaphor: keeping himself--and his teams--in balance while keeping opponents off theirs.
In Mindgames, Lazenby puts together a smart, solidly reported, and balanced portrait of a Zen master with a dark, driven side. He respects Jackson enough to not whitewash him. After all, innovators have a way of stepping on toes, and in basketball, the shoes, like the personalities, tend to be oversized. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Mindgames follows the journey of Phil Jackson to the top of basketball’s coaching hierarchy, a rise that took him from obscurity in the Continental Basketball Association to nine championship rings in the NBA. Along the way he turned multimillionaire players on to meditation, transformed the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls from a one-man show to a five-man team of domination, and after battling with Bulls management, ended one dynasty to start another on the West Coast.
Sportswriter Roland Lazenby, author of the bestselling Blood on the Horns, reveals the fascinating story of Jackson's life, from his years with the New York Knicks under the legendary Red Holzman to his remarkable nine championships coaching first the Chicago Bulls and then the Los Angeles Lakers.
In Mindgames Lazenby compellingly portrays a man with a unique determination to control the competitive environment he inhabits. A clear picture of the Jackson mystique emerges: philosopher, teacher, manipulator, counselor, psychologist, shaman, champion, master of mind games.

Long Strange Journey; but Mundane Occasionally.......2002-08-21
The book definitely discusses in detail, Phil Jackson's zen/indian philiosophies and techniues, and his propensity to use such things to create champions.
Other interesting areas include his background coaching in a turbulent, out of control south American league, where drunken fights in the stands were the norm and bullets weren't restricted to the stands.
Discussions of his idiosyncracies as a player, and the mentoring he received as a coach, especially when learning/incorporating the triangle offense, are also definitely worth a read.
The books discussions of his behind-the-scenes experience with management, in team meetings, and on the tour bus reveal him as an expert in "playing politics." Despite its somewhat negative connotation, his "Mind Games" (also the book's title) appear ro have contributed to his tremendous professional success (NBA Championship rings).
However, his somewhat antagonisitic actions towards team ownership and media have left him with a somewhat questionable reputation. The book discusses this in detail. For example, without provocation, he once kicked a reporter off the team bus, leaving her stranded, and regularly exiled the team's owner from meetings). The book explains the rationale for these actions. Jackson sees "team solidarity" as a crucial aspect of "building the team spirit" and allowing it to grow.
In addition, the book is fairly current and details his brief, ongoing career with the Lakers, revealing some surprisingly esoteric insights about the team and his role in it.
His unorthodox, yet wildly successful NBA coaching career make this an interesting and thoughtful read. However, this review ranks the book four stars out of five, simply because the book's meticulously long discussions seasons' worth of quasi-important matches on the hardwood floor becomes a bit redundant and irrelevant(playoff/championship games excluded).
But if you're a basketball fan, a Lakers' fan, a Bulls' fan, or are simply intrigued by the man and his phenomenally successful, yet wholistically unorthodox approach to life, interpersonal relations, and success, this book comes highly recommended.

