Book Description
Modern industrial society is an experiment with a brief past and an uncertain future. In less than two centuries, technology has transformed the globe and given the human race the power to realize its highest ideals or destroy itself. Questioning Technology offers the recognition of the democratic significance of public intervention into technical life
We see that the rise and advance of information technology accounts for technologies ultimately crucial social and political position. If we continue to see technical and social domains as being separate, then we are essentially avoiding and denying an integral part of our existence, and our place in a democratic society. Questioning Technology convinces us that it is vital that we learn more about technology the better to live with it and manage it.

The Liberation of Technology.......2001-05-11
Andrew Feenberg's analysis of technology is profound and liberating. In his theory Feenberg incorporates ideas and insights from Heidegger, Marcuse, Foucault and Habermas among others, but goes beyond them in elaborating an original view. Dr. Feenberg sees technology as value-laden but humanly controlled and develops a historical concept of the essence of technology that incorporates philosophical, social and scientific perspectives. Convincing arguments are made for not viewing technology as a multiplicity of devices separated from the social sphere. "The technical always already incorporates the social in its structure."(Feenberg, 210) This means that devices could be designed to incorporate technical and environmental aspects that would enable liberation and life promoting values, instead of domination. In other words, technology is not autonomous and deteministic, it is possible, through design, to change its social, normative character. The book is clearly written and well organized, easy to read in the beginning, more demanding toward the end. But the chapters are organized to enable the reader to successfully get through the book, which includes many examples and detailed explanations. This book is a synthesis of philosophy, history and social thought. At the end of the book you are no longer the person you were before, and your view of technology will be forever changed. You begin to see possibilities where you thought none existed, and connections between things that you never dreamed of! I just finished reading it, and plan to read it again, soon!
An Original and Important Contribution to Technology Studies.......2000-10-18
Andrew Feenberg is the currently most prominent and productive philosopher in the area of technology and politics. He is an extraordinarily well-read and cosmopolitan thinker. He has made original contributions both to technology studies and political theory. And he has fashioned a viable and hopeful philosophy of the left. Feenberg is also a fine craftsman. He writes easily and lucidly. His book is well-constructed and carefully argued. Feenberg does not hesitate to lay bare the skeleton of his argument in clear and helpful charts. His book has an extensive bibliography and an instructive index. And he uses lay-out devices to keep the line of argument before his readers. _Questioning Technology_ is eminently teachable. However, it deserves wide reading and discussion beyond the classroom as well.

The title delivers: it really is beyond technology.......2001-05-30
I'm a parent of elementary school kids who has become fascinated with their adventures in education. I'm also fairly technically literate and would like to see more educators embracing technology as important tools in their students' quest for insights.
I went to see Dr. McKenzie speak at an educator's conference (they let parents in!) and was impressed with the clarity of his vision that kids will only learn how to frame good questions when their teachers have embraced the notion themselves. It's at that point the technology becomes a powerful tool to help kids create good projects. So I went home and bought this book.
The book is written for education leaders and teachers, to inspire teachers' professional development in the direction of questioning, research, and information literacy. The book has three sections: - The Primacy of Questioning - The Research Cycle and - Research Modules
McKenzie lays out the reasons we should care about good questions, gives us some models for the research cycle and how it helps kids learn, and identifies ways to help create modules and use scaffolding to make their work more efficient. Technology is simply a tool to support the teacher and student in information literacy, but a powerful tool that some teachers are reluctant to integrate into their work. (McKenzie's written another great book that specifically discusses that topic: "How Teachers Learn Technology Best")

Beyond Technology.......2006-06-30
Great teaching combined with information literacy and questioning skills might transform schools, but there has been entirely too much focus on the promise of wires and cables, laptops and desktops. There has been far too much spending on equipment and too little on professional developent and program development....
It is time we replace the term IT (Information Technology) with IL (Information Lieracy). IT is mainly about flow - the movement of information through networks of various kinds. But adding information in a time of infoglut and data smog (Shenk, 1998) can actually interfere with learning and understanding. Information abundance can overwhelm and drown the learner in irrelevant and unreliable information.
IL is mainly about developing understanding and insight. Literacy is about interpretation of information to guide decisions, solve problems and steer through uncertain complex futures.
What we need most now is a commitment to IL by schools as they strive to improve reading, writing and thinking of their students.

Nicely done and needed.......2007-09-19
This is one of an excellent series encouraging critical thought.
Short enough to be used with third graders but insightful enough to yield info for adults, and also a pleasant read.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference Guide !.......2007-08-31
This book was referred to me by a friend that is a very talented developer. I now see why he keeps this text on his desk while developing. The author provides excellent code examples in multiple languages. This is one of the best books that I have purchased in years !
Programmer's Holly Bible.......2007-07-07
John Robbins on the foreword of this book wrote "..No matter how you use Practical Guidelines and Best Practices, it will save you a tremendous
amount of time by helping to reduce those insidious bugs and performance problems in your
code. I've been using it with all my projects, and it's certainly made me a much better developer.."
I'm a simple .Net developer, how can i say more, from when i bought this book it is ever on my desk like the Holly Bible.
I had the honor of met both Francesco Balena and Giuseppe Dimauro it was like a normal violinist could talk with two Paganini.
A very useful book.......2007-05-01
In the [...] environment there are many different ways to accomplish the same result. This book provides information from people who are indisputably knowledgeable in the area that helps enormously in choosing between the various options. One of the most useful parts of it is the explanation that is provided for why one option has been chosen above another, which is to say, why it's a "best practice." I would recommend this book to any .Net programmer who wants to acquire concrete data that will help him in making his programming decisions.
Average book.......2006-05-17
Although there are some good insights here and there, not too much to gain.
Good book.......2006-01-17
I am a reader of Balena's books and appreciate his writings. I have read this book and would only say that the objective of the book if not teaching theory to computer science students but to explain practical guidelines.
I am a computer engineering graduate myself and have studied both thoery as well as working on cutting edge technologies for past 7 years.
There are times where most of the theories are not in line with the practical development life cycle and I have seen best of the architects breaking Mr Codds rule on database most of the times.
This book is one such master piece that gives you information on real world development guidelines and best practices and have recommended this book to most of the fresh developers in my team.
