    Book Description

In this clever twist on the traditional sports biography, Chin focuses on the 7'5'' Yao Ming, the Chinese-born basketball star whose skills during his first year playing with the NBA's Houston Rockets were nothing short of remarkable. Chin (author of the graphic novel Nine of One) deftly weaves Yao's biography and the events of his first season as Houston's number-one draft pick with an explanation of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching-along with numerous quotes from this venerable Chinese philosophical classic-as a way of explaining the phenomenon of a player who is "redefining how Asians could view themselves, as well as the image of the athlete in modern society." Chin is a skilled writer with an obvious love of basketball who provides compelling insights into Yao's skills, such as how his role as the linchpin for both the Rockets' offense and defense makes him, in a Taoist sense, the "anti-center": "Embodying the qualities of water, he is fluid as much as fixed." But Chin sometimes overreaches, such as in his view that "[b]y understanding the basic Taoist relationship between difficult and easy, Yao was able to draw upon Lao's timeless wisdom for comfort in the here and now." A player like Yao who signs a $200,000 endorsement deal with Nike can be seen as far more Western than Eastern, a point which Chin himself makes in other good observations about Houston's expanding Asian-American community and the remarkable media savvy that Yao has shown when dealing with NBA superstars like Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley.

The author wrote this book by compiling quotes from lots of others. In Hokkian, there is a saying, "Kong2 Ye3 Sou1", which can be roughly translated into "preaching high principals". I can't stand the writing, and I believe it would put anyone to sleep. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars An innovative biography & a read well worth your while.......2004-11-13

I'm a big basketball fan and a friend recommended this book to me. I really found it very interesting, informative, and yes, insightful. As opposed to a standard rehashing of a celebrity?s biography, or predictable blow by blow travelogue, this book takes a more dynamic approach to looking at why Yao has become such an international phenomenon. By seamlessly blending current events with basketball history, Chin explains what this athlete symbolizes, how he represents so many diverse fans, and why this all matters in today?s global village. Now I can see how some people might not get the subtler messages - the relevance of the 2,000 year tradition of Chinese philosophy with modern life isn?t headline news in the US. But the author does a worthy job of making these links, and supporting the larger case that Westerners have to be more aware of Eastern perspectives (just as Asia has followed America), since this "alternative" awareness actually can help us lead more well-rounded lives. And in our crazy world, I think that is a lesson well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Chin's book is worthy while also being cutting-edge........2004-07-07

If you are expecting to read "The Tao of Yao" because you are a Yao Ming fan, you will come away with some good & funny info about this gentle giant. But, this book is so much more as you progress from chapter to chapter! I often wondered why my hair would rise whenever I watched Yao play basketball on TV, but, I just thought it was because I was watching a very good "tall" basketball player with some skills.
Chin does a marvelous job of blueprinting how Yao's impact on the NBA scene is more profound than many thought possible.

2 out of 5 stars Yao Ming isn't even the main focus of the book........2004-07-01

I (and probably everyone else who got this) bought this book simply because I thought it was a biography on the life of basketball player Yao Ming. Turns out that I was wrong. I found nothing on how Yao Ming grew up or how he decided he wanted to play basketball (and if these topics were in the book, they were probably only briefly mentioned).

The main topic in this book is the history of China, along with a few past quotes from Yao thrown in every once in awhile. I find it ridiculous how they need to make a book that was supposed to be about Yao into nothing but a history lesson for us. That's like if I were to go to some foreign country, become a famous basketball player, have a book written about me, and have it include nothing but American history. People buy books to learn about the person, not the country he's from.

The many quotes included was another bad decision which shouldn't have been in the book. Yao pretty much says almost the exact same thing in each one of his quotes (something along the lines of "I'm so honored to be playing in America and am really enjoying my time here".) I'd say there's about 60 quotes in "The Tao of Yao", so this can get boring pretty fast. Simply put, there's very few redeeming factors in this book and Yao Ming fans will most likely be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars An average read........2004-04-25

I had this sent to me as a gift as it is not a book that I would ever pay full price for. It was a fine book that talks about Yao's notable first season.

there are some great chapters on other players and the tie-in to Chinese literature and Taoism is clever, at times. However, I found it repetitive that almost every chapter went on and on about how great Yao will be. I have no doubt that this is true, but do we have to hear that from every player, legend, or sports caster that the book interviewed?

