Legendary quality-control pioneer Joseph Juran cooperated with business writer John Butman, who capably traces the evolution of Juran's thought in the context of his life. Born in 1904 in Romania, Juran emigrated to America, where he published such influential books as Quality Control Management (1951) and virtually invented the profession of "outside expert." The author outlines Juran's key ideas (notably the sequences for achieving "breakthrough" and "control") and paints an engaging picture of a workaholic with a dry sense of humor, more interested in helping his clients help themselves than in getting public credit.
Book Description
"I think I am sitting with God."
Such was the awestruck impression of one seminar attendee when he found himself sharing a luncheon table with Joseph Juran, the man whose name has become synonymous with the concept of quality. In the annals of business history, the name Juran resonates with near mythic status. This is the man whose thinking about quality and management revolutionized the way the world does business, a living legend who, along with a few other giants of our age, shaped the course of industrial history. Written with the support of Dr. Juran and the Juran Institute, Juran: A Lifetime of Influence gives us an intimate look at the man, his times, and the evolution of the concepts of quality and management that so profoundly affect business today.
Dr. Juran's remarkable story begins at the turn of the century in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. Joseph Juran was born in a tiny village with unpaved streets and houses with dirt floors, a place that, in his own words, "had no quality problems." His journey to America, in 1912, thrust him into a world of technological marvels, of ocean liners and ice cream, streetcars and flush toilets.
Poverty forced him into his first job at age nine, exposing him to work experiences and conditions that kindled his interest in finding better ways to get things done. John Butman's penetrating narrative explores Joseph Juran's early struggles against prejudice, and how-through chess, languages, algebra, and code-breaking-his genius for analysis and problem-solving emerged.
It was at Western Electric's Hawthorne Works, one of the great factories of the age, that Juran's lifework began to crystallize. An operation of exceptional size and complexity, Hawthorne gave Juran a visceral understanding of the bedrock issues of quality. He learned the sound of a machine malfunctioning, heard the complaints of a skilled operator betrayed by shoddy materials, and discovered the consequences of poor quality control. Then, in a dramatic turn of events, Juran was given the chance to put his innovative skills and ideas to use as an integral part of the Lend-Lease Administration effort in World War II. The immense and urgent undertaking allowed Juran to throw himself into the fight against the Nazis.
Praise for
"Joe Juran has led the quality cause from its earliest days. His progressive influence via this enlightening text will be virtually endless." -Robert W. Galvin Chairman of the Executive Committee, Motorola
"As much as anyone in the field, Dr. Joseph M. Juran is a major influence in the business world's pursuit of quality. Juran: A Lifetime of Influence finally gives the great man his due. Quality gurus and greenhorns alike will find much to savor in this entertaining and educational book." -Robert A. Lutz Vice Chairman, Chrysler Corporation.
"John Butman has captured the extraordinary spirit of one of America's most remarkable pioneers, Joseph M. Juran, in a wonderful text that reads almost like a novel. Here we get a true glimpse of some of the forces that have driven Dr. Juran for over 92 years and of his many breakthrough contributions to world business." -A. Blanton Godfrey Chairman, Juran Institute
"This book provides an intimate look at Juran's personal life, while giving the reader a lucid understanding of his philosophy, teachings, and accomplishments." -G. Howland Blackiston Executive Producer of the PBS television documentary, "An Immigrant's Gift"
"Juran: A Lifetime of Influence is a well-documented, easy-to-read biography of a remarkable man in a critical period of the twentieth century. Many hitherto untold anecdotes give us insight into Dr. Juran's influence on society. I recommend it not only to quality professionals and business managers, but also to the general public as well." -Yoshinao Nakada Technical Manager, Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies.

Essential work on a seminal leader in the quality movement.......1997-05-08
In 1947 America, what did "Made in Japan" mean? Today, Americans feel exactly the opposite
about this phrase, due in no small part to the lifetime of influence of the work of Joseph Moses
Juran, one of the world's seminal leaders in the quality movement. Born in 1904, Juran's
extraordinary intensity (he's still at it) and his brilliant prescience about quality have established world
renown respect for his quality consulting, teaching, and especially his writing. Author Butman
depends heavily on Juran's extensive personal involvement in this first and only authorized biography
that understandably shies away from a more critical analysis of Juran's impact in business. Butman
describes numerous details of Juran's life, including his early life of dire poverty in Romania, the
family's trek across the world to live in a tar-paper shack in Minneapolis, Minnesota, his early odd
jobs from age nine to sixteen, his academic proficiency and expertise in chess, his college degree in
electrical engineering (the first in his family history), and his career years with Western Electric in the
famed Hawthorne plant. Juran was employed there during the time of the now famous Hawthorne
studies, as was W.E.Deming, although the two never actually met while with the company. Juran's
surprisingly frank acknowledgment of his lack of managerial skills and his comments on the
fascinating experience working with immediate post World War II Japan (he first travelled there in
1954) establish a personal connection with this self confessed abrasive quality leader who means so
much to countless quality professionals throughout the world. Juran's works abound (to quality
professionals, his massive 2,000 page "Quality Control Handbook" is sacrosanct) and are
considered fundamental references for anyone interested in better understanding the meaning of
quality and how best to integrate these principles in any organization. At age 92, Juran now devotes
his time to writing a three volume autobiography that should further fill in the details of this
extraordinary life. This is a fascinating story essential for all quality professionals.

