Book Description
1927. America's familiarity with stories of men of humble origin who have won success, is such as to foster an easy indifference. Individuals made the history of our country, individuals who led groups. This story is but a bright thread in the tapestry of the history of the Northwest. In one life generalization ceases and the particulars which make history personal and vivid are preeminent. Hence, biographies. Perhaps this story may be a stimulus, a signpost on the way all travel. If one little Canadian boy reads the message of the somber pines, others may read and run the race.

Book Description
Boudu, a tramp, attempts to commit suicide by throwing himself into the Seine. But he is rescued by Lestingois, a prosperous Parisian bookseller. Far from being grateful, Boudu abuses his host and seduces his wife. By the end of the film, however, Boudu is in danger of succumbing to the blandishments of bourgeois society, until in a final act of rebellion he again jumps into the water and drifts away.
Boudu Saved from Drowning (Boudu sauve des eaux), made in 1932, is less well known than Jean Renoir's later works but is equally a masterpiece. Aided by a prodigious performance from the legendary Michel Simon as Boudu, Renoir fashioned a profound parable about a social outcast who does not so much reject the rules of society as ignore them.
Besides laying bare the depth of meaning in the film, Richard Boston also traces Renoir's links to nineteenth-century French writers such as Zola and the paintings of the Impressionists, including Auguste Renoir, Jean Renoir's father. And in a fascinating study of Renoir's sources, he shows that in mistakenly dismissing the literary qualities of the original play by Rene Fauchois, previous critics have misjudged the true nature of Renoir's genius.

A modest study that might just change the way you watch film.......2001-11-06
Anyone interested in reading about film will be aware that, for the last 30 or so years, the area has been dominated by linguistic, historical, philosophical and cultural theories borrowed from other disciplines (e.g. structuralism, psychoanalysis etc.). while this process has been fruitful in moving the study of cinema away from simplistic literary-type interpretations to a proper appreciation of film's function and structure as a visual medium, and in liberating the viewer from the position of passive receiver of images to a thinking critic and organiser of them, few would deny that these theories and their jargon have become stale, rigid and knee-jerk, prohibiting thought, stifling new ways of looking at film.
In an article last year in the august British film magazine, 'Sight and Sound', Robert B. Ray, author of 'The Avant-Garde finds Andy Hardy' proposed a solution: using WG Sebald's essay-novel 'The Rings of Saturn' as a model, he suggests taking a 'walking tour' of a movie, taking images and details as starting points for histories and stories that might provide alternative ways of understanding film.
6 years previously, Richard Boston did just that in his BFI Classic monograph on Jean Renoir's 'Boudu saved from drowning', the comedy about a suicidal tramp saved by a good-natured bourgeois bookseller, who wreaks havoc on his benefactor's house, seducing both his wife and his mistress. by focusing on specific images - the river, the Left Bank on which the film largely takes place, a dog, a water-lily etc. - as well as the biographies of director Renoir, the amazing actor Simon and source-writer Rene Fauchois, he constructs an alternative history of 'Boudu', ranging from Greek philosophers Thales and Heraclitus to Shakespeare and Smollett and Shaw (brrrr) to the Impressionists and Zola (Auguste Renoir's son's own cultural legacy) to the Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy to Renoir's inheritors, including Bazin, Truffaut and Godard.
Boston calls this method sedimentology, looking for the traces of the tributaries that flowed into the great river 'Boudu'. Seemingly irrelevant and marginal stories and asides gradually cohere, brilliantly enriching our appreciation of an apparently simple film that has such a mythic resonance, correcting various bogus 'facts' (that Boudu was a proto-hippy; that the original play was cosily middle class) along the way. in effect he creates a suggestive psycho-history of the film in the way, say, Iain Sinclair, Peter Ackroyd or Patrick Keillor create psycho-geographies of London.
this method will infuriate some, and the lack of precise analysis of Renoir's actual film technique is a gaping hole (and some of Boston's interpretations seem myopically wrong, especially that of the horn-player picture as Boudu cuckolds a host who defined his waning sexual prowess in terms of Pan's pipes). But the medthod is so novel, the writing so intellectually curious, generous and engaging, and the book so entertaining and constantly surprising, that one can only salute it as a possible new step forward in the history of film writing.

Book Description
Jim Goad's brief career as an underground celebrity has been studded with controversy, from an obscenity trial over a much-reviled rape issue of his online magazine, to a White House shooting in which the perpetrator quoted Goad's writing, to a two-and-a-half-year stint in prison for assault. Shit Magnet is his manifesto, written while he was incarcerated. The book's theme is guilt how the act of blaming the enemy and slaying him is history's propulsive force. Preferring the role of shit magnet to pity sponge, he explores the disabling effects of guilt; uncovers sinister forces behind fashionable stances on race, gender, and criminal justice; and offers his own life as an example of how evil can be imprinted on a person from an early age. Goad is the former publisher of the legendary zine Answer Me! and the author of The Redneck Manifesto.

Uneven, But Brilliant in Spots.......2005-12-23
Having been a huge fan of "Answer Me" and "The REdneck Manifesto," I was surprised at first to discover that this book's general tone was not full-on rage and humor, but rather depression and despair. This must rank as one of the saddest books ever written. The sadness leaks through every page.
The book is very, very hard to read and almost impossible to enjoy. There are sections, like the chapter about the British youths who committed suicide, that rank as the best stuff Jim Goad has ever written.
Amid all the sadness, there are some eye-opening observations about social hypocrisy, especially the way that disputes between males and females are viewed.
I'm waiting for his Gigantic Sex book. It looks like he's learned to have fun since this last book.
THE THICK OF THE PLOT.......2005-12-14
Maniacal Medusa's review is that it's merely a version of the truth, not stone-cold fact. Some of it made me cringe, remembering how foully I used to behave. Other parts made me laugh out loud because they were so ridiculously skewed.
He doesn't even bring up the name I've gone by since 1991--proof right there he alters reality. I got a kick out of the false charges that I tried to kill crank dealers with a TEC-9, sent ANSWER Me! to his boss, traded bj's for smack, defecated in buckets, and orally stimulated an animal. The allegation that I told him I yearned for our relationship to be like "Misery" was another hilarious highlight. Accusing me of instigating each and every episode of domestic violence between us was also good.
I could go into further detail about specific fights, but you'd never believe the psycho wicked witch, so why bother? S**t Magnet is absolute verity, according to his fans. His lengthy retrospective couldn't possibly be fabricated to make him look like the much better person. My positive traits couldn't possibly have been downplayed to ensure I'd be viewed as the ultimate villain. In the minds of Goad's followers, S**t Magnet is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. But if that's the case, then why, might I ask, are you all still bewildered after reading his explanations for dating me? The excuses that he was terrified and depressed just don't justify why such a cool, insightful, tough guy kept pitying such a heaping pile of manure.
As for my friendship with Debbie after Jim went to prison, you bet I took care of her to try to redeem myself. For a year and a half, I drove her to doctor appointments, walked her dogs, cleaned her house, went grocery shopping, bought her weed, did everything I could to make up for having an affair with her husband while she was undergoing chemotherapy. At the same time, I also enjoyed her company. We had a lot of laughs and some great conversations (many of them had nothing to do with our ex, believe it or not). Regarding us using a Ouija Board together, Jim alleges I did it to toy with her mind. Actually, there were times I dreaded her taking out that damn Board 'cause I was getting so tired of it, but I always obliged because it gave her hope and put a smile on her face.
I was shocked by the insulting names hurled at Debbie in this autobiography. So she was a pessimistic nag who chose to be friends with me in the end--is that an understandable enough reason to write such hostile things while she's on her death bed?
I said to Goad when we first met that the best part of Redneck Manifesto was the phrase, "Ebony midget Spike Lee". I think my favorite line in S**t Magnet is--"And no one seems to see any hypocrisy or contradictions in all this."
Some of you might be interested in reading Debbie's personal account of her marital problems and coinciding battle with cancer. Her e-book can be found at americanbar.us/debbie
Portland's Other Literary Low Pressure Sodium Light.......2004-09-13
James Thaddeus Goad is not, in any sense, innocent. He (in reality) singlehandedly produced the "zine" that effectively put paid to the self-referential, pompous, and usually inept zine culture, basically by being so offensive to the status quo that it simply gave up in frustration. He's been a poster boy for dubious judgment, pleading guilty to an offense that anyone else would have went to trial for and won, and served nearly three years. And, yes, he did the deed: he beat the snot out of a female, a mistress who had hit, tormented, and threatened him so badly that he had had a protection order taken out against her (he did, however, continue to have wild sex with her on a daily basis). Goad says-and it's absolutely true-that had he not been a notorious, politically offensive writer, he would probably have received counseling and a small fine for the offense which could have put him away until he was old enough for Social Security.
All through the convoluted and often ugly story which this book tells-and quite competently-Goad realizes he's doing the wrong thing, for the wrong reasons, at the wrong time, and in the wrong place. Yet Goad-who is obviously intelligent, driven, physically fit, and obsessively introspective-seems doomed by his own compulsion to follow a path he realizes is going to cause him serious trouble. And, it does.
Goad winds up in the Oregon correctional system, one of the few in the country where whites are not a minority, and serves his time without any life-threatening incidents: boredom, frustration, and petty annoyances are the order of the day, not shankings and rape. But Goad clearly does not belong in prison, and it's clear-not just to Goad, but to any rational observer-that Goad is far more victim than perpetrator here.
This book, apparently written during Goad's incarceration, is a readable narrative and, for most of us, a reminder that free speech is never really free: alienate the wrong (or right) people enough and if they get the chance to nail you, they will.
''Oh Lord, Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood...''.......2004-08-04
Jim Goad's life and writing career has been one apocalyptic roller coaster ride to hell. This book wasn't intended as an autobiography, but it becomes one early on and Goad evinces such a magnetic personality that its really hard to put this book down. Goad's writing career began when he published the 'zine called Answer ME! with his then wife Debbie. The zines were an unprecedented exercise in misanthropy that lead to underground notoriety. They then put out the fourth edition, entitled 'The Rape Issue' which scared away all the ironic hipster poseurs and got Goad into trouble with the law. This book chronicles his life and the s*** Goad has had to deal with once the wheels of infamy were set into motion. What makes Goad so charismatic is his ability to admit all his flaws and his unflappable wit. The guy unapolagetically spills the beans on his life. His abusive, guilt-ridden upbringing, his damaged youth, his marriage to a dim Long Island yenta who eventually drove him into the arms of other women, and sent him into the direction of a psychotic fan named Ann. Here's a woman so deranged and manipulative and possessive that Goad had to fall for her, being a lover of damaged goods. The book is certainly compelling, though at times redundant, especially when Goad keeps returning, masochistically, into the arms of Anne, admittedly from a fear of being alone. Goad never really paints a pretty picture but neither does he absolve himself, also painting an ugly portrait of himself in the process (the guy was cheating on his wife, with Anne, while she slowly died from cancer.) The most intriguing part of the book is how Goad challenges long-accepted notions of proper conduct - don't provoke people by satirically challenging notions of women as sacred beings and their bodies as sacred temples; don't hit a woman no matter how many times she's provoked you or threatened your life; don't dare write something that might inspire deranged individuals to misinterpret your words and attack the White House with a shooting spree. Like his earlier book, The Redneck Manifesto, Goad once again puts together an impressive piece of work that provides us with a glimpse of one of America's leading agitators and pundit of politically 'unacceptable'' thought, manner and behaviour.
The Title Says It All.......2004-05-20
Great first book, The RM was great, but this is just the half-hearted ranting of an overrated crybaby. Obviously, Goad is a man with only one book in him, given underground credibility either b/c he spent time in prison for beating his wife or because he lives in Portland, sucking off the warm dung-squirting teat of Chuck Palahniuk.

provocative psychological study of chess .......2004-08-22
This is a psychological study of the game of chess, with lots of interesting info on chessmasters of the 20th century. In a way this book is actually anti-chess, arguing that obsession with the game demonstrates a number of psychological maladies: narcissism, repressed homosexuality, the oedipal complex. The author is decidedly a follower of Freud, and his take on the game and its champions will likely enrage most chess players. But I enjoy chess as much as nearly anyone, and much of what is here rings true to me. This is an unusual book which is definitely worth reading.

Good starter.......2007-08-23
This is a good starter if you are not familiar with the world of Wireless. It explains how radio waves work, how different objects can interfere with the radio wave, and how to setup your network. It explains the OSI model and it is written in an easy to read manner. I read the book and was able to pass the certification.
False advertising........2007-07-20
This "Official" study guide claims in the blue star in the upper right corner of the front cover "Complete Coverage of the Exam Objectives". In side the book, the LIMITED WARANTY states that the "study guide is believed to be reliable, BUT CANNOT BE GUARANTEED TO BE CORRECT OR COMPLETE". Is that double talk or what?
I am here to tell you folks that the latter is true, and not the former. Having taken the test, I can honestly tell you that there were certain topics, terms, and phrases mentioned in the test questions that were NOT FOUND anywhere in the entire book. The test's usage agreement prohibits me from mentioning here what those subjects were. Despite the false and misleading advertising on the front cover, this book is the most comprehensive book of the subject found between 2 covers that I am aware of (with the possible exception of the 4th edition which I have not read). That said, I feel that I need to warn you of the following things.
1. If you buy this book, be sure that you download the book's errata sheet from the CWNP web site and make the corrections in the book.
2. The test objectives discussed in the book differ somewhat from those shown on the CWNP web site. Those small differences can make a big difference on the test.
3. I found the chapters on network security, network architecture, organizations and standards, and spread spectrum technologies to be somewhat confusing, and incomplete in the manner the material was presented.
You will do well to supplement your studies of this book with other material, particularly the subjects mentioned previously.
Not a complete study guide for the PW0-100 exam.......2007-02-21
I liked this book but as the CWNA study guide it falls short of expectations. The PoE coverage was almost entirely lacking and there were many other areas that did not fully cover the exam question areas. I wrote CWNP and received a lame excuse as to why it was not complete and to disregard the claim printed on the cover that it provided "Complete coverage of the CWNA exam objectives". They said the exam has gone through considerable changes since the book's publication and thus does not match in many areas anymore. I suggested an on-line suppliment to cover the changes and they said that was not necessary, I should research the changes myself. As the exam study guide it deserves 2 stars, as a general guide to wireless networking it deserves at least 3 or 4 though obviously it is getting dated.
CWNA Certified Wireless Network Administrator Official Study Guide (Exam PW0-100), Third Edition (Planet3 Wireless).......2007-01-10
CWNA is a newish International Certification in ICT. I have been working with International Certification in ICT for a long time, and I have read many books.
This book cuts to the chase succinctly and very well. In a reasonably newish field (Wireless Networking), I have yet to find a publication as well organised as this one.
The book is useful for many things -- a reference, a text book or a study book. A great effort, and I hope there will be more to come
Only book you need to pass CWNA test.......2006-09-22
This is the one of the best technical books I've read. Clear and detailed explanations, easy to read, 'not dry' - it gives you what you need to pass CWNA and more. You will return to this book every now and then in need for good explanation of wireless foundation (RF math, surveying, security, standards...). When studying, I ALWAYS use Internet as an aid in preparing for exams, and I did this time, too. It helps to read another author's lines to deepen your knowledge, or just to find another examples of the subject. Don't get me wrong: this book really IS your only study guide, but it is worth to take few steps more to be sure you do well on the test (after all, it's your money). It is important to visit CWNP's web page at www.cwnp.com for current errata. I used this book as preparation for CWNA exam and passed it with over 90%. But don't think CWNA is easy: prepare well, pay attention to details (!), be sure you REALLY understand what your are reading, take your time to prepare, and good luck!
