On page 212 the book asserts "Only five B-307s were built" and "... after the war, when the improved B-307B model, christened the Stratoliner and reequipped with tricycle landing gear, became available ..." Both statements are inaccurate.
Ten Boeing 307s were built, one crashed and Howard Hughes took one from TWA's allocation of six. Pan Am took delivery of three designated S-307, TWA bought five designated SA-307B. Howard Hughes' was built with larger engines and designated SB-307B. After the war, TWA's were rebuilt and designated SA-307B-1. None ever had a tricycle landing gear. Also, did the author not know that Pan Am owned three of these interesting landplanes, capable of crossing the Atlantic in 1942 with a useful payload?
For accurate information about this era I recommend the books of R. E. G Davies.

Book Description

Have you ever wondered what it feels like:

to be stuck in a tornado?

“[It] is exactly the feel of a freight train approaching—that low, ever-louder howl and the shuddering ground.”

to participate in an orgy?

“And all the while, the thought that keeps going through your mind (and through the cab ride home, and into breakfast the next day): ‘I’m at an orgy! I’m at an orgy!’”

to have a severe stutter?

“The thing is, there’s a disconnect thing between my mind and my tongue. My mind’s processing a thousand words a minute, and the tongue is only squeezing out ten or twelve.”

to be a mob hitman?

“It’s nerve-racking. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. Anybody who’s any good at this is concentrating with every nerve in their body, trying to get it done right and trying not to get caught.”

to be 105 years old?

“I was born in 1897 and I’ve seen a lot in the world. I’ve seen everything there is to see. You look back and tell yourself, ‘What have I been doing all these years?’”

If these tidbits whet your appetite for real, first-person accounts of some of life’s most exhilarating, harrowing, or downright strange experiences, then you’ll be sucked in by Esquire Presents: What It Feels Like. Collected by the ever-curious editors of Esquire magazine, here are more than fifty gripping tales—straight from the mouths of the people who’ve lived them.

We all know about the kinds of things you'll find in this little book.Fortunately, most of us have not actually experienced them....at least not yet.
Being gored by a bull, shot in the head, caught in a volcano, attacked by a Grizzly bear, attacked by Killer bees,do Heroin,be an Albino,be really short, change from a man to a woman, live to 105,go on a hunger strike, get hit by lightning, be buried in an avalance and survive; along with over 40 more experiences are all described by people who actually experienced them.I think the one that surprised me most was the enjoyable experience with death and return. Then ,the person who told of this experience was a spiritual consultant ;could there be a conflict of interest here? We'll all get to experience this one sometime, but I doubt if anyone is in a big hurry! Being a man,I guess I'll have to take the woman's word for how it feels to give birth.
I would, however, like to try the experience of winning a Lottery;not for the money, mind you ,just the experience. If you believe that, maybe you'll believe I'd like to experience an exorcism.
A fun book to kill an hour or so.

Everything all the previous reviews said were true of my reading experience, "Bon Bon Journalism", with the exception of "If this is your idea of humor, you're definitely sick, June 27, 2004 Reviewer: A reader".

If "A reader" thinks the book is "sick" then maybe they read a couple of the accounts just after eating: Which one would know by reading the title that you would not read them right before or right after a meal if you're you have a sensitive stomach. (Same idea if you like Medical Miracle, ER, X-files, Law&Order - You probably don't eat your dinner watching those shows.)

It is catogorized in Humour, and I did find this book in the Humour section of a Barnes and Noble, but it's not likely that many people would have come across this engaging little book, including me, if it had been catagorized differently.

I bought 5 more of these books, and everyone that received the book thought it was just as fun too.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-10-13

The author starts from the clever premise of asking people to describe interesting situations--being struck by lightning, being in a tornado, being shot in the head--and they tell him how it feels and he tells us! It's a quick read but don't let the ease of reading fool you--the book actually teaches us more of what it means to be human, and finally we learn of the bond that links us all, no matter what our experiences.

4 out of 5 stars Betcha can't read just one!.......2004-07-02

This is what I call bon-bon journalism. The pieces are all under a thousand words, some are under three hundred. They are pithy, quickly sketched and to the point, written in the first person as told to some of the writers at Esquire. I call it bon-bon journalism because the book is like a box of chocolates: you pop one into your mouth and then another and before you know it you've read the whole thing!