Book Description
Douglas Bader was a legend in his lifetime. After losing both legs in an air crash in 1931 and being dismissed as a cripple by the Royal Air Force, he fought his way back into the cockpit of a Spitfire to become one of the great heroes of the Battle of Britain. This inspiring biography of the famous World War II fighter pilot, first published in 1954, has a following of faithful readers who come back to the book time and again to re-read, share with their children and pass along to friends. Not many books have made such an impact on people's lives. Bader's story is so extraordinary that no one would dare invent it, and Brickhill succeeds in matching the excitement of Bader's war deeds with the triumph of his greater battle over a severe handicap. Told he would never walk without a cane, Bader learned to dance, swim, golf, and play tennis. Told he would never fly again, he became not only one of the RAF's top combat pilots but a squadron leader and innovator of fighter tactics that helped win the Battle of Britain. Among the thrilling incidents chronicled in the book are Bader's first successful encounter with an enemy plane, his own shoot down, and his succession of escapes from German prisons.

Reach For The Sky.......2007-05-29
I read this book when I was 9 yrs. old and now that I read it again I think that this is one of those books that I will keep and read over and over.
This is a riveting story that makes you feel like you are there experiencing the events yourself.
A greate read.......2007-05-20
This was one of the first war ace biographies I've ever read, back when I was fourteen.
It's a pleasure to see it published again, to replace my old copy.
Of course, Mr. Brickhill seems to be a huge fan of Bader, but who in England is not, even those who realize that Bader had a difficult temper, but a difficult temper that was responsibels for getting back in a warplane in war tiem RAF without both legs!
Good read, a classic.
Awesome service.......2007-04-11

Book Description
In 1985, after watching the NCAA Finals with a friend who happened to write for Sports Illustrated, David Barrett sent him a song he wrote. Without David knowing it, his friend took the song to CBS. And the rest, as they say, is history.
The song "One Shining Moment" now crowns the NCAA Basketball Finals, dampening every eye in the arena. A new version, sung by Luther Vandross, pushes the song's power to a new height. This truly American anthem, celebrating its 20th anniversary as the closing moment of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, is now an inspirational book that will move anyone toward their best - be it championship basketball game or a job interview.
The Notebook, which will include a CD single of this iconic anthem is the perfect gift book for anyone needing encouragement that in order to succeed you need to put it all on the line. This book should receive placement during the four week NCAA basketball tournament and then have another strong selling season during the graduation gift holiday.

FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT..........2007-04-22
This is a well-written and exhaustively researched book about Bette Davis. The narrative of her complex life is always entertaining and is presented in chronological fashion. Her career serves as the backdrop for this analytical recounting of her colorful life. The focus, however, remains on Bette Davis, the woman, and her story is skillfully told.
The portrait of Ms. Davis that emerges from the pages of this book is a sympathetic one, despite the author's presentation of Ms. Davis as a flesh and blood woman with many issues. It is a biography that will keep the reader turning its pages, as it is so eminently readable. Moreover, the black and white photographs that are included in the book serve to augment the reader's enjoyment. Fans of Bette Davis, as well as those who appreciate well-written biographies and memoirs, will find much to like about this book.
Very Thorough But Biased Account Of Davis' Life.......1999-06-19
I appreciated the intricate details Spada provided in the telling of Davis' life story. What I could have done without were the implications that Davis caused the death of her husband as well as the brain damage from which her adopted daughter suffered! Apparently no accidents even peripherally connected with Davis can occur without making her bear the burdon of the blame. Is this amateur sleuthing or sensationalism or just mean-spiritedness? Makes you wonder if BD Hyman had a hand in the writing of this book.
You will understand the tortured woman that was Bette Davis!.......1998-10-21
James Spada has written a thoroughly detailed, well-researched novel about the life of one of the movies' most enduring stars. He spares no punches to Bette Davis, but, at the same time, offers better understanding of her motives in many situations. The chapters dealing with the last four years of her life were enough to bring tears to my eyes, as I could just imagine this wonderful woman hurting so badly from the betrayal of daughter B.D. Bette's son Michael, however, proves to be a loyal, forgiving son to her. The last line really sums it up when it says something to the effect of.....and she would be happy to know that her fans miss and respect her despite the fact that she was less than a perfect human being. This is a GREAT biography!!!
Exhaustive Account of the Great Davis.......1997-11-25
Readable, detailed and persuasive, this serious biography of Bette Davis offers a balanced, engrossing account of her colorful life. The author clearly recounts her dogged rise to screen stardom, her stormy marriages, and her often contradictory actions and statements. Many of the murkier incidents in the actress's life (namely the mysterious death of her second husband) are closely examined. Davis' acting, and the relative worth and importance of her many films get short shrift, but as a standard biography of a film star, Spada's book is quite solid. It's probably best read in tandem with Davis' autobiography, "The Lonely Life", and the memoir "Mother Goddam" to which she contributed notes and addendum. A more entertaining account of Davis, with better analysis of her films, is Lawrence Quirk's fan-oriented "Faster Your Seatbelts: The Tempestuous Life Of Bette Davis." Now, that book is truly a joy to read!

