Book Description
Harvey Reginald MacMillan (1885-1976) is one of the most significant figures in Canadian corporate history. Born into extreme poverty in rural Ontario, MacMillan continued his education after high school and went on to study at Yale. Despite serious setbacks, including a bout with tuberculosis, MacMillan persevered, and in 1912 became the first chief forester in BC. He distinguished himself at once by selling BC lumber abroad in quantities that would have a lasting impact on the province's economy. By 1919 he had entered the private sector, establishing the first locally owned lumber export company in BC. That company grew to become MacMillan Bloedel, one of the most powerful forestry corporations in the world.
MacMillan also served his country in both World Wars and gave away millions of dollars during the last two decades of his life. For more than half a century, his speeches and arguments on public policy exerted an enormous influence on Canada's business and political leaders, although he often broke ranks with his colleagues to call for long-term resource management policies that were far ahead of their time.
H.R. was a prominent and influential man, always forthcoming on matters of principle. But he was also very reserved, private and complicated. Drushka's portrait of him, compiled over years of reading through public record and working closely with MacMillan's family and business associates, is a respectful but clear-eyed look at the real H.R.: the ardent conservationist who was also a ruthless business tycoon; the strait-laced businessman who had a lifelong friendship with his eccentric cousin, Mazo de la Roche; the shy, retiring gentleman who was also described as an "elemental force of nature."

Book Description
Documentary film dates back to the last decades of the nineteenth century and has been practiced since then in every region of the world. Varying in style, technique, editing, story-telling, narration, and intent, it is a medium that records the cross-section of human experience, from monumental conflict to simple lives lived day to day. It documents the events, pressures, and institutions of modern society, records traditional cultural practices, cultural changes, and captures the natural and animal world in all their complexity. Diverse in form and subject matter, documentary film can have many missions as well, at times created to inform, intrigue, teach, enlighten, convert, outrage, accuse, and also to serve as perfect propaganda.
With over 800 articles from scholars around the world, the Encyclopedia of the Documentary Film is a fully international reference work on the history of the documentary film from the Lumière brothers' Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory (1885) to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 (2004). All over the world documentary films have provided engaging, provocative, and skilled representations of life and this Encyclopedia provides a resource that critically analyzes that history in all its aspects. Not only does this Encyclopedia examine individual films and the careers of individual film makers, it also provides overview articles of national and regional documentary film history. It explains concepts and themes in the study of documentary film, the techniques used in making films, and the institutions that support their production, appreciation, and preservation. With over 200 film stills, this resource provides the decisive entry point into the history of an art form.
The Encyclopedia of the Documentary Film:
* Discusses individual films and filmmakers including little-known filmmakers from countries such as India, Bosnia, China and others
* Examines the documentary filmmaking traditions within nations and regions, or within historical periods in places such as Iran, Brazil, Portugal, and Japan
* Explores themes, issues, and representations in documentary film including human rights, modernism, homosexuality, and World War I, as well as types of documentary film such as newsreels and educational films
* Elaborates on production companies, organizations, festivals, and institutions such as the American Film Institute, Ceylon Tea Propaganda Board, Hot Docs (Toronto), and the World Union of Documentary
* Describes styles, techniques, and technical issues such as animation, computer imaging, editing techniques, IMAX, music, and spoken commentary
The Encyclopedia of the Documentary Film is the first work of its kind to provide much-needed support to this increasingly important area of study. Bringing together all aspects of documentary film, this accessible three volume set is an essential and comprehensive resource for scholars, students, and the interested general reader.