There are sixty-one of these little tales taken from the pages of the magazine. I wouldn't be able to pick a best one, but I liked Buzz Aldrin's reprise of what it feels like to walk on the moon: "powdery dust...the sky velvety black...surreal..." Naturally he was super focused on the task and aware that "if we made a mistake, we would regret it for quite a while."

I also liked "Going over Niagara Falls in a Barrel." It was a lot more high tech than you'd think. It took them almost a year and a half to construct the barrel. "Geoffrey Petkovich, 39, self-employed" who did it with a pal got roughed up a bit. His mouthpiece "got driven, hard" into his gums. He had two cans of beer and a pack of smokes in the barrel and two hours worth of oxygen in tanks in case the barrel sank.

Good too was "What It Feels Like to Have an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder." This guy, "Craig Strobeck, 24, actor" has to take two and a half hour showers. He runs out of hot water but doesn't stop. He has to clean every inch of his body about a thousand times. Sometimes he has to get back in the shower because one area just doesn't feel clean enough.

I was surprised to learn that when giving birth all that pushing that you have to do not only pushes the baby out, but also empties the bowels, etc. leaving a clean up detail that I never heard about before. But the endorphin rush is tremendous, so says "Dee McManamy, 43, housewife."

You get the picture. I think this would be a perfect book to take on a cross country flight, just enough light reading to keep you distracted, but you might want to skip the "What It Feels Like to Be in a Plane Crash." Then again "Ellen Hassman, 55, retired advertising executive" walked away from the detached section of the plane's tail while more than thirty other people died...

As a writer, I admired the crisp way the pieces were edited: tell the story and stop.

1 out of 5 stars If this is your idea of humor, you're definitely sick.......2004-06-28

I saw this book in the humor section of a bookstore. The first "chapter" talks about what it feels like to be struck by lightning. My sister was killed by lightning, so obviously I don't see any humor in that. Other "chapters" talk about being shot in the head, being gored by a bull and having leprosy. Do people find these things to be funny? There might be a place for this book in a bookstore (and on Amazon), but the humor section is not the place.

Book Description

As humanity presses down inexorably on the natural world, people debate the extent to which we can save the Earth's millions of different species without sacrificing human economic welfare. But is this argument wise? Must the human and natural worlds be adversaries? In this book, ecologist Michael Rosenzweig finds that ecological science actually rejects such polarization. Instead it suggests that, to be successful, conservation must discover how we can blend a rich natural world into the world of economic activity. This revolutionary, common ground between development and conservation is called reconciliation ecology: creating and maintaining species-friendly habitats in the very places where people live, work, or play. The book offers many inspiring examples of the good results already achieved. The Nature Conservancy, for instance, has a cooperative agreement with the Department of Defense, with more than 200 conservation projects taking place on more than 170 bases in 41 states. In places such as Elgin Air Force Base, the human uses-testing munitions, profitable timbering and recreation--continue, but populations of several threatened species on the base, such as the long-leaf pine and the red-cockaded woodpecker, have been greatly improved. The Safe Harbor strategy of the Fish and Wildlife Service encourages private landowners to improve their property for endangered species, thus overcoming the unintended negative aspects of the Endangered Species Act. And Golden Gate Park, which began as a system of sand dunes, has become, through human effort, a world of ponds and shrubs, waterfowl and trees. Rosenzweig shows that reconciliation ecology is the missing tool of conservation, the practical, scientifically based approach that, when added to the rest, will solve the problem of preserving Earth's species.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration amidst depression........2003-08-20

This book inspires you to look at your surroundings and make changes that improve the welfare of the living world around you. However, it states the cold equations of our increasing destruction, and explains what the future is likely to bring if we don't immediately start working for a better world.

Plants and animals used to be able to move to new habitats during periods of climate change -- today we've locked them into too-small reserves and they have nowhere to go except extinct during the current warming trend. That's why we must work hard at making our cities (where most of us live) as hospitable as possible for other living creatures.

This book is a gem. It is full of sarcasm and real-life-annoyance. You can tell that the author was writing this book as a healing process for all of the years he was "stuck" fighting the corporate monster. The illustrations were wonderful and really brought the book into a visual light. I think that anyone who has ever had a job, whether it's office, factory, restaurant, etc., will be able to relate to this book. As much as we'd like to deny it, this book is the real thing. It might be a little embellished for entertainment value, but the observations are true and they are pure Corporate Lunacy.

