The Piano

Book Description
Jane Campion's The Piano is one of the most unusual love stories in the history of cinema. This volume examines the film from a variety of critical perspectives. In six essays, specially commissioned for this project, an international team of scholars examine topics such as the controversial representation of the Maori, the use of music in the film, the portrayal of the mother-daughter relationship, and the significance of the film in terms of international cinema, the culture of New Zealand, and the work of Jane Campion.
Customer Reviews:
simple and succinct...but watch the movie.......2005-11-12
i'm still undecided on whether or not i enjoyed the novel, doubtless the film is better than the book (something i don't say very often!) Many are familiar with the plot of the silent Ada and her daughter who arrive in New Zealand taking with them the enigmatic and magnetic piano. Her husband ends up swapping the piano for a plot of land and Ada is forced into giving its new owner (George) piano lessons. However he is content to just let her play...if he can do whatever he wants to her and perhaps she just might get back her piano.
It is an astounding, heart wrenching concept that Campion devours, bringing in a deeper emotional intensity as we finally delve into George's past, why Ada is strangely silent and her husband's incurable loneliness. It is a profound glimpse into the awakening of one Victorian woman's sexual awakening.
BUT...I have a few problems with it, firstly it is too succinct, sometimes a few descriptions and dalliances along the way are a welcome distraction to the sometimes oppressing thoughts that Campion evokes. Secondly it is frustrating that the all encompassing piano is mute throughout the novel, well in the sense that one only hears it through the mind's ear...which is why i woul recommend the movie, as you also get a chance to listen to Nyman's haunting melodies.
but the book, a good foundation if you plan to watch the movie.
A lot for a little.......2005-02-01
The book is terrific-beautifully written-great plot and thoroughly enjoyable. Condition of book was excellent and delivery was quick and easy.
Ada`s way to talk.......2003-01-07
After I saw the video "The Piano" I wanted read the book. I was very fascinated by the story about Ada's life, or rather her way she started her new life. And the whole life without a word. In the video the features of the people are very important and I wondered how it would be in the book. The language is very poetic! The description of the characters and the surrounding is very exact. You think you can feel her feelings and see what she sees.
Love is beautiful and can be cruel.......2000-05-06
The piano is such a beautiful, artistic story of the woman whose will is so strong. Love is warm and kind, but at the same time, it is so destructive. Love is like the ocean that we draw from and jump into. This is a perfect novel for women who know the warmth of love; its hope, its faith, and how cruel it can be. I strongly recommed it!
Powerfull and Emotional.......1999-02-21
The Film and Novel are both very good. For those people who loved and lost someone, this story will most definitely be experienced as powerful and very emotional. The story of a bittered woman who has more or less given up on life. In time she finds a new meaning to her life. Finally letting go of the past, temp faith and start a new future. This is definitely one of the best stories I have read and seen !

Lo primero que hace el hombre con quien se ha casado po poderes, a miles de kilometros de distance, as arrebatarle su piano, su música, su fuente más intensa de comunicación, y cambiarlo por un trozo de tierra que otro colono le entrega. This book of architectural blueprints is a loving, if obsessive, tribute to the minutiae of televised domestic life. Author Mark Bennett's excrutiatingly detailed plans span 25 years of television history, from Tiger's doghouse on The Brady Bunch to The Addams Family's entire manor, including Lurch's harpsichord, Gomez's train set, and Uncle Fester's laboratory. Also included are Laverne and Shirley's bachelorette pad, The Jetson's space unit, and Archie and Edith Bunker's Queens row house. Incredibly, all the plans are drawn to be architecturally feasible; that is, one could actually build from them. To accomplish this feat, the author often had to imagine rooms and areas not shown on the television programs, but only referred to, like Ward Cleaver's den or Ralph and Alice Kramden's bedroom. Included are detailed renderings not only of the characters' homes, but their entire towns, such as the whole of Mayberry and a complete layout of Gilligan's Island.
Book Description
Author and artist Mark Bennett compiles his entertaining collection of blueprints extrapolated from the storylines and sets of the 1950s to 1980s television sitcom homes millions of Americans grew up with. An extraordinary work of imagination, these blueprints of TV homes that are as familiar to us as our neighbor's den and backyard give us a fascinating "real life" view that the camera angles never offered.
From Ward and June Cleaver's house to Rob and Laura Petrie's apartment to Mary Richards's Minneapolis bachelorette apartment to the Jetson's "house" in the clouds, each home is lovingly recreated with painstaking precision in the fine blue lines of architectural blueprints.

