This self-described "maniac leader" has written a delightful guide to becoming boss, whether it be in business or your own life. In this case, Lorraine Monroe's line of work is public education--and she possesses some pretty impressive credentials. As founder and principal of Harlem's Frederick Douglass Academy, she turned a wreck of a school into an inner-city success story, raising it to a third-place ranking among 180 New York public schools for student achievement. But her down-home tome of inspirational lists, autobiographical anecdotes, and thoughts on leadership transcends the schoolyard. Many of her tenets, collectively called the "Monroe Doctrine," could apply to management in most any field.

Monroe pulls no punches in her passion, even when describing her own life. She takes issue with the best and worst teachers from her own education, and portrays her parents, particularly her father, as imperfect but inspiring individuals as part of a symbolic lesson about adopting the best traits of those who surround you. Written in a wholesome, conversational style, her sound-bite nuggets of advice come across like a collection of Mom's best words of wisdom. "Worthwhile work is rarely done from 9 to 5," she advises. "Avoid people who envy, complain and drain." Her one-woman pep rally ranks up there with Trump: The Art of the Deal and basketball coaching legend Pat Riley's The Winner Within as a recipe for success. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Book Description

In 1991, Dr. Lorraine Monroe founded the Frederick Douglass Academy, a public school in Harlem, in the belief that caring instructors, a disciplined but creative environment, and a refusal to accept mediocrity could transform the lives of inner-city kids. Today the Academy is one of the finest schools of its kind in the country, sending graduates to leading colleges and universities. Monroe succeeded in her experiment by developing a unique leadership method through decades as a teacher and principal in some of America's toughest schools, which she calls the "Monroe Doctrine."

In this plainspoken book, Monroe describes her journey as an educator and the evolution of her understanding of leadership through pithy, memorable rules and observations. She offers spiritual and practical advice on how to create a great school or transform a troubled one - however formidable the obstacles. She also shares her own remarkable life story; one which demonstrates how the vicissitudes of life can become great opportunities for growth and achievement.

4 out of 5 stars Some good ideas, but two things are very offensive about Monroe.......2006-12-27

I am a public school teacher, and I read Nothing's Impossible because my principal attended a conference where she became enchanted with Monroe and her doctrines.
First, the good. Monroe had a very challenging life, and it is impressive what she has done with herself. She was African-American, poor, there were alcohol and abuse issues at home. I also agree that many times you have to, so to speak, ask for forgiveness rather than permission-- education is full of paper-pushing bureaucrats who nay say everything. One has to admire how Monroe turned FDA into a wonderful school to attend or at which to work.
Having said that, however, I must point out that Monroe basically created a charter school. In public schools, you have to try to teach everyone within the school's enrollment boundaries. If we were able to kick out the small but extremely difficult, criminal types, all public schools would be much better. I am glad FDA has done so well-- but comparing FDA to a public is terribly unfair. She hand picked those who may have had challenges but who wanted to learn. That makes a huge difference.
I also found it extremely offensive that Monroe, who had taught, said in her book that there were three types of teachers: the stars, the strugglers, and the incompetent. Every school district has all three, it is true, but what about the thousands of us who aren't struggling ( well, most days) but aren't stars or incompetent? We are not all perfect. I work very hard to be a good teacher. I may never be great, but does that mean I should leave teaching? No.
The Monroe Doctrine is useful to some extent, just as long as you can live with the reservations I have described.

3 out of 5 stars only good for schools.......2005-08-08

Great woman and story and excellent for teachers and principals

I thought there would be a lot of good life lessons 'outside of the classroom' but found there weren't

5 out of 5 stars Leadership , the Key to School Change.......2003-04-13

Dr. Lorraine Monroe is a force to be reckoned with. Tenacious in all aspects, once she discovered who she was and what power she possessed as a leader, there was no turning back.

I choose to read about Dr. Monroe simply from the title of her book Nothing's Impossible and to learn what further lessons I could learn in and outside the classroom. As an administrator, I too believe that nothing is impossible and I was curious to see hear how "a dedicated educator" as Jimmy Carter described "conquered the most overwhelming challenges in life". I was not disappointed. As I read, reread, dog-eared pages highlighted and shared with my colleagues those familiar Monroe Doctrines (witty sayings and profound statements) I continued to believe that perseverance and believing in yourself enough not to back down for what you believe in, is part of the leaders make-up.

Dr. Monroe further encouraged my thinking that sometimes as a leader, it's better to just "do your thing" and ask questions later, even it means getting your hands slapped later.

I would encourage administrators in all lines of work to learn from these lessons, because no matter where you work, those you're working with are `students' in your `classroom' even if it's in the corporate office.

In the final chapter of the book, although the message reverberates all through the book, Monroe brings back the point that leadership is the key to school change. In her words, the message of the leader is "I am here to support you in whatever way you choose, as long as your way improves children's academic and social achievement."

5 out of 5 stars The Enthusiasm Leaps from the Pages.......2001-10-18

Everyone should read this book. I just started it and I am already hooked. The energy and enthusiasm leaps from the pages and "kicks" you into action. Although I am not an educator, I was greatly encouraged as a parent-to-be by this book. Thank you Dr. Monroe for being obedient to God's calling and preparing the way for our future leaders.

5 out of 5 stars The Monroe Doctrine for success !.......2000-12-08

I found about Dr. Lorraine Monroe on 60 minutes. She took one of the worst public schools in Harlem, New York and turned it around to the point that it is one of the top three public schools in New York and 96% of it's students are accepted into college. I believe that her insights and strategies can be used to improve any workplace or organization. Remember, she isn't some theorist - she actually has dramatic results in the real world -under some of the toughest odds imaginable!

She has some great strategies that can help anyone. Here is an example:

"I developed the habit of never asking my superiors at the Board of Education for permission to carry out any innovation or other "risky" venture. I felt that if I asked, they would usually say no. After all, they were cautious, conservative people, interested in keeping their present jobs or moving up within the heirarchy. Taking risks isn't a good way of accomplishing either goal.

.....My supervisor would come to the school for periodic visits, and I'd either tell him about our latest venture or let him see it for himself. I figured that it would be hard, even for a dyed-in-the-wool bureaucrat, to try to stop a program that was already running successfully. This approach worked like a charm; the supervisor was generally pleased to realise that the successful new program, whatever it was, had been started under his administration. As the saying goes. "Success has many parents." When something is working, people are always ready and eager to bless it and share the credit."

Some more of the Monroe Doctrine:

"I learned from Mr. Littwin that it's impossible to run any organization from behind a desk in an office. You've got to walk around, watch people work, schmooze with everyone, and make yourself visible. It's the only way to really know what's going on and to have a true impact on the operation."

Pick up this book to get some inspiration on how you can make a dramatic difference in your organization.

A sequel of sorts to Reeve's bestselling memoir, Still Me, Nothing is Impossible is a concise, meditative companion to the earlier book. Each of its nine chapters is devoted to some aspect of successful living (humor, faith, hope) or addresses a major life issue (parenting, religion, recovery). Although Reeve draws on his experiences prior to his spinal chord injury in 1995, it's clear that his views on life have evolved dramatically in the seven years since. Clearly of most obvious value to those facing the challenges of physical paralysis, this book also serves as inspirational primer for otherwise able-bodied individuals who may be thwarted by mental rather than physical wounds. In additional to his personal message, Reeve is also a blunt proponent of medical insurance reform and government research funding, devoting a chapter to it here, as well as a significant portion of his nonprofit Web site, christopherreeve.org. --David Bombeck

Book Description

Christopher Reeve has mastered the art of turning the impossible into the inevitable. In these candid reflections, Reeve shows that we are all capable of overcoming seemingly insurmountable hardships. He teaches us that for able-bodied people, paralysis is a choice—a choice to live with self-doubt and a fear of taking risks—and that it is not an acceptable one. Reeve knows from experience that the work of conquering inner space is hard and that it requires some suffering—after all, nothing worth having is easy to attain. He asks challenging questions about why it seems so difficult—if not impossible—for us to work together as a society. Nothing Is Impossible reminds us that life is not to be taken for granted but to be lived fully with zeal, curiosity, and gratitude.

Download Description

"So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable. If we can conquer outer space, we can conquer inner space, too."

Christopher Reeve has mastered the art of turning the impossible into the inevitable. In Nothing Is Impossible, the author of the bestselling autobiography Still Me shows that we are all capable of overcoming seemingly insurmountable hardships. He interweaves anecdotes from his own life with excerpts from speeches and interviews he's given and with evocative photos taken by his son Matthew.

Reeve teaches us that for able-bodied people, paralysis is a choice -- a choice to live with self-doubt and a fear of taking risks -- and that it is not an acceptable one. Reeve knows from experience that the work of conquering inner space is hard and that it requires some suffering -- after all, nothing worth having is easy to get. He asks challenging questions about why it seems so difficult -- if not impossible -- for us to work together as a society. He steers the reader gently, offering his reflections and guidance but not the pat answers that often characterize inspirational works.

Published on the eve of both his fiftieth birthday and the seventh anniversary of his spinal cord injury, Christopher Reeve's Nothing Is Impossible reminds us that life is not to be taken for granted but to be lived fully with zeal, curiosity, and gratitude. That is a powerful message in itself, but it is the messenger who gives it its full resonance.

5 out of 5 stars What a Superman Christopher Reeves turned out to be!.......2007-07-26

Christopher Reeves will continue to be an inspirtion to all of us, and will influence other genertions with his insight, and courge, of trying to make the public more aware of Spinal Cord Injuries.
He was indeed, a 'real Superman!'
God Bless his family for allowing us all to know him better.

5 out of 5 stars God I miss this man........2006-06-17

I just reread this book, and it brought back how much I admired Mr. Reeve and his bride. I really think this should be required reading to anyone that has had a spinal injury, or an amputation, just to show them that they are NOT the first to feel all these negitive feelings.

A wonderful tribute to the Reeves in general.

4 out of 5 stars Reeves writes with passion and compassion about hope.......2006-05-10

In this little book, Christopher Reeve principally seeks to show the value of hope. He talks about the surprising progress he made in recovering as a quadriplegic after a terrible accident. (Long after doctors believed recovery was possible, Reeve began to show improved movement.) He also talks at length about the politicization of stem cell research and how that has likely stymied further progress on relieving many human disabilities. Despite his clear feelings on the issue, Reeve is sympathetic to people with deep religious reasons for opposing stem cell research, just not those who do so as political posturing.

Along the way, Reeve talks about his brush with Scientology (a fascinating glimpse of a religion that's been so much in the news), his other religious searchings, his initial thoughts of ending his life after his accident, how he and his family have dealt with his quadriplegia, and his work as an advocate for health research.

This is a quick and enjoyable read. Reeve's insights on the nature and role of hope will be strengthening to people who struggle with any of a range of issues from physical to emotional to spiritual. Reeve himself reads the unabridged audio CD version; I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......2005-01-25

I picked up this book at my school's library and started glancing through it. It's possibly one of the most motivational and inspirational books I've seen! Reeve recounts all of his trials and how he learned to function again. Throughout it all, he stayed strong with his wife Dana, who supported him through everything. A must read!

5 out of 5 stars I am sad.......2005-01-09

Christopher Reeve died almost 3 months ago i am researching him and he fell off the horse and still survived and even though he was real hurt alot he cared of other people he was a good athlete and especially actor. He was a huge survivor.

5 out of 5 stars The Awesome Power Of The Holy Spirit.......2007-03-05

People often don't understand that the Holy Spirit is the powerhouse of Christianity and that He is the one that heals. This book was so amazing and I actually felt the presence of the Holy Spirit as I read each word. Excellent, Awesome, Amazing, and Extraordinary are words that don't fully explain what God can and does still do.

    5 out of 5 stars Twenty Testimonies.......2003-05-20

First printed in 1974 at the height of Miss Kuhlman's fame (due to the television series 'I Believe in Miracles' and the Miracle Services held live throughout the US at that time), this is a series of testimonies of unusual healings credited to the direct touch of the Holy Spirit. Miss Kuhlman believed in Dispensational end-time teachings and it was her personal belief that the healings surrounding her ministry were connected to a final move of the Holy Spirit before the physical Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Whatever the future holds, the healings were certainly monumental in the lives of these individuals and one can detect, in the accounts, the unfathomable moving of God's plan and purpose.

Since taking over an embattled basketball program at the University of Cincinnati in 1989, Bob Huggins has inspired almost as many debates as victories. He has returned the team to its heritage as a national power, taken the school to the Final Four and Elite Eight, and earned so much respect that he was almost swept away by an offer from the NBA's Miami Heat. Yet, for all his accomplishments, he cannot escape the controversy and questions about his style.

                Book Description

"Most of the Directors I've worked with needed someone to talk to who is deep inside the heart of the movie."--Mick Audsley, Film Editor
Film editing is understood by the industry to be one of the most crucial contributions to film-making. World-class British editors such as Antony Gibbs and Anne Coates have received recognition of their importance in Hollywood and experienced British Editors have important roles in a surprising number of major American movies . This book attempts to explain this mot elusive of roles by allowing editors to describe in their own words what they do and to bring them into the critical and public spotlight.
It is the most comprehensive survey of its kind to date and is based upon interviews with many distinguished editors who have worked on films as diverse as Blade Runner and Carry on Up the Khyber, Die Hard 2 and Blow Up , American Beauty and Performance. The British Film Editor also provides a detailed history of editing, together with extensive filmographies.

                  Book Description

                  Amores, secretos y verdades . . .

Mulholland provides illustrated instructions for mastering scores of magical feats: card tricks relying on an easy memory device, extemporaneous tricks such as making a coin vanish and then reappear in a bread roll, tricks for entertaining youngsters, magical thought transference, and other exploits of mystifying wizardry.

                          5 out of 5 stars A must-read from magic's best writer.......2004-01-11

John Mulholland, who ghost-wrote for Houdini, edited "The Sphinx" magazine for years, and even trained early post-WWII U.S. spies in the art of deception, brings his analytical eye and knack for phrasing to the subject of performing magic. Here you will find some of Mulholland's signature routines, which established him as one of the first to adopt a professorial "lecturer" character.

Mulholland takes us on a journey around a magical world in which handkerchiefs change color by thought alone, Buddha migrates, and the Devil sends letters to magicians containing articles form the pockets of the audience! This is material that will enchant the most sophisticated, urbane and jaded audiences.

The trick descriptions are fully detailed, the mechanics ingenius; but the real jewels are the scripts. Today's magic writers would do well to study the thoroughness with which Mulholland teaches this material. He really wants you to perform these pieces and perform them well.

Perhaps the best testament I can give is twofold. First, Mulholland was a big influence on Henry Hay, author of "The Amateur Magician's Handbook" (another must-read). Second, one of the routines in this book went into my show when I was twelve, and is still there, some three decades later. That's how good this book is.

I'm a DBA and needed to understand a few technologies about SANs and I had no where to look, until I read the reviews about this book on Amazon and decided to trust most of the reviewers and boy were they right. Excellent, excellent material delivered in a way that non-storage Admins would understand. I wish it wasn't put under the 'Dummies' series though.

5 out of 5 stars I was very happy and so was my HP SAN teacher.......2007-02-13

I read this book just before taking an HP SAN training class and before this book I knew Zero about SAN; after I not only understood the class, I understood it well. I told my teacher I was going to try to take the snia exam and he looked through the book and said it was written well and covered most if not all of the important material.

5 out of 5 stars Taught Us Enough to Decide We Didn't Want One.......2007-01-13

A very good book on SANs, but needs to be upgraded. For instance in one place it says that you shouldn't set up a SAN if you don't need more than 10 GB of storage. I don't think you can buy hard drives that small, this probably needs upgrading to something like a 1000 GB of storage. ==That sentence was one in a section that talks about reasons to not use a SAN. I found this section to have excellent advice. And by following their advice we made the decision to not put in a SAN at all. By making this decision, the twenty bucks or so that this book cost was saved many, many times over. ==We, like I suspect, a lot of companies had a problem with data storage and someone said, 'put in a SAN.' So we started talking to SAN salesmen who certainly agreed with that suggestion. After reading this book we knew a lot more about the technology, about SANs; we knew the questions to ask and eventually even the SAN salesmen had to agree that we didn't need one. ==If you want to learn about SANs, or if you've all of a sudden been charged with getting one up and running, I recommend you start with this book. It's clear, it is descriptive, it covers the area, except as stated above, it is a bit dated.

4 out of 5 stars Great for storage concepts .......2007-01-10

I had very little experience with storage before reading this book. Now I feel that I've been properly armed with the basics such that I could dig into an environment and know pretty much what's going on and would be able to draw up an architecture diagram from what I'd be able to learn looking at switches and such. Definitely a good primer for those with little to no storage experience.
