Book Description

My Life as a Gay Man in a Straight Woman's Body

Unique Title Reflects Author's Most Intriguing Life

There is little about Carol Sherman-Jones' life that one could characterize as normal. How many other sixth graders do you know who would hire the playground bully to break her arm just so she could get some attention? How many people do you know who have wrestled a midget in lime Jell-O to earn some rent money? How many people do you know who have purchased a rundown bar for one dollar and then, with no business experience whatsoever, turned it into wildly successful gay bar?

Carol Sherman-Jones has done all that and a lot more. With an irrepressibly irreverent wit, she shares all in her autobiography titled My Life as a Gay Man in a Straight Woman's Body. In what she describes as an extremely cathartic experience, Sherman-Jones bares her most painful secrets as well as her most incredible highs.

"I'm still waiting for the reaction from some members of my family and from some of my closest friends," she admits with a laugh. "My life has always been an open book, but now it really is!"

She says it wasn't until she opened Carol's Corner Café in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, that she felt that she had "arrived." It was there that she created a microcosm of a utopian world where everyone was welcome without prejudice, herself included. And it was there with a sense of utter helplessness that she watched friend after friend succumb to the fatal complications resulting from AIDS.

Through laughter and tears, the author shares her search for acceptance and how she eventually found it in the gay community. Hers is a message of tolerance, hope, and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable life, lived fully and with humor . . ........2003-02-07

An entertaining, honest and balanced account by a woman who not only teaches tolerance via the telling of her life story, but lives it every day.

I felt uplifted as I read about Sherman-Jones' experiences, even by the parts that must have been difficult for her to live through, and surely difficult to write about so bravely. Because of her willingness to share her life so openly in the pages of this book, at times I felt that I was right there, in story with her.

Well, perhaps not while she was wrestling the midget in the pool of Jell-O. :-) But the ability to connect with the reader, and make the story seem, at times, like the reader's own, is the mark of an excellent writer. Sherman-Jones' mastery of this important benchmark makes me eager to see the next book by this first-time author.

5 out of 5 stars My Life as a Gay Man in a Straight Woman's Body.......2002-02-07

My Life as a Gay Man in a Straight Woman's Body is much more than the entertaining slice of life history of Carol Sherman-Jones. Carol, one of Cincinnati's most energetic and in your face personalities is also one of our finest non-gay allies. She takes the reader through her life, thus far, both troubled and triumphant. She offers an honest assessment of both her gifts and difficult life struggles. Carol invites the reader into interesting vignettes of her history, well written and presented in her own colorful descriptions and charming but blunt style. While her writing style is entertaining, the reader will come away feeling priviledged to have been included on the painful road of a woman whose life journey toward recovery has a message of hope and joyful inclusion for all--gay, straight or, well, whatever. Cincinnatians who frequented either or both of Carol's wonderful restaurants will sit back to remember how it felt to be a part of Carol's social family. Romances started and ended there. Friendships were developed and our communtities learned the news of one another while intersecting with fellow travelers and partyers. Carol learned to make a place for herself in the world and then opened the door to the rest of us to join the celebration. Thanks, Carol! 5 out of 5 stars Pure Pleasure.......2002-01-27

Reading Carol's book was just that; pure pleasure. Real friendships, real pain, inspiring hope no matter what your cross to bear or how lost you might feel. This woman dealt with more eccentric folks and dedicated pals than most of us experience in a life time. Carol holds NOTHING back, so this book is NOT for the fainthearted or those bound by too much social appropriateness...teehee...Heaps of fun!!
This piece would make an incredible and heartwarming movie.

Book Description

Marty Noble describes the many hurdles New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza had to clear in order to reach his current standing as one of the game's top players. Piazza was once a 62nd-round pick in the amateur draft, but definitely made the most of his opportunity. Noble details how Piazza turned himself into a star, and how he hopes to lead the Mets into playoff contention in 1999.

        5 out of 5 stars Get a contact high.......2002-05-20

I've got somebody I'd like you to meet. Reader, this is Stephen Gaskin; Stephen, this is Reader.

Stephen Gaskin is, among other things, one of the founders of The Farm (which is about the only big hippie commune that turns out to have been built to last) and an activist for cannabis legalization. He's usually billed as a "hippie spiritual teacher," which means that listening to him has the power to knock your mind loose from your brain.

And that should clue you in that this book -- originally published in 1980 and republished here with a new foreword by Stephen and a new introduction by Spider Robinson -- is _not_, despite its title, about dope. Stephen himself will tell you that dope is just one means among others and that all of this stuff can be approached in other ways. As for dope itself, Alan Watts and Baba Ram Dass used to say that when you've gotten the message, you should hang up the phone.

If you're worried about the drugs, you should be aware that for the most part the only drugs involved here are cannabis and LSD (plus an occasional bit of peyote and one or two others). Moreover, the book includes lots of cautionary tales about bad trips. And it's not _at all_ about (what I regard as) the really dangerous drugs. (These distinctions are important, especially during today's indiscriminate "war on drugs." Being "anti-drug" is roughly equivalent to being "pro-food.")

So what _is_ the book about? It's about consciousness and religion and getting telepathic, and it's about some things that happened during some of Stephen's trips that hipped him to all of that stuff. More prosaically, it's a transcription of some oral history about the late '60s as delivered in Stephen's unique voice.

You'll like Stephen. And I wasn't kidding when I said he can knock your mind loose from your brain.

The _way_ he tells his stories is as important as the stories themselves. You can read a couple of sample pages and see what I mean; the whole book is like that. He talks from inside the experiences he describes, and these transcriptions make them real for you too, just as if he were sitting there talking to you. He's also pretty self-critical in what he makes of these experiences; pay close attention to his opinions about how hallucinations work and in what sense(s) they may be "real."

Anyway, when you read one of his amazing dope tales, you may find that you've picked up a contact high from Stephen and that you, too, can sometimes see the subconscious on people. If enough of us did this sort of vicarious tripping, it might help us to get telepathic even without taking dope ourselves. That would be a good thing, wouldn't it?

If (like me) you're also a Spider Robinson fan, you'll enjoy his short introduction, which deals with both the significance and the failures of hippie ideals. (Stephen has shown up, sometimes disguised, in several of Spider's books.) And vice versa: if you like this book, you'll probably enjoy Spider's fiction as well.

I was wondering, did you read the title before buying the book?

2 out of 5 stars A Distinct Disappointment; Not Really a Spider Book At All!.......2000-06-06

First off, this book's not even by Spider. I'm not vertain why he lent his name to it, much less wrote the introduction. The book itself is a loosely connected series of ramblings of a proto-typical dope-fiend from the 60's San Francisco scene. It's a bit trippy, and even mildly insightful once is a while, but was certainly not worth picking up if you're expecting anything like the quality of writing and storytelling that Spider Robinson imparts to all of _his_ works.

I read this book with reluctance because seems out of date - it is for version 12.0 (2nd edition of the book). Many people I met asked me my opinion as a statistics software trainer, who often teaches SPSS. I have skimmed it many times, but on my first full read, I was impressed. The version was not a distraction, as the core topics addressed have not changed. It does, however, make use of a couple of new features in 12.0 (version 15.0 was released in fall 2006).

This book knows its audience - undergraduates who are trying to survive a SPSS lab with a small chance of ever seeing Statistics again. This is not to slight the book in anyway. The title and description make this explicit. For the vast majority of university students one required course is all they will see.

As a result, the author wisely spends a number of chapters on setting up SPSS on the assumption that one will be typing from a survey in a university setting. This is done carefully and I am sure that the author wins the loyalty of her readers in these pages. Then, there are about 50 pages on descriptive statistics, and 150 pages on multivariate. The emphasis is clearly on the basics: the fundamentals often get more pages then advanced techniques. This is as it should be. Also, do not use this book to explain all the choices, and all the output in each technique. If you need this - and some do - buy Andy Field's Discovering Statistics Using SPSS. Field's book is also the better choice if this is the first of several statistics courses for you.Discovering Statistics Using SPSS (Introducing Statistical Methods S.) (2nd Edition)

If you have a decent textbook, but need help better understanding it, and you need help in the lab, this is a good choice

                Book Description

"An excellent introduction to using SPSS for data analysis...extremely useful for undergraduate students, and covers a good range of material often not found in competing texts. It provides a self-contained resource itself, with more than simply (detailed and clear) step-by-step descriptions of statistical procedures in SPSS. There is also a wealth of tips and advice, and for each statistical technique a brief, but consistently reliable, explanation is provided." - George Dunbar, University of Warwick

"This book is an excellent addition to the research methods literature. It presents the research process, research strategy and SPSS techniques in manageable steps offering clear advice, useful tips and discussion of relevant issues such as assumptions and effect size...this text is written in an encouraging and supportive style. I believe students will read and learn with this book." - David Cairns, Macquarie University, Australia

The SPSS Survival Manual throws a lifeline to students and researchers grappling with SPSS. Written in a friendly, jargon-free style, it demystifies statistics and data analysis by guiding you through the entire research process and helping you to choose the right statistical technique for your project. From the formulation of research questions, to the design of the study and analysis of data, to reporting the results, Julie Pallant discusses basic and advanced statistical techniques. She outlines each technique clearly, with step-by-step procedures for performing the analysis, a detailed guide to interpreting SPSS output and an example of how to present the results in a report. The user-friendliness of the manual is enhanced by spiral binding which makes it easy to use at a computer. A recommended reading section points the reader towards additional sources of advice. Illustrated with screen grabs, examples of output and tips, and supported by a website (www.openup.co.uk/spss) with sample data and guidelines on report writing, the SPSS Survival Manual can be used by students and researchers at any level alongside any major statistics textbook.

5 out of 5 stars survival for the first-timers.......2005-12-01

this is a great book that is extremely easy to follow for the most ignorant novice. everything is printed out in pictures and written out clearly so it's also good for those less able on the computers. you'll read the book and wonder why you ever had to belabor extremely long equations that never made any sense or try to learn SAS language only to forget the next day.
This is an excellent source for beginners, but once you quickly learn the basics of manipulating the SPSS program, you may soon be prepared for a more advanced version.
In any regards, this is THE source if you're clueless and looking for somewhere to begin

5 out of 5 stars First SPSS book you should buy.......2005-11-01

Good fast, though not very deep, info on how to perform most basic and even many multivariate techniques in SPSS.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Clear and Helpful.......2004-08-30

This is one of the best step-by-step survival guides for statistical analysis I have ever used. Although it needs a little more detail on writing up the results of more advanced techniques like multiple regression, instructions are clear and to the point without a lot of extra "words" that just take time to read but do not add anything helpful. I have already pre-ordered 2 copies of the next edition!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It Got Me an A on the Midterm.......2004-03-30

I was behind in class, I was not "getting it" and I was desperate! So I bought all the SPSS books I could find. Pallant's book is the one I used. Everything I needed to know and be able to do was clearly explained. The accompanying online database served as an example, showing me how to enter data. This book will not go on my bookshelf; it will remain on my desk through my dissertation and afterwards.

                5 out of 5 stars well named.......2004-02-14

This book is exactly what it claims to be a "survival manual". It contains step by step instructions and clear explanations of how to use SPSS, how to interpret the results, and selecting appropriate tests. This isn't a statistics primer or a text on research design. This is a book for those who haven't had 5 stats courses & years of using SPSS. If you need help using SPSS to evaluate research data -- get this book. A lifesaver!