blueprints of your favorite homes.......2007-06-14
Reall a fun romp into the old past favorites. I really loved seeing the plans for the Addams family and Mr. Ed. If you always wondered, now you'll know whats behind that door!
Great!.......2006-05-13
This book is as close as you'll get to actually entering the beloved houses of the programs we all loved as kids. Neat-o!!!
50/50.......2005-10-09
Im half happy an half not. As a classic tv fan the book fules highly my interest in the past but does so at the cost of inteligent architecture. The author is supposed to be a good drafter but clearly did not do his homework. All one has to do is watch old episodes and differences between this books plans and the actual sets stand out like lava in the artic.
good, but some errors.......2003-02-03
Ok... I liked the book, but i am a BIG fan of mash, and he had this totally wrong. The Conels office was attached to the same building as the hospital, and the recovery ward.
Hey Folks...give the guy a break.......2001-07-26
This book is awesome! It isn't perfect, but who cares? What a blast from a carefree past. Personally, I think that the guy did an amazing job considering that the sets changed over the years and that he did many of the blueprints years ago...without the aid of a VCR. Realistic dimensions? Yeah, whatever. I wasn't planning on building these places from these diagrams. Also, who says that the sets had realistic dimensions?
I picked the book up on a clearance rack for [$], but, after viewing it, I think it's worth the full price. I can't tell you the memories this thing brought back. This is a killer present for your Baby Boomer friends who were TV addicts as tykes.

Jumble Brainbusters Junior Book II.......2007-09-27
I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED BOOK I AND BOOK II OF JUNIOR BRAINBUSTERS. THERE ARE HOURS OF ENJOYMENT. THE SCRAMBLED WORDS ARE OF EVERYDAY WORDS THAT EVERYONE KNOWS, PLUS THEY GIVE YOU CLUES TO GO BY. IT IS A BIG BOOK, WITH LARGE PRINT. IT SEEMS TO BE FOR SMART KIDS, BUT I'M 65 YEARS OLD, AND I LOVE IT. I SURE HOPE THEY COME OUT WITH BOOK III. THE BOOKS FOR ADULTS, ARE SOMETIMES OVER MY HEAD.
STONGLY RECOMMEND IT.
Great Book!.......2007-02-01
I bought this for my 6 year old. She loves it! She takes it in her backpack to school to work on in the bus line! Alot of the puzzles are just at her level. Some of them are a little harder because they have to do with capitals or cities that she is not familiar with. I also bought one for my 11 year old. Jumble Brain buster Junior I and II are great.

Can be downloaded for free.......2007-08-09
The "Build a Program Now" series, for VB, C# etc can be downloaded for free, when you register the copy of your language, which you can also download free at the microsoft web site.
Why to spend money for this book if you can download it for free?
Not For Me!.......2007-07-28
I am a person who has no prior programming.
I bought this book with the expectation that I could teach myself the basic material in Visual Basic 2005--I was wrong. I'm going to try another approach with another book or a course.
I got to the first project, which I think was too extensive as a starting point. I feel they needed to start out with a less extensive project--a confidence builder.
That's my take and maybe I need a Dummy book.
Ok VB book for beginning programmers that have some familiarity with VB programming. .......2007-05-29
This book focuses on building applications quickly using minimal coding. The projects are completed fairly quickly, leaving the reader scratching their head and wondering what they could possible do to enhance the project. The browser project simply allows you to build a copy of internet explorer, with slight variations on functionality. Not much creativity, it almost seems like they could have created a wizard for building a browser, and have the user change the name and version. This book only seems useful as a precursor to coding. I found this book useful for learning the VB GUI, but not as a beginning coding book. I purchased this book because I don't particularly like to read my computer screen. Book is in full color and includes a CD.
Tough book for beginners.......2007-02-10
I have taught computer applications such as Word, Excel, and Project for many years, but I rarely touch programming languages. This book appeared to be a solid fit: Build a Program Now! However, I simply couldn't connect with the author's style. The author seems to spend an entire page writing about a concept that could have been explained in a paragraph, but topics and code snippets that needed explanation were skipped completely. I have a hunch that Pelland had the perspective of, "Don't kill the newbie reader with crazy terminology; just tell them what to type." The end result, however, is code that works, but how & why it actually works is a Masonic secret. I would have REALLY benefited from an approach such as, "OK morons, here's a six line program that will add two numbers, and show the answer in a Message Box. Notice Line 1 does this. Line 2 creates a variable that does that. Line 3 uses the 'Show' command to blah blah." There was one section that had over 60 lines of code with virtually none of it described or defined. In short, I learned a few things, but the time was not spent well. I gave up about half way through the book after my ego required hospitalization.
Good Cookbook.......2006-11-06
This book actually helped me quite a bit. It is strictly a cookbook with step by step instructions for building several programs. I found the detailed instructions for binding controls on a form to an underlying database very helpful. Once that program is working, it is easy to modify it to get a better understanding of how to code SQL statements in VB and get them to properly interact with the database. The book assumes that you are reasonably familiar with using VS to build forms. It does highlight several useful tricks that I had not seen in the other half-dozen or so books I have on VB. You will need other books to cover the details of VB, but this one is a useful introduction.
