                      Book Description

This is the story of a time, a place and a man, a story of a bygone era set in the North Woods of Wisconsin and Michigan. Roy Melvin came to Hurley Wisconsin in the summer of 1923 to play professional baseball and stayed for twenty-eight years to teach and coach. His innovative coaching concepts made him "a legend in his time." He epitomized the coaches of that era, teaching school during the day, and, whether fall, winter or spring, coaching after school hours. Truly, a Coach for All Seasons!

They are at work on a “little domestic comedy” for Columbia Studios to star Bob Cummings and Barbara Hale, a forgettable piece intended to offer a bit of escapist romance and humor to a country in the grip of the Cold War and the Korean Conflict. But thanks to their well-known 1940s leftist affiliations, Rouverol and Butler cannot fly under the radar of those larger events. To avoid prison sentences like those imposed in 1950 on their friends among the Hollywood Ten, they flee to Mexico rather than accept a subpoena from the House of Representatives Un-American Affairs Committee.

After taking refuge in Mexico City, Rouverol slowly re-creates new routines of family and professional life while her husband re-establishes himself as a screenwriter and director, most notably in collaboration on films with Luis Bunuel (in exile from Franco's Spain). Rouverol offers a compelling and candid eyewitness account that takes us into her life and thoughts during her dozen years of exile: simultaneously coping with the needs of four--then five, then six--growing and inquisitive children and keeping a watchful eye out for signs that the political winds in Mexico might shift against them as they did for a few others deported on often arbitrary charges.

Thanks to the fellowship of friends such as the Dalton Trumbos, and by means of pseudonymous writing, the Butler family survived. But living in exile takes its toll in ways large and small, and perhaps the greatest strain is on her husband, whose health is compromised and who eventually dies in 1968 at age fifty-three.

4 out of 5 stars Refugees from Repression.......2002-06-24

Jean Rouverol has written here a rather readable personal history of a very public assault on civil liberties (such as they were and are in the US) during the post-WWII Red Scare.

While it does not appear to have been her intention to delve into the politics of the period except as it pertained to women in general and her family (and the expatriate community in Mexico) in particular, especially during the blacklist, the inquiring reader is left wondering, for example, what happened to Rouverol's husband, screenwriter Hugo Butler, perhaps during their Mexican exile, to lead him to celebrate the display of Italian Communist Party banners in Rome even as he wishes that Party to lose the 1960 parliamentary election in Italy -- he, like his wife, having been a member of the Communist Party USA. But then, she tied up the loose ends of her family's Mexican experience somewhat hastily, leaving one to speculate as to whether Butler's political regression was a result of his overall mental deterioration -- a condition Rouverol noted. Nevertheless, her detailed account of their life in Mexico -- the focus of the book -- makes this a worthwhile record of survival during an intensely repressive time.

Jean Rouverol recreates those traumatic years with sensitivity, care and love. With a young family she and her husband not only managed to get away from, (rather than escape), the harrassment of anti-communism in Hollywood but also managed to create a new and productive live in Mexico. Her prose is crisp and very readable. Her sense of humour never fails. Her message is clear- if you believe in it you can do it! One of the few books I have read cover to cover in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting adolescent turmoil.......2001-01-08

I was a teenager at Hollywood High during these dark years. Struggling to understand the turmoil and politics that my family was living through. Each day I saw the pain my loving, idealistic father was enduring as more and more of his friends and coworkers became ensnared in the stupid net of fear and accusation that was spreading through his industry.

Jean's story of their quick decision to slip across the border with their children and their day to day challenges of providing a good education and rich family life as exiles makes great reading.

5 out of 5 stars An Unsparing Eye.......2000-12-20

Rouverol's clean prose and unsparing eye will draw readers into recollections of her family's life on the run and the work they scared up to support their nearly decade-long stint underground. Poignant and unapologetic, Rouverol's memoir juxtaposes the support they found south of the border with the unrelenting weight of living as fugitives. -- Publishers Weekly

                                  Book Description

Inventing Popular Culture is a lively and accessible history of the idea of popular culture by one of the leading experts in the field. Written from the critical perspective of cultural studies, the book traces the invention and reinvention of the concept of popular culture from the eighteenth-century "discovery " of folk culture to contemporary accounts of the cultural impact of globalization.Inventing Popular Culture argues that the idea of popular culture is an invention of intellectuals. The book does not present an analysis of particular texts and activities which have been, or could be defined as, popular culture; instead it explores the changing intellectual ways of constructing texts and activities as popular culture and how these intellectual discourses articulate questions of culture and power. Examining the relationship between the concept of popular culture and key issues in cultural analyses such as hegemony, postmodernism, identity, questions of value, consumerism, and everyday life, Inventing Popular Culture presents an engaging assessment of one of the most debated concepts of recent times.