Overall, it was interesting but I would have liked to hear more about his youth, childhood and upbringing rather than chapter after chapter of his "potential."

Actors, take some time to read this book before setting out on your next audition. As one of my old drama professors used to say, it might give you a jolt of "Theatrical Realities" -- and since that old professor was Harold Lang, star of "Pal Joey" and "Kiss Me, Kate," He knew how hard those realities could be. It all boils down to, "What do THEY want?"

            Book Description

In Gilligan Unbound, distinguished Shakespeare scholar and literary critic, Paul A. Cantor, proves once and for all that popular culture can be every bit as complex, meaningful, and provocative as the most celebrated works of literature--and a lot more fun. Cantor analyzes and interprets a wide variety of classic television programs with the same seriousness, care, and creativity as he would Hamlet or Macbeth to reveal how dramatically America's image of itself has evolved from the 1960s to the present. 4 out of 5 stars Insightful Cultural History at its Core, Problematic in its Polemics.......2006-06-30

In Gilligan Unbound, Paul Cantor argues that the content of American popular culture tracks important changes in the national experience of globalization during and after the Cold War. He largely focuses on four American television franchises to make this case. These are Gilligan's Island (1964-67), Star Trek (1966-69), The Simpsons (1989-) and The X-Files (1993-2002).

Cantor makes a case that during the Cold War, Americans saw globalization in a global imaginary of democratization and Americanization. In essence, America bestowed an essential kernel of freedom and equality to the farthest reaches of the Earth. This is evident in Gilligan's Island in which an economically, occupationally, and gender-balanced group of Americans become stranded incommunicado on a pre-industrial island. They are able to reproduce the convenient trappings of contemporary American life. More important is that although the characters represent scientific expertise, cultured wealth with business acumen, and physical prowess, it is the unremarkable Gilligan whose actions and insights are consistently pivotal. For Cantor, Gilligan is the hero of a classless society. Despite being amidst specialized aptitudes, it is the agency of the common man that is liberated by American global expansion. For Cantor, Gilligan's Island suggests that not only is industrial abundance an outgrowth of American character but its dividends are an essential egalitarianism that underlies any conspicuous difference in station or status.

The island as a project of American expansion is complimented by the cavalier actions of Captain Kirk in Star Trek. Here, Cantor notes more obvious economic undertones (the ship is called "Enterprise") as the captain remakes the society of many planets to "eliminate any vestiges of aristocracy or theocracy in the universe (41)." He also engages the movie Star Trek VI as an allegory of the end of the cold war. For him, the end of the Klingon threat in the Star Trek universe models a crisis of American national identity with the fall of the Soviet Union. He sees this crisis mirrored in a different global imaginary that rises in the popular culture of the 1990s. This is symbolized in The Simpsons, which reflect a disillusionment with national politics by centering political agency in the local. Cantor sees this agency, reflected in the direct influence that members of the Simpson family have in leadership and policy in their fictitious town of Springfield, as nostalgic for an earlier time in American history. This harkens to a global imaginary of encroachment on the local, a shift in which Americans are the recipients and not the purveyors of global expansion. The book also sees this shift in The X-Files, in which the government is a culpable conspirator in abstract global and extraterrestrial alliances. Rather than Americans growing more America from their privileged flesh on an island, Cantor models the experience of post-Cold War globalization as the American island being overrun by a globe of overwhelming plots that are the endless subtext of normalcy.

While Gilligan Unbound finds success in its project to document the changing culture of globalization, this project is damaged and obscured by the author's defensive political editorial. He is adamant that his politics are not liberal and he is also explicit that though his essays study culture, he does not associate with the field of cultural studies. Sound confusing? It is. Scholarly analysis commingles with unreferenced claims, like "Television generally acts as if religion played little or no role in the daily lives of Americans, even though *the evidence* points to exactly the opposite conclusion [emphasis mine] (78)." No such evidence is cited. Other opinions couched in scholarly language--like "the television community itself is largely secular in its outlook (78)"--result in a manuscript that is spastic at best. While it is unusual for a cultural studies text to avoid modeling social power (and whatever way he spins it this is a cultural studies text), Cantor's work is nonetheless a serious contribution to this field if one graciously exhumes his project from the grave of arbitrary polemics. I give four stars for scholarly significance, not for presentation.

I really liked this book, perhaps it is my love for the simpsons and gilligan's island that made me feel this way.

Now when i have heavy philosophical discussions with my friends, i won't feel so insecure when applying simpson's references to them...thanks

5 out of 5 stars best work of literary criticism in the 21st century.......2002-12-10

Every fan of the Simpsons or X-files should own this book. Paul Cantor is a true genius and perhaps the best at placing American pop culture in the context of our literary, historical, and political tradition.

4 out of 5 stars just sit right back, the truth is out there?.......2002-04-08

No, I did not buy this book. (I love my local library and I am old-fashoined) Yes, I was seduced by the subject matter and title photo of Gilligan and the skipper. 3 of the 4 stars I give this book is for the discussion and choice of the two comedy shows--Gilligan's Island and the Simpsons. Growing up with the castaways as a surrogate family, and then as a smart-aleck 30-something revelling in the magic of Springfield, I applaud Cantor's choice of these two shows for scrutiny. But his political conclusions seem forced, and reductionist. And his analysis of the two purported "dramas," Star Trek and the X-Files are soporific, lacking the bite of the comedy sections. The real message may not be political, but interpretive: TV is what we want and need it to be, both when it is first produced, and in the immortality of syndication. None of these shows will ever die. And moreover, Krusty the Clown and Thurston Howell III are permanent residents of my twisted psyche.
What I most crave are cogent analyses of the Andy Griffith Show and Green Acres. Both '60's shows dealing with rural life in the South, but from distinctly different vantages. Andy taught us all much about wisdom and fatherhood in the era of segregation. Oliver Douglas taught us that city smarts cut no ice in the land of down home zaniness. Who is crazier--a transplanted New York lawyer with a Hungarian wife who can't grow corn, or a man who consults his pig before making business decisions?

These miniatures exceeded my expectations. The figures are imaginatively formed and the detail is sharp. The set I received had little flash--no more than you'd expect from any new minature. I've been dealing with miniatures since at least 1983 and have seen much worse at higher cost. I highly recommend this set.

1 out of 5 stars Not even in the same ball park as Ral Partha Miniatures.......2002-12-23

First I must say I started Painting miniatures in the late 80s, so it is not like I am new to this or that I am from the great old days of miniatures for war games before Gary and his friends creating D&D. And I have taken a few years off from purchasing miniatures. But after buying some Partha miniatures from ironwindmetals and then these wotc I must say wotc has not impressed me. While the plastic bases have never been my thing at least the parth ones made in the late 90s fit into their bases correct these wotc miniatures are either way to small or a few are so fat that I thought about getting out a grinder instead of a file. While the flash was excessive on a few it really is easy to remove so I would not complain to wotc about it. But hear this wotc if you can't even ship a Mialee figure in the box like the art work on the back and the displacer beast comes cut in halves that don't come together even close and the ogre's arm won't fit into its socket and I get an extra nameless drow but no halfdragon mage to name just a few problems you need to fix something or you deserve less than one star!

In just the first use it saved me many hours of time and enabled me to set up the Exchange Server to automatically download mail from POP3 Website accounts and store it in the local mailbox. Users are happy, I'm happy (no storage used on the Web server and I don't have to configure Outlook on every computer in the building for the user's POP3 email), and life is good. After that, I read the rest of the book. (OK, I only skimmed parts of it.) I found several other tips that I have since used, like redirecting the user's "My Documents" to a folder on the server. The book also comes with a CD that contains a PDF copy of the book along with numerous Knowledge Base articles, white papers, and other such support documents. I left the hard copy of the book at my home but put the CD onsite so I would have it there in case I need it. All-in-all, this was a great investment and I recommend it to others using MS SBS.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous store of information on SBS.......2007-07-13

This book has everything in it. That said, for the neophyte SBS user, it's organization and presentation challenges even the most persistent reader.

Key steps in a procedure are often submerged in the center of paragraphs without any highlighting to indicate the special importance of the content. I would much prefer the use of lead-in paragraphs with bulleted lists of the sequential steps in which a procedure must be accomplished. The action verb in each step should be well high-lighted in bold type.

And, the choice of fonts for the publication makes it difficult to read for those of us with limited vision. Thankfully, the inclusion of the full (PDF) book on CD helps overcome this shortcoming. Still, the only _real_ way to use a book is to flip through it; you can't do that with a PDF.

I think the book's content is remarkably current. Anyone who has used one of these very, very complex software packages knows that the only constant is change. Mr. Russel has helped me understand concepts that persist through the inevitable changes.

It's easy to tell that the preparation of the Administrator's Companion is a labor of love; it will surely become a treasured volume in my library.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent must read for all SBSers out there.......2007-06-15

This is a great book. Easy to read, full of real world footnotes, that the authors shares with the reader. I like the format, the detail on most topics covered. There are some weaknesses I found, but they are minor complaints when compared to the overall quality of this guide:

            1. Very little explanation of Volume Shadow Copy, that its enabled by default is nice, but what partition (or what logic does SBS use when deciding to enable it), no detailed explanation on how it works, how to adjust it, nor how the clients get the Shadow Copy Client.
            2. I would have also liked a little more advanced custom installation walk-through, with explanations and justifications for changing pathnames for folders such as "User Shared Folder", "ClientApps", Exchange itself, some SBS compononets..

5 out of 5 stars Great Success using Microsoft Windows SBS Administrator Companion.......2007-06-12

This guide/manual is extremely detailed and walks you step by step through the process of installing and configuring a server using Windows Small Business Server 2003.

I didn't have experience using Small Business Server and I couldn't have completed a proper installation/setup and configuration of our Server unless I had this book. I tried prior having the book and ran into several issues. I had to restart the process and I'll was well when I had this manual to guide me.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking to install Windows Small Business Server 2003. It makes the process go much quicker and without error. I also learned quite a bit just browsing through the entire book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, 5 stars, do not listen to the 1 star review.......2007-06-06

This book has everything you need. I've installed SBS 2003 R2 for 3 different companies so far, this book came in handy each time.

If I have time I will come back and share some specific examples, but for now I just wanted to say this book does not deserve a 1 star rating, its 5 stars all the way!

            1 out of 5 stars Too Basic.......2006-08-06

Provides basic understanding of SBS at best. I found more useful information from Knowledge Base. I was really disappointed. Skip this one and try something else.

            5 out of 5 stars SBS 2003 Administrator's Companion Book.......2006-03-15

Very valuable resource for installing and maintaining SBS 2003. It is also an indispensible reference for the 70-282 exam.

5 out of 5 stars Great indepth stuff in untouched areas.......2005-10-20

This is not a beginners book or one for the feint hearted. It delves deep inside some of the hard to do things with SBS 2003 such as Wireless integration with SBS. Great examples and easy to follow. Great addition to the advanced SBSers library for sure

5 out of 5 stars Full of Good Tips and Useful Information.......2005-08-23

This book has at least 50 good tips of useful information that go beyond any wizards. Reviewers who say this book has nothing but wizards, probably did not actually read the book.

There are sidebars titled "Under The Hood" and "Real World" that provide explanations and suggested practices. There also are sections entitled Note, Tip, Secutity Alert, Caution and Planning that provides additional emphasis and information. The authors specifically state that "... this book is required when you want to do something slightly out of the ordinary--or when you need additional understanding of what a wizard is doing." (See page xxii.) In my humble opinion, they accomplished that feat very well.

I have been using SBS since version NT 4.5 so I'm not a newbie. Yes, some of the information may already be known to experienced users, but it is nice to have it all at your fingertips. It also can validate your current practices and give you confidence that you are doing it right.
