Branch Rickey was one of the most important and charismatic figures in all of baseball, the archetype for all general managers who would follow. His contributions to the game were both numerous and highly significant; they include the desegregation of the majors, airline travel to road games, and the innovation of the minor league "farm" system.
This work focuses on Rickey's tenure as the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, from 1950 through 1955. In addition to contemporary accounts, Rickey's personal correspondence and interoffice memorandums are used to document his struggle to revamp the fate of a small-market team.

Film, a latecomer to the realm of artistic media, alludes to, absorbs, and undermines the discourses of the other arts-literature and painting especially-in order to carve out a position for itself among them. Exposing the anxiety in film's relation to its rival arts, Brigitte Peucker analyzes central issues involved in generic boundary crossing as they pertain to film and situates them in a theoretical framework. The figure of the human body takes center stage in Peucker's innovative study, for it is through this figure that the conjunction of literary and painterly discourses persistently articulates itself. It is through the human body, too, that film's consciousness of itself as a hybrid text and as a "machine for simulation" makes itself deeply felt. In films ranging from Weimar cinema through Griffith, Hitchcock, and Greenaway, Peucker probes issues in aesthetics problematized by Diderot and Kleist, among others. She argues that the introduction of movement into visual representation occasioned by film brings with it an underlying tension suggestive of castration and death. Peucker goes on to demonstrate how the encounter between narrative and image is both gendered and sexualized, rendering film a "monstrous" hybrid. In a final section, she explores in specific cinematic texts the permeable boundary between the real and representation, suggesting how effects such as tableau vivant and trompe l'oeil figure sexuality and death.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Two new linear reconstruction techniques are developed to improve the resolution of images collected by ground-based telescopes imaging through atmospheric turbulence. The classical approach involves the application of constrained least squares (CLS) to the deconvolution from wavefront sensing (DWFS) technique. The new algorithm incorporates blur and noise models to select the appropriate regularization constant automatically. In all cases examined, the Newton-Raphson minimization converged to a solution in less than 10 iterations. The non-iterative Bayesian approach involves the development of a new vector Wiener filter which is optimal with respect to mean square error (MSE) for a non-stationary object class degraded by atmospheric turbulence and measurement noise. This research involves the first extension of the Wiener filter to account properly for shot noise and an unknown, random optical transfer function (OTF). The vector Wiener filter provides superior reconstructions when compared to the traditional scalar Wiener filter for a non- stationary object class. In addition, the new filter can provide a superresolution capability when the object's Fourier domain statistics are known for spatial frequencies beyond the OTF cutoff. A generalized performance and robustness study of the vector Wiener filter showed that MSE performance is fundamentally limited by object signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and correlation between object pixels.

the book did have some valid points and ideas about conspiracy's but some of them seemed a little too far fetched. I noticed that if u look at the front cover in white or bright light carefully you can see the numbers 666 on the mans forehead and a certain man named aleister crowly has a mention in this book....coincidence? thats the only thing i found particulary odd about the book.

For the Openminded.......2001-05-18

This book doesn't pretend to be 100% true. The editor Keith even warns to the introduction of some articles that this or that particular one may be deliberate disinformation. However, as he notes in the introduction to the book, most media is unwilling to even allow the public to consider ideas that are counter to accepted dogma and make up their own minds, and the purpose of the book is to stimulate debate.

Some of the articles are extremely well researched and beyond dispute and in the vein of the Project Censored book series, like one proving that the Jonestown Massacre was NOT a mass suicide but a mass murder (drinking poison Kool-Aid does not leave bullet holes in one's back). There are more questionable but still interesting articles, e.g. one on how Aids was invented by the government to eliminate blacks and gays, but with some clearly factual background. A, what I assume, is a brilliant social satire written from the point of view of "The Conspiracy" called "Quiet Weapons for Secret Wars" which one realizes, after reading for a while, is about how the monetary system ITSELF(vs. Capitalism, etc.) may be seen as a tool of social control. There are also paranoid rants of varying worth, but the most indisputely brilliant of them being by Shelby Downard which may be easy to dismiss on an intellectual level, but is very effective on an emotional level.