Discworld Also picks up where GURPS Discworld left off and includes information on the more modern innovations that have occurred on the Disc in the books Pratchett has written since GURPS Discworld was published, such as the communications explosion and the opening of EcksEcksEcksEcks, and also offers more information and help to the game master and players. There are also new racial packages and character templates (including one for creating an Igor!).

It also includes 3 full-blown adventure scenarios and 3 adventure seeds. I've only run one of the adventures, Lost and Found, twice at conventions. This adventure has always run beautifully with both those familiar with the Disc (even those more familiar with it than I) and those who are not. Warning, though, the laughter that erupts from time to time at the table tends to distract those at the surrounding tables who opted (silly people that they are) to play something else!

This book is a joy to read, even if you're not planning on running a game in the Discworld setting, but is, of course, primarily intended for those interested in running a game in the setting. I would note that you really need to own GURPS Discworld (or the Discworld Roleplaying Game, as it's now being called) to use it.

The Discworld RPG is a great read even if you don't play GURPS. It's not bad even if you hate RPGs. The book is bursting with source material and backgrounds - it's not uncommon for personality descriptions to take a full column. If you're a gamer, it's nice to have the actual writeups. If you're not a gamer, the art and small storylines through the book are still entertaining. Of particular interest to me was the magic section - not so much for how it's used in the game but for the Disc's philosophy of how it works. Also, without this book, I never would have known that all native-born Ankh-Morporkians are born with Disease Resistance. And a shiv...

and absolutely blows me away with their Discworld supplement. before i read the Gurps books, i had never even heard of (let alone read) the Discworld book series or their author, Terry Prachett. now, of course, i am in love with the Disc. SJGames had disappointed me before with their attempts to adapt things for GURPS (the World of Darkness adaptations, in particular), but i could have read Gurps: Discworld, ignorign the rules, and still have laughed my ass off, marvelling at the imagination of Prachett and the beauty with which they condensed a huge (14 book) novel series into about 200 pages of humour, drama, adventure, and yes, stats. this is, of course, not to mention the absolutely GORGEOUS art littered about the insides. i don't know where they found Bill Kidby, but i hope they paid him enough to keep him interested in doing more work for Steve Jackson. basically, if oyu want a good sourcebook for the Discworld, well...world, if you want a book full of fabulous (and hilarious) fantasy art, or even if you want another GURPS book, make this it.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Game Manual.......2007-10-03

I bought this book for my son and he really enjoyed reading it becuase he was really into the game he had. It's a good manual if your kids play the game.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A good guide.......2007-01-18

The only real problem with the guide is the Pokedex in the back does not give enough information.

5 out of 5 stars As With Most Reviews, This is the Best Guide.......2006-12-23

Man, this is an awesome guide. I just got it in November and I already am at the Victory Road, about to enter the Pokemon League! Some reviews says it tells lies, and skips around the world of Hoenn; it doesn't! Some people even say that it skips Trainer imformation; but that's because Trainer's Pokemon are random. And for the "skipping around" part, just use the Quick Walkthrough to be guided and then head to the events of Hoenn in "Maps of Hoenn"! Some reviewers say that the guide calls Rock types Earth types, but that's usual. The guide even contains a Pokedex section, a List of Moves and a list of items! Here are the good and bad details about the guide (although it isn't that bad.)

                                    - The Good,
                                    - Nice walkthrough that connects to the Quick Walkthrough.
                                    - Thorough Pokedex, containing every Pokemon.
                                    - Nice charts for moves, and items.
                                    - Strategies for all Sub Quests and Pokemon Contests.
                                    - Good strategies for gym leaders, rivals and proteges, a.k.a. Wally.
                                    - Nice maps showing every building.
                                    - Locations of all Pokemon
                                    - The Bad,
                                    - Doesn't include Secret Bases.
                                    - On the battle with Archie in the Seafloor Cavern, he doesn't have a Golbat, he has a Crobat.

                                    - And the Ugly(I'm just kidding!)

Anyway, buy this guide; it's well worth it!

My daughter love the whole Pokemon genre, and especially enjoys the GameBoy Pokemon games. She has poured through this book many times already and just loved it. I highly recommend it.

This book is good for a quick walkthrough reference. It's simple to use and does its job well. If you need help with Ruby or Sapphire, I'd recommend picking this up!