Customer Reviews:
A trip down memory lane........2007-02-03
Looking at this book reminded me of the many toys and games that I grew up with or found in the attic when I went snooping through the old stuff as a kid. This book is very well done, with lots of pictures and interesting facts. It is obvious that the book is very well researched. Worth the money.
I was looking for a price guide...........2005-03-08
I was looking for a price guide for these toys and this isn't it, but I didn't even care because this book is fabulous. Wonderful pictures and the origination of the most beloved toys. Big, thick heavy book. Nice coffee table book.
Memory Lane for Toys and Games.......2004-11-30
If you have fond recollections of tossing a Frisbee with a friend, putting a hotel on Boardwalk, using a "Q" on a triple word score, dressing a Barbie doll, watching a Slinky descend a stairway, yelling "Yahtzee," or winning a game of Trivial Pursuit or Pictionary, this fine retrospective by Tim Walsh belongs on your coffee table. All those memories and more came back for me as I turned the pages of "The Playmakers -- Amazing Origins of Timeless Toys" and learned of the inspirations, the struggles, the near-misses and the overwhelming successes of toy and game inventors of the 20th Century. The nostalgic experience and the well-researched backgrounds of these fun and educational diversions make for hours of reading and fact-finding enjoyment. I was surprised to learn that most of the big sellers over the decades have been of American origin -- though Trivial Pursuit came out of Canada and Rubik's Cube has Hungarian roots. It's a bullet-proof selection for anyone on your Christmas list who never quite grew up when it comes to playing with toys and games.
A Historical Chapter in the Civilization of Man. .......2004-08-30
Have you ever wondered who the creators are of the wonderful toys and games you and your family have enjoyed over the years? THE PLAYMAKERS has the answers. You may be especially interested in those most famous or very rare toys or games that you have tried or maybe just heard about over the years.
Even those that may deny they are toy lovers must admit they have some time or another played a game they really enjoyed or had a favorite toy of their childhood. Therefore, everyone is a toy lover! THE PLAYMAKERS will bring back memories of happy times for all ages. The collective book Tim Walsh has put together is remarkable. This is not about toys that can be picked up in any toy store or mall or even those toys made just for children. No, no, no! This is about toys for everyone: young and old, male and female. Toys and games made for all to enjoy.
This colorful, informative book by Tim Walsh is so fascinating that every family should have one in their bookcase. THE PLAYMAKERS is a terrific book that is not only fun to read but is also an historical chapter in the civilization of man.
A Museum in Hardcover.......2004-07-02
A flip through the pages of Tim Walsh's "The Playmakers" is a trip in a time machine. I had more fun reminiscing about my favorite toys than I remember having when I played with them 25 years ago! The genesis of the greatest toys of all time is a captivating story that has never before been told in such interesting detail. Tim's passion for playthings oozes from the pages and stirred nostalgia in the heart of this overgrown kid.

I love to boogie!.......2007-01-23
As usual, this is the most wonderful, fulfilling, mesmerizing game out there! Thanks again, Sims creators! My daughter received this for Christmas, took it to her room, and we haven't seen her since. Just kidding! She loves it!
Ecellent information on the game........2006-12-25
These guides are worth every dollar if you want to get the most out of your game.
Much improvment over other Sims 2 guides.........2006-09-26
I've avoided purchasing Prima's other strategy guides for the Sims expansions because Prima has a habit of devoting half of their guides to the base game and the rest to the expansion pack. In the guide for Nightlife however they've improved. More than half of the guide is devoted to Nightlife: new socials, new characters, new relationships, new objects..etc. There's still information on the base game which could have been left out however overall I do recommend the guide. I don't have to skip over the first half of the book to find information on the expansion pack with this guide. Well done Prima thank you!
Ok, but not great.......2006-03-13
I hoped for more information about the game in general and less images of new products or objects from the game. There were not enough tricks and tricks included to make it worth the price.
Very good guide to The Sims 2 Nightlife.......2006-02-17
This book follows the same format as the other Prima guides to the Sims. It has lots of tips about game play and good overviews of how the new elements of the expansion pack work. It includes tables of objects, community lots, and new commands so that you can look items up fairly quickly during game play.
The primary negatives are the lack of an index (also missing in the other Prima guides) and the repeated use of the same graphics from the game over and over throughout the book.
Still, if you are a Sims 2 fan and have the Nightlife expansion pack this is a very helpful book.