5 out of 5 stars Slender Volume But Speaks Volumes.......2000-12-03

Roger Kenny is managing partner of Boardroom Consultants and Ram Charan is a consultant and professor at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Business.

The heart of this slender volume is a mention of a study done by the venture capital firm, Onset Ventures. Nearly 80% of startups fail to survive the first 18 months of life. Onset surveyed 360 startups and found that one group had a 70% chance of making it. This group of companies had CEOs who used mentors with experience running both startups and large businesses.

Such mentors can often be developed and effectively employed in a Board of Directors/Board of Advisors capacity.

Effective Boards in startups involve partnership between Board members and managers, not oversight. The term "E-Board" is used to differentiate this kind of structure from the traditional governance-oriented Boards of established companies.

We think this is a book well worth having if you are a CEO or someone interested in serving on a Board. Facilitating and advancing such E-Boards is really what boardoptions.com is all about.

Book is particularly applicable to B2B e-commerce companies who are trying to adjust their revenue models on the fly. Amazingly objective narrative, real-life examples from A-list personnel rather than hypothetical case studies differentiates the book from the theoretical drivel that is pervasive today.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Business Book.......2004-03-26

This is an excellent business book. It gives you tools to be successful in life. It has a personality test to see where you are at. It goes into goal setting. Gives you examples and stories that show you what others have done, some make you cry and others are simply are incredible. The author's experience in Xerox and what he learned working for one of the finest training companies in the world is extremely valuable. The chapter on questions I have used in my company and with my family and friends. The chapter where he reveals a secret that a participant in a seminar paid $1,500 to learn is worth the price of the book and more. His stories about sports and his involvement with the Los Angeles Lakers and other teams are awesome. That one principle, "successful people are willing to do things that unsuccessful people are not willing to do is great.
Last but not least. The chapters on sales, marketing, negotiations and customer service should be read by every employee in America. This is a hell of a book. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great motivational book for corporate professionals.......2004-02-27

I am not one to buy mainstream motivational books because I've never related with the scenarios they portray, but this book actually captures the essence of what motivates the average person in Corporate America and beyond. I particularly liked the author's personal anecdotes. They make you feel like you are in conversation with him, rather than reading his book. The stories he tells are so simple and insightful, they really do engage you. This is a real quick and easy read I keep it at my desk for both good days and bad.

Rhetoric and Representation in Nonfiction Film examines the basic theoretical issues that ground any in-depth study of nonfiction film and video. Carl Plantinga surveys the functions of moving images in visual communication and shows how nonfiction discourse presents information through structural and stylistic analysis, among other topics. Plantinga also examines several fundamental philosophical issues that are at the heart of nonfiction representation and communication, including the nature and functions of objectivity, reflexivity, and truth telling.

                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-05-30

This book breezes through the basics and then isn't able to deliver on the advanced. There's very little information about the features and functions but I did find a section on how to dress!!! This is supposed to be about the program POWERPOINT, not about presentation basics.

I specifically wanted to understand more about programming templates and add-ins...nothing helpful at all, and sadly, not even enough for a beginner to get a good foundation in this very important concept in powerpoint and in all office components.

I was very disappointed and will be returning it as soon as I can wrap it up and ship it back.

3 out of 5 stars Content without Soul.......2006-05-17

This book has so much content that if you wanted to write an exam on PowerPoint, you could just remember the sentences in this book. What the book doesn't do is tell you why you would want to do things in the way Wempen explains. In a phrase, the book has no soul. It's just a compilation of what PowerPoint's menus can do in so much detail that it hurts.

                  3 out of 5 stars Letdown CD.......2006-04-03

The book is quite detailed but everybody can put in a few shareware programs and templates on a CD these days. This CD is a complete letdown. I wish they remove the CD and reduce the cost of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Read the Bible!.......2006-03-11

This easy read, easy reference format is awesome. I've been a PowerPoint power user for eight years. This is THE BEST book on PowerPoint I have ever used. I highly recommend it.

                  5 out of 5 stars A good book.......2004-01-25

I like this book best of all the PowerPoint books I have. One reason, it has a lot of tips for doing advanced things like custom animation, videos, etc. It also has these workshop lab exercises at the ends of the sections that give you a chance to practice things like a workbook. The CD is also good, it has lots of backgrounds templates and add-ins.