Nice read. Full of inside stuff........2002-05-16
This is an excellent read about a different drummer. I'm a Lakers fan, but Bulls fans will like it just as much.
Title is misleading, but a good quick read nonetheless.......2002-01-03
I have always been intrigued by the work of the "Zenmaster," which is why I first decided to read this book. I had heard about Jackson's work in mending the rift between Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant and had wondered how he did it when others could not. The first 100 pages of this book delve into the mind of this phenomenal coach, but the rest of the book goes on to name his achievements. Yes, it was interesting to learn a little more about Michael Jordan, Pippen, Grant and Rodman but those guys were not the reason I picked up the book. If I wanted to learn about those players, I would have read "The Jordan Rules." Bottom line, I would rather pick up "Sacred Hoops" or "Maverick", which were actually written by Jackson himself.
History of the Bulls..... Not Jackson.......2001-08-03
This is an easy read... But you have to hash through a lot of common knowledge about the Bulls to get any interesting tidbits about Jackson. Sacred Hoops gives you much more perspective into Jackson than this book does. The author teases the reader with an opening story about how Jackson smokes two cigarettes and drinks a beer before he talked to the Bulls after a game... A great bit of informaion, but many true Bulls fans could have picked this up the the local papers or sports talk shows... The author gets most of his inside information from Tex Schram, Johnny Bach, and Skip Schaefer. The majority of the book is a general chronicle of the Bulls 8 year 6 title run offering few insights on Jackson. If you followed the Bulls, read Sacred Hoops, the only 'fresh' information comes from the last two chapters about Jackson's year off and some information about Jackson's first year with the Lakers. It reads quick, but do not expect learn any new in depth information about Jackson.
Interesting, But Nothing That Will Blow Your Mind.......2001-03-22
As someone who has read "Sacred Hoops" three times and follows Phil Jackson's coaching career very closely, I was very excited to see this on the shelf at my local bookstore. This was a good book. I breezed through it. I thought it was very well written, and it did have some interesting anecdotes. In my opionion, probably the most interesting part of the book wasn't even about Coach Jackson, but rather about the people who have worked with him. The short biopics of the Chicago Jerrys, Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, and others were very interesting to me - and very fair (which is tough these days when you read anything about Krause).
On the other end of the stick, I would agree that the book did seem a tad superficial as far as Jackson is concerned. It promises to give you insight into one of the most complex figures in contemporary sports, but really does not do that. It only touches superifically on his connection to Buddhism, meditation, and his relationships outside of basketball. Indeed, the end of Jackson's second marriage - certainly one of the more important influences in his life - is entirely covered in one short paragraph of a few sentences.
All in all, this was a decent book. However, I won't be reading it again.

Mindgame is a puzzle-box of a play. A thriller that actually manages to thrill, and a very dark comedy that twists and spirals towards a completely unexpected ending. This is one play where seeing isn't quite believing and reading the text is the only way to uncover all the clues.

Chinese National Cinema (National Cinemas Series.)
ASIN: 9622093957 |
Book Description
Ruan Ling-yu: The Goddess of Shanghai tells the story of one of the greatest Chinese movie stars of the silent era, from her humble origins to her tragic death at the height of her career. Included with the book is a DVD of her most famous film "The Goddess."
Shanghai between the two world wars was a city of intrigue, political change, corruption, vice, social disparities, and creativity. It was here that Chinese movie-making reached its peak. Feeding off the decay of an ancient civilization, and inspired by the frenzy to build a new one, the Shanghai filmmakers captured a crucial transition in Chinese history, and established the basic tones, themes, and techniques of the Chinese film industry.
The individual whose films best reflected the turbulent times of the period was Ruan Ling-yu. Her life and work symbolized the social currents of Shanghai and the tragedy of China during its long downfall. This book provides context by describing the political and social conditions of life in Shanghai during this period. It covers Ruan's production company Lianhua and her directors as well as her fellow performers, and contains photographs from Ruan's most creative films. It also includes a complete filmography, a bibliography, a list of film archives that have her films, information about where to obtain film copies and pertinent websites.

Book Description
Mourning Diana revisits the remarkable series of public events that occurred across the world following the tragic death of Princess Diana, from the spontaneous public gatherings right after the news broke to the official funeral ceremonies. The book takes the Diana events as a case study for the examination of a number of key questions in contemporary culture and within contemporary cultural and performance studies.
The editors have brought together a distinguished group of international contributors whom:
*view the Diana events as a case study of wider cultural processes and questions
*discuss a range of interdisciplinary concerns informed by cultural studies, performance studies, gender, sexuality, and sociology
*provide a substantive theory of the power relations of mourning, social drama, iconicity and cultural narration
*explore how the boundaries of the mainstream seemed to shift in the wake of Diana events, and how the questions of institutional privilege, social dispossession and cultural power which Diana embodied were brought to the forefront in the global reaction to her death
In a context in which considerable dispute has taken place over the meanings and seriousness of the Diana events, the publication of this serious, reflective, and sober critique speaks to and re-addresses this controversy.
Contributors: Jean Duruz, Susanne Greenhalgh, Valerie Hey, Carol Johnson, Richard Johnson, Adrian Kear, Joe Kelleher, Mica Nava, Arvind Rajagopal, William J. Spurlin, Deborah Lynn Steinberg, Diana Taylor, Jatinder Verma, Valerie Walkerdine.

