He was more than just the "Father of the Hearing Aid".......2000-01-25
This excellent publication chronicles the life of Hugh S. Knowles (LF). From his meager and violent beginnings as a youth living in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution to his death in 1988.
Born in Iowa in 1904, Knowles spent most of his youth in Mexico in the midst of the Revolution. Even during his youth he exhibited great abilities, which led to his graduation from high school at the age of fourteen. His stint in the Merchant marines was a maturing experience, and the beginning of his career as an engineer. His college years almost proved to be too much, as he was talking a full course load each semester while holding done two jobs. His marriage to Josephine proved to be his true soul mate and a remarkable woman herself. She toiled endlessly throughout her entire life to support the family and his companies. Her untimely death at an early age left Hugh and his children devastated.
As Hugh traveled through life, he had a sincere interest in not only technology, but also the people he dealt with. He was a perfectionist, who always insisted on overseeing the development of produced by Knowles Electronics. He had a personable side to him, as was well respected by not only his peers, but other individuals that he encountered in life. His final years with wife Nancy were reflective.
The book nicely mixes personal/family history with technology, explaining Hugh's invention in a manner understandable to the non-engineer. Susan Goodwillie gives us in-site into Hugh's fascination with the invention of the transistor and his understanding of its importance and future applications.

Customer Reviews:
Great Baseball Book!.......2006-10-28
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought the author did a marvelous job of capturing the essence of Rogers Hornsby's personality, warts and all. By the time I finished it, I felt that I really knew what Hornsby was like.
I also had a small personal connection to Hornsby that served to increase my enjoyment of this book. When I was ten years old in 1960, living in the Chicago suburb of Lincolnwood, my grandfather, who was retired and living with my family, somehow became friends with Rogers Hornsby. What was the one common interest that brought these two guys together? You guessed it - playing the horses! Almost everyday, from the time they met in 1960 until Hornsby died in 1963, he would drive his car to our house, and then ride together with my grandfather in my grandfather's car to Arlington Park Race Track. Knowing of my love for baseball even at the age of ten, my grandfather introduced me to Mr. Hornsby and even had him sign a baseball for me - unfortunately long since lost! I also spoke to him numerous times on the phone when he called our house.
Mr. Alexander makes it vividly clear that, other than his love for baseball, the major constant in Hornsby's live was his addiction to playing the horses. It's now very clear to me why these two old codgers became fast friends - their love of horseracing.
An Outstanding Biography of Baseball's Greatest Right-Handed Hitter.......2006-07-15
This is an outstanding biography of the hitting machine, Rogers Hornsby, perhaps the greatest right-handed hitter in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB). The story that Charles C. Alexander tells explores the rise and fall of this remarkable baseball player, an individual who could work magic on the diamond but had real difficulty off of it.
Signed out of Texas to the St. Louis Cardinals, he had a "cup-of-coffee" with the team at the end of the 1915 season, hitting a measly .246. Hardly a stellar debut, but after working hard all winter the next year Hornsby made the Cardinals and batted .313 while becoming the everyday second baseman. He went on to compile a career batting average of .358 and established the highest single season batting average when he hit .424 for the Cards in 1924. Indeed, from 1921-1925, Rogers' overall batting average was .402, a truly amazing accomplishment. In 1925 Hornsby became player-manager of the Cardinals and the next year his team captured its first National League pennant by edging Cincinnati in the final week of the season after an August spurt had shot them into pennant contention. The season was made perfect by the Cards' first victory in the World Series, coming at the expense of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and the rest of the New York Yankees.
Always an abrasive force on the Cardinals, the year after his World Series success the owner shipped him off to the New York Giants for Frankie Frisch and Jimmy Ring. It was only the first time in which Hornsby's personality led to adversity for him. But there was room for only one massive ego on the Giants and within a short time manager John J. McGraw shipped him to the Boston Braves. From there he went to the Chicago Cubs, back to the Cardinals, and then to the St. Louis Browns. He finally retired in 1937. Hornsby lived another 26 years after retiring from MLB, always hovering around the fringes of it but never truly a part of it. He eventually died in 1963, bitter about his fate.
Charles C. Alexander is an outstanding historian, the author of several other books on baseball as well as on other subjects. This is a superb addition to his path-breaking series of studies on a range of subjects.
OK, as far as it goes.......2001-05-11
This is the third book I've read by Alexander, which I suppose is evidence that his books are readable.
In the end they all share the same strengths and weaknesses.
For a straightforward narrative of the key points of Hornsby's career and life, this is perfectly OK.
But the book really stays on the surface. For example, there is never any in-depth discussion of techniques of batting or fielding. It's like reading a book on Napoleon without finding anything about the nature of warfare in the period.
Also, there is very little meangingful discussion of Hornsby's relative baseball greatness. Alexander doesn't need to become a zealous SABRmetrician, but some basic statistics about Hornsby and others (beyond saying what the average batting average for the league was in a given year) seems called for. Alexander doesn't even include a table or appendix with Hornsby's basic statistics.
I've given this 3 stars, because for the general reader it's OK. If I were rating it as serious history, I'd give it a 1. You come away from this book unaware that there have been lots of serious books written about baseball and its relation to society. Alexander's attempts to provide historical context are embarassing--on the order of, "The same continued hot, dry weather than made the Great Plains a Dust Bowl was present on Opening Day 1936 [my paraphrase, to be honest]".
In short, there is the same strain of intellectual laziness in this book that I saw in his others.
Good effort on a colorless character.......2000-06-14
Alexander captures Hornsby and his times perfectly. While not as readable as the author's previous "Ty Cobb", this is due more to Hornsby's general colorlessness than in Alexander's writing. As enigmatic as Hornsby was, Alexander does a great job in telling the life of the man who hit for the highest average in the 20th century.
Most Complete on Hornsby.......2000-05-03
Mr. Alexander extensivly researched the life of Rogers Hornsby. This book represents the fruit of his labor. The book can get dry in places while describing Hornsby's on field achievements-letting the feats speak for themselves; just as Hornsby would have wanted it. This is hardly a flaw for those who want to know the truth and not the myth of the best righthanded hitting machine EVER.
While not hated like Ty Cobb, Hornsby certianly had just as few friends. He was cold, short with people, humorless and offensivly blunt. His personality got him traded, fired, divorced and shunned. Alexander doesn't try to add personality where Hornsby didn't have one. He let Hornsby's baseball tunnel vision be the focus. Blunt- just like Hornsby.

Book Description
Rogers Hornsby has the highest career batting average of any right-handed hitter and the second highest career mark overall. "The Rajah" won seven batting titles and hit over .400 three times. He was also one of baseball's most successful player-managers, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a historic World Series triumph over the Yankees in 1926. Hornsby had an unrivaled passion for baseball; as a young player, he once even donned a disguise to play in a women's league. But his unyielding drive to succeed often alienated him from lesser players, and his penchant for the racetrack made him powerful enemies in baseball's higher ranks. Jonathan D'Amore presents a fascinating look at this outstanding hitter and complicated man. It has been said that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing in professional sports. Baseball's All-Time Greatest Hitters presents biographies on Greenwood's selection for the 12 best hitters in Major League history, written by some of today's best baseball authors. These books present straightforward stories in accessible language for the high school researcher and the general reader alike. Each volume includes a timeline, bibliography, and index. In addition, each volume includes a "Making of a Legend" chapter that analyses the evolution of the player's fame and (in some cases) infamy.

Book Description
This is a book dedicated to helping individuals achieve their potential. It does so by presenting the general background that we are operating from as physical, emotional, and spiritual beings. With this as a foundation, the authors draw from their many years as teachers in the field of mind/body disciplines to lay the means for us to make changes in our lives. We are brought face to face with the ways our physical use of ourselves, our indulgence in negative emotions, our rigid belief systems, our habitual or addictive tendencies, and our preoccupation with the past and future impede the flow of energy. Practical exercises are given at the end of each chapter to give us an experiential knowledge of each subject area. A variety of potential energy tools such as yoga, meditation, martial arts (both internal arts such as tai chi chuan and external arts such as karate), chi kung, and the Alexander Technique are described, allowing us to choose a path that feels suited to our individual needs. We are told of the importance of and given methods for relaxation, proper breathing, creative visualization, and living in the present moment. There is hardly any area left untouched that has to do with increasing personal energy and the resultant benefits. The approach here is a unifying one. It treats the mind/body dichotomy as an artificial one that is responsible for much of our dis-ease. Too often, different aspects of our personalities are seeking different goals, causing internal conflict and stress. This takes its toll on our health, and blocks the attainment of whatever goals have been set. Becoming more aware, more conscious of our own internal and external mechanisms, is shown to be a necessary ingredient in making lasting and meaningful changes. With each step taken in this process more energy becomes available, giving us a greater potential in our lives for both happiness and love. This can lead to a positive spiral of energy that opens a universe of possibilities.

A lucid guide for an intriguing journey.......1998-12-03
Philosophers from Lao Tsu to Korzybski have used a heap of words to remind us that books function only as maps and should never be confused with the territory. For readers who have a strong desire to venture into realms which are both ancient and new, "Energy" presents a lucid guide for an intriguing journey. Reading this book is a trip that can be pleasurable and profitable. In a style that is illuminating yet accessible, "Energy" sets forth the universal rules to what Robert DeRopp called 'a game worth playing.' "Energy" provides you with the "ki" to the hidden Upper Room, then says, "Your move."

Book Description
This book presents a unique opportunity to read many original source materials written by authors representing diverse points of view and a broad spectrum of history in the field of education. It offers a personal philosophical perspective on the work of teaching; the function of schools in our society; and the relationships between education and productivity. Unlike most introductions to the profession, the issues raised in this book bring readers face-to-face with themselves and with the challenging dilemmas they will confront as teachers. It provides exceptional coverage of community and the changing social, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic landscape of our society and its impact on schools, children, and teaching. In addition, the book answers the following questions: What are the relationships between culture, society, and education?, What are the dynamics of daily life in schools as institutions in particular organizational and community contexts?, In what ways are gender, language, culture, race, social class, and the relationship between school and work important to education?, and What orientations and strategies can teachers adopt that will enable them to become more transformative educators? For individuals contemplating a career in teaching.

Awesome anthology of essays!.......2007-07-05
Sometimes a little recondite, this book is an awesome report on the disparities between socioeconomic educational experiences. The essays that showed the dichotomy beween the lower and upper economic classes really made me reflect on my own education and its impact on my current economic living situation. It is a profound resource for teachers who strive to understand the expectations and education stratified through American educational institutions.

Great compilations deserve volume numbers in the title.......2000-04-18
These great compilations need to have the volume number in the title and in the description. When I wanted to find volume 52, I had to search through every book after November 1996, because I knew that the "CLINTON ELECTED" puzzle was in volume 52.
Here's the pointer for #52, by the way. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0812931645/recommendations
If you look at the clues, you'll see that the puzzle also predicted "BOB DOLE ELECTED" so it's a historic puzzle.
These books are great, but I have a suggestion, too.......2000-04-18
If you love crosswords, get these books.
I do suggest, though, that Amazon include the volume number in each title, so that a person who wants to find volume 52, for example, doesn't have to read every page.
By the way, I had a reason for mentioning volume 52 ... The #1 puzzle in that volume predicted Clinton's Win over Gore in the Election Day 1996 puzzle.
You can find #52 ...
Be sure to get that one, then buy the rest of the books for the puzzle lover in your family.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK UNLESS ALL YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT IS THE TORQUE ENGINE. TORQUE.

It is NOT "all in one" it is "Torque in one". Torque. Torque is all this this dude talks about. He's completely & utterly obsessed with Torque. He should marry the freakin' engine.
3D Game Scripting with the Torque Engine is what this book should be called, because that is ALL this book is about. Torque. The title is completely misleading. I was highly disappointed with this book. Torque.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Writing Style.......2007-09-16
As a retired computer application trainer as well as a programming teacher, I find this book superior to MANY computer books of most ANY genre. Unfortunately many "techies" suffer from some deficits as writers.
First, though they may know their content very well, when they begin writing about their subject, they tend to skip steps that will confound a beginning learner or assume some nebulous prior knowledge or what must seem to them as perfectly "obvious" information or sequences. Mr. Finney doesn't make this all-to-often made error. He also follows the tried-and-true educational practice of - "Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them". It allows the reader to feel the scope as well as the details of what's being taught.
Second the writing style is very relaxed. The reader doesn't need to feel that they are learning in a large lecture hall. The style is person-to-person.
Third, He writes in English. That is to say, the writing is grammatical and well organized. That might seem like how things SHOULD be. I've found many technical writers simply don't - or can't do this! It seems to be well edited. Homonyms haven't snuck in because the words could pass by a spell checker. His early English teachers must have cracked his knuckles to develop this trait. (I keep wanting to write publishers to ask them if they would like me to do a final edit before they put their books on the street. It's embarassing to us as a culture. OK, I'll get off my soap-box.) This book is refreshing.
I got both volumes of Mr. Finney's books for my grown son, since he is interested in going into this field. I think he'll get them when I'm done. More than likely, I'll end up getting an addutional set for him. I want to keep these!
Keep up the good work, Ken!!
Very Good Book.......2007-08-24
I think the only thing this book does wrong is clarify it is not for noobs and that you should have read the first book to know what is really going on. This a great book for A. Mid Level Programmers or B. Very Persistent Beginners. :0) It's far better than the forum and helps you pinpoint what you need; else you wouldn't know what to look for.
If you have Torque, get this book
Not a Beginners Guide?.......2007-02-02
You will find the on-line documentation at Garage Games more helpful.
A beginners guide it is not. Code is too buggy.
A Torque reference? Not exactly. It tells you what tools you can use with the Torque engine but the Torque parts themselves are to buggy especially if you are new to programming.
The code very seldom works without tweaking. You better have programming knowledge if you want to tweak the bad code.
It is good as a general reference book for people who want to know what kind of tools to use for programming and what are some of the components for developing a game.
Can you go from start to finish and develop a working demo from the book or one of your own? Not unless you are an intermediate to advanced programmer.
where is my sttuf?.......2007-01-22
I did not receive the book. I would like to know what is happening.