Also included is a brilliant essay "Is Paranoia a Form of Awareness?" written by the only person to have published a book about Lee Harvey Oswald BEFORE the Kennedy Assasination (about their life in the Marines and as guinea pigs for MK-Ultra) that notes that the so-called average person is usually in a state of denial and also notes his own experiences with the Garrison investigation (depicted in the movie JFK).

And don't place any importance into the fact that there is a swastika on the cover. There is also a cross, a crescent, and other symbols that have been used to control the masses on the cover. The fact that someone who hasn't even read the book missed the point further illustrates the book's necessity.

Couldn't even finish it.......2001-03-22

If ever there was a book that epidomized the phrase "you can't judge a book by it's cover", this is it.

It's just a collection of writings that couldn't make it into real conspiracy books. And there's a reason: because they are incoherent, poorly written and just plain stupid. The longest one is about how the Masons did everything, but it seems that there is no transition between his ideas. Two paragraphs about Masonic control of the royal throne in Englans and suddenly it changes to JFK. You reread it thinking that you missed something, but you didn't. Terrible.

Lots of Masonic/Illuminati conspiracy theories, which I'm not really into. But if you are, I would have to imagine that there are better books on the subject.

A Must Read.......2001-02-28

This book is a page-turner and hard to put down, though at times one must put it down to absorb the shock of the information. Many will be surprised, and actually horrified how the government within a government worked behind the scenes for many years up to the present. I highly recommend this book and ignore and am amused at those who desire to continue to keep the information hidden and suppressed.

See the swastika on the cover? I bought the book and then returned it. Don't waste your time. You'll find more secrets in your local newspaer than here. Sorry guys, this book is just not woth the paper it is printed on.

Check out an online FAQ instead..........2000-06-18

At first glance, it looks like a fairly comprehensive guide. But once you sit down and try to play through the game with it, it's flaws (and there are many) really begin to show. As Alundra 2 is a fairly linear title, there was a concentrated effort on providing a walkthrough of all the game's dungeons, rather than fill up pages with diagrams of towns and plot spoilers. This is a strong point of any strategy guide, this one in particular. However, being that a majority of the game is puzzle solving, a text based approach is simply not effective most of the time. The book mentions the puzzles to you, and merely says "solve the puzzle and the door will open" (or something to that effect) 50% of the time. This doesn't help players who can't figure out how to do this on their own (that's why they purchased the guide!). The few screenshots that accompany the generously margined pages are quite blurry, and thus do not help the player achieve any sense of orientation. And more often than not, these "screen shots" are placed 4 or 5 paragraphs after the solution (if there is one) is mentioned! Sometimes I had to flip back a page just to see what the caption was talking about. All of the major areas (and some of the minor ones) are mapped out in the back of the guide, but in such a small scale that it's impossible to make out anything from them, save where one room leads in to another. Every aspect of one game area was locked onto one or two pages (i.e., the first town, which has 2 areas, takes up one page, while one of the larger dungeons, with over 25 areas, also takes up one page--get the picture?). These maps are additonally incompletely labeled; you'll find no mention or pointing out of the powerful items, or half of the game's secrets for that matter. Mini-games are mentioned, but not in any bit of detail save where to find them. And forget about finding the puzzle pieces, special rings, and trading items. The only ones mentioned in the walkthrough are things I guarantee this author found; no effort was made to make this part of the book complete, and that was quite frustrating. The only other thing I consider a strong point to this book would be the enemy compendium and boss guide. Not that any of the game's creatures were that challenging, but an effort was made here to give the player as much information about the enemies as possible--this is as should be. But having this one piece doesn't make the guide outstanding. You're better off with an online FAQ to get you through the tougher puzzles and to help you locate the game's secrets.

It's not the concepts, but the way they are presented that discouraged me from enjoying this book. I don't know if it's British colloquialisms, or my lack of understanding. I read and re-read the same paragraph(s) several times! Soft, fluffy, dull, meandering; are just a few words I can use to describe this writing style.

This book was pretty well a waste of time. There is some information that's useful, but not enough to justify reading it. As stated in a previous review, the book is horribly laid out, and covers a number of things that aren't really NLP related.

I am still reading this book. I sometimes read it through chapter by chapter and other times I zero in on a particular chapter that has valuable information.

This was a great reference to my theories class. Studying Neuro-Linguistic Programming could not be more easily explained.
The removable "cheat sheet" at the beginning of the book is helpful for the beginner.
