            Book Description

Of the 256 players, managers, and executives in the Hall of Fame, the names we know well—Ty Cobb, Connie Mack, Willie Mays—account for a small minority. But all other members of the Hall of Fame were celebrated in their day, or else by baseball historians in the days since. Yet most fans know little about these men.

This book contains biographical and statistical information on 16 previously overlooked Hall of Famers, including Morgan G. Bulkeley, Candy Cummings, Roger Bresnahan, Jack Chesbro, Jesse Burkett, Kid Nichols, Bobby Wallace, John Clarkson, Elmer Flick, Eppa Rixey, Jake Beckley, Roger Connor, Vic Willis, Willie Wells, Frank Selee, and Bid McPhee. These men, selections of the oft-criticized Veterans Committee, all enjoyed remarkable careers—and were themselves remarkable stories, as the author discovered.

5 out of 5 stars Dig deeper than Cobb, Wagner, Matty, and Walter Johnson.......2005-02-14

David Fleitz is a first-rate baseball biographer and researcher. This is an excellent book, first of all for its sixteen meaty, yet concise, biographies of baseball stars from just after the the Civil War to the first decades of the 1900s. It also provides condensed bits of general baseball history, and insight into how the Hall of Fame went about selecting its more obscure, but usually worthy, honorees.

The pages simply fly by--each bio is a gem. The highlights for me are the pieces on gentle NY Giant star Roger Connor, and the story of the first curveballer (and his rivals to that claim), Candy Cummings. The story of Negro (and Mexican) Leaguer Willie Wells is also compelling. And executive Morgan G. Bulkeley may not much of a Hall of Famer, but he sure led a fascinating public life outside of baseball.

I wonder what Mr. Fleitz will come up with next...

            5 out of 5 stars 16 Forgotten Men.......2004-07-26

Very good book filling in the gaps of those men who are in the Hall of Fame and no one knows who they are or why they are there. For you baseball historians you need this book to fill out your knowledge. The bad news is that there are more than 16 that Mr Fleitz could write about. How about a Volume 2 and Volume 3?

              Book Description

In a world where more people know who Princess Di was than who their own senators are, where Graceland draws more visitors per year than the White House, and where Michael Jordan is an industry unto himself, fame and celebrity are central currencies. In this intriguing book, Tyler Cowen explores and elucidates the economics of fame.

Fame motivates the talented and draws like-minded fans together. But it also may put profitability ahead of quality, visibility above subtlety, and privacy out of reach. The separation of fame and merit is one of the central dilemmas Cowen considers in his account of the modern market economy. He shows how fame is produced, outlines the principles that govern who becomes famous and why, and discusses whether fame-seeking behavior harmonizes individual and social interests or corrupts social discourse and degrades culture.

Most pertinently, Cowen considers the implications of modern fame for creativity, privacy, and morality. Where critics from Plato to Allan Bloom have decried the quest for fame, Cowen takes a more pragmatic, optimistic view. He identifies the benefits of a fame-intensive society and makes a persuasive case that however bad fame may turn out to be for the famous, it is generally good for society and culture.

3 out of 5 stars Too academic for me.......2004-11-13

I've always been fascinated with what being famous does to a person's life but there are surprisingly few intelligent books on the subject. This one comes sorta close but the guy's an economics professor so everything is seen through that lens. There are some really engaging ideas here but overall it was pretty dense reading and kinda dull.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening.......2004-02-05

I enjoyed this book very much and it was especially interesting to realize how many of us use celebrities for our own needs.

4 out of 5 stars The Real "New Economy".......2000-10-28

With a simple conceit, the application of microeconomic theory to the culture of celebrity, Cowen generates fresh insight into the rising proliferation of stars and heroes in our world. By erecting an economic platform from which look at the phenomenon, he is able to stand apart from the usual moralizing approach taken by cultural critics. This is not to say he doesn't consider the views of both cultural optimists and pessimists in his discussion. Indeed, he writes a history of cultural pessimists and optimists starting with the Greeks. However,by giving us a new place to stand and a new perspective from which to examine fame and its pursuit, he performs a valuable service.

Cowen's view of 'fame markets' is in his own words 'largely optimistic,' a view based on the notion that 'markets increase the supply of star performances and the supply of fame with remarkable facility.' At the same time he is well aware that fame markets do not necessarily reward the virtuous. In his own words, he notes "modern fame removes the luster from societal role models" and "intense media scrutiny makes almost all individuals look less meritorious." He points out that media seeks profits, promoting images that will attract viewers, not images that "support the dignity of office."

What stands out in this 'economic' view of fame is Cowen's belief that the past efforts of highly visible reformers and moral and religious leaders have borne fruit to the extent that we as a society no longer need them as much as in the past. It is his contention that moral leaders are more spread among us as compared to earlier times when such leaders occupied high stations in the fame pantheon. This lower visibility of moral leaders, he believes, creates the incorrect perception of a society without moral leadership.

A pithy and enjoyable book whose great strength and only failing is its narrowness of focus. The celebrities we choose say something more about us than this relentlessly economic view would suggest.