A thoughtful analysis of the global reaction to Dianas death.......2000-06-30
Any fan of Diana's will know why we mourned (and still mourn) her passing. This book however is fascinating for it's analysis of those mourners who said things like "I never knew how much Diana meant to me until she died" and "I cried more at her death than at my own father's". Why did Diana's death have such an enormous impact on a global scale, even for people who claimed not to have liked her during her lifetime? It was more than just pity at the way a young life had been taken too soon. This book is an excellent examination of the huge significance of the gobal mourning and grief that was displayed in 1997.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent companion.......2007-08-28
I found the book to be an excellent companion to the All-in-One by Shon Harris. Great for review of knowledge, or as a springboard into the material covered by the CBK.
A must for initial review.......2007-07-11
This book is a must for initial review. It covers all 10 areas of what needs to be studied in a clear and easy to understand way. It is not, however, detail enough to get you pass the test. You need something more detailed and more sample test questions.
Read This Book First.......2006-12-20
CISSP -- Certified Information Systems Security Professional
After reading this book you can't be considered a Dummy any more. Nor, however, do I think you'll be ready to call yourself a Professional.
The real strength of this book is that is is so simple, so well written, so complete in its subject coverage that giving it a quick read will give you the overall view of where you want to be when you are ready to call yourself a Professional. This book is also quite inexpensive when compared with some of the other exam preparation guides, and especially when compared to some of the classes offered either in person or on CD.
The book is organized about like you would expect with a separate chapter on each of the ten domains that are covered on the exam. There are a number of other useful security certifications such as those put out by Check Point, Cisco and others. He covers each of these to the point of at least letting you know what they are, i.e. the Check Point certifications cover the use of the Check Point Firewall products. The book is supplied with a CD that includes additional sample testing and other materials.
Recommendation: Read this book first for an overall view, then study one of the harder books.
A good first read, but you risk a false sense of security.......2006-03-05
I just recieved word last week I passed my CISSP exam, and I used this book among others to study for it. Let me give you a little background: I've been in IT for 10 years, starting as phone support, and moved on to desktop support, LAN administration, Exchange administrator, and eventually became my company's ISSO, then moved on to become an Information Assurance (Security) Engineer on one of our larger programs. Consequently, I had real world experience in many of the domains already.
Despite this, I think if I had only read this book, I would have failed the test. It is an excellent starter, since you can sit down and read it cover to cover in a day (plenty of white space, large font etc.) and you will get a good outline of the ten domains. But it just doesn't go into enough detail to keep you from getting tripped up on the test. A Section that is particularly lacking is cryptography. I don't think a single question on the test would have been answered from the knowlege I gained in that section.
The CD-Rom practice test is also too easy. I finished the book, took the 260 question test immediately afterwards, and scored ~95%. I then went online to the cccure.org website quizzer (which I highly recommend) and scored a 65% on their test!
Bottom line, if some one else has it, borrow it for your first read, it won't hurt and is a good way to get started, just don't stop there!
A book I highly reccomend is the CISSP prep guide by Krutz

The advanced questions at the end of each chapter are excellent. Remember, (ISC)2 jealously guards the actual test questions, and changes them all the time, so brain dumps are a waste in my humble opinion, but this book closely matches the conceptual depth and breadth you need to be confident of passing the exam.
Nothing is wrong with the book - just not enough.......2006-02-10
I sat for and passed the CISSP test in January 2006. I used the following resources to help in passing the CISSP:
Shon Harris - All-in-One - 3rd Edition - 30%
Official ISC Guide to the CISSP Exam - 15%
Kurtz - CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition - 10%
CISSP for Dummies - 5%
Cccure.org - 25%
Other resources - 15%
"CISSP for Dummies" by Miller is a decent tool at preparing for the exam. I had thought this book would be a great cram book (if possible for the CISSP), where the `core' topics would be documented. After referencing the book, I do not feel this to be true and stopped referring to the book after the first few chapters. I did not find any typos or editorial mistakes, so while I do not think the book is necessarily wrong, I just do not feel it is nearly enough to pass the CISSP. Everything found in "CISSP for Dummies" can be found in other books/material. Please see my other reviews to see how I rated other books that I used to help pass the CISSP.
I give this book 3 pings out of 5:
