In 1922, the man of eighty-four jumped out of bed eager for the day's work. He did not die of old age. When the last severe cold compelled him to stop going to his office a few weeks before his death, he was mentally alert and physically vigorous, and he was holding in his own hands the many threads of his vast business, religion, and public interests. He did not think that his work was finished. He was not ready to retire. That he was going to die never entered his head. A well-known businessman, Wanamaker started a men's clothing business with his brother-in-law, Nathan Brown, and within ten years it developed into the largest retail clothing store for men in the United States, which was later expanded into a department store. He also served at the Postmaster General during his long and prosperous life. These volumes tell the story of this fascinating man and the life he led.

Too broad, too unfocused.......2007-04-25

In the glut of noir books out there, there seems to be a race to include the most films under the Film Noir masthead. This book provides an impressive number of films but come on! There are westerns, horror films, adventure films and simple dramas. WAY too inclusive for any kind of true film fan. (and still oddly missing a few marginal noirs) Also, the author has a strange obsession with what TV shows the actors from films have also been in. In nearly every review he mentions some TV show that so-and-so also appeared in. That information is included while he leaves out such important elements to the noir style as who the cinematographer or composers are! A huge oversight. Plus the reviews are often plot spoilers. For how expensive this book is I was highly disappointed. I'd stay with Spencer Selby's 'Dark City' While you could argue that it needs an update to include some more films, it is a far better thumbnail guide to the noir catalog.

Film Noir Guide: 745 Films of the Classic Era, 1940-1959.......2005-02-26

I recently received this book and I'm having a great time reading and flipping through its many, generously illustrated pages. If you are a film noir fan, this a must-have book. The writing style is engaging and entertaining. If you are looking for a scholarly "serious" study of film noir, this book is probably not for you. But, if you are looking for information, to be entertained, and to increase your knowledge of the "dark city" genre, then you have hit the jackpot with this book. There are many tidbits of information to interest the hard-core "noir-head". In his several hundred reviews of films noir, the author includes funny quotes from the films and familiar faces from tv. The author lists some 750 films he classifies as noir. This book is a great starting point for those who may be exploring the noir genre for the first time, but it also will appeal to the fan who wants information written in a witty, excessible style. I'm hoping there will be another film book from this author!

A Delight for fans of noir.......2004-05-16

If you are a lover of film noir, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. It is chock full of wonderful comments,as well as a number of films you probably have never heard about elsewhere. Michael Keaney casts the widest possible net in compiling his compendium of over 700 noirs (ALL FROM THE CLASSIC ERA OF THE 1940S & 1950s), and while he himself admits many may not be true noirs, each and every one displays a genuine noir influence. Keaney writes in an approachable light and breezey style. He does not go in for deep analysis, but has a large number of wry, amusing and downright clever observations about most of these efforts. His ratings might annoy some (Hey, he gave a low rating to one of my all time favorite noirs, Bogie's DARK JOURNEY!) but then this is part of the fun of the book, seeing where you agree or disagree with his critiques. He provides an extensive bibliography as well as a fine breakdown in an appendix of classification of films according to type. One important note: Keaney limits himself to films he actually viewed, so a number of excellent noirs that are currently out of circulation are not included, such as I WOULDN'T BE IN YOUR SHOES, STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT and WITHOUT WARNING. Let's hope these rarities may turn up in the future. Then maybe Keaney can add them to his book in an update in five years or so. In the meantime, Keaney's book is a "must have" for anyone interested in film noir. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Much More than Movie Reviews.......2004-02-01

Mr. Keaney's Guide is much more than movie reviews. His Memorable Noir Moments alone are worth the price of the book. His insights into the actors and directors are fascinating. This a catalog to be used to explore the genre. I have found movies I was not aware of that are now on my must-see list. Another big plus is Mr. Keaney's thoroughly enjoyable writing style. This simply a fun read!

NOIR HEADS DELIGHT.......2004-01-14

Mr. Keaney has done a great service to us self-proclaimed "noir heads" with his comprehensive book "The Film Noir Guide" Unlike other books of the canon, it is truly a "guide" or rather an primer to the complete noir theme. Other authors, in fact all that I've read, have analyzed film noir to death. The Keaney book minimizes this frequently trodden path and instead provides an extensive filmography of noir with a refreshing look at many obscure and borderline noirs as well as all the old favorites. Most important, it explains a simple and inexpensive way to locate and own these films. This in itself will save a significant amount of money and countless hours trying to track down these movies (Hint: They're not at Blockbuster); and it certain justifies the cost of the book. (I only wish I had a reference book like this when I started collecting). Also impressive is the fact that he actually watched all of these movies, something other authors have neglected, often relying on third party sources.

An earlier reviewer argued over several of the inclusions (BLOOD ON THE MOON, i.e.), but he clearly is not very knowledgeable about film noir (Or relies only on select authors). There are western noirs (YELLOW SKY, STATION WEST) as well as costumer noirs (BLUEBEARD, HANGOVER SQUARE), horror noirs (The Val Lewton films) and serials noirs (The SHADOW series). Noir is not just defined by THE BIG SLEEP, DOUBLE INDEMNITY and TOUCH OF EVIL. It has a look, feel and tone that cuts across genres. Frankly limiting noir to only pulp detective films is not only wrong and arbitrary but deprives the noir fanatic of many rewarding dark films. Thankfully, Mr. Keaney has bypassed this pitfall and breathed new life into an often written about subject.

A sneaky smart book. Seduces readers (myself included) into not just chick lit but also the spiritual classics. One of the problems of "religion" today is that too many young people are allergic to it. Books like this are the antidote to those allergies.

Brilliant!.......2005-03-20

Like so many young women I know, I've struggled for years to maintain my own sense of spirituality in the face of outdated (and let's face it, often anti-feminine!) spiritual traditions. I grew up in a relatively religious household, but as I've gotten older, I've found that traditional religion offers practically no guidance for the kinds of personal and career struggles my girlfriends and I deal with on a daily basis. Whoever thought that a little pink book could fill such a huge gap?? A girlfriend of mine who read "Becoming a Goddess of Inner Poise" in her book group recommended it to me, and to my surprise, it's made a huge difference in my life. By looking at Chick Lit characters as spiritual role models for modern women (not nearly as crazy as it sounds), Donna Freitas is able to talk intelligently about everything from body-image issues to career choices to sex to going out with the girls for martinis in a way that is both spiritually validating and incredibly funny at the same time. In fact, this book was so easy to read, I'm honestly not sure what book the reviewers below were reading. (I've never read a dissertation, but if they were anywhere near this entertaining, my guess is that there'd be a lot more Ph.Ds!) My guess is that most women will see this book the way my girlfriends and I see it: as a welcome relief, a v. fun read, and a long-overdue look at the very real spiritual journeys women of our generation are taking every day.

Not Worth the Library's Shelf Space.......2005-03-11

Isn't it fishy that this book was reviewed by 3 people, each within 2 days of the other, posting nearly the same glowing "review" (5 stars of course) and not one of these 3 reviewers have voiced an opinion on any other book, at any other time before or after this book? How cheezy.

Like the one "real" reviewer, I also thought this book was textbookish and read more like a term paper for a community college class, only with about 80,000 too many words.

Reading Her Dissertation.......2005-02-23

Tried to read (not v.g.) book, but first had trouble getting beyond "Bridget" style (not v.g.) Read the four "rave" (v.g.) reviews here on Amazon. Tried twice more to read again. Humph.

Still, something bothering about (not v.g.) book. Seemed little more than simply dissection of Helen Fielding's (v.) successful (hurrah) book.

Finally (hurrah) realized problem: to read (not v.g.) book is to read author's dissertation, which am now convinced "book" is, as (humph) so clearly follows standard "How To Write Your Dissertation" guide-- Preparing the Proposal, Conducting the Research, Writing the Research Paper, Sharing the Research Outcomes with Others...all the way to whole qualitative preliminary study combined with quantitative main study for combined methodology.

Obviously, how-to "formulate important and relevant research question" was something along lines of "popularity of chick-lit from Bridget Jones to present day, and how effects 20-something women seeking poise and confidence" as related to spirituality or some such nonsense. Humph.

End result? Author finished up with her PhD by converting dissertation paper into book highlighting research, as PhD candidates do. (Not. v.g.)

At least not another paper on "Women in 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Bridget Jones's Diary.'" Might impress 20-somethings, but in opinion, not a v.g dissertation... er...book.

Every woman is a goddess.......2004-12-14

Donna Freitas discusses religion by embracing the taboo topics within this arena. She makes clear that to be spiritual and/or religious, an individual does not need to be ashamed of the very aspects that make us all human. For all 20 and 30 something women out there looking for a book that will explore the topics that you're too afraid to address in the same sentence as "God", Donna Freitas is the author for you. Not only are these topics explored, but you will leave this book feeling empowered, and know that you truly are your own goddess of inner poise.

I thought the guide was a wonderful help. Sometimes you just don't know what to do. The guide will help and give you explanation about the surrouding and the characters. And with the puzzles around. It's worthy having it, even if you don't need it. It's there, just in case you get stuck and can't get out.