The Cadillac of canned meat food products finally gets its due with Spam: A Biography. The book traces the meat's story from its distant Hormel ancestry through its history-changing 1937 birth, right up to the present day. Along the way we discover that its ingredients are not nearly so revolting as one might have been lead to think (merely pork shoulder, ham, salt, sugar, and delicious sodium nitrite) and that Spam received its pithy name from actor and friend of the Hormel family, Kenneth Daigneau. But this is no rosy-hued love letter to luncheon meats. Wyman tackles the tough issues of Hormel's labor problems during the 1980s and the visceral hatred many World War II GIs developed for Spam after finding it in meals for days on end. (Wyman also notes alternative wartime Spam uses, including skin conditioner, gun lubricant, and thickly-sliced playing cards.) In an invaluable service, readers are reassured as to the benign nature of the disturbing gelatin that surrounds Spam, and taught how to tell which batch they're eating by deciphering the markings on their cans. The author also tracks the history of Spam advertising and descends into the terrifying maelstrom of obsessive Spam fans. Of course, no book on Spam would be complete without recipes, and Wyman includes some truly chilling examples, including "SPAMtastic Mincemeat Truffles," "Fruit Cocktail-SPAM Buffet Party Loaf," and the absolutely ungodly "Lobster Thermidor aux Crevettes with a Mornay Sauce Garnished with Truffle Pâté, Brandy, and a Fried Egg on Top and Spam." --Ali Davis
Book Description
Over sixty years ago, when meat was bought from a butcher, Jay Hormel's idea for pork in a can was nothing short of revolutionary. How in the world (and why in the world) did he do it? In nine highly engaging and entertaining chapters, complete with over 200 illustrations and photos, author and Spam-fan Carolyn Wyman traces the unbelievable success story of this one-of-a-kind, all-American, all-pork product, including: Spam's place in history, its role during World War II, and how Spam saved the Russian army from starvation, the making (yes, the ingredients) and the selling of Spam, from 1937 to today, spamming the Globe: From Zimbabwe to Anguilla, stories of Spam overseas, the infamous Monty Python skit and Spam's other starring roles and cameos in television, movies, cartoons, and music, delectable recipes like Spam Fritters, Spamtastic Mincemeat Truffles, and the award-winning Spam Cheesecake, Cyber Spam: The best of Spam on the Internet, including poetry from the Spam Haiku Archive. A fascinating portrait of an icon in a can, Spam: A Biography will delight everyone from the culinarily curious and connoisseurs of kitsch to netheads and veterans-and of course, Spam's true fans: the millions of people who eat America's "Miracle Meat" for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. SPAM-tistics: (1)Spam is sold in over 45 countries around the world. (2)Over 100 million cans are consumed by 60 million Americans each year, averaging 2.8 cans per second (3)The Spam can is part of the Smithsonian Institution's permanent collection (4)Over 5 billion cans of Spam have been sold since 1937. (5)Hawaiians are the highest per capita Spam eaters-averaging 4 cans/year per person-followed closely by Alaska, Arkansas, Texas, and Alabama (6)Hormel-sponsored Best of Spam Recipe competitions are held each year at more than 75 state and regional fairs (7)Over 20,000 people attend the Spam Jam in Spamtown, USA, aka Austin, Minnesota, Hormel's headquarters.

An Ode to Spam.......2007-02-10
Spam is a luncheon loaf loved by millions and despised by just as many. It's also a food staple that is a verified piece of Americana. I've never been a huge fan of spam neither have I been one of its detractors. After visiting the Spam Museum in Austin, Minnesota I decided to learn a little more about this infamous concoction of pork and bought and read SPAM: A BIOGRAPHY Beginning with the origins of the Hormel food company and the eventual creation of Spam and continuing into the end of the twentieth century, SPAM: A BIOGRAPHY chronicles the life and times of America's "miracle meat". It's surprising how much history one famous product has. In addition to a chronology of Spam and its parent company, SPAM: A BIOGRAPHY also examines Spam's impact upon culture, both in America and abroad; from Monty Python to the Russian front in WWII to Hawaiian Spam huts, it's all examined here. Spread throughout the book are also a variety of recipes for creating Spam dishes, such as Spam cheesecake, Spam Spargot, and Spam bread.
After reading SPAM: A BIOGRAPHY I'm still not really a fan of Spam, but I do have a better appreciation for the luncheon loaf. I'm no longer ashamed to admit that I kind of like the taste of Spam, but I still wouldn't want to eat it everyday. In reading the book, I also learned a lot of quirky trivia such as the connection between Hormel's Spam, Monty Python, and the naming of email junk mail as spam. Recommended for people who both like to read and are Spam fans. Trivia buffs might also enjoy it.
Carolyn Wyman Serves Up Sentiment, Porklore-- And Moreý.......2000-05-05
In this marvelously apropos sequel to "I'm A Spam Fan"-- her wonderfully readable round-up of household brand names-- Carolyn Wyman cooks up a campy collation of fun facts and festive factoids that delightfully delineates the enduring mystique of America's favorite mystery meat. We Love It!
A Spam-tastic addition to a food library!.......1999-08-21
SPAM luncheon meat has been good "eats" for over 60 years and this book nicely reviews its place in our culinary history. For a book full of both old and new ways to fix SPAM, a fan will also need Linda Egger's SPAM, The Cookbook.
Not (quite) as silly as you'd think........1999-06-28
Hidden beneath the barrage of silly spamaphenelia lies a story about the development of one of the most well known brands in America, and the world. This book offers interesting insight into one of the longest continually sold products in America.
Book Description
Covers Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Decimals, Integers, & More!
Students sharpen important math skills as they work their way through mazes, cross-number puzzles, riddle searches, and mini-mysteries on these one-of-a-kind practice pages. Includes key middle school math topics!
Book Description
Numbers, cards, coins, and shapes: with these, and a few mathematical principles, you'll turn into a magician! Just gather a few very ordinary, easy-to-find items (paper, pens, a calculator, dice, pennies, scissors), practice your patter a little, step in front of an audience--friends, family, maybe even your teachers at school--and prepare to astound them. Guess the number someone will choose; try some math telepathy; make mobius strips out of paper; and move "from one end to another"--a routine that uses a stack of cards for a very unique effect. Do an "incomplete prediction," a trick that seems as if it's going wrong...until you produce a surprise ending. Every one is easy to master--but no one else has to know that!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent combo of magic and mathematics!.......2004-03-31
This was the first book by this author that I bought, and I've picked up every title. They make great gifts for the kids you know, and the tricks are also pretty cool (I enjoy them for myself, too). This book is perfect for 9-12 year=olds, and combines magic tricks with basic math skills. Highly recommended!

very good book to have fun.......2001-07-21
This book is upto my expecations. There are very good math puzzles, both educational and entertaining.
Good problems for fourth and fifth graders.......2001-03-10
I recently purchased this book for my children in third and fourth grade and I am glad that I did. The puzzles really challenge them, although some are a bit more than they can handle. While the solutions are given in the book, they are not allowed to look at them until I am completely convinced that they will not get the answer. However, I do give them plenty of clues before that option is exercised.
Some of the problems are classics, for example selecting socks until you have a matching pair and drawing figures without lifting a pencil are problems that I did in grade school many years ago. My favorite problem in this book is the one that is illustrative of the growth of powers. It involves a million sugar cubes each a half inch in width. Making a cube out of them would create a cube approximately four feet wide, a rectangle would cover a tennis court but a stack would be higher than Everest. Since the first involves the cube root of a million and the second the square root, this demonstrates the significance of squares and cubes in a unique and educational way.
This book is an excellent source of mathematical puzzles for students at the level of fourth or fifth grade. While none of them is really new, they are well-suited for children of that age and all three of mine enjoy them greatly, although they do get frustrated.
Buy this book...it is cool :-).......2000-03-30
This book is full of cool math puzzles that you canlearnandamaze your friends!

Customer Reviews:
excellent.......2007-07-18
This book is incredible with much information and a bonus cd with extra brushes. After reading it I have signed up for Jermey's Creative Art Class in San Francisco. Leaving in a week and am very excited to get to do this in a class enviroment.
for beginers and..........2007-01-28
First of all, this is aimed at beginers and non-artists--that is, those who don't think of themselves as such. Fair enough, however, the approach for most of the book is to employ the technique of "painting over" a photograph in Painter. Not a bad technique, but just be warned that this isn't one of those book with amazing original compositions and step by stop guides on how they were created.
That said, I think this is a good place to get many of the basics of the program nailed down. And as with all complex graphics programs, the best way is to start out with the basics and then experiment. No one book can really even begin cover the range of techniques and tricks that are possible.
Recomended by a fellow traveler.......2007-01-19
While waiting for my connection to Michigan in Atlanta I stopped for a bite to eat. Chatting with the woman beside me I discovered that like my boyfriend's daughter, she was into machine embroidery and created patterns of her own. I mentioned that I was seeking a better program to use with my Wacom Intuos 3. She grinned and promptly pulled out her Gateway laptop and her own Wacom tablet and said - "Look at this!". It was my first sight of Corel Painter IX and I fell in love with it immediately. Before we parted she advised that I purchase Jeremy Sutton's Painter IX Creativity, which Amazon delivered this morning.
This book is clear, easy to follow and has excellent hands-on exercises. I like how Sutton works with beginner and pro alike. This book is exactly what I needed to enhance my Painter experience with my tablet.
If that traveler on her way to DC last Thanksgiving reads this - many thanks for recommending this excellent, hands-on tutorial.
Fantastic book!!!!!.......2007-01-10
From the experienced to the beginner this book is a most have to the digital artist. Mr. Sutton walks you through the chapters giving you his teachings and experience in an understandable way, practicing the lessons is fun and you will be amazed with the results. He is a good teacher and the book is very well organized.
The extras are worth the price of the book........2006-11-10
Excellent buy, The information is wonderful, the brushes are indespensible, I am very pleased.