GURPS is a great game system but much of the time the books are sourcebooks that have to be used with the Basic Set. Not this book. Not only does it have the history of the war, reviews on the nations and armies, vehicle-design system, alternate history ideas and details about what's happening behind the front lines it also has a new version of the GURPS Lite rules. This is all you need to play a game set in World War Two (unless you wish to get other titles or cool maps and stuff).
I would suggest getting players who know the history of World War Two. Otherwise they might get a tad confused.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom Fighters rejoice.......2002-10-29

GURPS: World War Two is the beginning of an ambitious campaign by Steve Jackson Games to bring the battles of World War Two to life for gamers. And it makes a wonderful starting point.

It seems hard to believe that there are only six chapters in this book - but there is quite a lot of detail in these chapters. Beginning with "The World At War" this chapter explains the background for a World War Two style campaign. It covers a lot of world history in a good capsule format that GM's may want to read thoroughly for campaign ideas. "The Combatants", gives a comprehensive section on the major players in the war, both on the winning side and the losing side. "Characters" gives you everything you need to create player characters and NPC's for a WWII campaign. The character templates in this section give GM's a quick starting point. The "Armoury" chapter gives your characters some weapons to fight with, as well as a basic equipment list. The "Vehicles" section adds many cars, trucks, and tanks to your WWII campaign. In "Move Out!" there's campaigning info for players and GM's. There's even some ideas for crossover campaigns and alternate endings for the war. Finally, for those who may not own the basic rules, the book concludes with a copy of "GURPS: Lite" - a basic intro to the GURPS RPG for those who may not own the basic book. This edition of GURPS Lite has been custom tailored for GURPS: World War Two.

The 28 pages of detail about the course of the war is not to be missed, and can even be appreciated by non-gamers for its attention to important events in World War Two such as the sinking of the Bismark. The 20 pages of details on Britain, the US, the Soviets, Germany and Japan give us an inside look at the organization of armies, units and tactics, special ops, and intelligence, although it's easy to see that this could be expanded. The 23 pages of info on characters is fairly comprehensive and includes 14 sample characters. The 36 pages of detail on vehicles gives some of the major equipment used in the war, as well as ideas on how to use what you know to create totally new equipment that may not have been covered in this section. The 16 pages of "Move Out" even includes info on what might be happening on the home front, as well as what is happening behind enemy lines. The "Basic Training" section of GURPS Lite allows GM's that don't have the basic rules to create military and non-military characters and NPC's for this campaign.

This book is a great starting place for GM's, and that is probably its only flaw. When covering a subject as large as World War Two, you have to have space - and even the 208 pages of material here are not enough for a comprehensive look at World War Two. However, there are other books already printed continuing the series, and more forthcoming. I can't recommend "GURPS World War Two: Iron Cross" highly enough for GM's wanting to "fill in the blanks". This book is a great addition to the GURPS library and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to try an adventure or a whole campaign set in this time of peril.

The book is filled with info, but it "focuses" on the digital SLR, rather than the point and shoot. There should have been a warning in the description. It's still useful.

This book is huge and covers most anything one can think of on this topic. I bought it for my husband who has recently acquired a digital camera. He hasn't begun to even scratch the surface but has already found it helpful and knows it will as he tries new things.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginner through expert.......2007-01-17

I'm a beginning digital photographer and not particularly techno- proficient, yet I've been able to understand the information in the early chapters of the book. As I get more proficient and curious, I will be able to delve into the later chapters and learn about photoediting, etc. This book really represents 7 different digital camera for Dummies books.

I got this book for the great price of $9.67 from CBC-Sales, and it is worth every penny. If you are a beginner in digital photography who hopes to increase your photography skills, then this book is for you.

This book is a delight for me, an amateur photographer! It is very well written and has lots of great illustrations. The author covers complex information with basic, easy to understand explanations and subtle humor make it more entertaining. Along with useful information about expensive photography equipment for best results, I really appreciate that he offers simple and inexpensive means to achieve the same professional results.

5 out of 5 stars 7 in 1 has it all. A total encyclopedia in one........2006-02-19

This is truly an excllent reference book. I was in the process of buying a scanner and upgrading a digital camera. It was helpful on both counts.

A great reference as well as instruction book.
Only one suggestion I would make to the author when he updates.
Explain the pro's and con's about 3 or 4 in one machines. For instance is the scanning as good as a stand alone scanner.

All in all a wonderful investment. Makes my other books on the subject obsolete.

You might consider Photoshop Elements to be Photoshop CA Lite. The price for Elements is very light when compared with Photoshop. Checking Amazon's price for Photoshop CS - $575.99, and Photoshop Elements is $84.99. In my view, probably wrong, I consider that Elements is what Photoshop was a couple of revisions ago. It is probably not really the several year old code, but Photoshop CS code that has had a few features removed. If you're a full fledged professional whose livelyhood depends on software, buy the high priced version. If you're really only an advanced (even very advanced) amateur, save the money. Elements has grown so that it is really quire powerful.

This book is written with the assumption that you know very little about digital photograph editing. It starts with the very simple, i.e. installing and making Elements work on your PC. From there is progresses to every more sophisticated, ever more complex techniques.

It's an interesting cross between a tutorial, step-by-step book and a reference book. If you're starting out on Elements, this would be an excellent place to begin your journey.
